The Charity of the Month for June is: New Ground www.newground.org
New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Since opening their doors in 1991, New Ground has seen over 80% of the families they have served “graduate” from their programs self sufficient and in permanent stable housing. New Ground empowers children, parents and Veterans to achieve their goals so that they can secure a brighter future for generations to come!
New Ground helped Nina to secure part time employment that was flexible, willing to adjust her schedule when she or her son suddenly required hospitalization or recovery time at home. Nina did significant work with her Social Worker on budgeting, creating a savings and developing strategies to adjust her spending if her household income suddenly decreased for
After just under four years, Nina and her son successfully graduated into permanent housing. An apartment was found in the same neighborhood where their program apartment was located, ensuring Nina’s continued easy commute to work and her son’s continuation in the school district he had only recently entered. As you can see, New Ground is a huge help to the homeless community on Long Island and is there for those in need. They are currently in need of volunteers to help out in various areas of their organization. If you have a background in Education and wish to help tutor individuals out of their Levittown Main Office, the opportunity is available! You can also get involved with one of their Event Committees to help coordinate one of their upcoming special events, or with their Program Committee, which meets quarterly to review overall programs and services. There are plenty of success stories of people who benefited from their services. One in particular I’d like to spotlight is Nina’s. Nina was a single mother with one son. They both had a chronic illness that significantly impacted their health. She had struggled in the past to establish a life for her family because of the unpredictable nature of their health. All New Ground families and Veterans require a unique approach and plan of action, but this was considerably greater for Nina. She needed supports put in place to ensure her family’s future despite the ongoing need for unexpected lengthy breaks from employment.

As a means of promoting heart-healthy activity and collecting funds to benefit the American Heart Association, staff and students from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently took part in a two-day “Kids Heart Challenge” jump rope event. With assistance from physical education teacher Nicholas Sturtz, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a marvelous area designated for students to engage in jumping rope as they received support from their parents on the sidelines, along with motivation from an upbeat music soundtrack. The district is thrilled to announce $10,002 was raised during the course of the two-day event due to overwhelming community support.

Students Celebrate Local Heroes
Earlier this month in recognition of Police Appreciation Week, students across the Sachem Central School District participated in a plethora of events and activities that honored men and women in law enforcement and their unwavering commitment to protect the citizens of the Sachem community.
At Lynwood Avenue Elementary School, students welcomed members of law enforcement and first responders, including local volunteer firefighters, New York City firefighters and those working as emergency medical service members. Students thanked the brave individuals before asking

them a series of prepared questions about their career. Additionally, students at Grundy Avenue Elementary School recently honored members of law enforcement at dismissal as students handed out thank-you cards on their way to board their school buses.

Students Donate To Make-A-Wish
SANITISI HONORED - Thomas Santisi, who lives in Ronkomoma with his wife, Marie, and is a Leading Edge earner at Elliman’s Farmingville office, received an official Proclamation and Certificate of Recognition from the Chamber for his community and philanthropic outreach. The Chamber Board member is a Navy veteran and retired New York City Police officer with the Emergency Services Unit. For the past several years, he has been traveling, at his own expense, to visit officers and their families who have been adversely affected by September 11.

The students came to a conclusion that the efforts put forward by the MakeA-Wish Foundation were more than worthwhile, and so it was ultimately decided that the majority of the monetary funds collected that evening would be donated directly toward the nonprofit organization.

On June 4, hundreds of parents, students, teachers, alumni and friends came together at Connetquot High School to honor the legacy of Jon-Michael Lasher, who passed away earlier this year. Jon-Michael Lasher was a mainstay in the Connetquot community, first as a talented studentmusician, who would later return as a beloved music teacher, and then as director of fine arts and music. In a widespread effort to honor Mr. Lasher and establish scholarships for talented Connetquot students, volunteers from Connetquot, surrounding school districts and communities alike put on a show that would make Mr. Lasher proud. Art exhibits and demonstrations were lined throughout the high school, along with singers,
musicians, musical groups and ensemble groups that performed in the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center, entertaining and impressing all of those who came to honor Mr. Lasher. The community and administration truly joined hands in making this night special for those who loved Mr. Lasher. Raffles for a variety of donated baskets, along with donations from local businesses, and the sale of snacks helped to raise funding for future scholarships. While there were too many volunteers and supporters to list, a sincere thank you goes out to all, especially the following groups and individuals – The Connetquot School District Board of Education and Administration; Middle Country School District Board of Education and

Giving Back To A WWII Veteran On the 75th anniversary of D-Day, June 6, 2019, 20 PSEG Long Island employees returned to the home of a World War II veteran and his wife to do a spring cleaning. The employee-volunteers performed many tasks for 96-year-old Morris Koffer and his 89-year-old wife, Edith, such as repairing screen doors, and replacing a broken window pane. Some employees also joined Koffer in the basement to help him discard unwanted items that he and his family had collected more than five decades. The Koffers watched happily as the volunteers in their orange “PSEG Long Island Community Partners” shirts spiffed up their home. Morris Koffer shared that he was filled with nothing but joy and gratitude. “I’m very happy for the help. I’m very surprised; very thankful,” he said. “I never expect anything from anyone because
I lived my life helping others.” Morris Koffer was 21 years old and still training to become an Army Air Corps radio communication specialist when Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. After his wartime service, Morris Koffer worked in a school teaching radio broadcasting, and later installed TV antennas on the roofs of homes until he was 86. He retired from that profession after he was injured in a fall. The PSEG Long Island volunteers took time to sit with Morris Koffer and look at photos of him from the 1940s and 50s while he shared stories of his time in the Army Air Corps. This is not the first time that a PSEG Long Island cleanup team has volunteered at the Koffer home. Last year, a dozen volunteers cleared yard waste, twigs, old leaves and other debris from the property and inside the home.
At the time, volunteers noticed the Koffers’ American flag was tattered. They removed it and hung a brand new flag while Morris Koffer looked on with pride. Since that day, when he returns home from medical appointments and sees the flag, Morris Koffer says he thinks of the generosity of the PSEG Long Island volunteers and how they helped him and his wife. “I am so proud of the way our employees show they care about our customers,” said Suzanne Brienza, PSEG Long Island director of customer experience and utility marketing. “Participating in a community service activity like this, especially helping someone who has touched so many lives, is rewarding for both our employees and our customers.” For more information on how PSEG Long Island supports the communities it serves, visit https://www. psegliny.com/page.cfm/ Community.

Students Report From The Field Without having to take a flight to another continent, elementarylevel students from both the Idle Hour and Helen B. Duffield elementary schools recently enhanced their newsroom skills by “reporting” from foreign lands. With assistance from technology integration specialist Victoria Pappas, a number of third grade students at Idle Hour
Elementary School stepped in front of a green screen and mimicked multiple professions from the journalism field, including newscasting, field reporting and operating the teleprompter. Prior to their excellent reporting, the students were asked to choose a specific aspect of nature to research, such as snakes, whales or wolves, which ultimately
went hand in hand with the “Animal Planet” theme which was chosen for them. At the conclusion of the students’ content being filmed, the fifth grade students at Duffield Elementary School will be editing the footage themselves and piecing together the video to make a concise and fun, video package. Alumni Inducted Into Athletic Wall Of Fame On May 11, friends, family, coaches and administrators gathered at Connetquot High School to induct 13 former studentathletes and coaches to the high school’s Athletic Wall of Fame. A committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators culled the nominations and selected the newest members of the prestigious Connetquot Athletic Wall of Fame. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates Christine Bentz Dellavechia (’83/ tennis, basketball, volleyball); Kristopher Cuozzo (’85/football, lacrosse); Rob DiLello (’86/ football, baseball); Nicolle
Dionne (’94/gymnastics); Bob Drzal (basketball coach 1991-2014); Phil Karlstad (’76/community/ sports photographer); Sean McCabe (’12/wrestling); Chuck McAuley (athletic director/coach); Nick Monastero (’05/lacrosse, football); Mike Pellegrino (’11/football, lacrosse); Marianne Santoro Loose (’85/track, basketball, volleyball); Philip Stolfa (’95/soccer, lacrosse) and Michele Waring Rocco (’95/track, soccer). A delicious brunch was served prior to the inductions, which were handled by Director of Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Recreation Mark Dellecave, along with

Each inductee was introduced with a “snapshot” of their accomplishments when they wore the school’s red and white colors, and as another token of appreciation, the inductees were presented with a replica of the plaque which has now been added to the Connetquot Athletic Wall of Fame, located outside of the “new” gymnasium. Board of Education trustee Mark Warshaw was on hand to congratulate the inductees on behalf of the board and Superintendent INDUCTED INTO ATHLETIC WALL OF FAME - 13 former Connetquot High Dr. Lynda G. Adams. School student-athletes and coaches were inducted to the high school’s Athletic Wall of Fame. A committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators culled the nominations and selected the newest members of this prestigious award.

STUDENTS RECITE POETRY - Students enrolled in Heidi Edmonds’ and Jennifer Pluth’s seventh grade English classes at Ronkonkoma Middle School recently showcased their creative literary talents during a Poetry Slam event. To celebrate the activity, Ms. Pluth’s classroom was transformed into an appropriate café setting for the day, as the students recited their work before an audience of fellow classmates. The Connetquot Central School District is thrilled to announce that students Dylan Macejko and Michele Muscolo have been selected as the valedictorian and salutatorian for the 201819 school year, respectively, based on their academic successes and unwavering commitment to higher learning. Dylan has committed to attending Binghamton University in the fall, where he will study computer science. During his time spent at Connetquot High School, he served as captain for the varsity swim team, and was a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society, to name a few. Dylan is
also a highly accomplished lifeguard, often lending his time to teach younger students on the weekends as a swim instructor. In addition, he was named an AP Scholar with Distinction, signifying that he achieved an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams taken with scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. Although undecided as to where to attend this fall, Michele is certain that she will pursue biology as her declared major. While attending Connetquot High School, she too was a member of the National Honor Society, along with the Tri-M Honor Society and Marching Band. In addition to being named
an AP Scholar with Honor, Michelle also took part in a number of extracurricular activities such as Habitat for Humanity, the Animal Conservation Club and various Church fundraisers.
