Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So Summer is officially here… now what? Well, for me, in addition to all the normal seasonal stuff most of us look forward to, I am eagerly anticipating catching up on some quality TV time. Rerun Season, as I like to refer to it, is prime time to make use of that “On Demand” feature and settle in for some marathon viewing sessions, don’t you think? Remember all those cable TV series your friends keep talking about that you’ve never had the chance to check out? Well, plop down on the couch, put your feet up and start with Episode I, Season I. Watch a few episodes a night, every night, and you’ll be all caught up before you know it.

Oh, and let’s not forget about that pile of magazines from those subscriptions you just can’t bear to cancel. How many of you have accumulated quite the collection? What’s that, a Winter Music Preview on the cover? Only slightly outdated… take that cup of tea outside and start turning those pages. If you’re feeling especially ambitious, you can always attempt to crack open an actual book, too. I know, I know, such a thing is foreign to most people in this day and age. But remember how much you used to love it? How easy it was to become engrossed in chapter after chapter of a good novel to the point that you never wanted to put it down? Well, summer is the perfect opportunity to rediscover that passion.

Of course, beautiful beach weather always beckons, but the good part is that books and magazines travel easily enough. And with the technology of today, so can TV shows, actually. Take your tablet along for the ride, stick your toes in the sand, and insert a beach chair in place of that couch. You’re all set! Just think, an entire month to reintegrate yourself into the culture that you’ve been missing out on these last few months (or years, as the case may be). Time to do something for yourself, wouldn’t you say? Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time to anguish over all the normal daily obligations. But that “you” time… that’s something you can never get back. Priceless.

Friday, June 7th kicks off the 64th year of The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program. Movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours will head to local theatres to help benefit adult and pediatric cancer research and care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Since 1949, volunteers have been passing collection canisters after the showing of a movie “trailer” about the Jimmy Fund at participating movie theaters. The program runs Tuesdays and Thursdays (evenings only), and Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (days and evenings) from June 7th to July 25th at participating National Amusements movie theaters in several states including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. This year there are two new theatres participating in Massachusetts, the Somerville Theatre in Somerville and the Capitol Theatre in Arlington. What happens when a group of motivated scientists are inspired to give the most amazing and diverse learning experience to kids of middle and high school ages? Sigma Camp! It is a

National Laboratory, and other similarly accredited institutions from around the world. “I succeeded in my academic career thanks largely to the great education and exposure to the wonders of science that I received early in my childhood,” says Alexander Abanov, a Sigma Camp instructor and a professor at Stony Brook University and Simons Center for Physics and Geometry. “I am convinced that educating kids fully and thoroughly in a real scientific research environment is essential to their overall development and future growth.” Sigma Camp provides an opportunity for children ages 11-15 for the kind of direct interaction with leading scientists that most students are never given. Only the lucky few chance to experience this, and much later in their college years. Sigma Camp offers indepth studies in the main area of interest as well as multiple opportunities to attend workshops and lectures on other subjects. In

the evening, there are varied possibilities for socializing at campfires, board games, and discussions on such topics as art, history, origami, film, and others. Of course, there is also plenty of time left to take advantage of summertime on our picturesque campus offering swimming and outdoor sports. Most Sigma Camp instructors have been working together at an excellent weekend enrichment program of School Nova at Stony Brook University. This program they created and successfully ran for the past nine years. This is Sigma Camp’s second year in existence. The enrolment is at full capacity of 72 children with a waiting list. From the fist year’s alumni of 45 only two are not returning this year. Each student had to complete a set of challenging qualifying tests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology, which did nothing to discourage the aspiring young minds. Applications keep coming. Sigma Camp runs for one week in June this year, and will likely be moving to the last week of August for next year. Children fly from other states and other countries for the opportunity to participate in the camp. Sigma Camp wishes to share the story of its wonderful atmosphere and inspiring learning experience with the public. Members of the press are invited to visit the camp and see it in action during the week of June 22nd through 29th in Shelter Island, New York. Press Day is Tuesday, June 25th. (ACLD) held its largest fundraising event of the year, The Enviable Life Ball at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury on Thursday, May 30th. Hollywood actor, producer and Commack native, Joe Sabatino, of the CBS series Vegas was Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Over the past two decades, Joe has enjoyed a robust acting career in film and television. Joe Sabatino inspired the crowd with his touching words, “With all of the changes on the horizon for ACLD, we all must work together and support this mission. Escallier was honored for her nationally grantfunded evidence-based scholarship on nursing education, delivery models and organizational outcomes, according to the NSHC. She received the prestigious award at the NHSC’s annual Nurse of Excellence Award Ceremony on May 23 at the Woodbury Country Club in Woodbury, NY. Each of the NHSC’s member hospitals nominated a nurse for the annual awards, and the Deans of area nursing schools submitted nominees for nursing excellence in education. Escallier has been a Principal Investigator on federally funded nursing research on retention strategies in diverse workforces. She has presented her evidencebased scholarly research at local, national and international conferences and been published in dozens of peer-reviewed journals. She has presented nationally and internationally on the process of creating and maintaining diverse workforces, and on evaluation and outcome methodologies. In October 2012, Escallier provided a podium presentation in collaboration with DNP doctoral student Emily Cupelli on “Sensory Processing Differences and Urinary Incontinence in School Aged Children” at the International Children’s Continence Society/Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence/ British Association of Pediatric Urology Joint Congress, for the Royal College of Physicians in London, England. “Lori’s approach to scholarship is that differences do not provide impasses, but rather, opportunities for scholarly exchange and growth,” said Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing. “She has continued scholarly integration across disciplines throughout her career, working with faculty from various schools, hospitals as well as other national

universities.” Escallier has received numerous accolades for her work, including the 2012 Five Year Distinguished Service Award from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. She is also the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Achievement in Education and Student Relations for the Robert Wood Johnson RWJ Scholars. She serves as a Team Leader for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, leading accreditation teams to the nation’s top-rated schools of nursing, both public and private. “Lori is a leader within the School of Nursing, the University and our profession,” Xippolitos said. “Her collegiality and mentorship is valued by faculty and staff and her influence is far reaching. Her perspective and presence as a nursing scholar has enriched the school’s development.” “The most satisfying aspect of my work is watching my student’s dreams become realities,” Escallier said. “I consider myself fortunate to be able to provide opportunities that assist underrepresented and disadvantaged students overcome the obstacles that face them. Diverse students need a mentor who will boost their selfconfidence and help them navigate the many challenges of the degree program. I am truly humbled to be an integral part of the process that forms the professional nurse of the future.” “Nurses will see their leadership roles expand because of reforms inherent in the Affordable Care Act,” said Paul Connor, chair of the NSHC board of directors and CEO of Eastern Long Island Hospital. “In addition, they will be called to fill the gap of primary care services, as insurance coverage expands under reform and as baby boomers age…. There is a level of comfort going into the future knowing a nurse will always be there.”

At the June 4th meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Rob Calarco honored the first, second and third place winners in the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s annual Bridge Building Contest – all of whom hail from Patchogue-Medford High School. This is the second consecutive year Pat-Med

students have swept the top three spots. Brianna Shortell took first place with a bridge that weighed 20.7 grams and held 89.18 pounds, 1954.17 times its own weight. Michael Grazio placed second with a bridge that weighed 21.01 grams and held 89.83 pounds, 1939.37 times its weight, and third place went to Justin Schulz,

whose bridge weighed 14.59 grams and held 60.78 pounds, 1889.61 times its weight. Also on hand was Mr. Richard Yngstrom, the physics teacher at the high school who supervises the students in preparation for the bridge building contest.

Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker recognized Luke Katona from West Middle Island Elementary for his first place win at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair for elementary school students. “Luke has demonstrated a tremendous understanding of the scientific method,” said Legislator Anker. “I commend him for his dedication, and I would like to congratulate Luke on his hard work.” Inspired by ants crawling over his juice box last

summer, Luke decided to find out what drew the ants to sugary foods. After building an ant farm, Luke observed the patterns of ants working together, digging tunnels, and carrying food. Luke then chose seven different varieties of food to learn whether ants prefer certain types to others. By observing the number of ants on each type of food during interval periods, Luke determined that ants tend to prefer sweets like fruit and ice cream rather than salty snacks such as pretzels or cheese.

More than 100 Suffolk County schools take part every year in BNL’s Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, compete. The student projects include charts, experiments, demos, diagrams, and collections with a scientific objective. Brookhaven National Laboratory scientists and elementary school teachers judge the contest.

Rally For The Future Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., along with district teachers and parents, joined thousands of NY state teachers and supporters for an important rally at the state capital in Albany, NY, on June 8th. This One Voice United – Fighting for the future of Public Education rally brought together educators and like-minded supporters to rally against over-testing, and the underfunding, in public education. CTA members took the 3½ hour bus trip to Albany to make their voices heard. Felicio said, “What a great day this was to see so many people concerned about the future of public education gather together at the state capital. It was inspiring to be with so many New York state residents rallying for less testing, and more

funding.” Felicio also went on to thank Connetquot teachers who took the time to make the journey to Albany, and to be part of this special event. For those concerned citizens participating in this education rally, the message was ‘Enough is Enough’, to the state’s obsession with standardized testing that jeopardizes student learning time, and a full, rich curriculum. Additional concerns shared by those attending this important rally were: fair and adequate education funding; appropriate class sizes; student access to public higher education and reconsideration of the undemocratic tax cap that diminishes local control. SCOUTS HONOR - On Saturday June 8th, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was proud to attend the Eagle Award ceremony for Robert Agtuca. She presented a Certificate of Congratulations while his family and friends were in attendance. His project was to construct a split rail fence at the Town’s Holtsville Ecology Site, which was a welcome addition to the popular facility. The previous fence was in dire need of repair and the animals and visitors at the zoo needed a well-built separation.

Keynote Speaker Recently, County Executive Bellone served as the keynote presenter at the June Long Island Metro Business Action (LIMBA) meeting held at the Holiday Inn located in Ronkonkoma. Bellone took the opportunity to speak to the group about the state of the County and discussed pertinent initiatives and programs of the County. Bellone’s talk focused on economic development and revitalization initiatives as

well as measures enacted to address the fiscal issues of the county. Following the presentation, members engaged in a Q&A with the County Executive. Stand Up For The Homeless The Long Island Campus of St. Joseph’s College is pleased to announce that it will provide a venue for the 6th Annual Stand Up for the Homeless event, sponsored by the Office of the Suffolk County Executive, on Friday, June 21st in the John A. Danzi Athletic Center from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the fifth year the event will be held at the College.

The annual Stand Up for the Homeless event allows individuals in attendance to gain access to free services and products offered by a number of non-profit and government agencies, all in one location. Services that will be provided include health and dental screenings, housing and shelter placement, employment opportunities, free haircuts, a clothing

drive and public assistance counseling. The blood pressure and health screenings that were provided at previous events resulted in a handful of attendees receiving vital, immediate care they may have otherwise not received. “The mission and fundamental goal of the Suffolk County Department of Social

Services is to assist each of our county’s most vulnerable residents with the tools and support they need to regain their selfsufficiency,” said Suffolk County Department of Social Services Acting Commissioner John F. O’Neill. “Stand Up for the Homeless personifies that mission, and we are proud to stand beside County Executive Bellone,

St. Joseph’s College and our non-profit partners in presenting it.” Long Island Cares and Island Harvest will provide attendees with bags of food to leave with. An additional food drive will be coordinated by The Patchogue Lions Club, while St. Vincent de Paul will coordinate a clothing drive. Free transportation to and from the event will

be supplied throughout the day at 10 different locations around the county. Last year, more than 250 volunteers came out to assist at the event and more than 75 organizations offered free services to over 500 individuals and families. For more information or to volunteer, call 631.854.9748.

Given enough motivation, enough drive and the desire to succeed, even a college dropout can become the billionaire behind one of the world’s biggest companies. So before you pout about not getting that 100 Grade Point Average, or that perfect SAT score, remember, one day you could become Bill Gates.
