In 2014, the park, formerly known as Old Nichols Road Park, was acquired by the village from the Town of Islip with the help of thenTown Supervisor Tom Croci, for the purpose of developing a ball field on an underutilized, dilapidated property. The acquisition was made possible through the assistance of then-New York State Senator Lee Zeldin and New York State Assemblyman Al Graf, who introduced legislation the previous year to authorize the transfer of ownership of the seven-acre park to the village at no cost. On June 17, 2013, the state Senate passed the bill; four days later, it was approved by the Assembly. On June 7th, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, joined Islandia Village Trustees, local elected officials and representatives of Delaware North, Bolla Market and Breslin Realty in the groundbreaking of the First Responders Recreational Ball Field. The First Responders Recreational Ball Field will feature a state-of-theart ball field for youth and community baseball and softball games. The redeveloped park will also include a concession stand, restrooms, a playground and an exercise path around the perimeter of the park with 10 different exercise stations. Delaware North, operator of the new Jake’s 58 in Islandia, provided $1.53 million for the completion of the construction and the development of the ball field as part of its Taxpayer Relief Agreement with the village. Bolla Market contributed $500,000 for construction of the restrooms, a storage area

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. This is our goal at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers each and every week, and we hope that you – as readers – can always find something you enjoy within these pages.

The Connetquot Central School District congratulates senior Taylor Cole for committing to continue both her educational and athletic careers at Iona College in New Rochelle as a member of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Gaels. “Taylor was an AllSuffolk County selection as a senior, and our team’s MVP,” said Justin Hertz, Connetquot High School volleyball coach. “She is one of the most committed student-athletes to ever

wear a T-Bird uniform, as her work ethic is unmatched and her passion and pride make her special on and off the court.” As a senior, Taylor had 140 volleyball kills along with 60 service aces. Taylor was the winner of the Dawg Award, and was selected to the All-Suffolk County Academic and volleyball teams. She has helped lead the T-Birds to three Suffolk County, two Long Island, and one New York State Championship during her outstanding four-year high

school career. Taylor has earned a 97 percent unweighted academic average, and ranks 17th in the 2017 Connetquot High School graduating class. Additionally, she is a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the National French and Spanish Language honor societies. She was heavily recruited by several universities, but decided to accept the challenge of the Honors’ Program at Iona College.

The Longwood Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Susan Connolly as principal of Coram Elementary School, effective July 1st, 2017. Mrs. Connolly replaces Vaughn Denton who was named Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services. “We welcome Susan Connolly as principal of Coram,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “Her extensive educational and administrative experience continues to be an asset to our school community. We wish her much success in her new role.” Mrs. Connolly began her career at Longwood School District in 2000 as the assistant principal at Coram Elementary School. High Honors Announced The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) recently announced that Demi Lambadis from Centereach High School and Ryan Bloom from Newfield High School are the Class of 2017’s official Valedictorians, and Kelly McLaughlin from Centereach High School and Leo Chen from Newfield High School are the Salutatorians. This year’s honorees have excelled beyond the classroom, taking on leadership roles, volunteering throughout the community and contributing to the high schools’ many extracurricular activities. “The Valedictorians and Salutatorians emulate what the District strives to instill in students through a well-rounded educational experience. These students are equally as committed to their studies as to giving back to their community and school district,” said MCCSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “We are incredibly proud of all four students who have grown and overcome all challenges that came their way during their 13 years in this District. On behalf of the entire Middle Country community, we congratulate them on their accomplishments and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors.” Centereach High School Class of 2017 Valedictorian Demi Lambadis will

graduate in June having completed 10 Advanced Placement (AP) classes and three additional collegelevel courses. Demi will be graduating with college credits due to her success on the AP Exams, earning her recognition from the College Board as an AP Scholar with Honors. In addition to her success in the classroom, Demi has served as both President and Vice President for her class and is the Vice President of her school’s Leaders’ Club. Demi will be attending Lehigh University in the fall and will be pursuing a degree in biomechanical engineering. Newfield High School Valedictorian Ryan Bloom holds a weighted GPA of 101.49 and has the potential to graduate with 42 college credits. Despite his demanding academic schedule, Ryan has been an extremely active member of Newfield. Among his many extracurricular activities, Ryan is the president of the senior class, secretary of the Thespian Honor Society, co-president and editor of the Newspaper Club and a PTSA Council Delegate. Ryan will be attending Northeastern University in the fall and will be studying political science. At the moment, Ryan is unsure if he will pursue a career in law or government work. Kelly McLaughlin, this year’s Salutatorian of Centereach High School,

will have completed 11 AP courses and four college-level classes upon graduating in June. She is recognized not only as exceptionally intelligent but a student who understands the need to give back to her community. Kelly has served as the President of her school’s National Spanish Honor Society, an active member of the National Junior Honor Society and a dedicated volunteer as a tutor to students at the Middle Country Public Library. Kelly will be building off her passion for educating others as she’s set to attend the State University of New York at Geneseo to study mathematics and education. Newfield High School’s Salutatorian, Leo Chen, has a weighted average of 100.2 and has the potential to graduate with 45 college credits. His performance on his numerous AP Exams have earned him recognition as an AP Scholar with Distinction. Leo is a member of the Book Club, Tri-M Honor Society, National Honor Society, Select Jazz Band and the Chamber Orchestra. In addition to his musical talent, he was selected as the captain of the varsity track team and the varsity cross country team. Leo will be attending Yale University where he is set to major in computer science.

Space Day

Assemblyman Al Graf Congratulated St. Joseph School in Ronkonkoma on its recent celebration of “Space Day”, where students made radio contact with Jack Fisher, an astronaut on the International Space station. Twelve Students from St. Joseph’s 8th grade class were among only 14 schools in the entire country, to have the opportunity to reach out to astronauts at the International Space station, and ask some questions to learn about life in space. “I am delighted to see students right here in Ronkonkoma have the opportunity to talk with an astronaut in space,” said Graf. “This is a once in a lifetime experience and a huge deal, not only for the school, but also for our entire community. It’s not too often opportunities like this arise. I am so happy to see these children receive this chance to talk to an

astronaut in space. They truly deserve it.” Teachers and students prepared for this event months in advance, working space exploration and radio communication, into their curriculum in a yearlong effort to prepare for contact. Jennifer Medordi, St. Joseph’s technical director and technology teacher, learned of this opportunity and applied through the Amateur Radio International Space Station (ARISS) Contact program, made possible by the Amateur Radio community in cooperation with NASA. She was thrilled to find out her class was selected. The 12 students given the opportunity to ask Astronaut Jack Fischer questions were selected through an essay competition held at the school. Medallion Unveiled On May 27th, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, joined local war veterans and elected officials in unveiling the replacement United States Marine Corps medallion that was installed in the Islandia Veterans Memorial just before the start of the village’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. The original medallion

was unlawfully removed from the memorial on the night of January 15, 2017, causing significant damage to the memorial. The village is currently offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and prosecution of those involved in this criminal act. Mayor Dorman thanked Empire National Bank for its generous donation

in assisting the village in purchasing the replacement medallion. The unveiling was followed by the village’s annual Memorial Day ceremony, which featured an invocation, a recognition of the local war veterans in attendance and those who gave the greatest sacrifice and the laying of the wreaths at the memorial.

Welcoming Wounded Warriors Wounded Warrior Project representatives Ben Mitchell and Matt Pennington recently visited with the fifth-grade students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School to talk about their unique sporting experience, and explain what keeps them motivated.

Both speakers spoke about their involvement with the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team, an organization whose intent is to inspire and educate others while promoting the health and welfare of other wounded veterans. The team travels the country competing against other teams of athletes in exhibition games.

Afterward, the students asked questions. Additionally, to show support for the veteranathletes’ visit, secondgrade teacher Brooke Madison and her class prepared a colorful American flag using handprints to show their respect for all of veterans.

The Longwood School District has appointed Vaughn Denton to the position of Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel and Community Services, effective July 1st, 2017. Mr. Denton replaces Debra Winter who was appointed Superintendent of Schools at Springs School District. Mr. Denton has spent more than 12 years at Longwood where he served as assistant principal for both Longwood Middle School and Coram Elementary School. In 2012, he was appointed as principal of Coram Elementary School. “Mr. Denton’s diverse experience, enthusiasm and commitment to motivating those around him make him a tremendous asset to our central administrative team,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “He knows the community, understands the culture, and is deeply knowledgeable about our vision, mission, and goals. We wish him much success in his new position.”
