is struggling with a mental health issue, don’t hesitate to contact this non-profit. They truly believe mental health is as important as physical health. MHAW is very excited about its 6th annual Kick Stands Up event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd at the Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Lasting from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., this motorcycle, poker run and car show will benefit at-risk and homeless veterans of the Suffolk County United Veterans Project. All who attend will receive breakfast and the chance to win prizes throughout the day. The entry fee for motorcycles and cars is $20; for walk-ins, it is $5 and for children under 12, it is free. The Greatest Honor “I love deadlines. I love the whooshing noise they make as they go by.” ~ Douglas Adams As I sat in the audience at the recent Press Club of Long Island awards ceremony last week, intently listening to the words of one of our Hall of Fame honorees, the legendary writer and reporter Harvey Aronson, I was struck by the notion that one could choose a particular career to pursue and, so many years later {at the tender age of 89}, remain just as devoutly passionate about it. As he eloquently put it, “I wanted to be a writer… and so I became one.” The simplest sentiments are often the most poignant. In addition to his illustrious career as a groundbreaking journalist, Harvey has also devoted quite a number of

decades to the pursuit of teaching his craft to the next generation. Though I wasn’t fortunate to be enrolled in one of his classes myself, I certainly had my fair share of stellar professors through the years, some whom I reflected upon as I soaked in every word spoken by this fascinating man as he stood before the assembled crowd of media elite.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups, and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. In anticipation of Alaska and Hawaii becoming states, Heft personally designed and sewed a 50 star flag as part of a H.S. history project. His teacher gave him a B- on his project. Heft went on to send his flag to his Ohio Congressman, Walter Moeller, for consideration of becoming the new United States National Flag. It is said that President Dwight D. Eisenhower personally called Heft to inform him that he had chosen his flag design over 1,500 other applicants to be the new U.S. Flag! in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Law Enforcement students travelled from the Oakdale location to the Bellport campus where the Personal Training Program is housed and the obstacle course was created. The course consisted of jumping rope, performing push-ups, scaling a wall, dragging weights with a tow rope to simulate pulling a victim to safety, performing CPR on a dummy, fighting off a perpetrator, making a quick arrest, and other physical challenges. All the while, student personal trainers shouted encouragement to keep participants moving at top speed. Law Enforcement students worked with their peers in the Personal Training Program for most of the year to improve their fitness levels and prepare for this event. The event also provided for cross-collaboration among many programs, supplying students with realistic industry-related experiences - Carpentry students built the wall for the obstacle course and Professional Photography students documented great moments, as did TV Production students. Valedictorians Honored

Bossert, SCSSA presidentelect and Elwood School District superintendent of schools, and Roger Tilles, New York State Education Department Board of Regents member. During her keynote address, New York State Commissioner of Education and University of the State of New York President MaryEllen Elia encouraged the valedictorians to ask questions about what it took to get here today and how they can, in turn, support and champion public education tomorrow. “We all benefit from public education, which needs to be supported,” Elia said. “You can give back to support the work that was given to you.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and gift of recognition.

During their individual acknowledgements, the universities they plan to attend and their intended majors were announced. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Boston College, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Purdue University, Stony Brook University, Tufts University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate sponsors also awarded 12 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. Teddy Bear Clinic

Injured teddy bears were lined up at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville yesterday, with kindergarteners taking on the roles of doctors and nurses to treat the injuries. Slings were made, cuts tended to, and teddy bear pulses checked. It was all part of a free “Teddy Bear Clinic” orchestrated by NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Center to teach young members of the community about injury prevention, treatment, and to educate them on the medical profession. The children were asked to bring in their favorite teddy bear or other stuffed animal, with NYU Winthrop providing equipment for the students to dress up as doctors and nurses. NYU Winthrop trauma nurses assisted students in treating the injured bears, and they were aided by Adelphi University nursing students. Similar Teddy Bear Clinics will be held at elementary schools in Freeport and North Merrick next week. “We teach children how to take safety into their own hands such as by wearing

bike helmets, seat belts, and stopping at stop signs,” said Ellen Berghorn, RN, who heads NYU Winthrop’s Pediatric Injury Prevention Program. “We also teach students that the medical world is really not so scary, and the children’s hands-on experience treating injured bears helps bring that to light.” Added Stephanie Stam, Principal of Lee Avenue School, “It’s so important to impart to young students knowledge that will help keep them safe outside the classroom and prevent injuries, but if emergency medical situations arise, we also want children to have awareness as to what happens next. It’s wonderful that we are able to bring to children hands-on experience in the medical world.” Presentations educated 75 children in total. Among the lessons taught: · Whose job is it to keep our bodies safe? (Ourselves!) · What’s the first thing we do when we get in the car? (Buckle up!) · Where’s the safest place

for kids to sit in the car? (In the back!) · How do we protect our brains? (Wear a helmet!) · What’s the number to call in an emergency? (911) NYU Winthrop nurses also explained their roles as nurses and helped the children learn about different medical instruments. Students also went home armed with flyers providing tips for parents to keep children safe, including the proper safety belt fit. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, a non-profit organization, road injuries are the leading cause of preventable deaths and injuries to children in the US, but child safety seats, correctly used, can reduce the risk of death by as much as 71 percent. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injuryrelated deaths for children ages 5 to 19, with teens particularly at risk. Safe Kids Worldwide emphasizes the need for children of all ages to put down phones and take off headphones when crossing the street. Added NYU Winthrop’s Berghorn, “The majority of trauma injuries are preventable if children and their parents take basic precautions, stay alert and follow public safety rules.” NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Program is dedicated to reducing the number of preventable injuries through research, training and public education. The Hospital works throughout the year with local communities to spread awareness about safetyrelated issues and advocate for policies to improve the safety of Long Islanders. A bond of $2,500 was set by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother. A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island’s first newspaper was unveiled in Sag Harbor on Wednesday, June 6th. The marker commemorates David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker was installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. “This was another proud moment for the Press Club of Long Island,” said Chris R. Vaccaro, President of the Press Club. “We continue to honor places of significance in journalism history on Long Island, and there is no better location than the first newspaper known to our area.” Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. STEM Celebration The Middle Country Central School District recently hosted its 4th Annual STEM Celebration welcoming the community to support students from each elementary school as they competed in various Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) challenges. The event opened with various STEM activities for all community members to try, including building a LEGO tower. Every grade from all eight elementary schools received grade specific LEGO engineering and NAO Robotics programming challenges in October and worked enthusiastically to perfect their models leading up to the event. The students’ hard work culminated

with presentations of their creations to a panel of expert judges from the fields of technology, engineering, architecture, business and education. Kindergarten students also participated in a DUPLO engineering challenge, the results of which were presented in video feed throughout the evening. High school and middle school science research students were also in attendance to present their projects. They were joined by members of the middle and high school robotics competition teams who were demonstrating their award winning robots. After the LEGO competition, students participated in the ondemand problem solving competition, during

which students had to think on their feet to use certain materials to solve a given problem. Teams had 10 minutes to process the challenge, engineer a solution and build a prototype before receiving their scores. Hawkins Path Elementary School was named the Middle Country Central School District Elementary STEM School of the Year. The District continues to provide students with educational experiences that not only actively engages them in STEM activities inside the classroom, but provides students with extracurricular opportunities such as the Annual STEM Celebration.

Representatives from Brookhaven National Lab and Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Bay Shore Middle School student, Fatema Rahman, as the 2018 Brookhaven National Lab Science Fair (BNL) 6th grade winner. Legislator Flotteron (3rd from left) with representatives from BNL, Fatema’s parents and sister.

Ms. Rahman’s project, “Does Using Organic Ingredients Affect The Baking Time,” was chosen as the winner in her grade. Her hypothesis for the experiment was, if a cake is baked with organic ingredients, then the bake time will differ as compared to a cake baked without organic ingredients because organic and synthetic fertilizers have different

effects on a plant, which could affect the ingredients made from the plant. In its 34th competition, the winner of each grade level from over 100 Suffolk County schools take part in BNL’s Elementary School Science Fair. Some 470 projects, created by over 500 Suffolk County children ranging from kindergarten to 6th grade, compete.

Supporting Those in Need In an effort to support families in need throughout the district, Connetquot High School has created a food pantry initiative, which was brought to fruition with the assistance of multiple departments throughout the building. Connetquot High School will be accepting donations to the pantry throughout

the summer, including nonperishable items such as dry cereal, cans of soup, boxes of rice and taco kits. If interested in making a donation, please contact the 10th-grade office at 631.244.2215, ext. 2191. The district would like to thank 10th-grade Assistant Principal Michelle Laux, Youth and Family Services coordinators Rosemary

Baldi-Abbate, Jessica Bubier Monahan, Kerrin Malinowski and Eileen McAlpine, Library media specialist Cheryl Carr and 11th-grade studentvolunteers and National Foreign Language Honor Society members Julia Chesnowitz and Erika Jarymiszyn for their efforts.

Tops at Connetquot As a result of 13 years of dedication and academic success, Connetquot High School seniors Dogan Okur and Giavana Prucha have been named the Class of 2018 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. During his high school career, Dogan has been a member of Science Olympiad, the robotics team, National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He will be attending Stony Brook University this fall, where he plans to focus his studies on the field of engineering. He graduates

having attained a weighted GPA of 102.76. Giavana has been a member of Science Olympiad, the National Honor Society and the Foreign Language Honor Society, where she served as vice president. Additionally, she played on the varsity field hockey team and has earned both the silver and bronze awards from the Girl Scouts. Giavana has committed to attending Syracuse University this fall, where she’ll be majoring in biology and chemistry with a

concentration in medicine. She will be graduating with an equally impressive weighted GPA of 102.68. Both students received the AP Scholar with Distinction title from the College Board, and have successfully enrolled in and completed at least eight AP courses throughout their high school careers. The Connetquot Central School District congratulates both students on this stunning accomplishment and wishes them well throughout all of their future endeavors.

Business Lesson Connetquot High School students enrolled in business classes recently volunteered to be guest teachers at Helen B. Duffield, Idle Hour and John Pearl elementary schools in an effort to enhance the younger students’ understanding of business and economics. At each of the schools, they conducted a handful of lessons and activities

dealing with banking, money management, entrepreneurship and business in the global economy. The students utilized a hands-on program called “More than Money” which was developed by Junior Achievement, the world’s largest organization dedicated to educating students about workforce readiness.

This JA program helps high school students to develop personal and professional success skills while teaching younger students to practice wise financial management. This mutually beneficial interaction between high school and elementary students empowers them to succeed in a competitive global economy.

Village Remembers

On May 26th, Mayor Allan M. Dorman, Village of Islandia, joined local war veterans and elected officials in its annual Memorial Day ceremony, in which those in attendance remembered all who died while in service to this country. Tom Brauner, Chaplain, Col. Francis S. Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144, delivered the invocation. Afterwards,

Mayor Dorman, a former U.S. Marine and a Vietnam War veteran, acknowledged the veterans’ groups in attendance and asked to remember village residents who served and have since passed away. The ceremony concluded with local elected officials joining veterans and village officials in placing ceremonial wreaths on the memorial. Chaplain Brauner

thanked Mayor Dorman for his assistance in establishing the VFW post in Islandia and noted that the mayor was the post’s first-ever president. Mayor Dorman also announced that the VFW post will soon relocate from Islandia Village Commons to a former residence located across the street from the memorial.

The World of Wigs on the expansive background of the wig industry. Students learned about the numerous types of hair solutions available to those who have experienced medical or natural hair loss. Additionally, they were introduced to different wig materials, how to choose the best option for each particular customer and the extensive work that goes into the production of

a wig. “We measure our day in hugs,” Wig Allure owner Ms. Kurfurst said. “It is a moving experience to give someone back the thing that they lost.” As part of the cosmetology class unit on wigs, the presentation allowed students to ask industry leaders questions about their specific area of the hair profession.

The May 22nd Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting celebrated the accomplishments of multiple individuals throughout the district, including students, retirees and those staff members receiving tenure. After a stunning performance from the Ronkonkoma Middle School General Music Guitar Ensemble with direction from Dr. Frank Saladino, the night’s recognitions were underway. Connetquot High School senior Alexis Falco was recognized for being an active member of Animal Conservation Club and Keep Islip Clean. In honor of such, she received the “Service to People in Need” award from the Town of Islip for her work with Relay For Life and the Animal Conservation Club fundraisers and was presented with a token of appreciation from the board of education for doing so. Connetquot High School senior Kayla Naldrett, also an active member of the Animal Conservation Club and Keep Islip Clean clubs, received the “Science”

award for her work in the clam program in which she helped raise 200,000 clams for seeding in the Long Island Sound and was recognized by the board for her accomplishments. Marina Duszak, the Connetquot High School senior who serves as president of student government, captain of the girls cross-country team and has raised money and awareness for both the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Relay for Life was chosen from 13,000 applicants to win a $20,000 scholarship from Foot Locker. The board of education presented Marina with a certificate for her accomplishments and thanked her for all of her efforts thus far. Sabah Bari and Nicholas Keddy, the Connetquot High School students who served as the Board of Education Student Government Representatives for the 2017-2018 school year, were recognized for their attendance and contributions to the community. Connetquot High School students Liza Aquilino, Sabah Bari, Matthew Downing and Vincent

Fasano were presented with tokens of appreciation for their social media presentation given at the Social Media Parent Forum held on May 2nd. Multiple district administrators, teachers and staff members who will be retiring from the district as of this school year were presented with a bouquet of flowers from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Lynda Adams and thanked for their cumulative years of service. The district congratulates Peter Harris, JoAnn Ianne, Dawn Jackson, John Lynch, Susan McNeil, Terry Mennona, Michelle Moretti, Patricia Nixon, David Pascarella, Lucy Pugli, Teresa Rowden and Peter Schultz. Additionally, in honor of their dedication and commitment, several administrators and staff members were honored and granted tenure by the board of education. First Responders Field On June 2nd, the Village of Islandia held its grand opening of the First Responders Recreational Ball Field, just in time for the summer. Mayor Allan Dorman and village officials were joined by local first responders, firefighters, and police officers; representatives from Delaware North and the Bolla Foundation; local war veterans and elected officials for this special event. The ceremony began with the unveiling and dedication of the memorial

honoring local responders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001. Mayor Dorman then led the dedication of the ball field and threw out the ceremonial first pitch. In addition to a stateof-the-art ball field and concession stand and memorial, the park also includes a walking path with exercise stations. Local businesses provided more than $2.5 million to make this project a reality, including Delaware North (the operator of Jake’s 58), the Bolla Foundation and

Breslin Realty. “We are proud to open the First Responders Recreational Ball Field to the residents,” Mayor Dorman said. “It is truly an honor to dedicate this park in the memory of our brave first responders. I foresee the park becoming the focal point of our village, where we will be able to come together as a community and enjoy an enhanced quality of life that living in a village provides.”

Beautification Day

On June 1st, Councilwoman Jane Bonner joined volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America Venturing Crew during their beautification day at Robert E. Reid, Sr. Recreation Center at the Town of Brookhaven’s Defense Hill Park in Shoreham. The crew is comprised of Boy and Girl Scouts from the community. The beautification project was part of Boy Scout Erich Fuhrmann’s

Eagle Scout project. Erich is a member of the Venturing Crew from the Troop 161 in Shoreham and earned his Eagle Scout rank with this project by extending the garden with two raised garden beds, adding two benches, and putting down fresh mulch in the garden and pumpkin trail. Councilwoman Bonner said, “When you have so many scouts working together, a lot can get done. I thank Erich and

everyone who volunteered to help with his Eagle scout project to make the recreation center a more beautiful place for our residents to enjoy.” The Robert E. Reid, Sr. Recreation Center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm and the evenings and weekends for special programs. Long Island Fight for Charity Long Island Fight for Charity will reveal the courageous men and women volunteer boxers who will enter training to prepare to box in the organization’s 15th Main Event this fall. The “2018 Boxer Announcement Reception” will be held on Tuesday, June 26th,

from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Club at Bethpage, 99 Quaker Meeting House Road, Farmingdale. Fight for Charity sponsors, boxers, fans and supporters will gather to learn who will be in this year’s boxer lineup, enjoy food and beverages and network at this upscale event.

This year’s popular and much anticipated Long Island Fight for Charity Main Event will take place in November. It is expected to attract more than 1,200 people and raise more than $200,000 for local not-for-profit charitable organizations. Since 2003, when Fight for Charity was

founded, it has supported Long Island charities including Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School and the National Foundation for Human Potential and more than 30 others. Over $1.1 million in funds have been raised and donated directly to assist individuals in need
