Magnificent Mathematicians Four Connetquot High School students displayed their excellence in mathematics as they recently competed against a number of fellow juniors and seniors in the nationwide MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge. The MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge, or, M3 Challenge as it’s alternatively known, spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool and as a viable, exciting profession. The Challenge

is to work on a real-world problem and submit a solution paper, within a 14-hour window during a weekend which took place this past March. The students’ faculty sponsor, Christopher Dolce, declared that the four student-participants – Dimitri Cavanagh, Justin Rosado, Aiden Spicciatie and Joe Vita – were entirely self-motivated, and, even though they did not win the $100,000 top prize, their submission was highly competitive and

was complimented by the judges. According to their official website, the M3 Challenge allows students experience what it’s like to work as a team to tackle a real-world problem under time and resource constraints, akin to those faced by professional mathematicians working in industry. Students Become Genetically Literate As a means of combining their love for literacy and science, a number of seventh grade students from Ronkonkoma Middle School were recently given the opportunity to take part in a conference call with Ellen T. Matloff, a genetic counselor and founder of My Gene Counsel. In preparation for their video chat, students enrolled in Danielle

Tauriello’s life science classes spent the past several weeks learning about genetics in order to assist with sparking discussion topics. In tandem with these lessons, students enrolled in Heidi Edmond’s English classes finished up reading the popular literary classic “The Giver” by Lois Lowry, which deals with several topics in genetics such as

genetic engineering and hereditary traits. During the conference call, Ms. Matloff, who was coincidentally college roommates with Mrs. Edmonds, presented several slides explaining her education and career path, and then answered a number of well-thought out questions from the students.

for math, students in Gianfortone’s class set out to publish a book that depicted where math is present in our everyday lives. Each student wrote a page for the book and created an illustration to accompany their writing, showcasing their artistic abilities.

At the conclusion of the project, students attended a “red carpet event” where family and friends were invited to hear the first reading of their new literary masterpiece before celebrating their impressive accomplishment.

HAVING FUN AT THE ‘BEACH’ - In celebration of summer being right around the corner, students enrolled in Connetquot High School’s Life Skills classes recently hosted a Luau-themed craft fair right from the comfort of their classroom setting. With assistance from teachers Amy Doerrie, Siobhan Guido and Danielle Orobello, the students created a number of beautiful handmade crafts which were available for purchase to both staff and students alike. New Ground is a non-profit organization that helps to break the cycle of homelessness right here in Nassau and Suffolk counties. This organization began all from the vision of an educator that was committed to providing a safe haven for those living in poverty. This educator saw that shelters were only providing a short-term fix to a problem that needed a real, lasting solution. After envisioning an organization that provided a holistic suite of support services while empowering participants to help themselves, she founded New Ground in 1991 to do just that.

Educators Share Best Practices A number of educators from the Connetquot Central School District recently attended the Distinctive Educator’s Institute’s sixth annual “Final Stretch” Conference that took place at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University campus in an effort to share best practices regarding the district’s premier English language arts department. At the literacy conference, which is targeted toward K-8 educators, Ronkonkoma Middle School educator Hallie Weil presented a workshop, “The Powerful Impact of Independent

Reading in Middle School.” During her presentation, Ms. Weil provided participants with a comprehensive understanding of the powerful impact that setting aside independent reading time in the middle school classroom can have upon student performance. Additionally, Connetquot faculty occupied the spotlight once again when Helen B. Duffield Elementary school teachers Karen Pitka and Stephanie Russo presented, “A Delicious Literary Treat: A Book Tasting to Delight Readers.” This dynamic duo highlighted their

creative, motivating spin on teaching genres in which they set up a mock “restaurant” setting in the school’s library where students are able to sample a number of literary genres. “In sharing their best practices in literacy instruction with other Long Island educators, Connetquot’s faculty shone brightly at the ‘Final Stretch’ Conference,” said Connetquot Central School District Director of ELA Christina Poppe. “It is with great pride that the district recognizes their drive, professionalism and accomplishments.”

RAISING ALLERGY AWARENESS - Students from the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School located in the Connetquot Central School District recently learned a number of important facts surrounding allergy awareness courtesy of school nurse, Pat Koster. During her presentation, Mrs. Koster informed the students that food allergies are most common in young children, as the following eight items cause 90 percent of most food allergy reactions - milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish. Additionally, the students took part in a fun activity in which they created interlocking paper links which featured words speaking to how to be a good friend to fellow students with allergies. Students Thank Local Business Personal Training students at the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology came together with Carpentry students to thank Mr. D’s Ultimate Fitness in Patchogue for their commitment to education. Two students, Elishia Proctor and Matt Martin of William Floyd UFSD, recently completed their spring internship at Mr. D’s Ultimate Fitness. The

Academy is the Career and Technical Education Program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES and has schools in Oakdale, Bellport, and Riverhead. Elishia and Matt came together with students from Mr. Postigilione’s Carpentry class to build a plyo box for the gym. Plyo boxes are used in workouts for jumping exercises. The box was decorated with and a vinyl wrap designed

by Mr. Placella’s Graphics class that showed the logo of the gym. Students learned to collaborate to achieve a common goal. Internships with local businesses are important for students to be career ready when they graduate. This internship will help students be prepared to work in a gym, or assist private personal training clients in the future.
