Zumba Workout

he Phys Ed staff at Connetquot’s Ronkonkoma Middle School opened National Physical Education Week with ZUMBA! Every student, and a good number of staff members, had the opportunity to learn the value of Zumba workout sessions. These high-energy workouts had the students dancing and singing as they exercised their muscles. Many of the students enjoyed the workouts so much that they gave up their lunch periods to come back!

Grant Received Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. is thrilled to announce that it has received a $5,000 grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to fund Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, which offers financial assistance to the Long Island public to spay/ neuter feral cats. This program aids in alleviating the tremendous feral cat overpopulation problem as

this discount incentive also enables the public to afford to help more cats. In 2003, Last Hope initiated its “Fix-A-Feral” voucher system, which provides assistance to the public with the cost of spay/ neuter and vaccines for feral cats by reducing the price at participating veterinary clinics. Voucher users must agree to participate in the TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) program, whereby the cats are returned (if not tame) to

Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program is geared to both seasoned cat caregivers as well as beginners who may only care for a handful of cats. Last Hope also lends out humane “Have a Heart” traps. “Fix-A-Feral” has subsidized the spaying and neutering of over 12,000 cats since it began ten years ago. “In the past, we have spent significant time planning fundraisers to support Last Hope’s “FixA-Feral” initiative,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope. “We hold a luncheon, a raffle and rely on donations from a generous corporate sponsor to fund our vouchers, but the number of feral cats on Long Island is immense and the requests for help are increasing. We begin issuing program vouchers in March to coincide with kitten season, and usually run out of funds by midNovember. We simply do

It is heartbreaking not to be able to assist every caller pleading for help, as well as every feral or cat colony that surfaces on Last Hope’s radar.” The generous grant from the ASPCA will aid in the distribution of vouchers for the “Fix-A-Feral” program to last for the entire year. At the height of kitten season, the time of year when shelters are most inundated with mother cats and kittens, the Last Hope cat hotline averages 50 calls a day. TNR is about population control and quality of life for feral cats. In an ideal world, all cats would have human contact and be socialized early in life so they can find loving homes. With Last Hope’s “Fix-A-Feral” program, fewer cats will be born into feral colonies, reducing the number of cats roaming Long Island streets and ending up in shelters. The ASPCA is helping Last Hope to accomplish this compassionate goal on Long Island.

reasonable, he or she may be experiencing one or more problems. It may be that he or she is not grasping concepts as they are taught in the classroom and therefore cannot do his or her homework independently. It’s possible that your child has difficulty concentrating. On the other end of the spectrum, if your child zips through homework too quickly, skipping problems and failing to check his or her work, he or she may not understand the purpose - and importance - of homework. Trouble sign #3: Your child struggles with reading. Reading trouble signs can vary and some are more noticeable. If you observe your child struggling to pronounce words correctly (or sound them out) or having similar issues, or if you see your child frequently skipping or guessing at words he or she does not know, talk with the teacher right away. Together, you can determine how to prevent your child from falling behind as reading

becomes more challenging - and a bigger part of all assignments. Trouble sign #4: Your child’s work is sloppy. Most children need to constantly work on organization, so don’t panic if your child’s backpack or desk isn’t as neat as it could be. However, if your child’s work is consistently messy or unreadable, this may indicate a lack of attention to detail that should be corrected sooner rather than later. Similarly, extreme disorganization to the point that a student cannot keep track of important assignments or homework is a bigger sign of problems to come. Trouble sign #5: Your child procrastinates. Some students are chronic procrastinators while others procrastinate when they dread the work ahead of them. If your child almost always puts off studying or homework until the last minute, start paying attention to the reasons. Is he or she avoiding doing so because the work is overly difficult? Does he or she

only procrastinate with a particular subject? As a parent, it is important to take notice of potential signs of school trouble so that you can promptly address any issues if needed. Stay alert for the warning signs, but also remember to maintain good communication with your child to encourage him or her to turn to you should things become difficult - in any area of his or her life. Let your child know that you are there for support and help if he or she needs it, and that no problem is too big to overcome. Dr. Raymond J. Without a doubt, some academic problems are easier to spot than others. Perhaps you’ve noticed a change in your child’s demeanor, but you’re unsure what exactly is going on. What are some of the most obvious - and less obvious - red flags that may indicate that your child is having a bigger school problem? Here are several academic trouble signs to watch for: Trouble sign #1: Your child is acting out. If your child has recently become defiant, angry or frustrated , there may be a direct correlation to something happening at school. Talk with your child and listen without judging. If your child will not talk with you, talk to the teacher about his or her observations and recommendations. Often, as school becomes difficult for a child, his or her selfesteem, confidence and happiness also suffer. Trouble sign #2: Homework takes longer than it should--or not long enough. The Phys Ed staff at Connetquot’s Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) opened National Physical Education Week with ZUMBA! According to Ms. Dee Kirwin, “Thanks to the RMS PTA Cultural Arts Committee and Guidance Counselor Tara Sullivan, Zumba instructor Raphael Francois was invited to work with our students.” Francois worked with students in each PE class on April 29th and 30th. Every student, and a good number of staff members,

had the opportunity to learn the value of Zumba workout sessions. These high energy workouts had the students dancing and singing as they exercised their muscles. Many of the students enjoyed the workouts so much that they gave up their lunch periods to come back for another session with Francois. Several staff members came by the gym to see what the excitement was all about, and joined in! Francois joined RMS

Phys Ed instructors Ms. Kirwin, Mr. Hertz and Mr. Ambrosini in challenging the students to promote physical fitness and good nutrition. At the end of each session Zumba instructor Francois would ask the students if they thought the workouts were hard, easy or fun. The answer to that question: EVERYONE thought it was fun! Thanks again to the PTA and Raphael Francois for the opportunity to exercise, and have fun, with ZUMBA!

LONGWOOD SERVICES - Longwood’s Memorial Day services were recently held on Monday, May 27th at Bartlett Pond Park on Middle Country Road in Middle Island. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi had the pleasure of hosting a tour of the Suffolk County Legislature for East Islip Boy Scout Pack 78. After touring the Legislature and learning about the functions of the Presiding Officer’s Office, Clerk’s Office, Budget Review Office and the Counsel to the Legislature, the boys

had the opportunity to hold a mock General Meeting. The boys proposed and voted on a law that would prohibit their parents from dancing within ten feet of their children. After some healthy debate, the proposal failed to gain enough support and was tabled. After the session, Cilmi answered questions

about his career and responsibilities. He said, “It was great to give the boys and their parents a taste of what it’s like being a legislator. They learned the importance of listening and being respectful, qualities that will serve them well in life no matter what they choose to do.”

Watching From The Wings By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, this coming weekend will mark the first dance recital in nearly 20 years at my studio that I will not be a part of. For the first time, I will have the pleasure of viewing the entire three-hour extravaganza from the comfort of my very own auditorium seat. Sure beats racing back and forth between numbers and quick changes to stand – more like hover – near the door, hoping to catch a glimpse of three minutes or so... and then hightailing it backstage in time to line up for my own dance! But seating arrangements aside, there will of course

be that wistful, bittersweet sensation that, just last year (and nearly two thirds of my life before that) that used to be me up on stage, decked out in full costume, makeup, hair… the whole deal. (Oh, and glitter. Can’t forget glitter.) As with any transition, it is often met with mixed emotions – that sense of knowing when the time has come to move on, yet sadness that you will be leaving your comfort zone of people and places and things you have grown to expect as part of your life. Time does move on, things do change; and, in the end, you eventually grow used to the sometimes subtle, sometimes drastic alterations

to “life as you know it.” It’s the same with graduations, with changes in residence or job – everything requires a period of adjustment. And then, without realizing it, there comes a day when you take a step back and realize that this has become the new norm. So here’s to that new norm, to sitting in the audience and being able to truly appreciate all the hard work and dedication that has gone into creating the spectacle before me. And if – no, when – I become nostalgic for my own time in the spotlight, I will call upon the 20 years of fond memories I was fortunate to be a part of... and smile.

GREAT STRIDES - On Sunday, June 2nd, thousands of supporters attended the Annual Great Strides 5K Cystic Fibrosis Walk at the Holtsville Ecology Center. Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs and sometimes other organs. People who have the disease often experience extreme difficulty in breathing, but fortunately, there have been significant advances in the treatment of the disease. Legislator Tom Muratore has recognized the achievements of Selden Fire Department’s Michael Cosgrove, Lieutenant of Truck Company 1. This past week, Lt. Cosgrove was awarded the Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award for Heroism. Legislator Muratore attended the ceremony and presented a Certificate of Recognition. Along with Cosgrove’s Liberty Mutual Firemark Award, the Selden Fire Department will receive

a $10,000 grant that will be used to purchase reflective post markers for the district’s public hydrants. These markers increase safety by helping the department locate fire hydrants at night and during times of heavy snow, thus making response times quicker. “Lt. Cosgrove is a man who not only exemplifies bravery, but fully appreciates the efforts of his own department. This past March, he ironically responded to a

house fire in the district that wound up being his own,” explained Legislator Muratore. “Thankfully his family escaped safely, but the home suffered severe damage. Despite this, Lt. Cosgrove refuses to be defeated. He continues to serve his community, not only with dedication and commitment, but with the increased public safety afforded by the grant money. I commend him and thank him wholeheartedly.”

MARCHING FOR MEMORIAL DAY - Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School 6th, 7th and 8th grade band students recently made their marching debut at the Bohemia Memorial Day Parade. The middle school students joined the Connetquot High School marching band in performing patriotic compositions for the hundreds of spectators at the parade.

RECOGNIZED FOR STEM RESEARCH - Connetquot Central School District’s Board of Education recently recognized two students, Brianna Santiago and Marina Fandaros, during their weekly board meeting. The students were honored for their participation in a four-week summer enrichment program at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). Their scientific research was later presented at the Long Island STEM Hub Celebration. Brianna and Marina plan to continue their research at BNL on the scientific principles of Dark Energy and Proton Dipoles this summer.

NEW CITIZENS WELCOMED - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco joined with U.S. Congressman Tim Bishop and Patchogue Village Mayor Paul Pontieri to welcome 26 new United States Citizens at the Knapp/Swezey Immigration & Citizenship Program End-of-the-Year Celebration held recently at the Patchogue-Medford Library.

On June 4th, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Minority Leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, awarded Jenna Romito, winner of the Brookhaven National Lab’s Elementary Science Fair’s Kindergarten age group, a proclamation in recognition of her accomplishments. Jenna’s project, “I Need A Band-Aid For My Boo Boo,” was selected as one

of seven winners chosen from over 500 entries to the annual science fair. Jenna compared the effectiveness of four different types of BandAids: Sport, Waterproof, Fabric, and Plastic. She gauged the types of BandAids by using a sample group of three boys and three girls and had them wear the different types of Band-Aids for a week.

After each member of the experimental group took a bath at night, Jenna determined the effectiveness of the BandAids by timing which one of the Band-Aids stayed on the longest. After rigorous testing, she eventually came to the conclusion that the Sport Band-Aid was the most effective of the four types of BandAids.

FBI Presentation

On Tuesday, March 23rd, Mrs. Vanessa Flowers’ Foreign Language students were treated to a very special presentation by a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent from the NYC office. The agent began his presentation by telling the students that ‘… a long time ago, I sat where you are sitting right now.” The students, and teachers, were seated in the Eric Martinsen Performing Arts Center at Connetquot High School. This Special Agent is a proud Connetquot graduate. (Because of this agent’s undercover

intelligence work with the FBI, his image, and identity have been deleted.) He talked to the students about his work with FBI, the requirements for applying to the agency, and how important it is for agents to be fluent in foreign languages. He shared several anecdotes about his anti-terrorism work, and how his ability to speak a language other than English, made his work that much more thorough. Students asked the agent about his work, and about the terror attack in Boston. While he was not sent to Boston, several

agents from his New York office were sent to help with the investigation. This Special Agent urged the students to work at what they enjoy at school. He assured them that the study of computer technology, the potential of internet communication, and fluency in foreign languages would open many doors for them once they graduated, high school, and college. Building with a purple glow to commemorate National Stroke Awareness Month, further public awareness of strokes and its effect on stroke victims, their families and friends as well as bringing attention to the 6th Annual Judy’s Run for Stroke Awareness and Prevention. Hearing health affects a man’s lifestyle, and if he wants to stay active, feel younger and remain socially and professionally engaged, he should address any hearing loss he may be experiencing. This year, National Men’s Heath Week runs from June 10th through June 16th. To help men address their hearing health and determine if they need a comprehensive hearing test by a hearing healthcare professional, BHI is offering the free, quick, and confidential online BHI Hearing Check at www.hearingcheck.org. Studies show that men who address their hearing loss with the use of hearing instruments or other appropriate treatment and accommodations most often improve their quality of life because it helps them maintain a more engaged, active lifestyle at both work and home. Fortunately, the vast majority of people with hearing loss can benefit from hearing instruments. In fact, eight out of ten hearing instrument users say they’re satisfied with the changes that have occurred in their lives specifically due to their hearing instruments. For decades, research has shown an association between unaddressed hearing loss and a whole range of physical, mental and emotional conditions-from depression, anxiety, and strained relationships to cognitive decline, difficulty learning new tasks, and even failing grades. A national BHI study, in fact, uncovered income loss as an under-recognized consequence of leaving hearing loss unaddressed. People with untreated hearing loss, the study found, lose as much as $30,000 in income annually, depending on their degree of loss. But the use of hearing instruments was found to reduce the risk of income loss dramatically-by 90 to 100 % for those with milder hearing loss, and from 65 to 77% for those whose hearing loss was severe to moderate. The study also found that people with severe hearing loss who do use hearing instruments are twice as likely to be employed as their peers who don’t use them. In recent years, considerable information has emerged on the link between hearing loss and several common chronic diseases that men suffer-including heart disease, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression. While research is still needed to fully understand the association between hearing loss and these illnesses, this relatively new information makes it all the more important that men take the BHI Hearing Check and include hearing health as part of their routine medical care. Long Island Hearing and BHI remind men that there are simple things they can do to protect their hearing. Listening to smartphones and MP3 players only at a low volume, and wearing earplugs in noisy environments like sporting events, clubs, concerts, or when using power tools and riding motorcycles are examples. Senior Saves A Life

Longwood High School 11th and 12th Grade Music and Art Festival is, for many students, the culminating showcase of their talents. But, at last night’s event, the performance became secondary to a real-life drama when a grandfather collapsed and was saved by quick thinking bystanders, including senior Kayla Parmely, who used her emergency training to restart the heart of the concert goer. Kayla, a member of the Middle Island Fire Department, is certified in CPR and AED (Automated External Defibrillator). She said her instincts and training kicked in as she sprinted across the auditorium in her flip flops to help out.

“She is responsible for saving this man’s life,” Kayla’s trainer, 1st Lt. Christopher Welga of the Middle Island Fire Department said. “She immediately recognized a true emergency and didn’t freak. She did exactly what she needed to do,” he said. “I heard someone yell to grab the AED, but no one seemed to know how to use it,” Kayla said. Someone had started CPR and she jumped in to help in the compression rotation. “I told them I was trained on the AED and just took over. I had to shock his heart and then keep checking his pulse rate, breathing and chest rate. You have to make sure the blood is flowing,” she said. When the EMTs arrived, she directed them to administer oxygen and gave them his medical history. He was breathing on his own and didn’t need CPR by the time the Yaphank EMTs arrived. According to Lt. Welga, his colleagues in Yaphank Fire Department who manned the ambulance were amazed by Kayla’s

action. The man was alert on the way to the hospital and asked them if his heart had really stopped. The very composed high school senior did admit to having trouble sleeping last night. “All that adrenalin kept me awake,” she said. Kayla said the man she saved is the grandfather of one of her friends in physics class. She was relieved to find out today that he is doing well. Principal Maria Castro gave Kayla a hug in the morning. Her heroism became the talk of the school even before she was congratulated on morning announcements. Kayla is one of a set of triplets. Her brother Eric also trained with her. They are among the 30 Longwood High School students who came through the training as junior members of the fire department. After graduation, Kayla is heading for SUNY Oneonta, where she will study psychology and be part of their EMT program.

What Is Crew? in boats dubbed “Shells,” can either be solo or in groups of 2, 4 or 8. I am on a boat consisting of eight, who have been rowing together for St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip for three years, with friendship being a crucial factor to success. A few weekends ago, my boat competed at the Long Island Championships, held in Oyster Bay. Larger boats are allotted a coxswain, whose job is quite complex. This lightweight coxswain must steer the boat, as well as motivate his crew and, ultimately, win the race. He is truly the core of a first-class boat. Rowers either scull or sweep, with the former using two smaller oars, one in each hand. A sweep rower is almost always in a larger

boat, with the exception being a pair. A sweep rower has one oar and must maintain balance, while still ensuring textbook technique and absolute power. As a rower, I can truly appreciate the physical strength and endurance that an athlete partaking in this sport must command. Most rowers train both on a rowing machine and on the water 5-7 days a week and are extremely dedicated to the pursuit of a gold medal. For the countless hours an athlete puts in throughout the year, he or she is rewarded with less than 10 races, each consisting of less than 6 minutes. It takes a focused mindset to be a rower, but if you can handle the sport, the benefits are endless.

“Your Gildersleeve is my Roger” the words were barely audible through tears and cries of Roger’s name. After having been missing for more than a year from Lindenhurst and turning up on Route 110 in Amityville, Roger, an almost 11 year-old cat was on his way home thanks to a little good fortune and the help of South Bay’s Neighbor Pet’s Place. Charlene Brass recognized her long lost cat’s photo in the April 16th

issue of the paper the day the Babylon Shelter photo was published. This photo was definitely her cat, Roger, who had disappeared in March 2012. Charlene looked for Roger for months and visited the shelter several times searching for him. Lost pet reunions like this, especially cat reunions, only happen once or twice a year; yet, each time one does, it reminds distraught owners never to give up hope.
