The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation I FISH NY program, in cooperation with the Nassau County Boy Scouts Theodore Roosevelt Council, will offer a free Freshwater Fishing Clinic on Saturday, June 14th. The clinic will be held at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “Clinics of this type have received overwhelming
responses in the past, demonstrating the intense interest in freshwater fishing on Long Island,” Regional Director Peter A. Scully said. “In these hectic times, fishing is a wonderful family activity that can develop into a hobby that provides a lifetime of fun, relaxation, and opportunity to slow down and rediscover the natural world that sustains us. We encourage people to participate in this exciting event.”
Free loaner fishing rods and bait, supplied by I FISH NY, will be available for use at the clinic. The event will begin with basic fishing instruction. The United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has awarded a grant of $20,000 to Family Service League (FSL) under its Military Family Assistance Project community initiative. This grant will address the immediate financial needs of Long Island’s post-9/11 military families. These funds are used to help military families with a range of immediate financial needs, such as child care expenses, auto repairs and moving expenses. FSL has been operating this program with funding from the UWLI since 2011. “FSL values our partnership with the United Way of Long Island”, stated Karen Boorshtein, President and CEO of Family Service League. “We look forward to our continued work together on this important project in support of our local military families.”

WOMEN’S RESOURCE FAIR - Legislator Tom Muratore, Legislator John Kennedy, and the Middle Country Public Library recently sponsored their 1st Annual Women’s Resource Fair at the library’s Centereach location. Nearly 40 vendors participated, offering goods and services geared specifically toward women. From spa services, health and wellness, legal assistance, and financial and career planning, many spectators browsed the library floor to see what vendors had to offer.
GOLDEN GAMES - Ten residents from St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park participated in the 11th Annual Suffolk County Golden Games held at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. Teams from twelve nursing facilities across the county competed in five different events at the all-day sports competition. St. Johnland’s team, which practices for many months to develop competitive skills, took part in team and individual contests and brought home a gold medal in basketball and a silver in the wheelchair relay. Congratulations to the entire team!
by hard work on the part of the entire team. Perhaps our impressive year will lead to advances in the future. With any luck, our bid for a national title ends in a medal. Even if it does not, I can honestly say that my four years as a St. John’s rower have left me a better athlete and a better person. This team has left an imprint on me that will last forever. I will never forget my coaches, my teammates or the memories we’ve formed along the way. I started the season as a substitute, and now I’m on a boat, rowing toward a national championship, with a group of friends I would not trade for the world.

in the realm of high school crew. With any luck, some of our boats can bring home some hardware, as we build a dynasty that will continue for future athletes. When I entered as a freshman, my team was mediocre. Now, as I leave, my team is outstanding. The hard work put in by both the athletes and the coaches, combined with significant involvement from the parents, helped to solidify SJB as a force both on the water and in training. I like to think that I have made a positive difference on this team - and maybe I have - but the opportunity to compete on the highest stage available was earned

This weekend, I am competing in the National Championship for rowing. As the culmination of four years of hard work, this regatta marks the end of my rowing career. Although I started as a very poor athlete, I grew to love the sport. Now, I’m representing St. John the Baptist in the Varsity Quad, along with three of my best friends. I’m also competing in the Varsity Pair. This year proved to be one of the most productive in recent years, as we have six boats competing in this national championship. With so many entries, I believe we have put St. John’s on the map, as a force to be reckoned with

There are many families within our community coping with Alzheimer’s and the challenges it presents,” says William Kent, Director of Long Island Hearing.“ At Long Island Hearing, we want to help ensure that the hearing health of those in our community with Alzheimer’s is appropriately managed. Hearing loss, when left unaddressed, can compound the difficulties that people with Alzheimer’s and their families already face, however in many cases, the appropriate use of hearing aids can benefit people with Alzheimer’s.” There is strong evidence that hearing impairment contributes to the progression of cognitive dysfunction in older adults. Unmanaged hearing loss can interrupt the cognitive processing of spoken language and sound, regardless of other coexisting conditions.
But when an individual has both Alzheimer’s and hearing loss, many of the symptoms of hearing loss can interact with those common to Alzheimer’s, making the disease more difficult than it might be if the hearing loss had been addressed. Studies have shown that although a significantly higher percentage of people with Alzheimer’s disease may have hearing loss than their normally aging peers, they are much less likely to receive attention for their hearing needs. “A comprehensive hearing assessment should be part of any Alzheimer’s diagnosis and any hearing loss should be addressed,” says Kent. “By addressing the hearing loss, we can help improve quality-oflife for those who have Alzheimer’s and help them live as fully as possible.” Numerous studies have linked untreated hearing loss to a wide
range of physical and emotional conditions, including impaired memory and ability to learn new tasks, reduced alertness, increased risk to personal safety, irritability, negativism, anger, fatigue, tension, stress, depression, and diminished psychological and overall health. Long Island Hearing is urging caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s to also address their own hearing health—recognizing the negative impact that untreated hearing loss can have on their own quality of life and emotional well-being. Caregivers can determine if they need a comprehensive hearing check by a hearing professional by taking a free, quick, and confidential online hearing test at www.hearingcheck. org. Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the
magazines and blogs, over the broadcast airwaves… but rarely have the opportunity to personally acknowledge. This year, as an added bonus, PCLI honored past Outstanding Journalists as part of their initial class of Hall of Fame inductees. To see these giants of the industry assembled before a crowd of their peers was easily the highlight of an evening that had many memorable moments. It is nights like this that remind me why I chose to go into the field of Journalism to begin
with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

EXHIBIT UNVEILED - The unveiling of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s exhibit was recently held at MacArthur Airport. Portraits and displays of prominent athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities that made a name for themselves in the Islip community now line the walls along the path that travelers take while embarking and disembarking aircraft. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame used to be housed in a permanent location, but was forced to close due to a lack of funds. Now the Hall of Fame organization is establishing exhibits at various locations throughout Suffolk County. The men and women featured at the MacArthur Airport exhibit are all specific to Islip Town, but the Hall of Fame’s focus is on the accomplishments of Suffolk County athletes as a whole.
