Tickets Anyone? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Summer concert season is upon us! I have to admit, I went a little ticket crazy this time around. The instant the Jones Beach schedule was posted, I eagerly scanned it for shows I wanted to see, and then scoured the internet for any special pre-sales, Groupons, etc. that I could find. The problem – well, a temporary inconvenience, as the case may be – is that some summer tours seem to be announced earlier each year and, while there are plenty eager to attend, few people are willing, or able, to commit to such expenses in the middle of Christmas shopping. Me, I ignore such … what’s the word … logic? Rather, I
am of the philosophy that, if you want to do something badly enough, why should you wait for tickets to be sold out and appear on resale sites for triple the price? Spontaneity is key – just press that “purchase” button and worry about minor details like cost and finding a concert companion later! Of course, needless to say, after realizing that I had accumulated tickets to about seven or eight shows over these next several months, I began to panic. Slightly. Trying to remember who likes what types of music, the corresponding dates, times, locations, the cost factor … it’s a bit like being an event planner, desperately trying to fill each slot appropriately. The ultimate
goal, of course, is to not find myself solo the day of the show, contemplating a.) going by myself, b.) attempting to resell the tickets, or c.) worst of all, losing the money laid out and not going at all. A truly lose/lose situation. By the time you read this, I will have attended concert number one (guest confirmed, tickets paid in full), with numbers two and three to follow shortly in the coming week. A bit of overkill, I know. But that’s what summer is all about – enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, taking in some music, film, culture … whatever the case may be. This is what we look forward to all year. Let’s not forget to savor it now that it’s arrived.

Shark Tournament out. Over the course of two days, 117 boats and 702 anglers brought in 33 fish, including ten Makos, 14 Threshers and nine Blue Sharks. The heaviest shark was a 377-pound Thresher landed by Ed Groppe aboard Captain David Walters’ “The Reel Deal.” Of the sharks that were weighed in, more than 750 pounds of edible shark meat was donated to the Long Island Council of Churches’ food pantry to help feed those in need. The entry fee is $1,250 per boat. For sports fishermen who would like to get in on the competition but do not own a boat, the Star Island Yacht Club Charter Boat fishing fleet is available for hire for either one day or both days of the tournament. Each of Star Island’s boats can accommodate up to six anglers. Star Island wishes to advise all prospective participants that, as
per Environmental Conservation Law 130338, New York State law now requires that all shark tournament participants use non-stainless steel non-offset circle hooks exclusively. Dockage is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Transient rates for the tournament are $5.50 per foot for up to 59 feet, $6.00 per foot for 60 feet and up. Utilities are $30 for 30-amp and single-cord 50-amp service and $50 for two-cord 50-amp service. In addition, Star Island now has high-speed fuel pumps. Star Island Yacht Club has announced that it will hold its 29th Annual Shark Tournament on June 18th20th. This annual Father’s Day event has become a Montauk tradition and a major happening, with over 100 boats participating annually, drawing thousands of spectators. Cash prizes will be awarded for the heaviest shark in the tournament and the heaviest shark for each day. The top three prizes will also be awarded for the heaviest mako, heaviest blue shark and heaviest shark of another species. In addition to this outstanding competition, all sportsmen can contribute to the study of the shark by tagging and releasing sharks that do not meet strict weight requirements. INTERNET SAFETY TIPS - The Connetquot School District recently welcomed Suffolk County Police Officer Elisa McVeigh to Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to talk to more than 60 K-8th grade students about internet safety, stranger safety, online bullying and sound decision making.
Good Samaritans Honored On Monday morning, May 25th, as F-22 Fighter Jets flew overhead, employees of the Connetquot Public Library gathered to march in their first Memorial Day Parade. As the jets soared through the air, marking the end of their appearance at the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, it was a reminder of why we were all assembled together. Memorial Day is a day of remembrance, a day to honor those who lost their lives while serving in the country’s armed forces. From the beginning of the parade at Hubal Street and Ocean Avenue,
members of the Bohemia Fire Department, distinguished Veterans, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and local community members prepared to march down Church Street to Smithtown Avenue. Along the parade route, residents congregated outside their homes and lined the streets with their flags and support. From behind a banner of service and support, the Connetquot Public Library marched for the first time. Residents of the Arbors, including many Veterans, sat beside the white picket fence viewing the passing
parade. It reminds us all of the tremendous sacrifices our Veterans and families have endured from past generations until today. At the end of the parade, Bohemia resident and State Senator Tom Croci, spoke about the proud heritage of service in our local community and the cherished principles of strength and freedom. On behalf of the library, Director Kim DeCristofaro took part in the placing of the community wreaths at the Veterans Memorial reminding us that we stand upon their legacy with pride and gratitude.
At the May 21st Town Board meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board presented Certificates of Appreciation to Suffolk County Police Officers Frank Saracino and Keith Murphy, and Thomas Earl
for their heroic actions that saved the life of an elderly woman. On May 3rd, a fire broke out at 36 Forest Road in Centereach at 3:15 in the morning, trapping the woman in her upstairs bedroom. Upon arrival,
the officers from the 6th Precinct found the house fully engulfed in flames. Mr. Earl, who lives across the street from the house, provided ladders and all three climbed to the second floor and rescued the woman.

Luminary Ceremony
In support of Longwood School District’s Relay for Life event, more than 1,400 fifth and sixth grade students participated in the Fourth Annual Luminaria Ceremony held at Longwood Middle School on Thursday, May 28th. To honor family and
friends who lost the fight with cancer, those currently fighting and those who have beaten cancer, the students decorated hundreds of luminaria bags and placed them in the shape of an awareness ribbon. The lit bags symbolize hope for a cure for a disease that has
claimed so many lives. Through various fundraising events held throughout the year, middle school staff and students raised more than $6,300 in support of the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.
HOPE Program Eight Longwood High School seniors have successfully completed Stony Brook’s innovative Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook University faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th graders and preps them for future careers in the health industry. The HOPE Program promotes and fosters the development of promising high school students from underserved, racially and ethnically diverse
communities in the pursuit of a college education and future opportunities. Program activities provide educational support as well as mentorship and volunteer opportunities. Students experience a variety of health care professions through educational modules that expose them to classroom lectures, SAT preparation classes, as well as handson learning experiences. The culmination of the program is the student’s selection of a mentor in the department of their choice. “This program provided
me with a broader experience in the medical field and solidified my future professional career,” said Longwood senior Griffen Camberdella. Since the program’s inception in 2005, Longwood’s HOPE graduates have enrolled in various colleges and universities, including Duke University, St. Joseph’s, Stony Brook University, Boston University, Suffolk Community, St. John’s University, MIT, to name a few.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently welcomed the newest class of kindergarten students-to-be and their parents to campus for a program orientation. Incoming students and parents had the opportunity to practice safety procedures, meet Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden, teachers, staff and bus drivers and ask questions.
MODEL UN - Connetquot High School recently hosted over 100 local high school students representing 13 Long Island high schools for the 2015 Model UN Conference. Connetquot’s Model UN Club assumed the role of national ambassadors, simulating what goes on at the United Nations. Students debate current issues, draft resolutions, plot strategy and negotiate with supporters and adversaries. Each student was assigned to represent one nation and placed in one of seven committees to discuss important global concerns.

BEAUTIFYING CAMPUS - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School students recently finished beautifying two courtyard gardens on campus. The fifteen students are part of the Slocum Garden Club, which uses contributions from teachers, a financial grant from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC), a generous financial investment by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association and donated plants from the Town of Islip to improve their school courtyards.
LIFE SKILLS STUDENTS - A group of high school students and special needs teacher Ms. Amy Doerrie of Connetquot High School recently visited preschool students at Connetquot Central School District’s Arthur Premm Connetquot Alternative Preschool (CAPS). The older students acted as teachers and led a day of ‘bug themed’ activities and fun for the preschoolers. Arthur Premm CAPS students enjoyed listening to stories and playing fun games.
THANK YOU PARTY - Connetquot High School foreign language teachers Eileen McGinnis and Adriana DeFelice recently teamed up with students and staff to organize a special tea party in the library as a thank you for Connetquot High School secretaries. A violinist serenaded the guests as teachers, students and staff congratulated and thanked the secretaries, letting them know they are loved and appreciated.
RAISING CHICKS - Connetquot Central School District Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Chairperson Mrs. Bethanie Rizzo introduced a program designed to teach first, second and third grade students how to raise and build nurturing environments for young animals using their understanding of STEM basics. First grade students raised hermit crabs, second grade students raised chicks and crayfish and third grade students raised butterflies.
DINNER AND A SHOW - Students from Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Musical Theater Club recently performed a special dress rehearsal of their major musical production, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying for over 100 senior citizens during their 12th annual Senior Citizen Dinner & Show. The Connetquot Senior Citizen Council partnered with the Connetquot Central School District to host the event.
Edward J. Bosti Elementary School teacher-aide Mrs. Christine Tallman recently received a proclamation from the Suffolk County Legislature on behalf of the citizens of the county for her quick-thinking reaction in rescuing a student.
Mrs. Tallman used the Heimlich Maneuver to remove an obstruction in one student’s throat. Her quick reaction to the distressed student dislodged the item from his throat and possibly saved his life. Suffolk County Legislator William
J. Lindsay III visited the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to present the proclamation to Mrs. Tallman. Edward J. Bosti Principal Dr. Gail Cholden were also present to congratulate the local hero.

Scholarship Recipients The Long Island-based credit union NEFCU has awarded 82 students from high schools across Long Island each with a $500 voucher to use toward their college education, as part of its annual Making a Difference Scholarship program. In total, NEFCU granted $41,000 to graduating seniors from local high schools across Long Island. The individual winners will be announced in June at their respective high
school’s scholarship award ceremonies. Each participating high school’s guidance department selected one graduating senior of its choice based on a minimum four-year average of 90%, as well as service to his or her community and school. Since the Making a Difference Scholarship program’s inception more than 10 years ago, NEFCU has awarded more than $1,000,000 to Long Island high school and college
students. In addition to meeting the academic qualifications and outstanding service to both their school and their community, each student must attend a two- or four-year college or university after graduating this spring. Winners of the Making a Difference High School Scholarship are eligible to apply for NEFCU’s Premier Making a Difference Scholarship, a $20,000 scholarship (paid
over four years) offered to recipients of NEFCU’s High School and Family Scholarships to help fund their college education. NEFCU also offers several other scholarships for undergraduate and graduate college students. “Promoting higher education is such an important part of our community outreach, and it gives us such great pride to help so many local Long Island students achieve this goal,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice
president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “Our Making a Difference Scholarship program is a great way for us to foster college education and reward those deserving students who have worked so hard in school.” This year’s applications were open to nearly all Long Island high schools. Out of the 82 participating high schools, 23 are located in Suffolk County and 59 are located in Nassau County.

School superintendents, administrators and parents acknowledged and honored the highest achieving students of Suffolk County’s Class of 2015 during the Suffolk County School Superintendents Association’s 21st Annual Valedictorian Luncheon, held at the Hyatt Regency Wind Watch Hotel in Hauppauge. The celebratory event was punctuated with music provided by the Islip High School Jazz Ensemble, who performed under the direction of Steve Campanella. Congratulating the students on their hard work and academic achievements were Dr. Roberta A. Gerold, SCSSA president and Middle Country School District superintendent of schools; Susan A. Schnebel, SCSSA president-elect
and Islip School District superintendent of schools; Dr. Charles T. Russo, SCSSA vice president and East Moriches School District superintendent of schools; and Lars Clemensen, SCSSA secretary and Hampton Bays School District superintendent of schools. Keynote speaker Roger Tilles, a member of the New York State Board of Regents, encouraged the valedictorians to always put things in perspective, develop a backbone, become proactive and involved, use imagination and creativity to propel forward, and find a job that matters. “Love what you do and feel that it matters,” Tilles said. “There is no greater fun than that.” Each valedictorian was called to the stage to receive a certificate and
gift of recognition. During their acknowledgment, the universities they plan on attending were announced, along with their intended majors. The impressive and prestigious list of schools included Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, Duke University, Fordham University, Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Villanova University and Yale University. The SCSSA and its corporate partners also awarded 10 scholarships to graduates planning to pursue a career in education or social services. This was the only event in which the Class of 2015 valedictorians were honored together, and it was a truly memorable occasion for all in attendance.
