This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

Emily conducted a twomonth experiment where she monitored stop sign activity and gathered research from the New York State and Suffolk County Traffic Safety

Emily ultimately concluded that young men are more likely run through stop signs than older men or women of any age group and she further linked her findings to insurance rates. Emily plans on continuing her research in the future by expanding the study across state and country lines to help influence better driver education programs and licensing laws. “Scientific proficiency is as important now as it has ever been, given the societal and economic importance of STEM programs,” said Legis. Lindsay. “It is beyond encouraging to see these young scientists gaining the skillset they need to further advance the fields of science, math, and technology. Safe Summer Youth Councilman Michael Loguercio has announced that the Town of Brookhaven’s South Country Safe Summer Youth Program will run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights beginning July 12th through August 18th, from 8 to 11 p.m. at Martha Avenue Park in Bellport.

The program offers a safe, supervised place for Brookhaven youth under the age of 20 to congregate and socialize on summer evenings and participate in a variety of activities including basketball and music. Free snacks will be available. The program is a collaborative effort between the Town of

Brookhaven and the Suffolk County Police Department, who provide a police officer to ensure safety. The South Country Safe Summer Youth Program has been designated an alcohol and drug free youth area.

Budding young scientists filled the auditorium of the Suffolk County Legislature on Wednesday to educate Legislators on their outstanding projects that won first place accolades at this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Science Fair. From kindergarteners to 6th graders, students examined, hypothesized, and tested theories relating to gravitational pull, velocity, speed, deceleration, and stoppage time. Legislator Bill Lindsay was fortunate enough to have two winning students from his district. Joseph Malossi, of Sayville, and Emily Denton, of Bayport, both received proclamations for their winning projects. Joseph Malossi is a fourth grade student at Cherry Avenue Elementary School who crafted his project on centrifugal force after gaining inspiration on the Gravitron Ride at a local summer carnival. Joseph used bean plants to study the effect of centrifugal

Eastern Suffolk BOCES Database Manager Bob Cuce survived two tours in Vietnam. Cuce was drafted in 1969, went through basic infantry training at Fort Dix, New Jersey, received advanced training in field artillery at Fort Sill, and then was shipped over to Vietnam. His military occupational training changed from field artillery to antiaircraft artillery. He was assigned to the 4/60th ADA Battalion First Field Forces II Corps but ultimately was assigned to E Battery 41st Artillery as a gunner on a Quad 50. Cuce served on a specially-converted fiveton truck and survived two tours in Vietnam after traveling roads that were mined, booby-trapped, and ambushed. He strives to help veterans, past and present, as First Vice President of the National Dusters, Quads & Searchlights Association (NDQSA). This

year with supplemental donations from Eastern Suffolk BOCES and Academy students from the Bixhorn Technical Center, $5,410.75 will be donated to the Fisher House Foundation in Tennessee at the 34th Annual NDQSA Reunion. “My organization is comprised of air defense artillery soldiers that served in Vietnam and we have a Good Works Committee,” said Cuce. Each year, Cuce and members of NDQSA raise donations to give to the Fisher House Foundation because 94% of the donations go directly to help veterans past and present. This year, Cuce was surprised when he received a phone call from Art, Design, and Visual Communications Teacher Talia Cliffe. She asked him to come by her classroom because her students had done some fundraising for his organization and she wanted to present him with the proceeds.

Cliffe said, “It was our privilege to help Bob Cuce, NDQSA, and veterans because we owe them so much. NDQSA goes out of their way every year, at their reunions, to help other soldiers. We wanted to help those efforts.” For several weeks, students raised awareness on R.E.D. Friday which stands for Remember Everyone Deployed. R.E.D. Friday is a grass roots organization created by relatives and children of veterans. Cuce said, “People wear red on Fridays to represent the blood that was split by veterans both past and present.” Students from the Computer Repair Program, Art, Design, and Visual Communications Program, and Skills USA wore red on Friday for several weeks to raise awareness and raised $410.75 by selling muffins. Cuce was moved by the donation and grateful for the efforts of the students.

Making a Difference

Students at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Bellport Academic Center at Patchogue-Medford High School special education included site fostered compassion for each other, animals, and society. The students went on a field trip to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter and were given a tour of the facility. They were introduced to Brooklyn, a 12 year-old dog that lost her home. ESBOCES Social Worker Lynn Walsh said, “We are hoping that someone will adopt her and give her a good home where she can spend her final years.”

Walsh added, “The students had such compassion for the animals at the shelter, especially Brooklyn. They asked to hold a fundraiser to collect items to donate to the shelter.” Art Teacher Jean Kleifgen-Guli got involved with the cause. “The idea was to take the compassion the students were feeling and translate that into inspirational artwork and poetry,” she said. The students felt very strongly about how the animals were treated and the importance of shelters, adoptions, and animal rescues.

Their artful message made an impact. Cat and dog food, toys, treats, blankets, and other items started pouring in. The students recently went back to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter to deliver the donations and were presented with Certificates of Appreciation. Student artwork will be on display at Sketchbook Studio in Patchogue from Wednesday, June 9th to Thursday, June 16th and will be available for viewing by the public during gallery hours. The American Heart Association’s 7th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk was held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue.

Student members of the Middle Country Business Advisory Board partnered with the Town of Brookhaven to host its Sixth Annual eWaste (recyclable electronics) collection. Students created eWaste sites at both Newfield and Centereach High Schools and collected a record 3.5 tons of recyclable electronics to help protect the environment. Town of

RECYCLE BIN PROJECT - On May 27th, Councilman Michael Loguercio visited the Middle Island Caring for Kids Center at the City on a Hill Church in Middle Island and the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport to thank the children who participated in the Town of Brookhaven’s Recycle Bin Project. They worked together to decorate 55 gallon drums with a recycling theme which will be placed in town parks and used as recycling receptacles.

Golf Classic Set

Some 190 golfers teed off to benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation during the 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, held on May 16th, at the Glen Oaks Club in Old Westbury. The event, which has been sponsored by Astoria Federal Savings Bank for the past 19 years, raised $265,000 for the hospital’s neurosciences and honored Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FAANS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery and Director of Neurosurgical Services. Dr. Mullins is a board certified neurosurgeon and founder of Long Island Neurosurgical & Pain Specialists. Henry Schreiber, Vice Chair of the Good Samaritan Hospital

Foundation Board and an inaugural member of the golf committee, said, “I think it’s one of the best outings that we’ve had. It appeared that Dr. Mullins was a very substantial draw and we are very grateful to him. It was a great opportunity for those attending to enjoy an excellent course and we have had some very good comments from the golfers. Adding tennis was also very rewarding and everyone seemed to have a great day. It was the best fundraiser that we have had.” Mr. Schreiber said, “We are grateful to all of our corporate sponsors and individuals who worked together to make the Golf Classic such a tremendous success,” including Astoria

The success of the event prompted an announcement that plans are to return to the Glen Oaks Club for the 20th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament, which will host the Barclay’s Tournament in 2017.

MOTHER’S DAY TEA - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School recently hosted its annual Mother’s Day Tea Party. During the event, students in grades X-Y recited poems they wrote and sang songs for an audience of their mothers and grandmothers. The students and their special guests also sat together at colorfully decorated tables to enjoy tasty cupcakes, teas and other treats. The purpose of this event was to help students understand the value of expressing appreciation and enable them to be creative in a safe, fun environment.

Suffolk Federal recently honored North Babylon High School students who completed the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, a web-based education program which supports financial education at schools throughout Suffolk County. Suffolk Federal partners with EverFi, Inc. to bring this interactive financial management program to participating local high school students at no cost to the schools or taxpayers. The students received certificates during an exciting ceremony at the high school. “These students are our future generation. The more we can do to help them grow and prosper, the more our country will benefit,” explained William J. O’Brien, Suffolk Federal’s President and CEO. “Suffolk Federal is proud to partner with EverFi to bring financial education to local students, to prepare each one of them for a sound financial future and to shine a light on the importance of financial literacy.” The 10-unit course includes over six hours of programming covering a variety of financial

topics such as savings, investments, credit cards, and student loans and other critical financial literacy concepts. Through the platform, students became certified in several topics related to personal finance, allowing them to become more informed and responsible citizens. The program uses the latest in new media technology - simulations, avatars and gaming - to bring complex financial concepts to life for today’s digital generation. In 2015, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) highlighted EverFi’s schools-based financial education programs in a report on Advancing K-12 Financial Education: A Guide for Policymakers. According to Samin Alam, a junior at the high school, “The Suffolk Federal Scholars Program allows students to focus on the financial aspects of not only getting through college, but the distant future. This program has comprehensively prepared me for what the future has to offer and also educated me on several topics in which I had little to no knowledge beforehand,” he added.

“Our goal as educators is to prepare our students for a successful future, a job which often extends beyond a typical classroom,” said Maria DelVecchio, Business Teacher at North Babylon High School. “Partnerships across school districts and private sector institutions allow educators to provide important educational supplements, such as the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program, and enable us to provide our children the best possible opportunity to reach their full potential.” “By partnering with wonderful teachers whose passion is to enrich the lives of their students, the Suffolk Federal Scholars Program helps students gain the critical skills necessary to make them successful for the rest of their lives,” said EverFi Founder and CEO Tom Davidson. “We are striving to create a world with fewer bankruptcies, fewer people defaulting on their student loans, and more people who feel in control of their financial future. Fighting 69th Honored

On the eve of the Memorial Day observances weekend the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations - NECO honored a diverse group of members of the famed Fighting 69th U.S. Army regiment, including those soldiers not native born but who proudly wear the American uniform. Surrounded by military armor, NECO presented a $15,000 check to the Long Island Family Readiness Group that supports the men and women of the Fighting 69th who are deployed on overseas assignments to protect our nation. “NECO has always celebrated the contributions that immigrants have made to our nation. And today many of the members of our armed forces, including several of the Fighting 69th Regiment who join us, are from all over the world. Having been born in foreign lands, they came to America in search of freedom and

opportunity. They came prepared to lay down their lives in the defense of the United States.” said NECO President Helene der Stepanian. “And we thank them for their commitment and dedication.” Beth Delli-Pizzi, the President of the Fighting 69th Family Readiness Group commended NECO, “It is not just those in uniform who are impacted by the repeated deployments of the Fighting 69th to the front lines but it is their families as well. Outgoing Leader Honored

Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory commended Brigadier General Thomas J. Owens II for his tremendous accomplishments and dedicated service to the New York Air National Guard. Owens had led the 106th Rescue Wing, a unit of the New York Air National Guard stationed at Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton, since 2009. He passed the baton in April and was promoted from colonel to brigadier general. He has been named the new assistant adjutant general for air for the New York Air National Guard. The Presiding Officer presented Owens with a proclamation at the Legislature’s May 10 General Meeting in Riverhead. “It is my honor to congratulate Thomas Owens and thank him for his service and leadership in protecting our citizens,” said Presiding Officer

Gregory. “Suffolk County has been lucky to have him as a leader, and I know he will do great things in his new position at the New York Air National Guard’s headquarters.” The 106th Rescue Wing deploys worldwide to provide combat searchand-rescue coverage for U.S. and allied forces. Manned by more than 1,000 military and civilian personnel, the unit assists with disaster relief and other state emergencies at the direction of New York’s governor and has performed numerous rescues of commercial fishermen and recreational boaters. Owens is a graduate of Cornell University, where he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He went on to receive a master’s, and in 1985 received his commission as a distinguished graduate of the Air National Guard Academy of Military Science. A command pilot with more than 3,900 flying

hours, he has commanded at the squadron, group and wing levels. “I am sincerely appreciative to have had a leader of such a high caliber at the 106th Rescue Wing in Westhampton,” said 2nd District Legislator Bridget Fleming. “I wish Brigadier General Thomas J. Owens all of the best in his new role.” Owens’s awards include the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Aerial Achievement Medal, the Joint Meritorious Unit Award, the Meritorious Unit Award, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Valor Device, the Combat Readiness Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Southwest Asia Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal, as well as the Kuwait Liberation Medal from the Government of Kuwait.
