If you are interested in volunteering with MHAW, you can. Volunteer opportunities are available each Saturday at their Chemical Free Garden in Ronkonkoma. The Garden consists of 23 raised beds of organically grown veggies and herbs, as well as berry bushes, grape vines and more. The produce from their Garden provides lunches for the adults in their programs and helps them stock Charlotte’s Table Food Pantry, which offers community members in need fresh and healthy options. They also take donations of birdseed for the many birds that visit this Garden! Interested in becoming a sponsor or vendor? MHAW has an upcoming event, which has sponsorship and vendor opportunities available! This event is their 6th annual Kick Stands Up Event, which will take place on Sunday, July 22nd, at the BMHMC Amphitheater at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Its mission is to establish positive and supportive mentor relationships with a statewide, school-based, unique one-to-one Mentoring Program that aims to reduce the number of students dropping out of school. They leverage the resources of communities, schools and businesses to match youth with volunteer mentors who are screened and trained. As the NYS Mentoring Program wraps up the 2017-2018 school year, they are starting to work on their Fall programs. Jumping into June Another month has come and gone, and here we are, hurtling toward “summer” through the rain and fog of spring. The school year is drawing to a close, vacation plans are in the works, and everyone seems in desperate need of some sort of reprieve from the daily grind. I recently took a vacation day to bookend the Memorial Day weekend, creating a four-day spread of time to decompress and reset. My mission was to fill every moment with something either enjoyable or productive, a noble pursuit if ever there was one, however unrealistic it might be. The trouble with sustaining that type of schedule, even when it revolves around leisure activities, is the inevitable downward spiral into exhaustion. Being productive is hard work. And with that, the many lists of things to accomplish, some

carried over from just prior to the new year, remain. Sure, a few items have made their way into the “done” column; but mostly, the main bullet points stare back from the page, some expanded upon and added to as the months have progressed. The fact is, there is always more work to be done, always some aspect of life to improve upon, an avenue of growth to explore. Summer, for all its heat and humidity, has always been the season for such exploration to me, in the most literal of senses. From long walks into the uninhabited neighborhoods of Fire Island, to stumbling upon tiny treasures of sand and foliage along the shores that we call home, searching for that perfect photo op, that moment of tranquility when nature takes over and responsibilities vanish into the haze. The key, of course, is to take a piece - however small a slice - of that feeling, that

incomparable moment of zen, and carry it with you into the other elements of life. Find the beauty in everything, as they say. A flower, a butterfly, a sunrise, the ocean crashing along the shore… Perhaps we should dispense with our lists altogether. Who says what is written is more important than what is not? Maybe those “tasks” we have yet to document are the most crucial of all. It might just follow that all these selfimposed responsibilities do not hold nearly the significance we place on them. Those who appear to embody the greatest inner peace seem to glide through life without a care in the world - and what’s wrong with that? And so, we begin yet another month, a bit older and hopefully wiser as we set sail into summer. May the warmth of the sun radiate upon you. Eventually. Maybe by July.

The Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW) is a non-profit behavioral healthcare organization here on Long Island. They serve more than 3,000 clients each year among 33 diverse communities throughout Suffolk County at four sites. Two of these sites are based in Ronkonkoma, one is based in Riverhead and the last is based in Yaphank. This Association was formed in 2014 with the merger of three successful organizations in Suffolk County. Those organizations are the Mental Health Association in Suffolk County, Clubhouse of Suffolk and Suffolk County United Veterans. The Association for Mental Health and Wellness works vigorously to provide a comprehensive range of personcentered recovery and wellness-driven programming for adults who are affected by psychiatric disabilities, trauma and complex health conditions. They run the following programs and services: The NYS-Funded Personalized RecoveryOriented Services, Health Home Care Management Services for Children and Adults, Peer Recovery Oriented Services, Supported Housing for Those Diagnosed with a Mental Illness, Mental Health Helpline, Community Health Education, Support Groups and Behavioral Health Home and Community Based Services. They also operate an organic garden and multiple food pantries! Wreath Ceremony In honor of Board of Education member Philip Reany, Longwood Junior High School students recently participated in the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. Mr. Reany, who served nearly a decade on the Longwood Board of Education, passed away in October 2017. After graduating from Longwood in 1965, Mr. Reany attended Defiance College on an

athletic scholarship. He joined the Army and served during the Vietnam War, and returned to Longwood High School and taught English, reading, and history until he retired after 36 years of service to the District. The four students, Abigail Horn, Gianna Kelly, Laura Alt, Chloe Bloom, were chosen to participate in the Changing of the Guards at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier based on an essay about their

educational expectations for the trip. More than 330 eighthgrade students and 32 chaperones attended the three-day educational trip to Washington. D.C. Along with their visit to the Arlington National Cemetery, the students also toured the Smithsonian and Holocaust museum, the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, and other wellknown monuments and memorials.

Autism Awareness Students and staff showcased their support for a worthy cause during Sachem Central School District’s Hiawatha Elementary School’s inaugural Autism Awareness Walk. Throughout the month of April, the students celebrated autism awareness by participating

in multiple interactive activities during the week leading up to the walk. Students decorated puzzle pieces, wore blue on Thursday and listened to daily facts about autism on the morning announcements each day. A sea of students dressed in blue circled the building in a show of collective

support. Each class held a banner that was decorated with puzzle pieces and words of encouragement. Moving forward, Hiawatha Elementary plans to make the walk a tradition that continues to raise awareness for the cause.

Heritage Museum Day

Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted its second annual “Heritage Museum Day,” inviting students’ family members and Connetquot High School students to the school in an effort to promote a widespread cultural understanding and respect for the many customs celebrated throughout the world. Throughout the halls of

the school, each classroom featured a learning environment where Connetquot High School volunteers were able to shed light onto the different customs of the countries represented and engaged the younger students in a variety of activities. Such presentations included activity stations where students could create Dominican carnival masks, a photo booth which was

designed to mimic the culture and clothing of India, and a demonstration of an authentic Native American Pow Wow. Additionally, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a cultural museum, where multiple displays were set up with factual information about countries around the world, including but Longwood High School not limited to Colombia, is proud to announce Poland, France and India. Matthew Gries and Alyssa Arbuiso as the Class of 2018 Valedictorian and Salutatorian, respectively. Finishing at the top of his class, Matthew will study Computer Science at Northeastern University. He is a vital member of the Robotics team, Quiz Bowl, Science Olympiads, and has earned the American Chemical Society Award and the American Association of Physics Teachers Award. Matthew was named a commended student for the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Alyssa is receiving her Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation with honors in mastery in math and science. She has earned numerous Exceptional Academic Achievement Awards, the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award, New York State Senate Youth Leadership Certificate, and the National Merit Scholarship. A talented student-actor, Alyssa has been cast in numerous leading roles in musicals and plays and earned a Teeny Award for her role in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This past

fall, she was designated Newsday’s Long Island Scholar Artist for Musical Theater. Alyssa will attend The University of Notre Dame as Biochemistry major in the Glynn Family Honors program. “Both Matthew and Alyssa have earned top honors in their class through their outstanding commitment to academic excellence,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R. Lonergan. “They serve as excellent role models and leaders for their peers. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments and wish them well in their future endeavors.”

Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Michael Loguercio announced today that Brookhaven Town’s Division of Veterans Services will be holding a food drive for veterans in need from Monday, June 11th through Friday, June 29th. Last year’s food drive provided more than 300 bags of food to veterans and their families, and was so successful that the Town decided to make it an annual drive. The Division of Veterans Service will once again work with local Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) representatives to distribute the donations directly to veterans and their families. Education Event NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum recently partnered with National Grid to host a Memorial Day education event for 100 local students from Roosevelt Middle School at the Veterans Memorial located on the plaza of NYCB LIVE. Seeds of Recycling Earth-conscious concepts sprouted from several recent science lessons in Gwendolyn Levesque’s first-grade class at Lynwood Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District. Ms. Levesque’s class explored a number of earth science topics aimed at the conservation and revitalization of the planet’s resources. In an activity focused on recycling, students studied different ways that items could be repurposed. Students watched a video showing how used car

tires are repurposed as an alternative material for roads. Mirroring this process, students crushed Cheerios into fine crumbs that were then added to plaster of Paris to create their own miniature roadways. During an additional activity, students crafted cups out of newspaper that they used to plant sunflower seeds. The lesson taught students about recycling by using the old newspaper for an alternative purpose. Through the lesson, students were introduced to the concept of

biodegradability – they learned that the newspaper would break down over time and allow the roots to grow freely in the soil. Continuing the lesson on plants, Levesque’s class studied the many different types of plants, the various parts of a plant and the process of photosynthesis. Concluding the activity, students carefully planted flower seeds inside of a cup and watered them. Just in time for Earth Day, the student activities coincided with the class unit on life science.

Wounded Warriors Visit

Military veterans representing the Wounded Warriors Amputee Softball Team recently visited with staff and students at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School to talk about the honor that comes with serving the country, along with their schedule of upcoming games.

The Wounded Warriors in attendance each lost their limbs while serving in either the Marines or U.S. Army, taking part in the Afghan and Iraq campaigns. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Team is to inspire and educate others while promoting

the health and welfare of other wounded veterans. In honor of their visit, the Sycamore students prepared flags, banners and wrote letters of thanks and respect, which were presented to the veterans during the visit.

Historical Figures In an effort to bring history to life, the fourth-grade students of Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School recently participated in the school’s annual Writing Celebration Wax Museum.

The young historians first researched a wellknown historic figure, then created an informative display board and prepared an appropriate costume to display for invited guests, staff members and fellow students.

The individuals that students chose to portray included famous professional athletes, America’s Founding Fathers, well-known inventors and civil rights leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.

Importance of Screening Connetquot High School students enrolled in Alaina Bennett’s health classes were recently paid a visit by Donna Cioffi and Linda Bonnano of the “Got Checked” organization, as they spoke to the students about breast cancer awareness and the proper screening techniques beneficial toward saving

lives. Both Mrs. Cioffi and Mrs. Bonnano are breast cancer survivors and co-founders of the organization formed in 2015 geared toward spreading the word that early detection can save lives. Through the use of music, videos, fitness and school assemblies, they encourage students

to converse amongst their friends and family members to be aware of any sudden changes they might notice in their bodies. Students were asked to sign a pledge in an effort to pass the word along, and to get into the habit of selfexamination.

Suffolk County teenagers will once again have an opportunity to be recognized for their community service and personal accomplishments with the return of Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory’s Distinguished Youth Award program. Created in 2017, the program focuses on youth ages 13 to 18 who are taking the initiative to explore their communities as well as develop their abilities. The program invites participants to set and work toward goals in at least two of four areas: Volunteer Service, which includes volunteering time to benefit members of the community; Personal Development, which includes assessing one’s own skills and setting goals for personal improvement; Exploration of Suffolk County, which involves visiting 15 of Suffolk County’s parks; and

Physical Fitness, designed to increase participants’ level of physical activity to promote physical and mental well-being. Legislator Tom Muratore’s Memorial Day weekend was a busy one, attending several veterans’ parades and memorial ceremonies in the Fourth Legislative District. Knowing that students need the skills to be prepared for the future in a technology-driven world, Edna Louise Spear Elementary School librarian Selinda Stout set out on a mission to introduce all K-5 students to block coding in the school library. For her efforts, she has been named a Sunburst Digital Innovator. Stout wrote a case study for the educational curriculum software company on the implementation of the Dot and Dash robots in the school library. She first discussed with her students many different types of

robots. Her next step was a collaborative project with music teacher Lisa Scrom, where students wrote their own compositions and then used iPads to program the robots in the library to perform their original songs. Her culminating project was a March Madness Basketball Challenge. Using coding concepts the students learned, they investigated how distance and energy affected the launchers’ aim and competed against one another where the robots actually shot hoops. She also created surveys for the students to share their experience with

these powerful and playful tools that served as an introduction to computer science. “We are so proud of Ms. Stout for the work she has accomplished with robotics and coding for our elementary students,” said Jessica Schmettan, the district’s assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “These type of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) opportunities help our students develop critical 21st-century skills which directly align with the district’s digital literacy goals.”

Artists Showcase Talents Rocky Point High School students senior Jenna Salzan and junior Heather Kuhn recently participated in the nationwide Congressional Art contest.

This contest is presented by congressmen from each district and places student work on display at the Artspace, a gallery in Patchogue Village.

Winners of the competition have their artwork sent to the Capitol building, where the work will be on view for one year.

Historical Marker to be Unveiled A historical marker honoring the publisher of Long Island's first newspaper will be unveiled in Sag Harbor on June 6th. The marker will commemorate David Frothingham, who published Frothingham’s Long-Island Herald from 1791 to 1796. The marker on Main Street is sponsored by the Press Club of Long Island, which collaborated with the Sag Harbor Historical Society on the project. The marker is being installed by the Village of Sag Harbor. The dedication ceremony will be held across the street from the historical society office at 174 Main Street at 1 p.m. The marker is being installed in front of the property where Frothingham published the weekly newspaper. Chris R. Vaccaro, president of the press club, the local chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, said, "Over the last few years the press club has worked hard

to recognize places of historical significance in journalism on Long Island. This is yet another example of our board aiming to educate the public on local history. Thank you to the Sag Harbor Historical Society for all of their help with the project." Jack Youngs, president of the historical society, said, “To have the first newspaper that was printed on Long Island is what many locals proudly say is ‘A Feather in Our Cap.’ We had a newspaper eight years before Brooklyn.“ David Frothingham married Nancy Pell, a descendent of the prominent Pell family of Westchester. Several years later Frothingham became entangled in a claim of slander by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. The claim under the terms of the Alien and Sedition Acts stemmed from an article published in a Brooklyn newspaper, the Argus. Frothingham was found guilty and a fine of $100 was imposed,

which a friend of his from Bridgehampton paid. A bond of $2,500 was set by the court to make sure he would never publish anything that could be considered libelous in the future. His inability to pay the bond resulted in him becoming a seaman to earn the money. No one knows the real story of his demise, but it is thought that he took ill off the coast of Africa and died. He was survived by his wife Nancy and daughter, Fanny, who would become Jack Youngs’ great-great grandmother. In the last three years, PCLI has has arranged the installation of historical markers in Huntington, where Walt Whitman founded The LongIslander; in Hempstead, where Newsday was first published, and Roslyn Harbor, where William Cullen Bryant, the poet and editor of the New York Post lived. Showing Support In celebration of Autism Awareness month, students and staff from Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District joined together to raise awareness and funds for a special cause. Throughout the building, students and staff dressed in autism awareness shirts and

bracelets that were sold to raise money for the Spectrum of Dreams Foundation. Additionally, students decorated countless creative puzzle pieces that lined the hallways of the building. During the month, students learned about the autism spectrum as they watched various videos and listened to announcements

each day in which a number of prominent role models with autism were highlighted for their outstanding achievements. As a culmination to the monthlong initiative, the school presented a $1,025 check to the Spectrum of Dreams Foundation President Tim Szlosek.

Mermaid Parade Set

Join for the 36th Annual Mermaid Parade, Saturday June 16th. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st and Surf Avenue and proceeds on Surf Avenue to West 10th, then heads south to the Boardwalk and then west back to its ending point at Steeplechase Plaza on the Boardwalk. The Mermaid Parade is a unique and artistic celebration of ancient mythology and the honkytonk seaside ritual that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors to the amusement district. The parade features marching bands, drill teams, floats, antique cars and some 1,500 participants dressed in hand-made costume of mermaids, sea creatures, amusement rides and Neptunes. It is the largest art parade in the nation and the largest event of the year in Coney Island.

The o-fish-al beer of the Parade will be flowing all day. Mermaid Pilsner will be available straight from the source at Coney Island Brewery, and at bars and restaurants throughout the Coney Island neighborhood! “We are very excited to have Amanda Palmer & Neil Gaiman lead the parade, as this years Queen Mermaid & King Neptune” Parade and Coney Island USA Founder Dick Zigun said. “And, we are thrilled to have our good friends at the Coney Island Brewery as presenter and Kitchen 21 as our co-presenter.” According to tradition, Queen Mermaid and King Neptune will be wheeled through the parade in an antique wicker Boardwalk Rolling Chair that dates back to 1923. The Middle Country Public Library celebrates literacy and learning with The Zine Project, its Summer Learning Program for teens! MCPL is one of twenty libraries nationwide selected to receive the YALSA 2018 Summer Learning Resources Grant, which provides resources to build literacy skills. Summer Learning Programs are important for youth to participate in because it helps to mitigate the “summer slide,” which is when students lose literacy skills over the summer when their minds are not being stimulated educationally. Through its Summer Learning Program, the Middle Country Public Library hopes to instill, as well as foster positive learning habits and longterm literacy skills among youth. As part of this initiative, teens entering grades 7-12 are invited to participate in The Zine Project, an opportunity to socialize

in a fun, café-style setting with friends and be part of a collaborative art experience. Draw, write and collage about your favorite topic or interest and become the author of your very own zine, a magazine “with a twist!” Learn about comic drawing, layout, design, binding and much more! Showcase your zine creations at a reception for friends and family during the last session. A special teen “zine” collection will be developed in the Underground teen space at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach. The Zine Project will be held on Tuesdays, June 26th, July 10th, 17th, 24th and Thursday, July 19th at MCPL in Centereach from 6-8 p.m. Teens in grades 6-12 are also encouraged to register for Songs to Start a Fire, a songwriting workshop (Aug. 1, 8 and 15) and Comic Book Camp, a comic book design workshop (August 7th10th) to get those creative juices flowing!

Space Station Lectures Montauk Observatory (MO) is honored to host retired Marine Colonel and NASA Astronaut Randy Bresnik to present two free lectures at the John Drew Theater at Guild Hall, June 27th and June 29th. Col. Bresnik will share highlights from his recent long duration mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS.) Audiences also will have the unique opportunity to hear from an astronaut’s spouse who is distinguished in her own right. Rebecca Bresnik Esq. serves as Associate Chief Counsel for International Matters at NASA's Johnson Space Center and is the

lead attorney for the ISS; she will co-present with her husband. Col. Bresnik returned from his most recent mission in December, 2017, where he served as the Commander of the International Space Station for Expedition 53 and flight engineer for Expedition 52. Expedition 52/53 was completed in 139 days, making 2,224 orbits of the Earth and traveling 58,835,163 miles. "The Bresniks are both remarkable people,” said Terry Bienstock, President of Montauk Observatory. “Their personal stories and their accomplishments are inspiring. We are

Administration on Aging, an agency of the U.S. Administration for Community Living is a nationwide service that connects older adults and their caregivers

with information on aging services. Callers to the Eldercare Locator receive information about federal, state and local services such as

transportation, in-home supportive services, and health and wellness programs. Information Specialists are there to help guide callers to the correct resources.
