As the COVID-19 pandemic drags on, hospital staff across the island continues to push forward as the heroes they are. In response, Mather Hospital of Northwell Health & Platinum Catering has donated a plentiful food donation to honor and thank their Mather Hospital Residents. Spearheading the food donation effort, Dr. Schwartzberg of Mather Hospital, Colon and Rectal Surgery, Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Surgery who also volunteers at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation knew this was something he wanted to do to give back to his community. “They are a group of kind, giving and caring individuals who go above.” Dr. David Schwartzberg sits on the CMAC and Executive Council of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island Chapter and helps raise awareness for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Dr. Schwartzberg is also the Team Captain for the TAKE STEPS + VIRTUAL event - the Foundation’s largest virtual fundraising event where patients, caregivers, and corporate and healthcare partners empower and inspire one another. Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

The horses being supported by this food pantry, provide labor to

farms, equine therapy for trauma, help drive the regional economy and so much more. Another Hay For “Horses Mobile Food Pantry” drive will be planned as soon as Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue can reach a funding goal of $10,000. The organization is applying for grants in hopes to support more of the equine industry on Long Island. Whether your favorite form of outdoor recreation includes sitting on the patio reading or digging in the garden, there’s a good chance that you will be sharing the space with local wildlife. Optimizing opportunities to view and interact with backyard wildlife can make the great outdoors even more enjoyable. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology indicates that there are around 2,059 bird species on the continent of North America. Red-winged blackbirds, yellowrumped warblers, American robins, and chipping sparrows are among the most commonly seen birds in North America. Making a backyard hospitable to birds can increase the chances for sightings and hearing their sweet songs. Installing a bird bath can be a step in the right direction. Bird baths can make yards more attractive to birds. Birds

require a supply of fresh, clean water for drinking and bathing. By setting up a bath, homeowners can attract not only seed-loving birds, but those that don’t eat seeds and wouldn’t normally congregate around feeders, indicates All About Birds. Experts surmise that birds may bathe to maintain their feathers. Not all bird baths are constructed in the same fashion. Many bird baths sold in stores are better suited for decoration than for serving as functional baths. There are four general types of bird baths: standing pedestal, hanging bath, deck-mounted, and ground-level. In general, the lower a bird bath is to the ground, the more likely birds are to use it. Most natural sources of water birds use are on or near the ground. Therefore, groundlevel bird baths may be the best investments. Rough stone or a bird bath modified with pea gravel or rocks can give birds steady footing. Place the bird bath in the shade if possible to ensure the water is cool and fresh. Locate it by a tree so the birds can hop up to a branch and preen afterwards. All About Birds also says that a bird bath is more attractive if it has a dripping or moving water feature, as this is often irresistible to birds. Another way to ensure the bath will be used, is to keep it clean and maintained. Change the water every day or two. Rinse off the bath to remove droppings, bugs and other debris. Once birds learn there is a comfortable bath nearby, they may be more apt to visit a yard and may even become frequent guests.

As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, however her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Students Cheer For Lucky Ducks From A Distance A first grade study of ducks in Donna Gianfortone’s class at Chippewa Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District didn’t slow down following the state-mandated school closures related to the

COVID-19 pandemic, thanks to an Instagram account she started allowing her class to track the ducks’ progress. The Instagram account, Lucky Ducks of Chippewa, showcases the ducks’ journey beginning as

eggs in an incubator and concluding with their trip to their new homes. Students submitted names for the ducks while they were being cared for by Gianfortone, and a video shows how the ducks chose their own names.

She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. During these trying times when only essential businesses are operating, Eileen has shifted her focus to helping the homless community, a group she feels extremely passionate for. She has been bringing homeless individuals food, clothes, blankets, shoes, etc. to help them feel loved and cared for. Although she actively helps homless people throughout Long Island, she focuses a lot in East Meadow, a community she finds to have a large homeless population. “I’m one person trying desperately to make a difference,” says Eileen. “The ‘not in my backyard’ mentality needs to be a thing of the past!” Her clients, along with local restaurants have donated food, gently used clothes, blankets, shoes and more for her to distribute. The homeless community needs attention and assistance and together we can give them the help they need. One way we can start is by donating food, clothes, shoes, blankets, socks or any other important items to Eileen for her to distribute. She visits homeless individuals twice a day and any donations received will be handed out to those in need.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips During Lockdown As New Yorkers are beginning to emerge from “New York on Pause,” and looking towards nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their grills for the first time in months. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules and tips to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for some outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President Steven Klein. “We want all residents to stay safe as we emerge from quarantine and heed some basic safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow social distancing rules to keep their families and other families safe for the coming months.”

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills and gas grills were involved in an average of 8,900 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below. Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Keep children and pets at least three feet away from

the grill area. Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill. Never leave your grill unattended. Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it.
