Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was again invited to attend the May 20th Bagels and Books Breakfast at the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was invited by Ms.Cheryl Zimmer, Supreme Court Advisory Board co-chair, to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Children’s Center to provide a safe area for youngsters while their families are involved in court proceedings. For the past 9 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center.

“Thank you to all of our Connetquot teachers, both active and retired for their continued support of our unofficial “adoption” of the Cohalan Children’s Center,” said the CTA President. “For us to be a part of something that enriches the lives of so many children throughout the year, and to be so appreciated by those who administer the program, is very rewarding. The work done by the employees and the volunteers at the Center is vitally important to the children. Finally, it allows families to know their children are in a safe, nurturing, environment for the time that they need to take care of business while at the courts.” The center is open 5 days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Agnes Cento. Last year the Children’s

Center serviced over 1,100 children. Connetquot teachers have also provided hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center earlier in the year. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes. Mr. Felicio added, “As teachers, we go into the profession because we love working with and helping kids. We do that every day within the school house. To be able to have a positive effect on young children outside of the classroom is very gratifying to us.” Felicio has assured the EAC of the continuing support of the Connetquot Teachers Association. On Monday, June 15th, the American Heart Association will be hosting its 27th Annual Golf Classic-A Joel Hamroff Memorial Tribute at the Meadow Brook Club in Jericho. Event Chair Harry Armon, ARCAP Partners, LLC and Event Vice-Chair, Steven Yanofsky, Parts Authority, Inc., along with the corporate and community leadership of Long Island will be participating to increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event will honor Joe Roberto, Senior Executive Vice President, President New York Banking Operations, Bank United N.A. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that in addition to the Golf Classic, a

Tennis Classic has been added to the day’s events. The Tennis Classic will take place at the Crest Hollow County Club in Woodbury. Jill Byrne and Yvonne Evelyn will CoChair the Tennis event and will honor Maureen O’Donnell Hardiman, CLU, CLTU, Financial Advisor, Northwestern Mutual. Much progress has been made in the fight against heart disease and stroke. However, many Americans are still not getting the proper amount of exercise that will effectively combat risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other

modifiable risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/ overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and awards will follow. For Tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults may gain as

The Gift of Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time. It’s the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. There is always a deadline, a constant reminder of what we have yet to accomplish within a given period. From the moment we are born, there is a schedule to follow, a time frame to adhere to, expectations to be met – rarely a moment of peace. From classroom bell schedules and term paper due dates to newspaper and magazine press schedules, my life has pretty much been one giant revolving deadline from kindergarten on

up. And, while generally on time for such things, my reluctance to be a “morning person,” coupled with a (slightly) over-the-top sense of perfectionism, occasionally creates obstacles, self-imposed as they may be. Sometimes, you just need to take a collective deep breath and let things go. Choose your battles wisely; smile and accept the rest. It’s not giving up. It’s not even giving in. It’s simply making a conscious decision to rise above with an eye on the greater goal, whatever that may be. It’s not always easy. And

for those like me who tend to micromanage and overanalyze, it can be nearly impossible to let go and relinquish control of the day-today monotonies which, together, make up the great majority of life. But once you set the wheels in motion, it’s amazing how truly freeing it is. Simply live and let live. We can only control ourselves; not others, not our surroundings. The sooner we realize this and stop trying, the better. At the end of the day, you might even find you have more time to do the things you truly want to. Imagine that.

Two Longwood Middle School students won first place in the Long Island Family and Consumer Science (LIFACS) Professionals’ islandwide 2015 Challenge Competition. Sa’mya Neely and Justin Montilla competed in the “Sew To Serve” category, which promotes community volunteering. The two designed and created backpacks made

out of donated and leftover fabrics, to be used by students in the federal free and reduced lunch program who are benefiting from a local food program that provides them with nutritious food to be taken home every Friday. over the village’s Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies, including the special memorial ceremony commemorating the 10th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 attacks. Mayor Dorman, who served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, established the post to give local veterans a place to meet and to thank veterans for their bravery and service. The post is located inside the Village of Islandia Commons on 1250 Old

The first meeting will be held on May 30th at 10 a.m. The mayor joined village board members and local elected officials to recognize the local war veterans in attendance and to remember those who gave their lives for our country. The veterans placed ceremonial wreaths at the site of the memorial to honor the fallen soldiers. Members of the Lakeland, Hauppauge, Central Islip, and West Islip Fire Departments were also in attendance.

travels to Bosnia with Camp New Hope and the Friendship Camp, building relationships and exploring peace and reconciliation. When the students at ICC learned how the war affected the children, they really wanted to participate and show they cared.” Twenty years later, Bosnia still bears the wounds of war. “The students felt like they were making a difference by sending messages of hope, love, and peace to children in a war-torn country,” said Konnerth.

Midura Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #12144 during the village’s annual Memorial Day ceremony. The post was named in honor of the late Col. Owens and Josephine Bailey for their hard work, dedication, and leadership to the youth of the Gordon Heights Community. The Culinary Program was coordinated by the 6th Precinct, Executive Chef Richards, and members of the Gordon Heights community at the Saint Michael’s Community Center in August of 2014

as an alternative to gangs and negative behavior. Classes began with only three children but within a month the class size expanded to more than 35 children each week. The program has now become a fun event to look forward to by children ages 10 and older throughout the community.

On May 22nd, Councilman Kevin LaValle met with students and teachers from Centereach High School to congratulate them on being awarded a grant of $1784.28 from Recyclebank toward their sustainable project called Littermates. Lead by educator Natalie Fitterman, the program is one that encourages recycling in the school and community while earning funds to help reduce the unwanted animal population in Brookhaven. Councilman LaValle said,

“I commend Centereach High School for making a commitment to protect the environment by recycling and for helping control the cat and dog population as well. I am always impressed by how well youngsters can join together for a cause if they put their minds to it.” This Service Learning program, while increasing sustainability in Brookhaven, will be sustainable itself as it is designed to be carried on year after year. It will focus on how to create a culture of conservation,

educate the students and community on the benefits of recycling, and will build partnerships with the local community for a healthier and safer environment and school. The bottles and cans collected in the recycling program will be turned in for deposit redemption and that money will be used to get homeless animals spayed/neutered. Littermates will prepare students to understand and act on current and future environmental challenges.

He is a National Merit Commended Scholar and an AP Scholar with Distinction. Following his passion for engineering, Sean participated in the science research program at Brookhaven National Labs where he created computer programs to analyze the modulation of dark matter. The Long Island Game Farm will kick off its summer season beginning on Saturday, May 23rd. At the largest combined Children’s Zoo and Wildlife Park on Long Island, guests can see hundreds of animals and get up close and personal with some of their favorite exotic critters. The Game Farm will be open seven days a week during the summer, allowing families more time to learn about the

wildlife and experience the fun. Summer highlights include the return of David Rosaire’s One and Only Pekingese Dog Show, the Leapin’ Lemur Tour, and the all-new Camel Encounter. Guests can experience a personal encounter with the Long Island Game Farm’s very own camels, Sandy and Sahara. During this encounter, guests can feed the camels a healthy snack

and take photos with them. The Animal Education staff will be there to answer any questions and to share interesting facts about these “ships of the desert.” Tickets can be purchased from the souvenir stand for $5.
