CONNETQUOT GIRLS’ VARSITY SOFTBALL DEFEATS HALF HOLLOW HILLS-EAST - The Connetquot varsity girls’ softball team improved its record to 4-3 with an exciting 12-10 win over visiting Half Hollow Hills-East. Julianna Levanti had three hits, two RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the T-birds. Cailin Hall had three hits, scored three runs and stole two bases. Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship

The Charity of the Month for June is
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm www.hobbsfarm.info
Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a nonprofit organization with a rich history. You may know and love their farm, or you may never believe there is an 11-acre farm in Centereach that has been feeding Long Islanders for decades! The James Hobbs family came to Long Island from Georgia in 1906 and grew farm produce in New Village (North Centereach) for local Long Islanders for 3 generations, first as farm workers and later purchasing the land, which became known as Hobbs Farm. James’ son, Alfred Hobbs took ownership in 1955 and farmed his own property, as well as rental farmland in the surrounding area for many years. He passed up many opportunities to sell the property, hoping that it would always remain a farm. Thankfully, it does remain a farm to this day. Hobbs Farm is the last farm in Centereach, as well as the last AfricanAmerican family farm on Long Island. When Mr. Hobbs passed away in 1996, he left the farm property to the Bethel AME Church in Setauket, where he was a member. The farm was renamed Bethel Hobbs Community Farm. However, the church struggled with local community organizations that were threatening to buyout the land for other means. In 2007, “Friends of Hobbs Farm” was formed, which led to the restoration process of the farm. Today, the church still owns the farm, a non-profit organization that is entirely operated by volunteers. The farm is 11 acres and it grows and harvests an average of over 30,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to several local food pantries and soup kitchens on the island. They also offer CSA Memberships, which allows locals to receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown on their farm right in Centereach. The produced is packed the same day as they go out for delivery, and recipiants can rest knowing exactly where they were grown. Additionally, the farm offers educational programs, community events and they have a seasonal farm stand. With a strong faith-based history and being that it is still owned by a local church, you will notice a strong Christian presence as soon as you walk onto their land. Faith based signs, a large wooden cross and a welcoming peaceful environment truly
makes this farm special. Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has 6 distinct areas: The Memorial Garden: The Memorial Garden is at the front tip of their property. It is a quiet, shaded area with flowers, beautiful greenery and a peaceful waterfall to remember people who have passed on. The Education Garden: The Education Garden area grows many heirloom varieties, has a small compost area and hosts educational events for small groups. The Greenhouse: The Greenhouse allows this farm to extend their season during the colder months. The Community Garden: The Community Garden hosts Brookhaven Community garden plots. The Garden of Ephraim: The Garden of Ephraim is a wheelchair accessible garden, which consists of a beautiful paved area with raised beds! There is also street access directly into The Garden of Ephraim. Food Pantry Donation Area: This area of the farm consists of several acres of farm land and is the main growing area. The selfless efforts of all the volunteers that work hard to keep this farm afloat is truly a blessing. They don’t get paid a dime, but they love what they do. To me, this farm shines bright as a symbol of hope and resilience. However, it needs some more help itself. Options for Community Living, Inc., a Long Island based not-forprofit organization, received a grant award of $15,000 from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Funds support affordable supportive housing programs in Nassau and Suffolk County. “Everyone needs safe, stable housing,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options’ CEO. “Some conditions make it difficult for people to maintain a stable home without help. Supportive housing combines affordable housing with intensive coordinated services to provide that assistance.” Last year, Options’ supportive housing for formerly homeless people with disabilities and chronic health conditions provided housing for over 200 Long Islanders. Connetquot Central School District Sports Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Team Bounces Back

Connetquot High School girls’ varsity lacrosse coach Sal Piscitelli spoke to his players after their recent 5-4 loss to William Floyd HS. The message was pretty straight forward: “… you are better than this.” The T-birds had won their first three games, but didn’t have the same precision and teamwork in their losing effort. The message clearly reached his players as they devoured Longwood at home two days later, by a score of 16-2. The satisfaction of playing to their potential against the visitors was enhanced by
the fact that it was Senior Night, recognizing the achievements of the team’s graduating seniors. The T-birds took a 9-1 lead into the half-time break, and scored 7 more goals in the second period. Outstanding offensive performances were led by Gabriella Carere (3 goals), Morgan Elliott (3), Anna Thornton (3) Erin McLoughlin (2) and one goal each from Anabella Cenci, Brooke Elizalde, Dylann Grable, Isabella Montouri and Reagan Silhan. Hannorah Ragus had 3 saves and Ella Deliso had one more to keep
Longwood from scoring. The T-birds are now 4-1 in Suffolk league play. Congratulations to the following graduating student-athletes, and thank you for your dedication to the girls’ lacrosse program and the Connetquot community: Grace Wichelens, Morgan Elliott, Jerica Rivera, Erin McLoughlin, Katelynn Marx, Daniella Bendetto, Holly Schack, Gabriella Carere, Anna Thornton, Emily Morris, Katherine Cuozzo and Katelynn Engeldrum.
Baseball Team Wins Home Opener 4-0 Connetquot high school baseball coach Rob Burger and his T-birds won their home opener on May 13th against visiting Lindenhurst by a score of 4-0. Senior, Sean Mileti earned a complete game win, striking out 11.
Nick Ricci and Ryan Kiendle each had one hit and two RBI’s for the T-birds. Connetquot remains undefeated, boasting a 4-0 record. The opening pitch for the team’s first home game was tossed by Liam Flaherty.
Seniors Sean Mileti and James Goff were recognized for their selection by NEWSDAY as among the TOP 100 baseball players in Nassau-Suffolk Counties.

Local Non-Profit Is In Need Of Foster Homes For Cats! Alleykattz is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that operates on volunteers alone. The organization was formed in 2016 by Sonnia Cepeda. They service all of Long Island, New York City Metro and the surrounding areas. Their mission of rescuing abandoned and homeless cats, as well as cats in danger of abuse and neglect. Alleykatz has a strict
adoption policy to ensure cats and kittens get the best homes. Adoption application and a home visit are required before placement of a cat into a home. They believe that there is a good home for every cat they rescue and even though it might take a little longer for some to find their “furever” home, it is worth the wait if they end up in a happy home that suits them. Every cat is in foster care until the
right home is found and Alleykattz is currently in need of foster homes (preferably close to Long Island). We are dedicated to support, education, and communication for thyroid cancer survivors, their families and friends. We
also sponsor Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, yearround awareness activities, and thyroid cancer research fundraising and research grants. At meetings people share thyroid cancer information, their experiences, and insights on how they are coping with thyroid cancer. The support group is free and open to any and all survivors and their families and friends.
Diploma Display Ideas Graduation day is one of the proudest moments in students’ academic careers. Diplomas are symbolic of hours spent honing skills and working on assignments and, ultimately, success in the classroom. High school diplomas represent an opportunity to go on to higher learning or a trade, while college degrees indicate young people are ready to begin their professional lives. Many graduates are excited about the prospect of receiving their diplomas. Once in hand, the document can be put on display. The following are some unique ways to showcase diplomas at home or at work. Framing One of the classic ways to display a diploma is in a frame. Many businesses offer customized framing where the frame material
and the matting can be chosen. Some grads may want to include a photograph of the school or a picture of the graduate above the diploma. Graduates also may want to select a frame and mat that coordinates with school colors. Create a shadow box Consider displaying the diploma with other mementos from school. A shadow box is a large, deep display frame that can house items that are thicker than photographs or papers. Items such as a graduation tassel, medal or other award, a varsity jacket patch, or a program from a school performance or awards ceremony can be placed in the shadow box. Create a photo wall Display the diploma among other framed photos from school activities. This can elicit a trip down memory lane every
time the wall is viewed. Some families may want to display their diplomas together, especially if multiple family members attended the same school. Make a work of art Various online art vendors can turn the diploma into different works of art. For example, engravers can laser engrave the diploma onto a wooden plaque. Then the diploma can be displayed in one location and the wood plaque in another. Place it under glass Display the diploma beneath the glass top of a coffee table. Merrimac Students And Staff Rally Support For ALS Ride For Life An important cause energized students and staff at Merrimac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District as they recently participated in a monthlong initiative to raise money and awareness for ALS and the ALS Ride for Life, founded by Chris Pendergast.
In honor of Pendergast, who sadly passed away in October 2020, students and staff at Merrimac created a plan to recreate his famous annual feat of traveling from Montauk to Yankee Stadium to raise awareness for the disease. Throughout the month, during physical education class, the
school ran or walked their desired distance which collectively added to the distance traveled during Pendergast’s ride. In addition to the school’s distance goal, the building also met its monetary goal of raising $1,200 through donations for the ALS Ride for Life.

Seneca Students Celebrate Diversity Students at Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently participated in a cultural diversity week to help celebrate diversity and embrace cultures from around the world. The event, facilitated by Seneca Middle School’s foreign language teachers Brooke Failey-Ramirez, Lorie Fernandez, Grace Markowitz, Virginia Meric
and Diamela PegueroCollazo and prevention counselor Stephanie Garcia, encompassed socially distanced dance workshops, an international lunch menu and student speakers sharing the daily announcements in their native languages, such as Greek, Gujarati, Italian, Turkish and Vietnamese. Seventh and eighth grade students learned
dances from around the world, including Italy’s tarantella, Cuba’s cha cha, Dominican Republic’s bachata, Ireland’s step dance and Colombia’s cumbia. The interactive experience served as a great way for the students to express themselves and learn about the immense diversity found around the world.
Need Mortgage Relief Due to COVID-19? Here’s What to Know (StatePoint) As the pandemic continues to affect Americans across the country, many are facing financial hardship. For homeowners with a Freddie Mac loan, COVID-19 mortgage assistance is available in the form of “forbearance,” which temporarily suspends or reduces your mortgage payment without penalty so you can get back on your feet. Here is how forbearance works and what happens when it ends: How do I request forbearance? To request forbearance, you must contact your loan servicer (the company listed on your mortgage statement) who will help you understand your options. Forbearance is available for up to a year, though servicers will typically start you on a shorter forbearance plan and reassess to see if your financial situation has changed. What happens when forbearance ends? It’s important to remember mortgage forbearance is not the same as mortgage forgiveness and you will have to repay your missed payments. About 30 days before the forbearance plan is scheduled to end, you and your servicer will determine next steps. This could include additional forbearance or
a workout option to make up the missed payments. Just remember, you are never required to pay back missed payments in a lump sum if your loan is owned by Freddie Mac. How does repayment work? Even though you must pay back payments that were missed during forbearance, you have several options for doing so. Additionally, you won’t accrue additional fees, penalties or interest beyond the amounts already scheduled or calculated based on the terms of your mortgage. For example, let’s say you enter into a forbearance agreement of three months. If your monthly mortgage payment is $1,000, you will owe about $3,000 in missed mortgage payments at the end of your forbearance term. Your servicer can help you determine the workout option that works best for you, including: • Full repayment, where you pay back the missed payments all at once. • Repayment plans, which allow you to catch up gradually while you are paying your regular monthly payment. • Payment deferral, which allows you to resume making your normal monthly payment. Your servicer can work with you to leverage alternative ways for you to pay back
the missed payments from your forbearance period at a later date and in a manner that is affordable. • Modification of the loan, which changes the terms of your loan, usually to reduce your original monthly payment amount. Your servicer can help with a modification that might suit your new circumstances. Additional Information: To stay on track with paying down your loan balance and less interest over the life of the loan, it’s important that you resume your payments as soon as you’re financially able. Keep in mind that while you’re not charged “extra” interest, you won’t be paying down your principal, and the interest will continue to accrue on your unpaid mortgage balance. However, what was once a relic of the past has now become an innovation in entertainment, the drive-in movie theater. The drive-in movie theater is nearly as old as the automobile itself. While today, there are about 300 drive-in theaters across the country, many more are popping up wherever there is space. Indeed, Walmart recently announced more than 160 of its parking lots will be converted into drive-in movie theaters around the country and many small businesses are doing the same. “A drive-in movie is the
ideal event for anyone with a car because they can get out for a drive to enjoy a common experience with friends and family while taking appropriate social distancing precautions,” says Rah Mahtani, marketing communications manager for MINI USA. To shed light on this rediscovered institution of cinema, MINI USA created a guide for drivers to help them make the most of the experience. Here are five of their top tips: 1. Arrive early. Many theaters allow guests to arrive up to an hour before the show begins. Take advantage of this time to pick the best parking spot and stretch your legs. If the snack bar is open, grab a treat! 2. Watching these clips provided the ninth graders with much “food for thought” and sparked interesting conversations amongst them. Through the use of social media, Castaldo was able to contact John Quinones, the show’s host, who happily agreed to engage in a virtual conversation
with the ninth graders via Google Meet. Gathered in the school’s library media center, the students took turns asking Quinones questions about his experiences filming the show, which he answered with great detail and passion. While they were excited by the opportunity to speak with a celebrity, more importantly, the students were impacted by Quinones’ fundamental message: people need to look out for one another.

Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal
burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches flames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated appliances. WebMD
advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants
or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the affected area with
cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to
the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
