Cartright stopped by the Terryville Road Elementary School to thank the Terryville Soccer League Team “Juventus” for picking up trash at the school. We know the Suffolk County government and community are going to put on a fantastic event that will showcase the drive, talents and achievements of runners with an intellectual disability from the US and internationally.’’ Dr. Catherine Caronia, Chair of Pediatrics, and Dr. Sarita Duchatelier, Director of Pediatric Neurology, both at Good Samaritan Hospital,

praised the opportunity for intellectually disabled athletes to fully participate in the event. “We see the strength in children with special needs and to whom the words “I can’t” don’t exist,” Dr. Caronia said. “At Good Samaritan Health and Medical Center we care for many children with chronic needs including those who have chronic illnesses and often are labeled as medically fragile or medically complex. For these children, as is true for all children, the ability to participate and succeed is inspiring. The ability to lose the ‘I can’t’ from their vocabulary and turning into “I can” allows them to reach heights that they or their families otherwise would never have thought

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island (SBPLI) was among those honored at the Fourth Annual Imagine Awards, founded and presented by Cerini & Associates and presented to the region’s top non-profits, on Tuesday, May 3rd, at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, New York. SBPLI was the winner of the Empire National Bank Innovation Award for the organization’s innovative approaches to meet its mission and dedication to offering hands-on opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to Long Island youth. One of the most popular initiatives SBPLI offers is a continuum of competitive robotics programs for children and young adults known as FIRST® (For Inspiration and

Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics. Over 135 non-profits submitted applications to the Fourth Annual Imagine Awards. Applicants hoped to win a $5,000 grant in one of five categories: Innovation, Leadership Excellence, Rising Star, Social Entrepreneurism and Social Impact. Of the many exceptional applicants, only 20 nonprofits were selected as finalists and one in each category was ultimately awarded the grant. A sixth organization was provided a Fan Favorite Award through an open online vote. The Imagine Awards encourage commitment and success in Long Island’s non-profit sector. “We are so excited to be presented with this recognition and honor from Empire National Bank

and Cerini & Associates,” says Joani Madarash, former Executive Director of, SBPLI. “Everyone in this entirely volunteer organization works incredibly hard each year to provide Long Island youth with the ultimate in STEM experiences, and it is wonderful to be acknowledged for our efforts by such prestigious organizations.” This year’s winners included Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island, Best Buddies New York, the COPE Foundation, Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY), Family and Children’s Association and SBPLI. The Saga of Squeegee Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Rebecca from Mineola is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Rebecca is living with Crohn’s diseases which combined with ulcerative colitis, are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. In 2011, as a senior in high school Rebecca started to develop severe abdominal pain in her lower right side. you’re going through.” What she thought would be a quick fix turned into a life changing diagnosis. Within two months of diagnosis, Rebecca dropped down to about 90 pounds; hair was thinning, on TPN, could not eat solid food, and was scheduled for surgery. “CCFA has been an incredible organization from the beginning of my IBD journey,” says Rebecca. “I attend yearly talks about uprising medications and technology in the IBD world and am connected through campus connects.

Since I was diagnosed, my family and friends have supported me in raising funds and have walked proudly with me at the Take Steps walk. I am proud to be the honoree this year for the CCFA and have aspirations to spread awareness and fundraise greater than any other year. I hope the money raised towards research will someday help find a cure for myself and all those suffering with IBD.” The Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis Walk is the nation’s largest event dedicated to finding cures and raising awareness for digestive diseases. Our Take Steps walks offer

Remembered Park in Nesconset. Leslie Kennedy, along with Comptroller John Kennedy, the 911 Responders Remembered Park Board, and the FealGood Foundation gathered to read the new names to be added to The Wall of Heroes. However, they weren’t the only ones to honor these heroes. Jon Stewart, former host of the Daily Show and fervent advocate for 911 responders, read the names of the heroes who are to be added to the wall. To end the ceremony, John and Leslie Kennedy had the privilege of laying the wreath on the Wall of Heroes. “These men and

women selflessly gave their lives to help when our nation needed it most. It is so sad to see people still dying as a result of the efforts they made to save lives that day,” said Leslie Kennedy. “I want to thank all the first responders and their families. These families make the ultimate sacrifice to keep us safe. I also want to thank Jon Stewart for working tirelessly for the benefit of 911 responders, and I thank him for honoring their memory today.” Sixty five names will be added to the Wall of Heroes to commemorate those who have passed on since the last names were added to the Wall.

Living in the shadow of the largest city in America, many can relate to the trials and sorrows brought about by the horrendous attack on our nation on September eleventh 2001. As horrible as that day was, while the rest of the world was fleeing the towers, a few brave men and women were running towards the wreckage to save as many lives as they could. Some of them died that day, but many more are perishing now due to the diseases that they contracted from working in the ruins of the towers. Land” and a “Yellow-Brick road” guests used to travel to poetry performances, author meet-and-greets, various writing workshops led by District teachers and visiting authors. Enlistees Honored

The “Our Community Salutes” Brookhaven Chapter held its second annual High School Enlistee Recognition Ceremony at Sunset Harbour on May 19th. More than 230 people attended to be the first to say thank you to 19 graduating seniors from five Brookhaven Town high schools for the service that they are about to undertake. The high schools represented were William Floyd, Patchogue-Medford, Bellport, Center Moriches and Longwood. “It was an absolute honor to be part of the second annual ‘Our Community Salutes’ Brookhaven Town event to thank and recognize the brave young men and women who will serve and protect our country in the Armed forces after graduation,” said Robert Vecchio, President, William Floyd Board of Education and Co-chair of Our Community Salutes Brookhaven Town. Guest speakers for the evening included New York State Senator (3rd District) and U.S. Navy Commander (Reserves) Tom Croci and U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major Michele S. Jones (the ninth person to achieve this rank and the first woman), who also served as a member of the Senior Executive Service under President Obama from 2009-2012. Senator Croci presented the first Tom and Jo-Ann Croci Foundation Enlistee

Scholarship to William Floyd High School senior, Scott Amato, who will serve in the United States Marine Corps. The second General Colin L. Powell Service award was given to William Floyd High School Naval Science Instructor Senior Chief Dwight Becherer. The award is in recognition for outstanding service and commitment to students who enlist in the military after graduation. Senior Naval Science Instructor Commander Jay Tweed (USN/RET.) received the inaugural award last year. Congratulations to all the student enlistees and their families. The Brookhaven Chapter of Our Community Salutes and the William Floyd School District is deeply grateful for their upcoming service. In addition to receiving an “Our Community Salutes” Challenge Coin, the honorees received certificates, proclamations, flags and more as thanks for their upcoming service. The William Floyd High School Building Trades & Construction Academy also created specialty picture frames for the honorees for the occasion. The bridegroom Matthew is a CNA at Saint James Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center as well. Matthew is the son of Lewis and Rhonda Sayre of Selden. Matthew and Kaitlyn reside in Selden.

Spring Fling

It’s that time of year again when high school students go to the mall to pick out tuxedos and dresses for that big day in June - the prom. Students at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Centereach Academic Center (CAC) have their own special dance right in their school. They call it the Spring Fling. Principal Sue Goltz said, “We bring the students over to the Prom Dress Boutique at the Brookhaven Youth Bureau. There they can pick through a fine selection of gowns, handbags, and costume jewelry.”

The bureau helps young ladies’ dreams come true and the service is free and kept confidential. Staff at CAC brought in shirts and ties for the male students to wear. Female students received complimentary up-dos, make-up, and manicures at the Cosmetology Program on site at CAC while male students received shaves and haircuts. Teacher Luke Mahoney said, “The staff decorated the gym, food was donated, a staff member volunteered to be the DJ, and the cosmetology and barbering students put the skills they are learning to good use on

their friends.” Goltz said, “Some of our students will never have the opportunity to go to a prom. We want them to experience the fun of getting dressed up, socializing, dancing, and having their pictures taken to celebrate and mark this special day.” Social Worker Charlie Tedesco, a professional wedding photographer, brought in a backdrop and his photography equipment and set out to capture the male and female students having fun at the Spring Fling.

Scholarships Awarded On Thursday, May 19th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 100 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to three worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot

teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased Current CRTA President Peter Leis and the gathered retired Connetquot teachers, family and friends congratulated the recipients: Christian Hamlett, nominated by his teacherparents, Remie Arena, nominated by Julia Arena, and Alexandra Gordon, nominated by her father Joseph Maniaci, each received a check from the CRTA to help cover

expenses for their future education. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. Longwood High School is proud to announce Ruojing (Jenny) Fang and Andrew Mok as the Class of 2016 valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively. A semifinalist in the prestigious 2016 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program and an AP Scholar with Distinction, Jenny Fang has a weighted GPA of 103.2 and earned perfect scores in the mathematics section on both the SAT and the ACT. She was named Outstanding High School Chemistry Student and is the regional winner of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award. As a member of the Advance Science Research program, she won a research grant for the ASE AstroSat Challenge, sponsored by the Association of Space Explorers. Jenny serves as the President of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, is a member of the National Honor Society and National Foreign Language Honor Society. She is also an accomplished violinist for the All-State Orchestra, Group and Individual. For more than two years,

Jenny has participated in the High School Research project at Brookhaven National Laboratory where she is developing anti-pancreatic cancer drugs. Her research will continue this fall at Columbia University where she will pursue a dual major in Biochemistry and Computer Science or Applied Mathematics. Salutatorian Andrew Mok is an AP Scholar with Distinction who earned perfect scores on the mathematics section of the SAT and ACT exams. He is a member of the National Honor Society, received the President’s Award for Educational Excellence and serves as historian for the Tri-M Honor Society. Additionally, Andrew earned a Certificate of Achievement from the Chinese Cultural Association of Long Island by successfully completing studies in the Chinese Language and Culture, a program he began in kindergarten. As an accomplished violinist, Andrew has received honors in the 2015 NYSCAME/SCMEA

All-County Orchestra and served as an Alternate to the 2015 NYSSMA All-State Orchestra. He is a member of the LISFA Orchestra and received the Excellence and Achievement Award for his musicianship. Since 2013, Andrew has been a member of the Stony Brook University String Quartet. Andrew has been accepted into the Honors College with a Presidential Scholarship at Stony Brook University where he will pursue a degree in Music Performance and Music Technology. “Both Jenny and Andrew have earned top honors in their class through their impressive and outstanding commitment to academic excellence,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael R.
