More than 7,000 participants helped raise a record $635,000 at four Northwell Health Walks across Long Island, Westchester and Staten Island on Sunday. From the Jones Beach boardwalk in Wantagh to Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, supporters laced up to support women and children’s health initiatives, and cardiac and cancer care. Mr. and Mrs. Met greeted walkers at the Jones Beach 5K while Zumba instructors warmed up the crowd at Midland Beach in Staten Island, part of a festive day with a serious goal: Funds go to several area hospitals, with the Jones Beach walk benefiting Northwell’s Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New Hyde Park. “This day is about empowering women and their families and helping them on the path to

Students at Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School were recently visited by foodallergy educator Kyle Dine for a fun and informative presentation about food allergy awareness and prevention. Mr. Dine’s program consisted of a lively
presentation involving puppets to teach students and parents about food allergies and lifethreatening reactions to certain foods. Throughout the duration of his presentation, he spent time interacting with students as they related their own personal experiences with allergies and medications

Space Station Lesson What started as a hobby for St. Joseph School’s Technical Director and Technology Teacher Jennifer Medordi, HAM Radio, ended up taking her whole school to space Monday morning as more than 300 people packed St. Joseph’s gym to see a dozen students from the school speak directly to astronaut Jack Fischer. The direct contact with the space station was the culmination to a school year that celebrated man’s exploration of space, and the fascination people have had throughout time with the exploration and conquest of space. Around the beginning of 2016 Ms. Medordi mentioned a program called ARISS, which is an acronym for Amateur Radio on the International Space Station, to Principal Richard Kuntzler and asked if she could pursue placement in the program for St. Joseph’s students. “Jennifer explained that the ARISS program was a comprehensive program with suggested readings, handson assignments and other related work that gave students a broad historical, scientific and cultural perspective on space exploration.” Said Mr. Kuntzler. “I was intrigued by the idea, but because only about a dozen schools get chosen nationally each year to participate, I wasn’t planning around the program just yet.” Stated Kuntzler. That all changed when St. Joseph School was notified that they were just one of 14 schools nationally, and the only Catholic school selected to participate during the 2016 – 2017 school year. Ms. Medordi, an amateur radio operator and a lifelong technology enthusiast, gave the school a real advantage. In her proposal, Ms. Medordi outlined the current STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program already in place at St. Joseph’s and identified some crosscurricular opportunities they could take advantage of if selected. “The initial meeting with the rest of the faculty at St. Joseph’s just blew me away.” Said Ms. Medordi. “The teachers all enthusiastically embraced the concept and identified places where space exploration and radio communication could be embedded into all subjects,
including Social Studies, English Language Arts, Music, Art and Religion.” Continued Ms. Medordi. Since the beginning of the school year students at St. Joseph’s have read books on space, listened to space inspired music, and have learned about radio waves and rocket trajectories. There have even been three teacherdesigned ‘Space Days’ with themes that have included ‘Space History’ where they studied the Mercury, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions. They’ve learned about ‘Living in Space’ where they did activities that simulated space living and exercises for living in microgravity. And they’ve projected what the future might hold on ‘Colonizing Mars’ day. On ‘HAM Radio Day’, Ms. Medordi and her father, Paul Janson set up and radio operations
in the school allowing students to make contacts across the tri-state area to better understand HAM radio. Today’s contact with the International Space Station was led by 12 students from the school who became ‘Space Ambassadors’ by qualifying via an essay contest. The Ambassadors, and the rest of their classmates put together a list of 20 questions that represented the things that they wanted to know, and that hopefully hadn’t been asked before. Some of the questions included: If you could go back in time and say something to your pre-astronaut self, what would it be?
Do you perceive time differently in space? How does your view of Earth impact your perspective on humanity and how has the experience affected your faith? Fr. Mike Reader, Pastor of St. Joseph’s Parish, noted the profound changes we’ve seen in society in the 50 years since the Christmas Eve reading from the Book of Genesis during America’s Apollo 8 mission, and contrasted that with today’s global cooperative International effort. He noted that the International Space Station is the largest non-war international collaboration in history with 16 countries collaborating, and he thanked Ms. Medordi for “lighting the flame of space exploration in the school, and for all of the rest of the teachers in the school for fanning that flame.” The ARISS Program is a once-in-alifetime experience made possible by the Amateur Radio community and NASA. Inaugural Relay for Life
The Connetquot Central School District recently celebrated its first Relay for Life event, bringing together district staff, students and community members to rally together and raise funds for cancer research. The night’s events consisted of speeches of encouragement and inspiration from
Connetquot High School psychologist and event coordinator Courtney Huguenin, current students Marina Duszak and Kevin Ferrara, as well as an emotional survivor lap recognizing those who have beaten their disease and a luminary ceremony to honor those still fighting and those no longer with
us today. Throughout the months of highly successful fundraising and the generosity of the school community, the district was able to collect $52,017 for the American RELAY FOR LIFE - On May 20th, Councilman Michael Loguercio was on-hand at the Cancer Society. CAKE IN A JAR - In celebration of Mother’s Day, the Connetquot Public Library held “Mother’s Day Cake in a Jar,” on Saturday May 13th. Children had the opportunity to make two delicious desserts to celebrate the special day. With help from The Baking Coach, they learned how to crumble cake and make a tasty filling using Cool Whip and cream cheese. There’s always success in the mixing and merging of creativity and fun! As children took home their colorful masterpieces, topped off with imagination and love, the library hopes Mother’s Day was filled with joy for all.

College Scholarships Awarded On Thursday, May 18th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held it’s annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Over 100 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to four worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. Many of the retirees traveled from outside the area, several from the Sunshine State! Among the retirees was former Peconic Street JHS Principal, and later Connetquot Schools Superintendent, Mr. John Maloney. The CRTA Scholarships
are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased over the years. CRTA President Peter Leis and the gathered retired Connetquot teachers, family and friends congratulated the recipients: Germaine Harbaugh, nominated by her grandmother Germaine Ortiz, Carly Dobert, nominated by her grandmother Maureen Dobert, Jessica Kamen, nominated by her grandmother Laurie
Schwartz and Dylan Saposnick, nominated by his grandmother Sybil Saposnick. Each student received a check in the amount of $1,000 to help them finance their college educations. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. The members of the CRTA congratulate Germaine Horbaugh, Carly Dobert, Jessica Kamen and Dylan Saposnick and wish them continued success in their educational, and professional, pursuits!
DECORATING WORKSHOPS - As the school year ends and summer draws near, the Connetquot Public Library looks forward to a season filled with inspiration, imagination and of course, fun! On Monday, May 15th, teens took part in a Summer Decorating Workshop and on May 17th our younger patrons took part in “Summer Reading Club Decorating.” For this year’s theme “Build a Better World,” teens helped with decorations and our younger patrons decorated a globe. All of these wonderful creations will remain on display in the Children’s Services Department during the summer months.
Research Symposium
On Tuesday, May 16th, St. John the Baptist DHS held its second annual GENESIS Science Research Symposium. Seven St. John’s seniors presented the results of the research projects that they have been working on for the past year. They were: Maria AvilaFranklin of Nesconset with her project, An Educational Case Study: The Impact of Motivation on Latinas of Low Socioeconomic Status in the Pursuit of Higher Education, Sachin Devasahayam of Commack with his project, Affecting Behavior: The Effect of Positive Reinforcement and Punishment on Executive Function in High School Students, Nicole Messina of Selden, who studied Sleep and Cognitive Functioning: The Effect of Sleep Time on Short-Term Working
Memory, Maureen Petica of Massapequa who studied The Effect of Technology Use on Social Anxiety in High School Students, Marisa Pollock of Middle Island with her project The Effect of Teaching Style on Sport Skill Acquisition, Julial Romanelli of Smithtown with her study The Effect of Genre of Music on Speed of Cognitive Processing and Jennie Rostkowski of Oakdale with her project The Effect of Class Placement on the Big Fish-Little Pond Effect in High School Students. In addition to the seven presenters, seven juniors displayed the results of their projects and answered questions during a question and answer segment that was held during the program. The St. John the Baptist DHS GENESIS program allows students to pursue
scholarly research in one of the fields of Science. Students apply for admittance to the GENESIS program at the end of their freshman year. Selected students are enrolled in the first level of GENESIS which teaches them how to conduct scholarly research in Science. As students’ progress, they choose a topic that they are interested in researching and are given ownership of that project. Mr. Ken Bohman, a science teacher at St. John the Baptist and Director of the GENESIS program, was thrilled to see the results of this year’s hard work. He stated “I am constantly amazed at what our St. John the Baptist students can achieve when given resources and opportunity. It has been a pleasure working with such talented and motivated students.”

VETERAN HONORED - On Saturday, May 20th, Congressman Lee Zeldin attended the Suffolk County Armed Forces Day Ceremony at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge. Celebrated on the third Saturday in May every year, Armed Forces Day was first observed in 1950 to honor those who have served and those who continue to serve in the five branches of the U.S. military. William Rodriguez, a U.S. Navy veteran, was one of the veterans to be honored at the ceremony. Mr. Rodriguez is retiring as a staffer of the Suffolk County Veterans Service Office, and was presented with a proclamation for his years of service.

Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in
the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Rosen, MD, vice president of women’s health at the Katz Institute for Women’s Health. “The support we received – both in turnout and through donation – at all four venues is absolutely fantastic. The Katz Institute for Women’s Health is one
of the beneficiaries and we are committed to the health of women of all ages through clinical programs, education, research and community partnerships.” Since its inception, the Northwell Health Walk has raised nearly $3.3 million. Donations will be collected through June 9th.
It will also save lives. Matthew Gendron is proof. His team, which marched en masse at Jones Beach, was simply happy to see the 19 yearold from Howard Beach, Queens, still standing after he was rushed to Cohen Children’s in septic shock last May. “I was 30 minutes away from dying,” said Mr.
Gendron. “I’m walking to say thank you to the doctors who saved my life and to raise money so other kids can receive the same care and go on to have a happy life.” Mr. Gendron was born with a rare blood disease, known as Auto Immune Lympho Proliferative Syndrome (ALPS), which is defined by a low platelet
count. Cohen Children’s previously treated his preexisting condition. But one morning last May, he woke up very ill and was rushed to Cohen, where he passed out in the elevator upon arrival. Medical staff quickly diagnosed Mr. Gendron and he recovered after five weeks of treatment in the Pediatric Intensive Care
Unit. “No matter how bad it got, I knew Matthew was in the best hands and I never once doubted that they would save my son,” said his mother, Holly Gendron. “We are raising money so that other families can receive the support and care my family was given.”
