Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve
children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and
literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in
schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Longevity in marriage is something to be celebrated. Couples who reach fiftieth and sixtieth wedding anniversaries often commemorate those anniversaries with big parties. But there are some around the world who would consider golden anniversary celebrants to still be newlyweds. In December 2015, Karam Chand, 110, and his wife, Kartari Chand, 103, from Bradford, West Yorkshire (originally from India), celebrated their 90th wedding anniversary, becoming the world’s longest-betrothed couple. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.

Government Discussion In coordination with their recent social studies lessons, Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III recently paid the third grade students of Idle Hour Elementary School a visit to discuss the importance of voting and what it’s like to work within the New York State government. To begin his presentation,
the students were asked what the three branches of government consisted of, to which they correctly answered by stating judicial, legislative and executive. During the course of his visit, students learned of the multistep process which is required to pass laws, and took part in a fun activity – which
choice they would prefer: no school on Friday or no homework during the week. Prior to making their decision, the students debated on important pros and cons of both sides, and ultimately came to a respectful conclusion that they would prefer there be no homework issued, alongside a full, five-day week of school.

The Charity of the Month for May is: Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) www.BACAworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.) is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that exists to provide aid, comfort, safety and support for children that have been sexually, physically and emotionally abused. They are dedicated to the principle that ‘one of the basic rights of childhood is to be safe and protected’. When a child’s family or environment has failed them, B.A.C.A. stands ready to help. One of the greatest and most unique assets of B.A.C.A. for children is their “biker family attitude”. Bikers are a tightly knit group. The brotherhood and family values are not just a way to live, but a way of life. One for all and all for one is not just a quote but it is their reality. After children have been introduced into the B.A.C.A. family they are not helpless or powerless anymore. The Long Island B.A.C.A. Chapter had their 100 Mile Ride Event on Saturday, May 18, 2019. Thousands of B.A.C.A. members from around the world participated in this event in various countries and states on the same day! They raised awareness of child abuse and of the services they provide for abused children all over the world.

Some requirements are that you have a desire to help abused children, you have regular access to a motorcycle, you are 18 years or older, you can pass an NCIC fingerprint check and you can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events (their meetings are held the second Sunday of every month at the American Legion Hall in Bohemia at 9:00AM unless it’s a holiday). According to the home improvement resource HomeAdvisor, adding square footage to a home can cost homeowners anywhere from $7,000 to $100,000. When adding square footage to a home, homeowners may need to knock down an interior wall or walls, the cost of which can vary widely depending on the walls being knocked down. Loadbearing walls are needed to support the home, and while such walls can be removed, homeowners may need to hire structural engineers at additional cost to orchestrate such removals. In addition, homeowners can expect to pay more when knocking down walls that contain ducts or electrical wiring. It also can be costly for homeowners whose homes are old to knock down walls. HomeAdvisor notes that the wall-removal process in old homes that contain lead paint or lathand-plaster walls is more intricate and may cost homeowners more money.

Leadership Recognition Awards program,” said Senator Boyle. “The program recognizes and honors outstanding students who will become our future leaders.” Edward Sollazzo was nominated for this prestigious award by his physical education teacher, Katherine Marasia. She praised his work ethic, mentioned that he is an Advanced Placement student, active
in the community, excels in two varsity sports and participates in the school’s symphony orchestra. Edward is also a member of the National Math Honor Society. As part of his Eagle Scout project, he created a Buddy Bench and little free library at Sycamore Avenue Elementary School and donated funds received to the school for upcoming projects.
The Great Wall Technology took third grade students at Grundy Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District on a trip across the world during a recent activity that utilized Google Expedition headsets to explore the Great Wall of China. With help from
technology integration specialist Claudia Camassa, the third graders used the virtual reality headsets to visit iconic locations along the Great Wall such as the Gubeikou Pass, the Long Fortress, the Simatai Section and the Tower. At each stop along the virtual trip, students learned
interesting information about the area. The virtual visit to the Great Wall served as a culminating activity to lessons on China that explored economy, government, geographic features, tourist areas and culture.

Recently at Hiawatha Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, each first grade class performed a creative, choreographed dance for an audience of kindergarten students and their fellow first graders as
part of the Circle of Dance program. During the program, students learned essential dance skills, such as balance, coordination and flexibility, while memorizing each of their individualized dance
routines. Working together through eight practices, students also learned the importance of teamwork and collaboration while working to perfect their routines.
Without having to book an international plane ticket, sixth and seventh grade students from Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School recently interacted and learned about a handful of exotic animals, courtesy of Nature Nick of Nature
Nick’s Animal Adventures. For his presentation, Nature Nick brought along a number of animals to showcase including “Bananas” the toucan, “Bubbles” the African Barbary falcon, “Meatloaf” the Flemish giant rabbit, “King Arthur” the Western crowned pigeon, along
with “Fabio” the Chilean flamingo. In addition to offering rich descriptions detailing the animals’ native land, diet and life cycles, Nature Nick also allowed a handful of volunteers to hold the animals for a few moments, which they clearly enjoyed.

Practice With A Pro Sachem High School East business students engaged in hands-on learning in William Ward’s class during a recent visit from mindSHIFT Senior Manager for Human Resources, Janelle Alberigo. To begin the special visit, Alberigo explained the role
of someone who works in human resources, the career path she followed and the versatility of the position she holds today. With the guidance of Alberigo, students participated in mock interviews in which they pretended to be a human resources manager. They
received bad interview calls and calls in which the interviewee was well prepared. Throughout the informative, hands-on activity, students gained insight into this and other aspects of the human resources profession.
Five Seneca Middle School student-chefs from the Sachem Central School District showcased their cooking creativity as they secured a firstplace finish at the ninth annual Junior Iron Chef competition held at Whole Foods Market in Lake Grove. For the fourth consecutive year, Seneca assembled a team of talented student-chefs who finished first amongst junior chefs from across Long Island. All students attended the competition with a prepared recipe and cooked their dish in the
allotted one-hour cook time. The educational cooking event encourages students to learn and execute the culinary skills necessary to prepare dishes essential for a healthy lifestyle. The competition promotes the use of local food to support farmers and the environment. Each recipe was judged on taste, presentation, creativity, use of local ingredients, use of USDA ingredients, healthy choices and cafeteria readiness. Each team worked closely with its family and consumer science
teachers to develop recipes and practiced for many hours leading up to the contest. Seneca’s team, “The GOATS,” composed of eighth grade students Leah Ferrara, Sofia Iacono, Andrew Macchio, Gianna Scolaro and Jackie Volo, secured the firstplace finish with their dish, Caribbean Breakfast Salad. The winning dish consisted of a fluffy French toast base topped with a hearty slice of grilled pineapple, topped with an arugula salad covered in a raspberry Dijon glaze.
