embers of the Holtsville Residents Association and Beautification Watch joined with local legislators to kick-off the 8th Annual Great Brookhaven Cleanup. More than 2,600 people participated in the clean-up, which was held on Saturday, May 16th, at over 100 locations throughout Brookhaven Town. On June 4th, Mercy Haven, Inc. will host its 16th Annual Golf Outing in an effort to raise critical funds for the agency which provides housing and support services to those who are homeless or living with mental illness. Empire National Bank Vice President and Branch Manager Dorothy Overton, who serves as Board Chair for Mercy Haven, emphasized Empire’s commitment to community issues like those addressed by Mercy Haven. “Everyone deserves safe and dignified

The Art League of Long Island’s Summer Portfolio Program, now in its 20th year, is back with a new lead instructor and a fresh new approach. Under the direction of Artist/Instructor Nikki Girgenti, teens ages 1417 will be able to fully immerse themselves in the creative process, develop a sense of camaraderie and community with their fellow artists, and expand their portfolios as they strive to set themselves apart as artists. The Summer Portfolio
Program will help students understand the importance and the dynamics involved in creating an above average art portfolio, given the competitive nature of the college admissions process. Studies in observational drawing, figure drawing, mixed media, watercolors, acrylic, printmaking, digital photography, landscapes, book arts, found object art, sculpture, and alternative techniques will be explored. Students will enjoy unique experiences, such as mock portfolio
reviews, creating digital portfolios, guest speakers, and much more. This is a great opportunity for high school students to spend time developing their portfolios; whether they plan on applying to a BFA program, intend to submit an art supplement, or simply want to add to their breadth of artwork as they prepare for AP or IB art courses in High School. The Summer Portfolio sessions take place 9:30am to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday
at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills in two 3-week sessions: July 6th-24th and July 27th-August 14th. Nikki Girgenti is an accomplished artist and educator who earned her MA at Stony Brook University and BA at Dowling College. With nearly a decade of teaching at the Art League, including two years of administrative experience in the League’s Summer Art Adventure Program, and eight years of teaching high school art, Girgenti brings a fresh approach combined with
a strong record of success to the Summer Portfolio Program. She currently teaches 11th grade Portfolio and 12th grade Advanced Portfolio and has a reputation for guiding scores of students towards outstanding outcomes. The Art League of Long Island will be offering a Scholarship for a $630 tuition voucher toward session one or two of Summer Portfolio Development 2015. Scholarship Awards Ceremony On Monday evening, May 18th, Mr. Tony Felicio, Jr, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the organization’s annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Felicio and CTA committee members, welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the six winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500. Felicio said “… on behalf of the members of the Connetquot Teachers Association, I would like to express how proud we are of our teachers for being chosen by former students as the teacher who has made a positive difference in their lives. I would also like to congratulate the students and their parents for their commitment and dedication toward academic excellence.” The topic of the essay was The Teacher Who Made a Difference in my Life; the teachers themselves were humbled by the students’ kind words. Over 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the
following Connetquot students were selected as the six winning entries: Elaina Batista (Mr. Michael Murphy), Jonathan Forberg (Mrs. Laurie Schwartz), Lawrence Brett (Mrs. Rosemary Riegger), Steven Crescenti (Mrs. Eileen McGinnis), and Katlyn Boodram (Ms. Jennifer

The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. The New York State United Teachers Association has recognized the CTA with the prestigious NYSUT community Service Award. Mr. Felicio and CTA Vice President Mr. Chris Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families, for submitting quality essays. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot’s professional educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized, and brought at least one of them to tears. (LICADD) was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Long Island Community Foundation for the Military Families in Training (M-FIT) Program. Given the stressful nature of the military and the traumatizing experiences of war, many veterans experience psychological distress that is complicated by substance use. Many of these veterans are experiencing serious mental health concerns including substance use disorders (SUD) posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, depression and serious psychological distress (SPD). Due to the challenge of engaging veterans, LICADD will work to increase awareness of the M-FIT program to reach

Eyes On The Sky By: Jamie Lynn Ryan At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the
show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being
forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!
Middle Country Central School District Stagecoach Elementary School student, Breanna Clark, recently competed in a National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky where she received recognition for her athleticism. Breanna’s team, New
York Rolling Fury, was one of 32 teams across the country chosen to compete. Although ranked as 29th, Breanna’s team seeded in 12th place and she was named “All-Tournament” for her basketball talent. Breanna hopes to compete in the 2020 Paralympic Games and credits her
teacher, Laura Zavatto, for constantly pushing her to do her best. The district presented Breanna with a Certificate of Recognition and celebrated her accomplishments at a Board of Education Meeting.

Senior Named Finalist Longwood High School senior Dunya Hamdan has been selected as a finalist in Photographer Forum magazine’s 35th Annual College & High School Photo Contest, sponsored by Nikon. The contest received more than 17,000 photographs from students all over the world.
As part of the competition, her photograph will be featured in the magazine’s annual publication, “Best of College and High School Photography 2015.” Photographer’s Forum magazine is an awardwinning quarterly publication dedicated to quality reproduction of
photography in the United States and Canada. Each issue strives to facilitate communication and publication experience among emerging professionals. Stepping Back In Time
Dressed in colonial era vests and skirts, the fourth grade students at Coram Elementary School recently stepped back in time to learn about life during the American Revolution. As part of the social studies curriculum, the
students participated in a two-day, fully interactive experience, including spy games, protests, military strategies, revolutionary era medicine and a complete historical reenactment of the Boston Tea Party. Through the involvement
of the PTA, local historians and teachers, the students were able to see and touch history. “It was very fun,” said fourth grade student Zoie Mastriano. “It felt like we were really part of the revolution!”

Volunteer Award Winners On May 8th, Councilwoman Jane Bonner honored recipients of the Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau Volunteer Awards from Council District 2 during the 35th annual ceremony at Town Hall. The awards recognize volunteers from each Council District who work with and assist young people, whether they are individual adults, service
groups, or young people themselves. The event was hosted by the Town of Brookhaven Youth Board which is an advisory board to the Youth Bureau. “Congratulations to all of our Youth Volunteer award winners,” said Councilwoman Bonner. “Your commitment to helping the youth of our community is greatly appreciated and I thank you for making Brookhaven a

Pre-K Donation Selden Centereach Youth Association’s Helping Hands Food Pantry. With the help of friends and family, word of mouth and social media, Kaylee was able to collect enough donations to “Kaylee Cares Spring Food Drive” to provide three vans worth of food to local families in need. Kaylee collected donations, opened shipments, organized, bagged food, helped load
and unload the vans, placed food on the pantry shelves and designed thank-you cards to everyone that contributed. Kaylee was honored by the school district with a Certificate of Pride and by the Selden Centereach Youth Association with a Certificate of Appreciation. Kaylee plans to help people find jobs, clean up parks and beaches, and have another food drive in the future.

On Saturday, May 16th, the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association and President Ellyn Okvist, celebrated Armed Forces Day at the site of the WWII Lake Ronkonkoma Memorial tree at the intersection of Portion Road and Hawkins Avenue. Local and Suffolk County elected officials joined the community to honor those citizen-soldiers serving today, as well as all veterans. A special presentation was made to eight WWII veterans that were invited to take part in the Armed Forces Day event. The following WWII Veterans were honored at the May 16th celebration: Luca Coacci (Army), Walter Hazlitt (Marines), George Allen Okvist (Navy), Joseph J. Rongo (Army), Abraham Strutin (Army Air Corps),
Marvin Thorne (Army Air Corps), James Wellinghoff (Navy), and Frank Zamarelli (Army). Mrs. Okvist singled out the individual WWII veterans for their sacrifice and courage. Armed Forces Day provides a wonderful opportunity to thank those currently serving in our military forces, and remember those veterans who have worked so hard to protect us, and our way of life. American Legion Post #155 led the ceremonies with the Pledge of Allegiance and 21 gun salute. Mrs. Okvist thanked the many organizations and individuals who took part in the Armed Forces Day celebration: Suffolk County Comptroller John Kennedy; County Legislators Leslie Kennedy and Tom
Cilmi; Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine; Cynthia Ventura, President of the Long Island Blue Star Moms; Loretta Hall of the Spirit of Long Island Mounted Drill team, and AnneMarie Pszybylski, of Boy Scout Troop #79; each spoke before the assembled honorees. Students Tianna Balkin, Emma Tess & Isabella Antonia Gordon took part in the ceremonies distributing programs, roses and plaques to the veterans. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Scholarships Awarded On Tuesday, May 12th, the Connetquot Retired Teachers Association (CRTA) held its annual Scholarship Luncheon at Captain Bill’s restaurant in Bay Shore. Close to 75 retired Connetquot School District educators, spouses and friends, joined to catch up on the news, enjoy a tasty lunch and distribute financial awards to five worthy individuals with ties to the Connetquot Central School District. The CRTA Scholarships are awarded to deserving high school, or college, students who are nominated by current, or retired, Connetquot teachers. According to CRTA President Peter Leis, “Thanks to the generosity of our retired teachers, the number and total amount of these financial awards has increased Current CRTA President Peter Leis, and former president Marilyn Aitken, congratulated the recipients and their families: Max Green maintains a 4.0 high school GPA. He is involved in many extracurricular activities including DECA, Varsity Tennis, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He has also earned two Business Achievement awards. Max holds the rank of Boy Scout, First Class, and will attend the University of Connecticut in the Fall. Bridgit Murray is graduating with an unweighted 3.8 GPA and is a member of the National, Spanish,
English, History and Science Honor Societies. She is the Treasurer of the American Sign Language Club, and founding member of the school’s TV and Studio Media Club. She plans to major in Elementary Education. Lauren O’Mara has maintained a 4.0 GPA through high school, has been on high honor roll for every quarter. She also serves as gymnastics coach in Garden City, and
tutors elementary students for whom English is not their first language. She has been a lifeguard for several summers and a Teacher’s Assistant at Dance Camp. She plans to major in Biomedical Englineering in college. Justin Summers will graduate with a cumulative GPA of 4.04, ranked 13th in his class. He has completed
six AP courses and founded the Young Politicians Club at school, to replace the Young Democrats, and Young Republican Clubs. Outside the classroom he devotes most of his time to swimming, and hopes to qualify for NCAA Championships next year as a student-athlete at Georgetown University. Stephanie Voegele is married, raising three children, having graduated from St. Joseph’s College, and is currently working on her Master’s degree. After graduating from high school Stephanie went on to serve four years in the U.S. Navy, and would later earn four teaching certifications: Early Childhood, Childhood, Students With Disabilities, Early Childhood and Students With Disabilities, Childhood. She currently attends Long Island University. The CRTA continues to support and educate Connetquot’s retired teachers and keeps its members up to date on legal and financial matters. The organization has also supported such efforts as Make a Wish Foundation, Walk for Breast Cancer, ALS Society, and local food pantries. Congratulations to Max Green, Bridgit Murray, Lauren O’Mara, Justin Summers and Stephanie Voegele and their families, and continued success in your educational, and professional, pursuits!

Shelter Island High School students, along with group advisor Janine Mahoney, have been long time supporters and volunteers of Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk’s Student Build Program. Most recently, the district received a donation from Shelter Island Presbyterian Church in the amount of $1,300, which they gifted to Habitat. Over the years, the school has raised more than
$9,000 and hundreds of SIHS students have participated in the program. In addition to their volunteer efforts the school has donated new building supplies and tools to Habitat projects. Donations Sought Family & Children’s Association (FCA), one of Long Island’s oldest and largest human service agencies, is inviting Long Islanders to support their annual Summer Camp Appeal. For many families, the summer means free time, trips and camp for the kids. But, for the families served by FCA who are working one, two or even three minimum-wage jobs, the summer is difficult because they cannot afford
quality childcare to keep their children safe. A summer spent alone, in front of the TV, can lead to summer learning loss which hurts these children when summer ends and they return to school. FCA’s goal is to help 60 children by providing a $1,000 camp scholarship to families living below the federal poverty level. According to President/CEO Jeffrey L. Reynolds, Ph.D., “our wish is that all children can be
protected and nourished through a summer camp experience that stimulates and challenges them academically, physically and emotionally, and keeps them safe while their parents work.
