The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinical-based study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the

late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. Sachem High School East junior Samantha Christian was recently named as one of 83 artists to showcase her artwork, “Overwhelmed,” at the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island: Best Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum exhibition.

Each year, the Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington hosts a juried high school art exhibition which serves as the culmination to a competition that involves high school art students analyzing works of art on display at the museum

and choosing one to use as inspiration for their own creation. In addition to Samantha’s outstanding accomplishment, she also received the Heckscher Achievement Award and the Huntington Fine Arts Honorable Mention.

Hope House Ministries Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a nonproﬁt organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal ﬁnancial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. The answer is best left to the words of one of our alumni, “Hope House is truly a miracle. And that miracle is healing.” Simply put, your contributions make this miracle happen. The three most popular programs that HHM runs are their Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary, Montfort Therapeutic Residences and Pax Christi, their Emergency Shelter. See below for more information on each of these programs. Hope Academy at Little Portion Friary: In response to the opioid crisis, HHM

acquired Little Portion Friary in Mount Sinai in 2016 as a means of increasing their ability to serve more young men struggling with opioid addiction. This program assists in the development of a life plan with short and long term goals. It also promotes the development of interpersonal skills. The length of stay varies based on need, averaging 12-18 months. Each person is treated individually by professional clinical staff. Montfort Therapeutic Residences: This is an intensive therapeutic treatment facility for children ages 11-18 who find themselves caught in the family court system. These children come to them at a time of great crisis in their young lives. Montfort Therapeutic provides the young residents with a healthy, stable environment, a school program, individual counseling, group dynamics and educational recreational outings. The program also includes aftercare services for children returning home. Pax Christi: This emergency shelter offers guests who are homeless a safe alternative to the streets. Pax Christi offers case management, drug and alcohol counseling, mental health counseling, linkages to benefits and resources in the community, as well as the basics of food and shelter. Over 50 active volunteers assist with cleaning, making beds, painting, serving meals and providing food and clothing for guests. HHM is truly a selfless and heartwarming non-profit right here on Long Island. No one should ever feel that they need to suffer alone, that they are not being heard, that they can’t ask for help or that they are hopeless. Canoe And Kayak Storage Rack Program Just In Time For The Summer Season Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office joined with representatives from the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and Laborers Local 66 at Blydenburgh County Park to announce the launch of the “Suffolk County Canoe and Kayak Storage Rack Pilot Program”. Together, they unveiled the first of six storage racks for canoes and kayaks which will be located at various parks and beaches across the county beginning Memorial Day. This initiative, spearheaded by Majority Leader Legislator Berland, will allow residents to rent a space to lock their kayak or canoe for the entire season, making it easier and more convenient for them to enjoy the water in our county parks and beaches. The program was unanimously approved by both the Suffolk County Parks Trustees and then the Suffolk County Legislature at the May 11th General Meeting. The material and labor used to construct the racks were generously donated. The material by the Suffolk County Alliance of Chambers and the labor by Laborers Local 66. The program allows residents to purchase a seasonal sticker to place on their canoe or kayak. They will then be assigned a specific storage rack location and are responsible for providing their own device(s) to secure the canoe or kayak to the rack. The season will run from Memorial Day through Columbus Day and spaces will be assigned on a first come first serve basis. Storage racks will be located at Blydenburgh County Park in Smithtown, Southaven County Park in Brookhaven,

Lake Ronkonkoma County Park in Lake Ronkonkoma, Timber Point Golf Course in Great River, Indian Island County Park in Riverhead and Smith Point County Park Marina in Shirley. Permits can be purchased in-person through the Suffolk County Parks Department at the West Sayville Administration Building (200 Montauk Highway, West Sayville). Those interested in reserving a space may download the form online at https:// w w w. s u f f o l k c o u n t y n y. gov/Departments/ Parks/Doing-Business/ Seasonal-Kayak-CanoeStorage-Rentals. For Suffolk County residents who are Green Key Card holders there is a $100 fee for a seasonal permit and a $250 fee for nonresidents. “We are so fortunate to live in a place where we have beautiful waterways, beaches and parks,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I sponsored this program to make it easier and more convenient for our residents to access and enjoy the water in our County parks and beaches. Thank you to the Suffolk Alliance of Chambers and Local Laborers 66 for their generous donations and help in getting this program up and running. Buffalo State, where he has taught drawing and painting since 1997. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and has been shown internationally in Finland, China, Poland and the Czech Republic, as well as across the United States, earning numerous awards in many prestigious exhibitions. “I focus primarily on the human figure depicted in environments that create a context for psychologically charged, open ended narratives. Images of figures or figures in landscapes, in groups or in isolation, share a common feeling of significance. Wholly absorbed within themselves or the dialogue shared between one another, they wait for the unfolding of their private story.

primary inspiration. The unexpected colors and textures found in nature inspire Ron to capture the dynamics of light and dark; form and balance. As a realist, he uses tone and color to invite his audience to experience the moment captured on canvas. His preferred mediums of acrylic (for layering of color), or oil (for blending) are specifically chosen to create a sense of drama and movement. Ron is also a muralist and has done commissions for school districts, hospitals, nursing homes, municipalities, and private residences. Caryn Coville’s style is realism, and her work showcases

objects. Her award-winning work has been shown extensively in solo gallery exhibits and juried shows and her work is held in corporate and private collections throughout the United States and Canada. She has an extensive list of awards and credits for her amazing artwork. Lupe Galván grew up in rural Idaho among the farm lands of the Snake River valley, the historic land of the Shoshone people. He earned his MFA from The New York Academy of Art in 2009. Lupe’s personal cosmogony guides him to explore experiences of Indigenous roots and American life and express them through painting and drawing. Holden Willard is a 21 year old undergraduate student studying at the Montserrat College of Art. In May, he will receive his BFA in Painting, however his interests serve multiple mediums: printmaking, photography, performance, collage & woodworking. “My work is currently concerned with analyzing the effects of white male toxicity, specifically toxic masculinity. I’m mainly striving towards creating a dialogue between the past, present and future - be it through the lens of family, friends and environment. In my mind, these are essential devices that I utilize to create a coming of age narrative in rural Maine. Images from home, adventures of youth, fears and anxieties expressed through eyesight and posture - all in an effort of saying the unsaid.” Patty Yantz’ art is about personal reaction to a scene or location rather than an attempt at technical reproduction of that view. “Focusing on color, contrast and composition, I have found that close-up observation is a good tool for understanding different perspectives and developing conceptual awareness. After retiring from teaching secondary art Patty has immersed herself in her own art career. She works in Pastel, Acrylic and Watercolor, showing her works in juried and invitational exhibits across Long Island. “Nature is the underlying theme of all my work, with a major inspiration being the Long Island landscape.” STAC, a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. The great outdoors beckons people year-round, but nature is especially enticing in summer, when warm weather compels people to leave their couches and soak up some sun. Spending time outdoors is rewarding, and it can be even more so when men and women take steps to make their outdoor recreation as eco-friendly as possible. Whether it’s choosing certain activities or taking other measures, there are various ways to go green when spending time outdoors this summer and beyond.

• Leave the car at home. Americans and Canadians consume more gasoline per capita than any people in the world. According to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration and the United Nations, Americans consume 4.39 liters of gasoline per capita each day, while Canadians consume 3.62 liters per capita each day. In lieu of driving everywhere this summer, men and women who want to be more mindful of the environment can leave their cars home more frequently. Rather than driving the family to a nearby ice cream stand, walk or bike there instead. Run as many errands on foot or on a bicycle as possible. Walking or cycling is a great way to get some time outdoors on warm summer days, and reducing fuel consumption is an equally great way to help the planet.

• Vacation locally. Another way to help the planet when spending time outdoors this summer is to vacation locally. People who vacation close to home typically do not ﬂy, and that’s a significant benefit to the planet. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change notes that aviation emissions release black carbon, nitrous oxide and sulphur oxide, which contribute to the greenhouse gas effect. And while the EIA notes that

automobiles and airplanes produce relatively similar amounts of carbon dioxide per gallon, airplanes burn considerably more fuel than cars, thanks in large part to the considerable amount of fuel planes burn on the runway. teachers to enter exceptional artwork of students in grades 9-12 to the competition. Artwork submitted is juried in the following categories: drawing, painting, 3D, photography, mixed media and digital media. SCALA aims to provide a source of communication, development and support for all leaders responsible for advocating and facilitating

Newfield Student-Artist Earns Regional Recognition A Middle Country Central School District student-artist, Dom Mauri, has earned regional recognition for his unique visual communication skills. The Newfield High School senior was selected as one of 83 Long Island high school students for the Heckscher Museum of Art’s Long Island’s Best Young Artists Exhibition. Patrons can explore the exhibition online: www. heckscher.org/. “I was drawn to Dawn Lee’s abstract interpretation of energy through dramatic strokes in Bird Woman Falls. The sense of energy and

movement in this artwork reminded me of the distressing insurrection of the United States Capitol building which occurred on January 6th, 2021. I sat at my television watching thousands of people torment the integrity of our country, as they allowed their turmoils to wash over them in a fit of blind rage,” said Dom, referring to his inspiration behind his work of art. “I watched their emotion and movement contort and boil to substantial extremes, capturing the raw energy that encapsulated both themselves and the heart of America. In my artwork,

I strove to capture this energy. I didn’t want to simply interpret reality, I wanted to push reality to unorthodox extremes. Lee’s study of movement and energy of the world inspired me to create a stylized interpretation of my own, through harsh color balance and hyper stylization.” The annual exhibition challenged 331 young artists from 56 high schools across Nassau and Suffolk counties to submit their artwork for jurying by Heckscher Museum curator Karli Wurzelbacher as well as artist and guest juror Melissa Mis.

Blindness, deafness, injury, illness or special medication needs present

Recently, as part of a widespread initiative trying to manage the cat population at Hofstra University, a volunteer took on the responsibility to foster a kitten born missing its back legs. The volunteer, Claudia Cannam, a Hofstra law student, is currently looking into getting the kitten a prosthesis. Rescues the mistreat Tender Loving Cats has a Trap-Neuter-Return program that targets the feral cat explosion on Long Island. Help for ferals is available in the form of trap rental and assistance with trapping. The rescue also can offer financial assistance to low income cat parents seeking to

TEDDY BEAR MEDICAL CARE - Students in Claire Bancroft’s and Lanie Goodman’s kindergarten classes at Idle Hour Elementary School recently participated in a virtual field trip to the “Teddy Bear Clinic,” an injury prevention program sponsored by the Trauma Center at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. Connetquot Central School District Sports Girls’ Track Team Outruns Copiague HS Connetquot High School girls’ varsity track & field coach James Crowley III enthusiastically encouraged his team members during the team’s meet with Copiague HS on May 7th. Afterwards he congratulated his dedicated athletes and coaching staff the same way

after the team’s incredible 126-22 decision over the visitors, at home. Senior, Emily Medina’s 14.9 finish in the 100 meter hurdles is the second fastest time in Connetquot HS track history! Medina also finished first in the 100 meter, 200 meter and 100

meter hurdles! Senior Kinza Yasmeen finished first in the 1500 meter racewalk; Olivia Blas won the shot-put and discus events. Connetquot runners also swept the 800 meter race. The Lady T-birds are now 2-0 in Suffolk League I conference play.

Boys Varsity Lacrosse Improves To 2-0 The Connetquot boys’ varsity lacrosse team defeated crosstown rival SachemNorth, on May 6th at home, by a score of 7-5. In the most exciting game so far this season, the T-birds got off to a 5-1 lead by the half, only to

fight off a ferocious offense by the visitors in the second half to earn the win. Sophomore Tyler McCarthy scored four goals, and sophomore Tyler Moore added two. Shaun Hill went 15-16 on faceoffs, and Nick

Rizzuto (8) and Michael Monahan combined for 11 saves for the T-birds. James Engley also scored a goal and added 2 assists. Connetquot was tied with Bay Shore for first place in the challenging Suffolk Division I rankings.
