Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk www.eoc-suffolk.com The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk (EOC of Suffolk) is a non-profit organzation that operates a number of programs in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. Based in Patchogue, EOC of Suffolk is dedicated to promoting selfsufficiency among low-income families and individuals. Its programming largely centers on revitalizing communities, broadening the minds of children and assisting families in need. One of this non-profit’s programs that serves people in Suffolk County and Nassau County is called Chronic Health Care Coordination. Managed by program director Delmarie Gotti, Chronic Health Care Coordination supports individuals with such chronic illness as HIV/AIDS, mental health-related conditions, heart disease, diabetes, asthma and hepatitis C. It also serves populations with obesity, substance abuse problems, sickle cell disease and other long-term conditions.

Because of their circumstances, and because of the day-to-day life challenges many participants face, it’s often difﬁcult for them to maintain a proper focus on the management of their chronic health needs. Many are jobless and many lack an adequate supply of food. Some are homeless or have lacked proper housing for years.

EOC of Suffolk team members help their clients “navigate the system.” They can assist with the filing of applications for various forms of public assistance. They may help connect participants with food pantries and help arrange assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps. Additionally, a support team from EOC of Suffolk can help clients find housing and even help arrange for the services of a moving company. If clients are grappling with behavioral or mental health issues, EOC staffers can help them get proper professional assistance. They’ll help participants get past possible stigmas often associated with mental illness. The EOC of Suffolk team can assist by lining up such support as therapeutic assistance, group therapy and medications. While individual care plans vary from client to client, the most common, long-term goal of the Chronic Health Care Coordination program is to help participants manage their personal health care needs, stabilize their lives, become independent and find work. Clients who achieve these goals “graduate” from the program, ready to move on with their lives on a firm foundation. By Diane Caudullo Any day that starts out with the Catholic War Veterans presenting colors as Honor Guard, the Star-Spangled Banner sung beautifully by a local student and the National Anthem played by a young trumpet soloist promises to be a great day! It certainly set the stage for what was about to happen. The Greater Middle Country Chamber of Commerce hosted their first Community Fair and Music Festival on Horseblock Road in Centereach on Saturday, April 30th. The event was made possible by partnering with the Elks Club, Connect Church and The Town of Brookhaven Parks to

allow the Chamber use of their property. The Elks Club was a key component because they were able to serve as the Beer (and wine) Garden Host, which added a nice extra for the many people who came out to listen to the bands play. To add to the outdoor concert experience, there were a number of food truck vendors on hand. On the adjacent Town Park property, the vendor and craft fair was in full swing. Many local vendors were selling their wares of jewelry, crafts, toys and other products. Local organizations were amongst the vendors, promoting the many community groups, such as schools, sports and charities.

Additionally, there were many local businesses sprinkled throughout who contributed in the overall success of the day by sponsoring the event in a variety of ways. Lastly towards the back of the park on the brand new turf field, a DJ provided the beat for a bunch of fun activities for the whole family! This was an inaugural event and with the way it turned out it is sure to be an annual event, filling a need for a wonderful community that has been lacking in full on fun, community gatherings. Options For Community Living’s 40th Anniversary Ruby Gala And Casino Night Honored Dale Cole And Brian Rooney Options for Community Living, Inc. recently celebrated its 40th Anniversary with a Gala and Casino Night at the Heritage Club in Bethpage. The event acknowledged honorees Dale Cole, Newsday/ Newsday Charities, and Brian Rooney, Mutual of America as well as the retirement of founding board member, Michael McClain. Two-hundred people attended the event, which raised over $75,000 for Options’ programs which help vulnerable Long Islanders live independently in the community. Yolanda Robano-Gross, CEO at Options for Community Living, Inc. introduced the evening by acknowledging the challenges of the last two years and recognizing Options employees for their commitment to the mission. “It has been my privilege, particularly these last two years, to lead and be part of the most caring, compassionate, and strong group of individuals that we call Team Options. Over 200 strong, our team worked tirelessly to ensure the safety, dignity, and care of more than 2,400 men, women, and children across Nassau and Suffolk Counties,” remarked Ms. Robano-Gross. Options recognized honoree, Dale Cole, Community Affairs Project Manager for Newsday, and the driving force behind Newsday Charities which provides vital support to local nonprofits. “Dale has impacted countless lives through her work,” stated Yolanda Robano-Gross. “Options has been the grateful recipient of support provided through Newsday Charities for many years, and we are thankful for Newsday’s efforts to activate Long Islanders in support of our communities most vulnerable residents.”

I applaud you all.” Options also recognized the contributions of honoree Brian Rooney, Senior Vice President, Mutual of America, and active supporter of area nonprofit organizations. “While Brian lends his support to multiple organizations, he is special to us,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross. “He recognizes the needs of nonprofit organizations and acts – by volunteering and through financial support. He believes in giving back

I feel privileged to have him in our corner.” In his acceptance speech, Brian Rooney credited his parents with “teaching him the right thing to do,” and acknowledged the staff at Options for Community Living, for their compassion and kindness. Addressing the audience Brian said, “This is why I am so proud to support Options and the amazing work accomplished by their employees.” The Gala also celebrated retiring founding board member Michael McClain who encouraged everyone to “remain vigilant” as advocates for those in need of assistance, and a moving testimonial was provided by Options’ employee Michele M. Michele is a resident in Options’ supportive housing and works as a peer specialist helping support others in their recovery from mental illness. Sharing her life

field events were scheduled for the two days of competition. Teams began competing on Friday and continued throughout the Saturday morning and afternoon sessions. The Connetquot coaching staff was pleased with the turnout and organization of the day’s program. They thanked the athletes, coaches, volunteers, district administration, and generous sponsors for supporting this annual

event. Despite the intensity between competitors, it was fun to watch the girls work so hard, then shake hands and hug their opponents afterwards. This is an example of what school, and sports, should be. Congratulations to the winners, and all the competitors for an excellent example of athleticism, and sportsmanship.

New York Times bestselling author and Long Island resident Jen Calonita visited Connetquot Public Library on Tuesday, April 19, to share a fascinating career and discuss her young adult books. As an elementary school student who disliked reading, it was a fourth-grade teacher who encouraged her to find books of interest. Judy Blume’s Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing changed everything, garnering the first important lesson: the more you read, the better you will write. Upon graduation from Boston College, Jen landed a job at Teen People as an entertainment magazine editor. Interviewing celebrities such as Justin

Timberlake, Zac Ephron, and Dwayne Johnson inspired her interest in writing her first series, Secrets of my Hollywood Life. Not knowing where to begin, an editor helped her initiate the development of her first novel from rewrites to final submission. Here, Jen shared her writing process, plotting ideas on a whiteboard with sticky notes, arranging and organizing, and sometimes reorganizing. She noted the importance of carving out time to write even when life gets in the way. Finding inspiration in beloved fairy tales and pondering the fate of villains, the Fairy Tale Reform School Series was born. Imagine changing the fate of Cinderella’s

wicked stepmother and stepsisters! Its “companion” series Royal Academy Rebels is “set in a school specifically for royals-in-training.” As a fan of Disney, her Twisted Tale Series revisits and revises the adventures of classic characters. After her presentation, students asked questions such as what inspired her characters and what was coming up next. Five lucky participants took home personalized signed copies of books, and everyone received bookmarks. Jen Calonita has written over 30 books, with many right here in the library. We hope those who came found inspiration to follow their own dreams wherever they may lead.
