Tee-Off for Teens The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) hosted its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament on Tuesday, May 17th. This year, the agency was hosted at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton to raise more than $100,000 for LICADD’s teen substance abuse and addiction programs. Participants were treated to a fast speed-of-play tournament

under sunny skies, before returning to the Club for a delicious dinner overlooking Peconic Bay. At a time when so many families know first-hand the pain of having a child struggling with addiction, this event was established to respond to the escalating needs of the community. LICADD’s programs are needed more than ever, and the tournament’s proceeds are specifically earmarked in support of the agency’s

Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

In addition to providing teen-focused interventions, treatment and recovery programs, LICADD’s services aim at preventing Long Island’s youth from becoming addicted in the first place. Our program Too Good for Drugs seeks to bolster children and young adults’ self-esteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. These services are only a brief snapshot of the wide range of resources that LICADD provides: the agency conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. LICADD also offers evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and advocates for comprehensive and responsible public policy related to addiction.

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., was again invited to attend the May 12th Bagels and Books Breakfast at the Children’s Center at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Felicio was invited by Ms. Andrea Ramos-Topper, EAC Regional Director, to join fellow children’s advocates who have been working together with the Education & Assistance Corporation (EAC). The EAC operates the Children’s Center to provide a safe area for youngsters while their families are involved in court proceedings. For the past 10 years, Connetquot teachers have supplied children’s books, clothing, healthy snacks, bottled water and fruit juices, tissues and paper towels to be used by the youngsters at the Children’s Center. On this latest visit, Felicio, and CTA member Mrs. Lisa Manzo, delivered a handcart filled with children’s books, along with jackets, coats, hats

Connetquot teachers stopped by earlier this school year to provide additional hats, scarves, gloves and toys to the Children’s Center. The children leave the center with new books, and warm clothes. Felicio thanked Mrs. Cheryl Zimmer, who is retiring as Supreme Court Advisory Board CoChair, for the years she has dedicated to the success of the Children’s Center, and welcomed the Honorable Judge Janine A. BarberaDalli who will be her successor. “As educators, we come to the profession because we love working with, and helping, youngsters. We do that every day within the school house,” said the CTA President. “To be able to have a positive effect on children outside of the classroom is very gratifying to us.” Felicio has assured the EAC of the Connetquot Teachers Association’s continued support.

and gloves that the center can distribute to visiting children. Felicio thanked the organization for the services and supplies they make available to the children, and their families. He also thanked the advisory board members, and fellow advocates, for allowing the Connetquot Teachers Association to be a part of this important effort. Felicio noted that the work done by the employees and the volunteers at the Children’s Center is vitally important to the youngsters that visit. The center also allows families to know their children are in a safe, nurturing, environment for the time that they need to take care of business while at the courts. The center is open five days per week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the supervision of Head Teacher Tinamarie Bernocco. Last year the Children’s Center serviced over 1,500 children. Since January alone, reflecting an increase in the number of children serviced, over

During the 2015-2016 academic year, faculty instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing clinical professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care. At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the “amazing” breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete

college. Completing the two years of HOPE inspired three students to stay and attend Stony Brook University in the fall to continue to strive towards achieving their goals. One of those students, Michelle Najera, of Longwood High School, has an interest in dentistry. She credits the program with connecting her with a member of the dental school faculty and assisting her in the admissions process for college. “I made some really good connections through the program as well,” she said. “I got to meet Dr. Carrion and he wrote me a letter of recommendation which I believe helped me a tremendous amount when applying to college.” Katterin De La Cruz

from Brentwood High School plans to become an emergency medicine physician or a surgeon. She says that she loves the “rush of the emergency room” and “the idea that every case that walks through the door has its own unique story amazes me and that one day I would be the one putting people back together is just very cool.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include: Allegheny College, Cornell University, Farmingdale State College, Monroe College, St. Joseph’s College, SUNY New Paltz, Suffolk County Community College, and West Virginia University.

Thirteen high school seniors who completed Stony Brook University Hospital’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program celebrated their “graduation” from the program and are on their way to college. A ceremony took place at the hospital on May 10th to honor their accomplishments. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students from the Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch school districts and preps them for future careers in the health industry. On Tuesday evening, May 17th, Mr. Anthon Felicio, Jr, President of the Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) hosted a reception and awards ceremony for the winners of the organization’s annual essay contest. Held at the colorfully decorated library at Connetquot High School, Felicio and CTA committee members, welcomed the selected students, their parents and the teachers “… who made a difference …” in their lives. Each of the five winning students received an attractive certificate, a copy of their winning essay, and a check for $500. “I would like to express how proud we are of our teachers for being chosen by former students as the teacher who has made a positive difference in their lives. I would also like to congratulate the students and their parents for their commitment and dedication toward academic excellence,” said Felicio. The topic of the essay was The Teacher

Who Made a Difference in my Life Close to 200 essays were read and graded by a committee of CTA members from Connetquot HS, as well as the middle and elementary schools. Essays submitted by the following Connetquot students were selected as the five winning entries: Hafeza Mim (Mrs. Debra Smith), Amber Hughes (Mrs. Pat Krawczyk), Emily Farrell (Mrs. Pat Nixon), Katie Kresic (Mrs. Cheryl Sosa) and Ryann Brennen (Mrs. Christine Carino). The Connetquot Teacher’s Association has been increasingly involved in community events such as providing financial support of both boys’ & girls’ local sports teams, collecting clothing & snacks for the needy, raising funds for cancer research, as well the financial awards for graduating Connetquot students. The latest Connetquot Teachers Association project has been partnering with the

Education & Assistance Corporation to provide healthy snacks, fruit drinks and bottled water for youngsters waiting for the parents at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip. Mr. Felicio and CTA Vice President Mr. Chris Dolce personally congratulated each of the winning students, and their families, for submitting quality essays. The kind words the students used to describe the impact Connetquot’s professional educators have had on their lives touched the hearts of the teachers being recognized. To celebrate the recognition, Senator Flanagan welcomed Ms. Holmes, a mother of three, to Albany to take part in a special Senate Women of Distinction ceremony. Ms. Holmes is the proud mother of two sons, Andrew and Thomas, who are diagnosed with autism. She has turned her advocacy efforts of her sons into a quest to help all children with developmental disabilities by serving as an Executive Assistant for the Developmental Disabilities Institute and the DDI Foundation. In this position, she has utilized her tireless work ethic and exceptional communication skills

to help the Foundation raise significant funds to support the mission of DDI to provide over 1,200 families with the services they need. In addition to her work at DDI, Ellen has also been an active member of Sachem Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) from 1995 to 2015. She also served as Corresponding Secretary for the Sachem SEPTA board from 1999-2000 to be a more effective advocate for the families that needed her assistance. Ellen’s selfless dedication to her two sons and countless others has inspired her daughter Christine to also dedicate herself to this cause by gaining her certification as a Special Education Teacher. “It is truly my honor to recognize Ellen for

all she has done for our community. Her ability to reach beyond her family to ensure that all children with special needs get the assistance they deserve is inspiring. Walters Elementary School (CEW) recently gathered in the school’s multi-purpose room to assemble some very special packages for some very special young patients. Over the past week, the students had decorated brightly colored tie-dyed socks and added non-slip bottoms for young patients being treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. The socks were placed

in individual bags with personal messages of comfort and good wishes. “It feels good to do good things for other people even if we can’t be with them,” said student Christian Bosco. “I really enjoyed making the socks and I hope our packages brighten their day.” “There are so many people dealing with this disease; whether it is themselves or a friend or family member,” said third grade teacher Justin Chichi. “We wanted to

Special Information Session Nassau Suffolk Water Commissioners’ Association (NSWCA), which is comprised of commissioners from 21 water districts across Long Island, recently held a special information session led by guest speakers Joseph C. Ferreira and Thomas J. Ruggiero, Partners at Hauppaugebased Albrecht, Viggiano, Zureck & Company, P.C. (AVZ) Certified Public Accountants, addressed the Commissioners on the topic of “NYS Comptroller Audits.” Hosted by Albertson Water District Commissioners Howard Abbondondelo, Richard Ockovic and Kenneth Vey, the session’s focus was on the constitutional and statutory objectives of auditing. “The difference between independent audits and comptroller audits includes scope and materiality,” stated Mr. Ferreira. “Being

thoroughly prepared includes operational and control considerations, especially internal operations, as well as compliance with New York State general municipal law and their own internal policies and procedures.” Mr. Ruggiero added, “There is a distinct need to have policies for traditional topics such as purchasing, investments, and fixed assets. In today’s world, IT, disaster recovery and business continuity must also have policies in place.” NSWCA President Raymond Averna of Massapequa Water District commented, ““The subsequent hands on Q&A session brought deeper discussion of several interrelated topics, including the Top 10 internal controls, and delved into important governance issues that concern all member water district commissioners. Mr. Ferreira and Mr. Ruggiero

( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

Celebrating 30 Years Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island based notfor-profit agency devoted to supporting the pursuit of an enviable life for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities, is proud to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the launch of its Children’s Services Program. “We’ve come a long way from the days of supporting 15 infants at their homes and 42 pre-school children at the Bay Shore Children’s Center,” said Noreen Clemens, Director of ACLD’s Children’s Services and an original member of the Children’s Services team. “But we know now as we knew then that it’s critically important to make sure children with developmental disabilities get off to a good start in their educational lives.” ACLD’s Children’s

Services moved into the Kramer Learning Center in Bay Shore in 1990; today, the Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore – which was added to the program’s offerings in 2014 – is the home of ACLD’s learning and recreation programs for children with autism, learning disabilities and other developmental disabilities. Offerings at the Center include a full-day and half-day preschool classes which serve 65 children with developmental disabilities, a Head Start program which serves ten children, and an after-school program for 37 schoolaged children. The Center is also home to a summer camp by the Great South Bay YMCA. ACLD enrolls children in the camp with the support of a grant from the New York State Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). In addition, the

Kramer Learning Center continues to operate, providing comprehensive diagnostic, educational and therapeutic services to 160 children with developmental disabilities, along with a Head Start program which serves 20 children. Fire Island Dance Festival Fire Island Dance Festival, one of the most talked-about summer events on Fire Island, will return to dazzle, excite and captivate audiences on July 15th-17th. Featuring some of the country’s top contemporary, modern and ballet companies, the festival is produced by and benefits Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. Again, for the festival’s 22nd edition, the dancers will perform outdoors against the picturesque backdrop of the Great South Bay in Fire Island

Pines. This can’t-miss cultural and charitable event has raised more than $4.3 million since its first installment in 1995 Through their generous support, Fire Island Dance Festival attendees have helped ensure that those in need throughout the New York area and in all 50 states receive lifesaving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. Known for its eclectic lineup, the festival will again present a mix of the most sought-after dance companies and emerging voices in the American dance scene. Taking Steps for a Cure Danielle Bursky from Plainview is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Danielle is living with Crohn’s disease which combined with ulcerative colitis are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. Danielle was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease at 9 years old. It took a few years for her to get on the right medication and

get her disease under control. Like many she has had many ups and downs. Danielle’s parents have always tried to keep things “normal” in her life and have never let her use my medical condition as a crutch. “I have been involved with CCFA for 5 years and love participating in the annual Take Steps Walk,” says Danielle. “I accepted the honor of being the 2016 Shining Star because I want to be a role model for that other nine-year-old girl. I want to show kids that Crohn’s shouldn’t hold you back; it should push you to do better things and be a better person.” The Take Steps for Crohn’s & Colitis Walk is the nation’s largest event

dedicated to finding cures and raising awareness for digestive diseases. Our Take Steps walks offer an incredible day for family, friends and the community to celebrate all of the efforts that have been put forth in raising funds towards our mission. Some may even have a different Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), a trick used by thieves to hide the true identity of stolen cars. Look for: 1. Strange marks or scratches on the dashboard VIN plate or sticker inside the driver’s side door. 2. Any car documents where the VIN looks

altered. 3. Multiple VINs on different pieces of paperwork. 4. The seller’s name not appearing on car title or registration. What to do: Shop online at a place like carfax. com.
