Connetquot High School recently welcomed motivational speaker Shadrack Boakye to speak to students enrolled in Read 180 classes, as they had recently completed reading his powerful book, “Unstoppable.” Shadrack is an official motivational speaker who

shares his story of kindness and compassion with others. Despite his early life as a Liberian refugee, Mr. Boakye has overcome many obstacles thrown in his path and has grown to become a very successful adult. In turn, he shares his life stories with students in hopes that they will learn

from his experiences. At the conclusion of his presentation, students were able to ask Mr. Boakye any questions they had on the book and hear his responses firsthand.

Golf Classic Set John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 32nd annual Golf Classic this year will honor the hospital’s senior leadership – President Kenneth Roberts, Senior Vice President for Administration Kevin Murray, and Vice President for Administration Wayne Shattes. The trio will receive the John T. Mather Founder’s Award for their combined 103 years of leadership, dedication and service to Mather Hospital and the communities it serves. The event, which benefits Nursing Education Programs at Mather, takes place Monday, June 5th, at the Port Jefferson Country Club. Shotgun starts are at 8 a.m. and 1:30 pm. Cocktails, buffet dinner, program, dessert and raffles are 6:30 to 8 pm. The golf entry fee is $600 per person, or $2,200 for a foursome. Cocktails and dinner only are $200 per person. On Saturday, May 13th, hundreds of Longwood community members attended the Middle Island Teachers Association (MITA) fourth book giveaway. To date, more than 90,000 books have been distributed to the community, placing Longwood in second place for distribution in New York State. Connnetquot Central School District’s Idle Hour Elementary School fourthand fifth-grade students in Patrick Brennan’s and Tracy McIntyre’s classes recently learned a little bit more about their local history when retired Idle Hour teacher and Oakdale Historical Society member Rhoda McManus visited

the school. Mrs. McManus’ visit to the school served as an introduction to the fourthand fifth-grade students upcoming “A Quest for Knowledge: The History of Oakdale” activity, in which the students will be visiting several of the historical landmarks around town and answering a series of

questions. “It is my hope that with these experiences the children will come away with a sense of pride in their community; that they will then continue to preserve its history, and share these experiences with future generations,” said Mrs. McManus.

Gold Award Winner On Tuesday, May 16th, Deputy Presiding Officer Rob Calarco welcomed and presented proclamations to the Patchogue-Medford High School Robotics Club Team 329 and to Girl Scout Antoinette Mavrotheris at the General Meeting of the Suffolk County

Legislature. Team 329 was recognized for being named Long Island Champions at the FIRST Robotics competition at Hofstra University and for competing in the World Championship Competition in St. Louis.

Antoinette Mavrotheris was recognized for receiving the Gold Star Award from the Girl Scouts for completing 80 hours of community service with the Patchogue-Medford Youth Community Center.

The Connetquot Central School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Louis A. Bonadonna as director for special education, effective this spring. For the past three years, Mr. Bonadonna has worked as the assistant director of pupil personnel services/

committee on special education chairperson for Garden City Public Schools. During his time in this position, he was responsible for creating programs and assisting in the development of specially designed instruction and curriculum, and supervision of the development of postsecondary transition plans and procedures. Additionally, Mr. Bonadonna was instrumental in supervising the district’s classified student population across seven school buildings spanning grades K-12. Prior to his position in Garden City, Mr. Bonadonna worked in a similar role in the Elmont Union Free School District, where his duties included supervising district special education programs and services, as well as

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heart-felt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61-year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD

Community Champion. LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People and Generation Found have changed the way addiction and recovery are viewed, discussed and supported and has started a movement. LICADD was honored to have Mr. Williams share his powerful story. Thank you to all who attended the 30th Angel Ball and to our friends and supporters. We encourage you to become acquainted with all that LICADD offers and see how you can become involved. It takes a village and we appreciate your interest, support and participation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and participates in public policy advocacy.

The Summer Swing Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

First Place Honors Two Longwood Elementary School students earned top honors at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair last month. Ridge Elementary School second-grade student Alexis Hollingsworth received first place for her project, titled “Is artificial food dye harmful to the growth of living things.” The objective of the project was to find out if food dye affects the growth of living organisms. After planting seeds in a cup, Alexis used tap water to water the plants. Once

the plants were established, she watered several plants with a small amount of red, yellow and blue dye, leaving one plant without dye. She quickly observed that the plant with no dye grew substantially faster and stronger than the plants with dye. “I told my mom that dye could affect people, and now I know for sure,” said Alexis. “Dye is found is so many foods, like snacks and candy. I want to be careful not to eat foods with added dye.” In addition to Alexis’s first place win, West Middle Island Elementary

At the moment, Ryan is unsure if he will pursue a career in law or government work, but many of his teachers think he has his eye set on the White House. Dawnwood Middle School’s April student of the month recipient, Aliea Ramlal, is a high honor roll student and a participant in various clubs including Youth for Humanity, Yearbook Club and the Multi-Media Club. Outside of school, Aliea is an active Girl Scout, a volunteer at the Middle Country Public Library and a volunteer at the Bristol Senior Community in Lake Grove. Her teachers rave about her enthusiasm, determination and ability

to effectively collaborate on group projects. Ilsaa Siddiqui is an eighth grade student at Selden Middle School and a high honor roll recipient every quarter this school year. Recognized not only as intelligent but as an extremely thoughtful and caring individual, Ilsaa is a member of National Junior Honor Society, Best Buddies and frequently gave up her lunch period to help the Pennies for Patient’s fundraiser. Her teachers all commonly identify Ilsaa as a driven young student who enjoys solving challenging questions and frequently pushes herself out of her comfort zone to achieve her goals.

The successful event allowed residents to safely dispose of unwanted prescriptions and medications and recycle old electronic

Additions to Makerspace Program

Students at OakdaleBohemia and Ronkonkoma middle schools in the Connetquot Central School District recently explored new additions to their makerspace programs in an effort to further enhance their STEM-related learning experiences. Both district middle schools recently started to tinker with Ozobot starter packs, which are tiny programmable robots serving as an introduction to dropping off paper to be early shredded. This year the Town of Brookhaven’s E-Waste drives successfully collected 14,916 pounds of electronic waste and shredded 13,580 pounds of paper products, and 26 boxes of unwanted prescriptions and medications were collected through the Pharmaceutical Drug Take Back Program.

Tree City USA At the May 11th Town Board Meeting, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board were presented with a flag from the Arbor Day Foundation that designates the Town of Brookhaven as a “Tree City USA.” This is the second consecutive year that the Town has received the award as a

result of the Supervisor’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative to plant 10,000 trees by 2020. The Tree City USA program was established in 1976 as a nationwide movement that provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their

public trees. Tree City USA status is achieved by meeting four core standards of sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) recently accepted a massive book donation - 16,000 books from Ocean State Job Lot’s Charitable Foundation, a discount retailer which recently opened its 124th store in Centereach. MCCSD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold, District Board of Education members and Jericho Elementary School students were on hand to accept the generous donation, ultimately aiding in the District’s literacy and reading programs. “Reading is a vital aspect of any young child’s development, providing an opportunity to learn new vocabulary, recognize sentence structure and keep students’ brains

active and engaged,” said Superintendent Dr. Gerold. “Middle Country is constantly providing students with opportunities to develop these imperative literary skills and thanks to our friends at Ocean State Job Lot’s Charitable Foundation we now have thousands of new options to offer our students.” The donation event was held at Jericho Elementary School, with the books soon to be distributed Districtwide throughout libraries and classrooms. Both District representatives and the Executive Director of the Ocean State Job Lot Charitable Foundation were on hand to discuss the importance of reading and developing strong literary skills in elementary school students. Robert Martinez,

Task Force Networking

On May 11th, the Brookhaven Town Disability Task Force held an event at Town Hall to bring together organizations that provide services to children with disabilities. The meeting was conducted by Task Force Chairwoman Marlene Patti and provided an opportunity for representatives to explain services offered by their organization. It also brought a greater sense of awareness of programs that are available for youth, while simultaneously allowing those who participated to expand their referral lists. By working with these organizations, the Task Force will continue to create partnerships to develop more opportunities for children in Brookhaven Town. On September 30th, 2014, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board passed resolution 2014-672 establishing

the Town of Brookhaven’s Disability Task Force. The mission of the Task Force is to provide the Town Board with information and recommendations. They will advise the Town in its continuing efforts to offer equal opportunities for residents with disabilities to be active members of our community. P a r t i c i p a t i n g organizations in the networking event included: Destination Accessibility Website Resources, Dew Drop In, Author and Researcher Dr. Andrea Libutti, EPIC Long Island: Epilepsy Foundation of Long Island, Long Island CCS & Friends, Long Island Whole Child Academy for Twice Exceptional Learning, Mental Health Wellness Association Children Case Management, Mill Neck Family of Organizations, Mosaic School and Garden, Music Academy for Special Learners, Noel Ruiz Theater, NYIT Vocational

The Lake Ronkonkoma Board Trustee Election Heritage Association Results: secured a William G. Milynn Augulis – 1,050 Pomeroy Foundation Lee Kennedy – 1,126

grant for the marker which was placed at the American Legion Post 155 on Church Street in Lake Ronkonkoma. The grant is part of a program to highlight the New York State Women’s Suffrage Centennial (1917-2017) and the people, places and events instrumental in women gaining the right to vote.

In addition to her efforts to win the vote, Lillian Brown Devere was a United States Navy Veteran and founder of the World War I Memorial Rock at the American Legion Post. She also founded the Lake Ronkonkoma Free Library and the Lake Ronkonkoma Theatrical Club.
