Competitors from Connetquot Central School District were congratulated after taking sixth place at the LEGO League Competition in which they built and programmed a LEGO robot to complete an obstacle course. County Water Authority as the Best Tasting Water on Long Island took place at the first-ever, cosponsored groundwater symposium on Friday, May 10th. The conference served as a culmination to the weeklong celebration of National Drinking Water Week and part of the ongoing effort to encourage residents to choose tap water because of its purity and great taste. The Long Island Water Conference is an association of more than 50 public water suppliers dedicated to providing a safe and reliable supply of public drinking water for over 3 million people in the Nassau/Suffolk area. Its members maintain over 1,000 supply wells, 10,800 miles of water mains and nearly 79,000 fire hydrants across the Island, guarding against contamination and ensuring quality service for a region more populous than 20 states.

Open For Summer Season Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared Fire Island open for business for the summer of 2013 season. He was joined by the Mayor of Ocean Beach, James Mallot, Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci, and members of “Revive FI”, the Fire Island grassroots business association, to provide updates on the state of Fire Island’s economic recovery for Summer 2013. Just over six months ago, Hurricane Sandy devastated the remote 32-mile-long barrier island leaving residents and businesses with the challenge of trying to restore normalcy before the summer months. The restoration effort was forced to begin immediately, as local businesses rely entirely upon tourism spending for its survival during a slim 12-week summer vacation season. This restoration effort included an unprecedented debris removal process coordinated across multiple municipalities, government agencies, and local community organizations.
Fire Island is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and accessible only by boardwalk or ferry. It offers a private close-to-home paradise to New Yorkers looking for a beach getaway while also serving as a barrier beach to protect the south shore of Long Island. “We are proud to declare Fire Island ‘Open for Business!’ We want to thank Governor Andrew Cuomo, the Army Corps of Engineers, FEMA, and all of the local towns, municipalities, and community groups that collaborated in an unprecedented fashion to complete a debris removal and rebuilding process that many believed would never be finished on time,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone “It has been 6 months of solid hard work but we are determined to be open for the summer season,” said Mayor of Ocean Beach, Jim Mallot. “I want to thank all of the first responders and emergency personnel who
led these communities through Hurricane Sandy, and I applaud the efforts of Fire Island’s residents and business owners as they recover from this storm,” said Islip Supervisor Tom Croci. “The scale of devastation that Fire Island endured is hard to comprehend, but it will be overcome. Fire Island is back and ready for summer.” “We are here to let people know that Fire Island is still the same magical place it was before Sandy came rolling through and your friends are waiting for you,” said Scott Hirsch from Revive FI. The Suffolk County IDA, who provided emergency sales tax relief for 10 Fire Island based businesses, contributed $20,000 to the ReviveFI advertising campaign. Suffolk IDA CEO/Executive Director Anthony Manetta stated, “The IDA is proud to lend our support to let the public know that Fire Island IS open for business”.

Long Island MacArthur Airport is once again ready for takeoff as the host of a 5K Run to benefit our Long Island veterans on Saturday, June 1st. This popular race/walk has provided runners with a unique backdrop on the first Saturday in June with a race course that includes portions of MacArthur Airport’s runways and taxiways. Last June, a recordbreaking number of runners - more than 2,000 strong - pounded the pavement despite inclement weather, and the event raised more than $100,000 in support of the Long Island 9-11 Veterans, a charitable organization that assists Long Island veterans returning from service in Iraq and Afghanistan while they make the strenuous transition from military to civilian life. Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci and the Town Board invite all to join us at MacArthur Airport to participate in a race/walk that continues to grow both on the airfield and in terms of community spirit. NBTY Helping Hands has generously announced plans to cover all costs for the Long Island 9-11 Veterans organization again this year, allowing 100 percent of the funds raised to go directly to Long Island veterans in need. Unlike most road races, the MacArthur Airport 5K Run for Veterans is unique for reasons other than
simply its airfield setting. Awards are handed out to the three male and female participants in 13 different age categories, and the event is also a kickoff of the Sayville Summer Series, which links together five different local runs as part of a larger event where competitors can earn cash prizes and awards. Race announcer Terry Bisogno, The Voice of Long Island, is the emcee for a day of patriotic entourage, community support and plenty of raffles and giveaways. Registered runners are also invited to attend a pre-race Pasta Party at the MacArthur Airport Holiday Inn between 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Check the Airport’s Twitter handle, @ LIMacArthur, for updates as we will continue to post information about the race in the days leading up to June 1 and from the event itself. The airport urges participants to file their tweets under the LIMA5K hashtag. What Would You Do... By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course. And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining
mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really. Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really? Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot? For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.
But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life. Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no? Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.
Federation of Organizations hosted a Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on Friday, May 3rd at the Huntington Hilton. The event served to honor senior volunteers from the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs and was well attended by over 300 guests. The day was celebrated with a gala luncheon and dancing. The Foster Grandparent Program connects local senior citizen volunteers with special needs children in schools, Head Start centers, preschools and other community locations. Currently, over 170 Foster Grandparents serve as mentors and tutors to over 2100 children daily throughout Suffolk County. Joseph Greco, a Kindergarten teacher at Woods Road Elementary School in North Babylon was there to share his
experience with the Foster Grandparent Program. He spoke about the accomplishments his Foster Grandparent has made in the classroom. “The Foster Grandparent Program, from my perspective, is incredibly important, relevant and needed, especially in consideration of the times in which we live” he said. Federation also sponsors the Senior Companion Program. This program allows active seniors the opportunity to help frail seniors who are homebound. Maria Leonelli and Loretta Weiners, who receive the services of the Senior Companion Program, spoke to the audience about how having a Senior Companion in their life has allowed them to remain living independently and how thankful they are that this program is available. Because of the tremendous success

Any Treasures Hidden In Your Garage?
On Friday, June 14th, the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook will present a new exhibition highlighting two of Long Island’s summer playgrounds. They are sun-drenched spectacles. Miles and miles of beaches and boardwalks jammed with smiling, tanned and half-dressed people of all ages. The mere mention of Coney Island or Jones Beach evokes summer itself. Coney Island and Jones Beach: Empires by the Sea will take visitors on a fun-filled ride through the history of these two landmarks, exploring the changing, complicated relationship between New Yorkers and their favorite seaside playgrounds. The exhibition will include a dazzling array of objects (including historic beachwear and amusement park artifacts), rare photographs, paintings, prints and archival film clips. Coney Island went
from an unknown strip of sand to the world’s most famous seaside resort in the 19th century. People began going there shortly after a shell-crushed road connected it to the rest of Brooklyn in 1829. But it gradually became rowdy entertainment for the masses, home to three major amusement parks, and the birthplace of the roller coaster and the hot dog. By 1920, accessible by the subway, Coney Island was dubbed the “Nickel Empire.” But not everyone was charmed by the spectacle. Jones Beach was different: “Flowers, lawns, shrubs greet you, instead of papers, lunch boxes and dirt. Nothing is crowded, the sidewalks are wide, the buildings are low and attractively designed. The beach is apparently endless.” Master builder Robert Moses planned Jones Beach as an antidote to what he regarded as the excesses of Coney Island. In addition
to forbidding carnival vendors and “honkey tonk,” Jones Beach employed uniformed attendants and enforced strict rules against undressing in cars and leaving litter on the boardwalk or beach. The entire park included beautifully-designed bathhouses and nauticalthemed trash receptacles. By the mid-1930s, Jones Beach welcomed over 100,000 visitors on its busiest summer days. The exhibition will explore these two famous spots not only in their heydays, but will also look at what has happened during their decline, resurrection, and redefinitions over the past several decades. Where some once thought the sun might be setting on these two historic beaches, millions still pack their bags every summer to go there and make new memories. The perfect summer exhibition, Coney Island and Jones Beach will give visitors a fun and energetic history of how
two iconic coastal areas became lasting people’s playgrounds. This exhibition is sponsored by Suffolk County, Astoria Federal Savings, Empire National Bank, Teachers Federal Credit Union and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature. Located at 1200 Route 25A in Stony Brook, the Long Island Museum is a Smithsonian Affiliate dedicated to American history and art with a Long Island connection. Golf Classic Honoree St. Joseph’s College will hold its 23rd Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 3rd at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2013 honoree is Martin Racanelli Jr., vice president and partner of Racanelli Construction Co. Inc. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Recently CBS’s 60 Minutes reported on the impact of the Robin Hood Foundation - the force behind the12-12-12 concert at Madison Square Garden, which raised $50 million to benefit victims of Hurricane Sandy. The Robin Hood has given a grant to the YMCA of Long Island to help Long Islanders who suffered devastation as a result of Sandy. The YMCA, an island-wide, cause-driven nonprofit, has earmarked the funds to help families affected by the storm attend afterschool care, participate in counseling, or attend summer camp. “The YMCA of Long Island is all about making an impact on the lives of Long Islanders,” says Anne N. Brigis, President and CEO, “So many children have developed fears as a result of the storm and families are financially burdened as the try to rebuild. Summer camp, counseling and afterschool services offer kids positive, nurturing and memorable experiences while giving parents peace of mind.” The Robin Hood Foundation’s mission is to “find, fund, and partner with programs that have proven they are… a consistent force for good in the lives of New Yorkers.” The YMCA of Long Island has met the foundation’s rigorous standards and will disperse funds from the Robin Hood Foundation to 30 families who have requested aid. “Long Islanders know all too well the physical and emotional destruction that Sandy left in its wake. We are honored that the Robin Hood Foundation recognizes the Y’s ability to make a difference,” says Brigis. “Every family we help is truly in need, and it’s our heart-felt privilege to assist them.” The YMCA of Long Island will be capturing the stories of some of the grantee families as part of documentary.

The Long Island Rail Road made its way to Bellport in 1882, and that enabled working people, some with their first paid vacations, to get away from the city’s heat and dust and relax; the Bay House was transformed into the Jewish Working Girls Society. Irish chambermaids spent the summer in service at the hotels, local boys caddied at the Golf Club and sailors were kept busy until September taking visitors for evening sails. The fashions of summer whites, bathing costumes and broad-brimmed straw hats depicted in photos and postcards from BBHS archives, allow viewers to imagine these summers of the past – and appreciate many of the same pleasures today. Tickets for the opening party on June 8th from 6 to 9 p.m. are $150 per person and include the Exhibition preview and the opening night Gala Party. Proceeds from this special event benefit the Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society, a non-profit local organization with the mission of preserving the rich history, heritage and beauty of our Long Island communities. A variety of lectures are scheduled in conjunction with this exhibition. Each lecture will be held at the BellportBrookhaven Historical Society, 12 Bell Street in Bellport, NY. The Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society (BBHS) has announced its summer 2013 exhibition, Bellport: Summer, 1900, a celebration of the summer style and social life — complete with grand hotels, summer houses, and picket fences — enjoyed at the turn of the century in this village along the Great South Bay on Long Island’s south shore. The exhibition opens to the public Thursday, June 13th and remains on view Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Saturday, August 31st, at the BBHS, 12 Bell Street, in Bellport. Admission is $5. A Gala Party will be held on June 8th and four lectures corresponding to the exhibition are scheduled over the month of June at the BBHS. Curated by designer and cultural historian Tricia Foley (http://www.triciafoley.com/) Bellport: Summer, 1900 presents a look at life in this seaside resort town at the turn of the last century through period photographs, paintings and objects from the BBHS collection depicting the village’s iconic summer style. The exhibition includes “Wish You Were Here!” -- a collection of photographs, including a scrapbook of images by local photographer Frances H. Toms -- that depict the bay, sailboats and white-shingled houses with wide porches that were popular subjects of the day. Also on view are photographs of the grand hotels – The Wyandotte, Hampton Hall, Bay House, The Goldthwaite — that attracted visitors from New York and Brooklyn. Families and guests made their way to “the cottages” every June to take up residence for “the season.” There were fairs and fetes, musicales and theatrical productions, croquet and cycling for Bellport’s seasonal society to enjoy. Sailing was Bellport’s great attraction, and launches lined up in the bay to carry visitors and residents to the

SNAP Launch
On April 23rd, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh was proud to attend the official launch of the Special Needs Ability Program (SNAP) at the Studio Grill in Selden. SNAP and the Selden Centereach Youth Association, officially partnered in serving the children of the community, a first for Suffolk County and has designed specific programs for the special needs families. Councilwoman Walsh expressed how thrilled she was to have the organization in her district. “I am delighted SNAP has a location in Suffolk County and excited
that it has established roots in Selden and Centereach. SNAP strengthens our ties as a community and allows us to better understand the special needs of our fellow residents by helping individuals to become active members in our community.” In its philosophy, SNAP believes it’s a child’s ability that sets them apart from their typical peers and that having a disability does not mean they cannot be viable members of society. They also believe that with proper training and public understanding, they can participate in a multitude of positions within the workforce, at social events
and in public speaking. Typically, SNAP works on a daily basis to create positions in the workforce, educates employers and assists employees in gaining and maintaining employment. SNAP also coordinates recreational and social events for families with special needs and educates the community about services that are available for the family. Department Honored
At the April 23rd Brookhaven Town Board meeting, Councilwoman Kathleen Walsh presented a certificate of appreciation to the members of the Selden Fire Department. Councilwoman Walsh said, “National Volunteer Week is dedicated to recognizing the efforts of men and woman who are committed to serving our community. I want
to especially thank the volunteers of the Selden Fire Department, whose daring efforts during the blizzard Nemo were true acts of devotion and heroism.” Councilwoman Walsh explained that during Nemo, they left their homes and their families in the worst weather conditions to rescue more than 80 people who were stranded
in their vehicles on Route 83 and brought them to the firehouse where they were able to contact their family members. “For this reason and for all the things they do year round, I honor the members of the Selden Fire Department for these efforts and the sacrificed they make every day,” said Councilwoman Walsh.

Individual Special Education Aide Tina Retenski knows she’s a healthy person because she does everything she’s supposed to for maintaining a healthy heart. Yet, she wanted to confirm her previously normal blood pressure readings while participating in the agency’s recognition of National Workplace Wellness Week, April 1st through 7th, by having her blood pressure taken.
Joining the national effort of healthy habits and physical activity initiatives, Ms. Retenski went to a Blood Pressure Screening event at Brookhaven Academic Center (BAC) where Brookhaven Technical Center (BTC) students in the Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program were readying for the public’s arrival. Teacher Denise Filingeri said, “LPN students are always eager to utilize
the skills they’ve learned. Being able to perform the service and communicate with participants is a very positive experience for them.” One minute after opening the screening session, LPN student Jay Dicecco and classmates Britteny Taylor of Eastport -South Manor CSD and Gabriela Giovinco of Middle Country CSD had a line of people waiting.
On Tuesday, April 9th, members of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School (OBMS) Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted a mentoring session for elementary students preparing a piece for the upcoming NYSSMA Solo and Ensemble Festival. Students from the Sycamore, Bosti, John Pearl, and Idle Hour elementary schools practiced performing their scales, solos, and sight reading for OBMS Tri-M students. In addition to gaining more experience performing for a new
audience, the elementary students interacted with OBMS students, met the middle school music teachers, and had the opportunity to see where their music classes will be held at OBMS. According to Mrs. Johnson, “The experience was enjoyable and rewarding for all ages!” Each spring the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) sponsors festivals across the state in which students have the opportunity to perform solos and small ensembles for an impartial judge. They listen to
each student perform a graded selection from the NYSSMA manual, and a short sight reading. NYSSMA is the state professional organization for music educators. Mrs. Johnson thanked the Tri-M members for working with the elementary students, as well as OBMS music teachers Ms. Theresa Rowden and Mr. BentleyGarfinkel, for making the afternoon session so enjoyable and rewarding for all the talented youngsters.
