onnetquot Central School District administrators and 13 former Connetquot High School student-athletes and coaches recently attended a ceremony for the induction of the newest members to the Connetquot Athletic Wall of Fame. The ceremony, followed by a brunch, honored 11 former Connetquot student-athletes and two former coaches for their outstanding athletic achievement during their time at Connetquot High School.

Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Varsity Softball Coach Ross Castaldo and the Lady Thunderbirds had quite a surprise for their tri-captain Marissa D’Arcangelis. D’Arcangelis’ boyfriend and Connetquot High School senior, AJ (Andrew) Serra has contacted Coach Castaldo a

Marissa and her fellow captains met with the other team captains and umpire before the game while the rest of the team helped unfurl a ten-foot banner between the second and third bases that read

“Marissa, Will You Go To Prom With Me?!” Upon hearing the crowd’s reaction, Marissa turned to find the surprise waiting for her. She said yes and the crowd, including district Superintendent Lynda G. Adams cheered on the happy couple. Marissa and her teammates eagerly await prom which is set for June 24th, 2015.

Her wisdom and support over the last two decades have helped many of the youth in her community. Trisha Ewald started the Blessings in a Backpack program in 2013. Her group collects donations to provide weekend meals to underprivileged children who are eligible for free or reduced lunch at school. Ms. Ewald oversees volunteers and is responsible for fundraising, shopping, packing the

backpacks and distribution to provide lunches for over 100 children each weekend. Steel Drum Band of the Boys and Girls Club of the Bellport Area was founded in 1999 as an alternative to drugs, violence and teen pregnancy. The Steel Drum Band has performed on Long Island and has traveled as far as Virginia Beach to entertain audiences. The members of the band are a dedicated group of young people who must maintain academic eligibility and practice twice a week to hone their craft.

On May 8th, the 35th Annual Youth Volunteer Awards was held to honor volunteers within each Council Districts who have gone above and beyond to serve young people within their communities. This year, the honorees from Council District 4 were Rosalee Adams, the Steel Drum Band of Bellport and Trisha Ewald. Connetquot Central School District Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently welcomed moms, grandmothers and even a few dads to the annual Mother’s Day Tea. The students served

cookies, drinks and other treats to their significant guests. The invited mother figures had the opportunity to listen to their children sing a few songs while they enjoyed their Mother’s Day Tea. Students had also

prepared speeches, songs and videos for their guests along with colorfully decorated placemats and cards. The event was a lovely celebration of the Mother’s Day holiday.

John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 30th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 1st, with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised nearly $3 million for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to James Danowski of Cullen & Danowski, LLP, for his exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of healthcare in our community. Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Ladies Varsity Softball team, the Lady Thunderbirds recently defeated Ward Melville High School with a score of 5-1. Nicole Schwartz’s third inning three-run

homerun put Connetquot ahead early in the game. Schwartz was also the winning pitcher for the T-Birds pitching a complete game with 6 strike out-outs against the opposing Patriots of Ward Melville High School.

Connetquot High School’s Varsity Softball team has an overall record of 14-4 in the League 1 standings. Coach Ross Castaldo and his team look forward to the upcoming season playoffs.

CULINARY FUN - On May 5th, the Gordon Heights Youth Culinary Program was held at the Saint Michael Community Center. The program was coordinated by the Suffolk County 6th Precinct Community Oriented Policing Enforcement (COPE) officers in collaboration with the Gordon Height Civic and Executive Chef Chris Richards. The program began in August of last year with only a few attendees, but within a month the numbers grew to an astonishing 35 plus participants per week.

Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Justyn Harrison, a kindergarten student at Charles E. Walters Elementary School, was recently named overall winner in this year’s Brookhaven National Laboratory Science Fair. Justyn’s science project titled, “Chelsea’s Favorite Treat,” was inspired by his nine-year-old dog, Chelsea. For his project, Justyn offered Chelsea different selections of dog treats. Based on his analysis,

Justyn determined Chelsea preferred cheese wraps. “The treats were either A, B, C or D,” said Justyn. “She liked the cheese wraps the best!” More than 500 science projects from 118 Suffolk County schools were entered into the 2015 Elementary School Science Fair. The Fair, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and coordinated by the Lab’s

Office of Educational Programs, was held at the Laboratory on May 2nd. Brookhaven scientists, engineers, technical staff, and teachers from local elementary schools judged the projects. In addition to Justyn’s first place win, West Middle Island third grade student Luke Katona received honorable mention for his project, “Deflate Gate.”

Youth In Government this tradition. The students were escorted by Town of Islip personnel and local Elks leaders through the Waste Energy Facility and the MacArthur Airport Fire and Rescue facility. At the Waste Energy Facility the students witnessed first-hand how trash is converted

into energy for tens of thousands of homes. At the airport, members of the Fire and Rescue team demonstrated how they respond to emergencies. The students concluded their visit with a question and answer session at Town Hall with Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

Sixteen high school seniors from underserved communities on Long Island who completed Stony Brook’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program celebrated their “graduation” from HOPE and are on their way to college. A ceremony took place at Stony Brook Medicine to honor their accomplishment on May 12th. The students are from the Brentwood, Longwood and Wyandanch school districts. Four students will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook University faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12 graders and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for some 140 promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities. During the 20142015 academic year, Stony Brook faculty and

community members instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, handson demonstrations and shadowing professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anatomical sciences, and respiratory care. “This is a special day for young people we are here to congratulate and support,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, Chief Executive Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital. “HOPE is much more than an afterschool program. Through our doctors, nurses and many other healthcare professionals, it teaches students life lessons and exposes them to the broad field of healthcare.” Each of the 16 students expressed how much they learned from the HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the “amazing” breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete

college. Completing the two years of HOPE inspired all four students who will attend Stony Brook University to major in a health scienceoriented field (three have decided Biology). One of those students, Dilsa Perez, of Longwood High School, has an interest in medicine and social work, inspired particularly by the work of physicians and nurses in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and OB/GYN Department. “Participating in HOPE made me understand I can achieve anything if I put my mind to it,” she said. “Seeing the doctors and nurses at Stony Brook in action also made me see first-hand the impact you can have on people’s lives if you work in the medical field.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include: SUNY Binghamton, Penn State, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Rochester, Suffolk County Community College, Mercy College and Molloy College.

Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Art Contest Winners The first annual eSchoolData Login Page Art Contest was a resounding success, with over two dozen entries received. The contest runs regionally in NY over the course of the school year to promote as much student participation as possible. School districts in Suffolk County were the latest to complete the contest and will be followed by eSchoolData districts in the Western New York region. The Northeast region was the first area scheduled and was completed in December of 2014 followed by districts in Nassau and Westchester Counties. Participating districts’ initial entries were accepted from February 2015 through April 2015. After careful consideration, the voting committee selected the First, Second and Third Place winners below: First Place - Rob Subtirelu (Connetquot School District) Second Place - Amanda Crowley (Babylon District) Third Place - Mia

Karlin-Cappello (East Hampton School District) The following students were awarded Honorable Mention: Jennifer Sanchez (Copiague School District), Hira Ali (Connetquot School District), Christina Crichlow (Brentwood School District), and Elizabeth Pitre (Copaigue School District). Contestants were required to submit works of art that focused on a specific theme relative to current educational topics. This year’s theme was STEM + Art, and challenged students to find how art is incorporated into Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Students were allowed to submit either a photograph or a scanned image of a drawing. The first place winner’s submission will appear on the eSchoolData login page as part of release 4.5 later this month and will remain until the next regional winner is announced. Recreation Program Sachem Community Youth Services provides a five week Summer Recreation Program for youth ages 5-12. Town Honorees On May 8th, Supervisor Ed Romaine honored recipients of the Town of Brookhaven’s Youth Bureau Volunteer Awards during the 35th annual ceremony at Town Hall. The awards recognize

the Town of Brookhaven Youth Board which is an advisory board to the Youth Bureau. During the ceremony, 26 volunteers received awards from the Supervisor and their Town Council representatives.

On Monday, April 29th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Fourth Annual Library Literacy Luau, a districtwide program sponsored by the librarians of the Connetquot School District in cooperation with the PTA. Held at Connetquot High School, the luau provided students with the unique opportunity to meet local authors and illustrators. Literacy-themed student artwork was on display for all to enjoy. Attendees visited the library’s table where Librarians Christina Mattessich and Nancy Seims provided literature on library services including museum passes and Live-study help. Children and their parents were happy to receive

“Pete the Cat” bags as well as color by numbers. This novel event, designed to celebrate the joy of reading, provided games and activities for participants with raffles and prizes. As the library commemorates its 40th anniversary, they continue their commitment to young patrons with innovative programs from “Baby’s Great Beginnings” to “Battle of the Books.” With spring quickly fading into summer and the days growing longer, our celebration continues. The upcoming Summer Newsletter is filled with a host of exciting programs for patrons of all ages. From Summer Reading Clubs, an incentive to read for pleasure and recreation, to Vacation Activity Kits created to

keep children entertained on long excursions, the library continues to offer children enjoyable and challenging endeavors. Tee Off For Teens The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Maidstone Club, East Hampton on Wednesday, June 3rd. Twenty–two foursomes will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. The Maidstone Club is a private country club on the Atlantic Ocean in the

village of East Hampton. Maidstone Club boasts a private beach, pool, tennis house and club house. The club was founded as a ninhole course in 1891 and expanded to eighteen holes in 1899. The golf course was originally designed by William H. Tucker and is one of the first 100 golf courses in the United States. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,250 or $4,000 for a foursome. Registration begins at

11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course. The day will end with a reception at 5:30 p.m., to be followed by dinner on the beach at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the TeeOff for Our Teens event will directly support the many evidence-based programs for teens that LICADD currently offers to the community. each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day, and the expanding need for services is staggering,” said LICADD Executive
