(SBPLI) are getting ready to swing the irons at the Sixth Annual SBPLI Golf Outing, presented by SCOPE Education Services, on Monday, June 27th. This year’s event, which benefits FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics programs on Long Island, is being held at Nissequogue Golf Club in St. James. Mary Anne Sadowski, Esq., Managing Partner of Hauppaugebased law firm, Ingerman Smith, LLP and longtime supporter of SBPLI, will be honored at the event. Ms. Sadowski has been a true friend of SBPLI, not only by providing pro bono legal services and financial assistance to the organization, but also by volunteering her time to support its programs. This year marks her 14th year as a judge for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC). She also insists on leading the Chairman’s Award Committee each year as she sees it as a privilege to communicate with students, many of

In her role as Managing Partner of Ingerman Smith, Ms. Sadowski represents the Firm’s school district clients in all general education, labor and commercial/ construction-related legal matters, including policy review;, employment issues; student matters; school board grievance and liability; construction bidding, proposals and contracts; and software licensing. She has extensive experience in all facets of fiscal management, commercial and construction issues, and provides assistance to school district clients through all stages of construction projects. Ms. Sadowski will join her fellow SBPLI supporters at the event, which begins with registration and
golfers’ breakfast at 10:30 a.m., followed by a shotgun start at 12 noon and a BBQ Lunch on the course. The day will conclude with a dinner and reception, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Registration costs $1,200 per foursome or $325 per golfer. For those who would like to attend only the cocktail reception and dinner, the cost is $125 per person. There are also presently several attractive sponsorship opportunities available to assist SBPLI and provide businesses and individuals with valued recognition. SBPLI strives to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. BALLROOM DANCE FUNDRAISER - Breakin’ Out Ballroom held its first-ever Ballroom Dance Fundraiser in support of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on Friday, April 22nd. The theme of the event was Autism Awareness, with décor and participants both adorned in blue, the nationally recognized color for the annual April recognition. Guests were invited to two hours of dancing and were treated to refreshments. They were also provided with the opportunity to bid on “Chinese Auction” items. The total of $320 in were donated directly to the camp’s efforts.

All too often sick, injured or abused animals die because their caretakers can’t afford to pay for the urgent care needed to save them. If the animals are surrendered to town shelters, their medical

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. was recently awarded a $10,000 Veterinary Assistance Grant from Banfield Foundation®. This grant will assist owners undergoing economic hardships keep their pets healthy and offset costs in emergency medical situations so they will not be forced to surrender or euthanize their beloved dogs and cats. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization striving to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. The all– volunteer, non-profit group cares for dogs from municipal shelters, and cats from shelters as well as off the streets before seeking approved adopters. In 2015, Last Hope placed 620 cats and 245 dogs in loving, responsible homes. “The Banfield Foundation® grant helps our rescue to be more proactive,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope, “We can now intervene in special needs cases with veterinary aid; and, hopefully, prevent people from making the heartbreaking decision to give up their pets, or worse, be forced to euthanize fourlegged family members because of financial distress.” Community outreach, including a Fix-AFeral program and free rabies vaccine clinics, is part of Last Hope’s mission, whereas assisting individuals with their owned pets occurs infrequently. “The generous Banfield Foundation® grant will enable us to expand our reach. Most of the donation money we work so hard to raise must be spent on the animals in our care. In the past we’ve been able to help a limited number of desperate, owned pets. Because of the Banfield Foundation®, Last Hope responded in two recent cases- “Nelly” a young Sheltie needing her cardiac ailment diagnosed, then a hole in her heart repaired surgically; and “Oreo”

CASSIDY playful female kitten On April 29th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Kevin LaValle celebrated Arbor Day by working with volunteers to plant 2,000 trees near the headwaters of the Carmans River in Middle Island. The land was recently acquired for open space by the Town of Brookhaven. During the event, Supervisor Romaine was presented with a plaque, sign and flag from the National Arbor Day Foundation, designating Brookhaven Town as a “Tree City USA.” Volunteers from STATE (Students Taking Action for
Tomorrow’s Environment), the Middle Country Green Teens, and students and parents from the Raynor Country Day School assisted in planting the trees. The property, where several structures had previously been located, was cleaned and cleared of debris by town personnel. Compost was added to the soil and mixed/tilled in by farmers from Fink’s Family Farm of Wading River to prepare the land for the tree planting. After all trees are planted, the property will be hydro-seeded with a native wildflower mix. This tree planting was
part of the Supervisor’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative. The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 tree seedlings by 2020. This is the same goal date for the Supervisor’s Green Energy and Sustainability initiative for Town facilities, a 5-year Capital Plan to achieve a 50% reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2020. The plan focuses on Town-owned Buildings and Facilities, Traffic Controls, Street Lights and Town Vehicles.

Assemblyman Al Graf honored Cadet Samantha Picco on West Point Day, when cadets from across the country represent the U.S. Military Academy in the Assembly Chamber. Prior to graduating with a degree in Kinesiology, Picco grew up in Lake Ronkonkoma, and attended Sachem North High School. “It is my privilege and honor to once again welcome Cadet Samantha Picco to West Point Day in the Assembly Chamber,” said Graf. “As a veteran of the U.S. Navy, it is with
great pride that I recognize her accomplishments upon the year of her graduation from West Point. She serves as a role model to the Sachem Community, her home town of Lake Ronkonkoma, the Towns of Islip and Brookhaven, Suffolk County and the State of New York.” The New York State Legislature holds the annual West Point Day to recognize America’s longest-operated military outpost and the brave leaders who risk their lives to protect America’s freedom. Founded in 1802,

Senator Boyle congratulated each of the honored teachers, by referring to them as among “… our best and brightest teachers, who deserve recognition for their dedication to our children.” CTA President Anthony Felicio, Jr., added, “I have known Charlie as a colleague, and friend, for 30 years. deserving of this honor than Charlie Trupia. His dedication to his profession is second to none. His enthusiasm, passion and caring attitude towards his students are his greatest strengths.” Trupia will retire in June after serving the Connetquot community for 30 years. “He will be sorely missed. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership. Career Opportunities Students at Longwood Junior High School recently attended the school’s Career Awareness Day to gain a broader perspective of the variety of careers that are currently available. The event delivered realworld experiences through creative interactive demonstrations in the fields of health, finance, business, education, automotive, engineering, and others. Approximately, 1,400 seventh and eighth grade students attended
the event where close to 50 presenters shared key topics about their professions including educational requirements, job outlook, skills, interests and abilities. Jerry Myler, Chairperson of the Counseling Department, hopes that students will see how decisions they make today can help shape their future career decisions. “Career and postsecondary awareness is vital for our students,” said Mr. Myler. “The focus

Special Recognition Good Shepherd Hospice, a member of Catholic Health Services, has been recognized by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) for its vigil volunteer program, which offers an innovative approach to caring for the dying. Vigil volunteers, dubbed Compassionate Shepherds, are specially trained to comfort the dying at Good Shepherd’s inpatient center in Port Jefferson. E-WASTE DRIVE HELD - On April 15th, Councilman Kevin LaValle met with students from Newfield High School and Centereach High School during each school’s E-Waste Drive. The students helped to collect thousands of pounds of old electronics to be recycled.
This program enables family members and friends to leave the bedside for a respite, knowing their loved ones are not alone. “The feedback we’ve received since the program began three years ago has been extremely positive,” said Chief Administrative Officer Mary Ellen Polit. “Our Compassionate Shepherds have added another level of support that Good Shepherd is able to provide to dying
people and their families and allows us to fulfill and extend our mission of compassionate care.” The recognition from HANYS is part of its “NYS Triple Aim” campaign, which focuses on how New York hospitals and health systems are finding new ways to improve population health, enhance the quality of patient care and reduce the cost of health care, despite fiscal restraints.

Special Delivery By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Several weeks ago, shortly after the passing of my “Pal,” my Grandpa, we discovered what appeared to be a small bird’s nest nestled under the awning in the backyard. Assuming it was just a collection of twigsin-progress, I gingerly climbed on top of a chair to peek inside, only to find three beautiful blue eggs, clearly from the likes of a robin. No one was certain how long it had been there, though obviously enough time for the mama bird to lay these eggs. Not wanting to disturb the carefully orchestrated set-up, we left everything as it was and waited – from a safe distance – to see if the mother would return. Well, return she did and, within a few days, a fourth egg appeared in the nest, as she guarded her stash, fleeing only briefly upon any human sightings.
Now, you may be wondering, what’s the big deal? It’s spring, ‘tis the season for the birds and the bees and all of nature to frolic and procreate. While this is true, it must be noted that, in the 55 years my grandparents resided in this house, there were most likely exactly zero nests successful built by any birds. This was due to the fact that my Grandpa, lovable as he was, did not care for the messy remnants of twigs and leaves that the birds tended to leave while in the “construction” stage of things. At the first sign of a nest-in-progress, out would come the broom, sweeping all of their hard work away in one fell swoop. But now, here they were – four, tiny, perfect Easter-looking eggs, ready to hatch at any moment with brand new life. We kept a watchful eye on them for weeks, until one day, out popped a baby, all pink and naked, flopped on the other three eggs, which were now
showing signs of beginning to crack as well. A few days later, four fuzzy little hatchlings resided in the nest, napping in a pile of soft, pulsating fur, eyes not quite open, occasionally opening their beaks in case food happened to be lurking nearby. As of this writing, the four are still happily cohabitating, the fuzz gradually beginning to be filled in with soft gray feathers, the eyes fully open and alert, the beaks ready and waiting for mama’s next meal delivery. According to most references, it may be as little as a week before these little chicks are ready to fly off on their own. And such is the circle of life… How wonderful to be able to witness it right in Grandma and Grandpa’s backyard, especially at this time. There are those who believe in signs – for those, I don’t think you could ask for a clearer indication that this special delivery was intended just for us, right here, right now.

Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each
year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added.
Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www.annualcreditreport. com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
