Food Bank Visit
Congressman Pete King visits Long Island Cares Food Bank at its corporate office in Hauppauge. Long Island Cares was founded by the late singersongwriter Harry Chapin in 1980. Its goals are to improve food security for families and inform the general public about the causes and consequences of hunger on Long Island. Among other things Long Island Cares distributes more than 8,000,000 pounds of food via more than 590 food
pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, senior nutrition sites and day care centers throughout Nassau and Suffolk. Long Island Cares also provides nutritional meals for many needy children in various after-school programs and works closely with veterans organizations to assist needy veterans, including delivering groceries to homebound, disabled veterans. Approximately 284,000 Long Island residents

More than 100 individuals from the Connetquot Central School District took part in this year’s Duffield Dash – a one-mile fun run and the 5K footrace around the neighborhood surrounding Helen B. Duffield Elementary School. “Our multiple sponsorships from local vendors and the hard work of the PTA made the Dash a fun and
successful experience for all involved,” said Helen B. Duffield Elementary School Principal Lisa Farrell. Throughout the event, volunteers of the Lakeland Fire Department were on hand and provided tours of several emergency response vehicles and spoke with attendees about the various equipment used to protect the residents. While the event was a great way for the
community to join together in fitness and fun, several individuals were presented with top awards for their finish times in the races. The top performers for the One-Mile Fun Run were third-grader DJ Hellberg and fourth-grade student Victoria Flynn. The male and female winners of the 5k race were community members Joshua Jastemski and Sarah Hansen, respectively.

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and members of the Town Council were presented with a $77,800 rebate check at the April 27th Town Board meeting for participating in the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program. The rebate is a result of the Town replacing 980 fluorescent lighting
fixtures with energy efficient LED lighting on the first floor of Town Hall. All together, the Town has upgraded a total of 2166 lighting fixtures at Town Hall with rebates totaling $183,746. All installations were handled by the Town Hall Engineering Department. The upgrade is part of Supervisor Romaine’s
“Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiative,” part of a 5-year Capital Plan to achieve a 50% reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2020. The plan focuses on Town-owned Buildings and Facilities, Traffic Controls, Street Lights and Town Vehicles.
New Zoning Code Rockhill Golf and Country Club in Manorville is the first private golf course to be rezoned Golf Course District (GCD), a new zoning code recently implemented by Brookhaven Town officials under the guidance and leadership of Councilman Dan Panico. The Town Board unanimously approved Rockhill’s zone change from A1 Residential to GCD at its April 27th Board Meeting. Councilman Panico worked closely with the
Town’s law department to craft a code that would serve to protect Brookhaven’s golf courses, both publicly and privately owned, from future development, and in doing so, also provided golf course owners with additional accessory uses than what was previously permitted. “By creating this code, we have protected the vistas, open spaces and commercial recreational opportunities that coincide with golf courses, as well as the character of the
communities where they exist,” said Councilman Panico. “This move eliminates the potential of seeing another golf course plowed under for an as of right housing development that could substantially burden school district taxpayers, while giving a golf course owner more as of right uses to keep them viable well into the future.” The Town previously rezoned two of its own courses at Mill Pond and Rolling Oaks.

More than 200 proud, smiling faces filled the Brookhaven Town Hall auditorium on May 5th for the 37th annual Youth Volunteer Awards. The awards recognize residents from each council district who help and assist young people, whether they are individual adults, service groups or young people themselves. The event
was organized by the Brookhaven Youth Board and Youth Bureau. The Youth Board serves as an advisory board to the Youth Bureau. The Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s mission is to support and encourage the moral, physical, mental and social well-being of youth in Brookhaven Town. This is accomplished
by providing services, programs and counseling for young people up to 21 years of age, while also monitoring and providing oversight for several youth agencies and programs that receive funding through Brookhaven Town. Brushing Up on Safety “During the event, the children of the community had their bicycle helmets checked for proper size, and had their tire pressure measured,” said Linda Tabatchnik, retired Connetquot educator and CFAC volunteer. “Additionally, the students were able to ride their bicycles through an obstacle course with
turns and stops, and all participants received bicycle safety literature, activity booklets, reflective armbands and collars.” The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office provided the bike rodeo clinic to teach children real world skills necessary to ride bicycles safely. Close to 75 children took part in this fun event.

After finding herself immediately awed by the incredible energy and enthusiasm of the students, mentors and volunteers, Dr. Greenwald was hooked and opted to even volunteer to judge at the FIRST Robotics Competition Championships. In 2007, she signed on as Judge Advisor for the SBPLI Long Island Regional in 2003 and has assumed that role ever since. Dr. Greenwald is also instrumental in coordinating the annual Fred Breithut Scholarship, which is presented to an incoming Farmingdale College student each year. In her dual roles as Dean of International Education and Programs and Senior International Officer at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald is tasked with the internationalization of the campus and with creating a globally competent student body that understands the interconnectedness of technology, applied science, business, culture and society on an international scale. Over the past few years, Dr. Greenwald has been forging longterm partnerships with educational institutions, governmental agencies and non-governmental organizations in South America, Asia, Europe and the Caribbean in an effort to support, negotiate and manage a variety of international programs. In recognition of her work, Dr. Greenwald was presented with the William H. Fulbright International Administrators Award in 2015, which afforded her the opportunity to travel to France to develop bilateral programs of educational exchange between France and the United States. Throughout her nearly 20year tenure at Farmingdale College, Dr. Greenwald has served as Dean of the School of Business, as

Feed the Mermaids Coney Island USA, the non-profit multiarts organization whose programming includes some of New York City’s most unique and beloved events, has announced its “Feed the Mermaids” campaign to help fund the upcoming 35th annual Mermaid Parade, taking place on June 17th. This year’s festivities will be
presided over by Queen Mermaid Deborah Harry and King Neptune Chris Stein of Blondie. A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation’s largest art parade and the official kickoff to summer in New York City. A celebration of the ancient mythology of the summer solstice mixed
with seaside honky-tonk rituals, the Mermaid Parade showcases thousands of diverse and creative marchers cheered on by hundreds of thousands of eager fans. People come from all over the five boroughs and beyond, opening the summer season with incredible art, entrepreneurial spirit, and community pride.
Arbor Day at the Arbors were able to share their colorful drawings and posters illustrating the beauty of the spring season, and placed beautiful flowers into pots with their Arbors’ friends. “Each year, the school comes up with a theme connected to academics, social-emotional learning and dignity for all students,”
said Donna Leopardi, youth and family services coordinator at John Pearl Elementary School. “The themes are integrated into the children’s everyday experience, and this year’s theme of ‘Hand in Hand Across Our Land’ has been applied to districtwide initiatives.”

Raising Awareness Staff and student volunteers at OakdaleBohemia Middle School in the Connetquot Central School District recently joined together to combat diabetes during a schoolwide Juvenile Diabetes Research fundraiser. As part of the initiative, school nurse Gail O’Connor
conducted an interactive video presentation during gym classes in an effort to speak with the students about the disease, and explain how students and the school community could help fund research. Several OBMS students who have juvenile diabetes spoke to their classmates about how the disease
affects their lives, and how important it is to fund the research to provide relief and a cure. After learning more about the topic, the students were then asked to help raise money by selling paper sneakers, and taking part in a communitywide walk event which will take place later this May.

Law Day Longwood High School Moot Court Club students were recently named semi-finalists in both the 28th Annual Moot Court Tournament, held at Plainview High School and the 39th annual Civil Law Moot Court Competition, held at Northport High School.
The club competed against hundreds of schools from across Long Island, earning third place awards in each of the two tournaments. The competitions host approximately 24 teams comprised of one lead attorney, one witness, and one legal researcher or
second attorney. There are three-four rounds with the top scores progressing to the quarter-finals, semifinals and the final round. This annual event is part of an ongoing partnership with the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the New York State Bar Association.

Building Futures Scott Erath’s Amityville Company Wm. Erath & Son, Inc. has helped build students’ futures for nearly a decade by supporting the construction technology program at Suffolk County Community College with student internships, jobs and hardware. Erath awarded two students - his eighth such award, that now totals more than $30,000 - with laptop computers preloaded with construction industry
software at a ceremony on May 3rd. Erath said he gives the awards because he loves to give back and often hires students from Suffolk. Patricia Filbert of Shirley and Jennifer Navarro of Central Islip were awarded the laptops by Erath that are worth nearly $2,000. “Industry partnership with higher education is a win-win situation,” said Suffolk County Community College Academic Chair of
Science and Engineering Pete Maritato. “Industry partners have a pipeline to employees that are prepared and ready to work on their first day and our educational programs benefit from industry feedback allowing the alignment of courses to industries’ needs and providing ‘real-life’ work experience for students.”

Staying Power I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.

(NAPSA)-Learn how to participate in regular physical activity and eat healthier from “The World Around You,” a publication Fifteen high school seniors from the Brentwood, Longwood, and Wyandanch school districts celebrated their “graduation” from Stony Brook Medicine’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program at a ceremony on May 9th, 2017, in the Stony Brook University Health Sciences Tower. Out of the 15, seven of the graduates – a record number from the HOPE program – will be staying at Stony Brook University and entering as freshmen in the fall to continue striving towards their aspirations. Others in the HOPE graduating class will attend New York University, Binghamton University, St. John’s University, St. Joseph’s College, and Suffolk County Community College. Since its inception in 2005, HOPE has helped open new avenues for hundreds of promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities. Under the mentorship of Stony
Brook faculty, the twoyear program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th students and preps them for future careers in the health industry. “The HOPE Program also teaches life lessons that will help the students as they follow their dreams into college and beyond,” said Yvonne Spreckels, Director of Community Relations and Director of the HOPE Program at Stony Brook University Hospital. “They have learned CPR and can save a life. They’ve also learned public speaking, interviewing, and critical thinking skills to help them successfully compete in a college setting and in the marketplace.” During the 2016-2017 academic year, faculty instructed students with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing clinical professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as nursing, cardiology, anesthesiology, and respiratory care. “It was an amazing opportunity to have been
given and I’m extremely grateful that I got to experience the medical field in such a direct and hands-on way,” said Brooke Alleyne from Longwood, who is one of the seven that will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall. At this year’s ceremony, the students expressed how much they learned from HOPE, frequently citing the thrill of shadowing doctors, seeing medical technology in action, learning from nurses about patient care, and the amazing breadth of the healthcare field – one that they anticipate holds many opportunities for them after they complete college. “HOPE was two full years of fun and learning,” said Kevin Fiallos from Brentwood, who will be attending Suffolk Community College. “It influenced me to study what I wanted and motivated me to pursue another career as well. This program will definitely be one of my precious memories.”

Lessons in Recycling Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School first-graders recently learned about recycling and the benefits such actions have on the world during a recent visit from Recycling Educator Danielle Wynn from the Islip Town Department of
Environmental Control. Ms. Wynn’s presentation included a recycling film and distribution of ageappropriate curriculum to be used by teachers with their classes. Additionally, she demonstrated how students could make their own paper by using scraps, water, food coloring, glitter
and a blender Before concluding her visit to Bosti Elementary, Ms. Wynn invited the students, their parents and teachers to visit the Town of Islip recycling and compost sites to see firsthand how trash can become fuel for energy.
