n Monday, May 5th, a celebration was held at the Coram Elementary School for coming in second place in the LI Cares Food Drive Contest. The school collected over 26,000 pounds of food to donate to food pantries throughout Long Island. The students and faculty of Coram Elementary, with support from parents and the PTA, took part in the contest in an attempt to win the grand prize - a visit from celebrity Nick Cannon.

The annual May 1st tradition of the Community Garden Blessing at St. Joseph the Worker was continued under cloudy skies, but with warm hearts. As done in past years, Father John Millitt lead the event by beginning with a prayer around the peace pole followed by a procession through the pergola into the center of the garden where the ceremonial blessing took place. The garden is located on Naragansett Avenue in East Patchogue. “I’m happy to see the community join together

to create this beautiful garden every year,” said Supervisor Romaine. “The blessing has become such a great tradition here in East Patchogue and a sure sign that spring is here and summer is just around the corner.” “The garden blessing is a wonderful and hopeful event that indicates the coming of the growing season. There are multiple benefits to community gardens; they foster the connection of community members by bringing people together from a wide variety of backgrounds and

the best part is participants get to grow and eat healthy food. It’s been my pleasure to attend these events through the years,” stated Connie Kepert. Catherine Andrejack from the Parish Social Ministry Coordinator at St. Joseph the Worker Church helped lead the shared blessing, “Bless all present and the seeds planted, may the soil be fertile and the harvest be bountiful. May we grow seeds of peace, unity and goodwill on this holy ground and spread throughout our community.”

Second Place Celebration On Monday, May 5th, Councilwomen Connie Kepert and Jane Bonner attended a celebration where they congratulated Coram Elementary School on coming in second place in the LI Cares Food Drive Contest by collecting over 26,000 pounds of food to donate to food pantries throughout Long Island. The students and faculty of Coram Elementary, with support from parents and the PTA, took part in the contest

in an attempt to win the grand prize - a visit from celebrity Nick Cannon - who would be principal for the day for the winning school. Coram collected a total of 26,060 pounds of food, just 672 pounds short of the winning school. However, much to the surprise of the students, Coram Elementary Principal Vaughn Denton announced at the celebration that the school would be visited by Cassadee Pope, the winner of season four of the popular

On March 6th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilwoman Connie Kepert, along with the Brookhaven Town Board, presented a proclamation to Joe Lecci of Lifeline Mediation for his years of service to the youth of the community. Joe began as a teacher in the Longwood School District and later became one of Longwood’s youngest Assistant Principals in 1974. Joe was ordained as a Christian

Minister in 1984, and he and his wife Linda became founders of the Church on the Hill, where they have ministered for 29 years. Joe is also the founder of Middle Island Caring for Kids Day Care and Learning Center, Blessings R’Us Community Outreach Pantry, 3 On 3, which is a mentoring and counseling program that works with PAL at Longwood High School, and the Lifeline Mediation Center, a notfor-profit organization

that provides mediation, mentoring, tutoring, shortterm crisis counseling, job assistance, and marital reconciliation counseling. “Joe is someone who is always there to lend a helping hand to those in need. As a teacher, assistant principal, and minister he has dedicated his life to the betterment of the community’s youth,” said Councilwoman Connie Kepert. “I was more than happy to congratulate him for this prestigious honor.”

Nicole Bustamante, a Stony Brook University senior majoring in Health Sciences with a concentration in Public Health and a minor in Women’s and Gender Studies, at has been selected to participate in the prestigious Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX), a year-long, federallyfunded fellowship to study and work in Germany. Ms. Bustamante, a Tappan, New York native, was selected as one of 75 participants for this unique fellowship program. Since 1984, approximately 1,700 Americans have been awarded this opportunity to gain cultural, academic, and practical work experience in Germany. Bustamante will be participating in the 31st year of the CBYX program. While in Germany, Ms. Bustamante will attend a two-month intensive German language course, study at a German university or professional school for four months, and complete a five-month internship with a German company in her career field (Public Health). Participants are placed throughout Germany and have the opportunity to learn about everyday German life from a variety of perspectives. “Nicole Bustamante is a shining example of the impact experiences outside of class can have on a student’s career trajectory,” said Marianna Savoca, Director of the Career Center, Stony Brook University. “Her years at Stony Brook have been filled with involvement in student organizations, like the National Residence Hall

The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided

We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Culinary Competition Competitors from 13 Nassau and Suffolk high schools gathered at Suffolk County Community College’s Culinary Arts Center in Riverhead on May 6th to compete for $5,000 in Suffolk County Community College culinary scholarships in the SYSCO Long Island High School Culinary Arts Competition. The student’s displayed their culinary skills in the dishes that were prepared from a mystery basket of ingredients including a bone-in chicken, sweet potatoes, green squash and sundried tomatoes. Competitors were given one-and-a-half hours to complete two identical plates.

Danny Insogna from HB Ward High School in Riverhead took first place and the $4,000 SYSCO sponsored scholarship to Suffolk County Community College’s culinary arts program with his dish of pan roasted chicken with a mushroom cream sauce, sautéed vegetables and zucchini, and a sweet potato puree. Second Place and a $1,000 Sysco sponsored scholarship went to Mathew Kollmeier from Wilson Tech School in Dix Hills with his winning dish of sautéed breast of chicken with rosemary with a beurre blanc sauce, sautéed vegetables and mashed sweet potatoes. Stony Brook University has been designated a Tree Campus USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in recognition of the university’s dedication to campus healthy forestry management, sustainability and e n v i r o n m e n t a l stewardship. SBU earned its recognition through the implementation of five core standards that promote the health of trees and student involvement to improve their forests. The University met the standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee that developed a plan, allotting annual expenditures and brought in community members in the observance of Arbor Day. By introducing a Growing Red Days event last summer, Stony Brook was able to attract students to beautify the campus while teaching them important planting methodology. Last

LaValle to campus to join the University’s Sustainability program as they planted native trees provided by the Department of Environmental Conservation in the North Entrance Meadow as part of a restoration project to replace trees downed by Superstorm Sandy. “These goals and standards helped shape and define the campus’ vision to foster a healthy, safe and beautiful tree population,” said President Stanley. “These initiatives bring together members of the campus community, and inspire them to become more involved throughout the academic year. NIGHT AT THE RACES - The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation held another winning event, Night At The Races, raising more than $65,000 to benefit its cardiac services.
