Life’s WORC’s Family Center for Autism Announces Scholarship Program

Life’s WORC (www. lifesworc.org), a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and autism through its residential, community and trust services, which this year is celebrating its 50th anniversary – Celebrate 50! - wants Long Island, Queens and Manhattan

residents to know that its Family Center for Autism in Garden City, NY offers scholarships to help those who are financiallychallenged to gain access to its wide range of programs. In addition to its services, which include Behavioral Analysis Services, Family Support Services, and School-based Services, the Center offers art camps, sports and fitness, music

and movement, scient and tech, salon and spa, and vocational programs. Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism’s Senior Director Nicky Faranda noted that, “Through the generosity of private donors, we are able to offer those in need scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,500 to pay for any of our program classes. To date, we have raised

almost $200,000 which has enabled children through adults to participate in programs designed to build skills in specific areas, while encouraging socialization, recreation and the development of valuable life skills.” To date, the Life’s WORC Family Center for Autism has awarded over 239 scholarships valued at $245,589 for

individuals with autism. The scholarship program, which was first introduced in 2015, was created when it became clear that there were many in the community who simply did not have the additional financial resources to pay for the Center’s programs despite the fees being kept to a minimum. Today, in light of the economic impacts of the

COVID-19 pandemic, and the increasing number of families experiencing financial hardships, the scholarship program is even more critical. Sachem High School East Hosts Museum Walk The Sachem High School East Diversity Club recently held a museum walk with socially distant exhibits featuring information and activities from various cultures around the world. The museum exhibits created by the club’s outstanding effort featured

countries including China, Ireland, Italy, Malta, Nigeria, Pakistan, Portugal and Taiwan. Among the activities on the museum walk were Chinese yo-yo and Irish step-dancing lessons, as well as games from each culture that students could play at each exhibit.

my students. They learned many carpentry and basic framing skills. The framing procedure they used to make the boxes is the same for fabricating interior or exterior residential walls. And, they used their newfound skills to benefit veterans and their families.”

As students passed in the halls throughout the day, they enjoyed live music from a one-string guitar native to East Asia and stopped by exhibits to learn about cuisines, holidays and other fun facts about world cultures.

Suffolk Community College Board Freezes Tuition for Second Consecutive Year from 2020-21. Additionally, fees will also remain flat or in some cases be reduced. “By freezing tuition and fees, we are not only prioritizing students, but working to ensure cost is not a barrier to receiving a quality and affordable education,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone in reaction to the Board’s vote. “Facing unprecedented pandemic-driven revenue losses we are committed to remain the affordable, high quality, accessible resource for Suffolk residents that we have always been,” said Suffolk County Community

College Board of Trustees Chair E. Christopher Murray. We know many are unexpectedly out of work and others are looking for convenient, close-tohome options to pursue their college education. Suffolk County Community College is and will continue to be here for them,” Murray said. Murray said the College faced a more than $2.5 million budget hole resulting from an enrollment decline and the resulting loss of tuition, and pandemic driven costs and reductions in state aid. College Board of Trustees

Budget and Finance Chair Kevin M. O’Connor said sound fiscal management combined with belttightening initiatives, as well as staff reductions through attrition, not filling vacant lines, reconfiguring course sections to be more efficient and the College’s workers who voluntarily agreed to wage and benefit reductions helped ensure that Suffolk County Community College will continue to be an affordable, premier provider of higher education and workforce training. “Freezing tuition and reducing fees are tangible

manifestations of the trustees’ and our county partner’s commitment to our most important mission, the futures of our students,” said Jim Morgo, vice chair of the Board of Trustees. “The COVID-19 pandemic has hit Suffolk students particularly hard,” O’Connor said. “The Board of Trustees recognizes that we cannot ask our students and their families to shoulder a greater share of the burden during this tough time. Suffolk County Community College is the most affordable, accessible option to get a great

education – and the Board intends to keep it that way.” “Suffolk County Community College is a beacon of opportunity for many students who have few options when it comes to higher education” said Suffolk County Community College Interim President Louis Petrizzo. “By their actions today, our Board has ensured that a door to opportunity and advancement remains open and affordable for thousands of students.” Suffolk County Community College tuition is $2,735 per semester for Suffolk County residents.

For the second consecutive year, Suffolk County Community College’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously to freeze tuition at the State University of New York’s largest community college, citing the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and strain it has put on students, their families, and finances. The Board adopted a $208 million College operating budget at its monthly meeting for the 2021-22 academic year that includes no tuition increase and represents a $5 million reduction in expenditures

You can expect to ﬁnd beautiful items for sale here, such as clothing (some still with tags on them), household goods, and furniture. They only accept very gently used items and everything is cleaned and prepared for sale by a team of dedicated volunteers (the boutique is operated by volunteers only)! The selﬂess efforts of their volunteers truly makes the store feel warm and inviting. After rent and utilities are paid, all the rest of the proceeds go directly to the organization, which helps those in need. In addition to that, the boutique makes many homeless individuals feel loved and cared for by giving them items of clothing free of charge and allowing them to use their bathroom when needed. Hope House Ministries is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. In 2013, the founder of Hope House Ministries approached long-time supporters of this organization, Barbara and Arti, with an idea of a retail space that could bring in needed funds for Little Portion Frirary, a home which houses 65 young men in recovery of drug and alcohol addiction that is ran by Hope House Ministries. The hope was that the proceeds that would potentially be brought in from a retail space could pay for these young men’s college classes, food, utilities and transportation costs. Some years later, the perfect location for a store was found and they decided to open up a beautiful boutique there. Since their organization is all about second chances, they called it Hope

Work To Protect Montauk Point Lighthouse From Slipping Into Ocean Will Soon Begin LI’s Montauk Point Lighthouse Was New York’s FIRST Lighthouse & Is On National Historic Landmark Listing & Adjacent To Prized State Park & Museum First Constructed In 1796, The Site Has Become Dangerous For Visitors To The East End & Could Have Easily Been Lost To The Atlantic Ocean Without Fed Funds Citing mere feet to go before potentially being lost to the Atlantic Ocean, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer recently announced, after a call with the Army Corps of Engineers, that work to protect the Montauk Point Lighthouse will officially begin in May. Schumer, said starting in May is critical to protecting the historic structure. The lighthouse, a 1796 project

propelled by George Washington, once stood hundreds of feet from the Atlantic coast, but over time, it has inched closer and closer to the water’s edge, where it now stands in peril. “We have come a long way since 1796,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “However, so has the historic Montauk Point

Lighthouse, slipping ever closer to the Atlantic’s waters, but with fed funds en route and construction to start, we will restore the shoreline protections needed to keep this beacon of Long Island pride and tourism shining for years to come.” As reported by Newsday, H&L Contracting of Bay Shore was awarded the

contract for the project. The plan will remove and reuse existing five and ten-ton armor stones and add additional ones along the shore to protect the lighthouse. The project will also help stabilize the slope of where the lighthouse stands with terracing and vegetation installation.
