Congressional Art Winner On Friday, April 29th, Longwood High School junior Greg McGauvran was named the 2016 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” As part of his award, Greg received two round trip airline tickets to Washington where he will join other winners, from across the country, at a special recognition ceremony. Additionally,

Greg’s winning artwork will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year. Hosted by Congressman Lee Zeldin, the competition raises awareness of the importance of art programs in our schools and recognizes and celebrates the creativity and diversity of our art students. Congressman Zeldin said, “I would like to offer my congratulations to Gregory McGauvran, the artist of ‘American Life,’ and winner of the

2016 Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District. I would also like to thank all of the high school students who participated in this year’s art contest. A Buddy for Buddy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Readers have been writing in lately, inquiring as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing, my latest exploits… So I’m here, as requested, to fill you all in on my comings and goings – well, as much as one can come and go in the confines of a one-gallon aquarium, but you know… The latest bit of exciting news – potentially, anyway – is my Human’s impending purchase of a friend for me! Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to

complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it

goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. On April 13th, the Brookhaven Youth Bureau teamed-up with the Highway Department’s Division of Traffic Safety to host the most well attended Teen Distracted Driving Program in the Town’s history. The goal of the program is to make our roadways safer and prevent bad habits before they begin. Approximately 150 new drivers, parents and guardians received critical information outlining just how dreadful driving while impaired and distracted

can be. Nationwide, motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of death in young people between the ages of 16 and 24, and Suffolk County has the highest teen fatality rate in New York State. According to research conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, distraction was a factor in nearly six out of ten moderate to severe teen crashes. “Video evidence from our recent study on teen distracted driving shows the problem

is much worse than we thought,” said Robert Sinclair, manager of media relations for AAA Northeast. “Our research found the most common forms of distraction to be cell phone use, looking at someone in the vehicle, looking at something outside the vehicle, singing, grooming, and reaching for an object. We hope knowledge of these dangerous situations can be used to help teen drivers become safer behind the wheel,” said Sinclair.

On Friday, April 29th Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted his second annual art reception, where he announced Gregory McGauvran, a high school student at Longwood High School, as the 2016 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” In attendance were the seven finalists and their art teachers and families, Artspace curator Tracy Todd-Hunter, and local artists who served as

judges. The seven finalists include Justin Fren of Patchogue-Medford High School, Alexis Nappi of Patchogue-Medford High School, Samantha Braband of Patchogue-Medford high School, Gregory McGauvran of Longwood High School, Alexandria Pepper of Smithtown Christian School, Austin Sala of Smithtown Christian School and Amanda Stanis of East Hampton High School. The House of Representatives hosts a

nationwide high school art competition every spring to raise awareness of the importance of art programs in our schools, and to recognize and celebrate the creativity and diversity of our art students. The winning artwork for each congressional district is displayed in the United States Capitol for one year. The winner and a guest will receive a flight to Washington, DC to see their artwork on display in the U.S. Capitol building courtesy of Southwest Airlines.

On April 30th, Supervisor Ed Romaine attended the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony for Alex Peguero from Troop 229 of Selden. The event was held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Centereach. In order to become an Eagle Scout - the highest rank in scouting

- a scout must first work his way through all previous Boy Scout ranks while completing certain requirements such as earning required merit badges, holding a leadership position within the troop and completing a community service project. For his community

project, Alex created a veterans memorial at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Centereach. His project included a walkway, a flower bed and a cultured stoned memorial stand with a plaque dedicated to all past, present, and future veterans.

Language Students Welcomed used multi-media materials and demonstrated how learning another language can be useful and fun. The goal of this collaboration was to enrich the 5th graders understanding of the culture, geography and worldwide use of the French language. C-Quest is a districtwide enrichment program in the Connetquot Central

School District dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of students in 4th and 5th grades. Over the course of C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages program including French, Spanish, Italian and German languages and culture.

Operation Safe Stop On Thursday, April 21st, state and local officials, bus transportation representatives and the Suffolk County Police and Sheriff Departments joined Longwood School District officials to launch an annual statewide initiative to stop drivers from passing stopped school buses. “The illegal passing of stopped school buses occurs more than 50,000 times per day in New York State, presenting a significant risk to the 2.3 million children who ride buses to school each day,”

said Longwood School District Transportation Coordinator Gale Winsper. “When parents send their child to school, they should not fear for their safety due to another motorist’s carelessness. We urge drivers to stop when the bus has its red lights flashing; meaning students are boarding or disembarking school buses.” Operation Safe Stop is a statewide campaign to educate motorists about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing. The

program seeks to promote school bus safety through education and strict enforcement efforts. The statewide initiative is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies.

is an American Heart Association program which encourages healthier living, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke. The program is designed to promote the value of physical activity in a school-wide cooperative effort to stay healthy and

Anniversary Celebration

On Saturday, April 30th, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker joined the Davis Town Meeting House Society to celebrate its 5th Anniversary. The celebration included historical reenactments by local volunteers including a 21 gun salute and a presentation of historical costumes by society members. Remarks by Davis Town Meeting House Society President Maryanne Douglas welcomed Davis family members including Lester H. Davis III and his family. Government officials and community leaders

including, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker, New York State Assemblyman Steve Englebright, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine, Coram Civic Association President Erma Gluck and Middle Island Civic Association President Gail LynchBailey gave tribute to the efforts made to preserve the historical home. The Davis Meeting House, built in 1750, was used as Brookhaven Town’s government seat from 1790 to 1884. In 1999 Lester H. Davis III, sold the house

and land to the Town of Brookhaven. He and his family, who currently live out of state, were present for the ceremonies. Mr. Davis was the last family member to inhabitant of the Davis House. During his residency he kept 140 cows on the property to maintain a dairy business. Restoration efforts are almost completed for the structure’s exterior, but there are continuing efforts to fundraise and repair the interior. Testing Program

Five students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Islip Career Center’s Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program completed their learner’s permit training and passed the New York State Learner’s Permit Test in the comfort of their classroom. Teacher Ken Able was encouraged by Principal Pete LePore to “think out of the box” and find ways to include training and testing skills that would lead to employment for the special career education students. Abel said, “Students obtain the skills that lead to employment but they need transportation to get to the job.” With permission from the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (NYSDMV), Abel

started a NYS learner’s permit training and testing program in his class. Students sit at a computer in the classroom which links to the NYSDMV online test. Three months ago, Matthew, a Comsewogue UFSD student, secured employment at Uncle Giuseppe’s in Port Jefferson. Matthew has an entry level position. He does parking lot maintenance, collects carts, and helps people find things in the store. He found the job on SnagAJob.com and completed an online application. “We looked for a job related to the skills he is learning in the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program,” said Abel. Matthew’s mom drives Matthew and picks him up from work. Matthew has his learner’s

permit and will be taking his road test in April. He said, “I like working at Uncle Giuseppe’s. I’m nervous about taking my driving test. I hope I pass. It will make it easier if I can drive myself to work.” Matthew has another goal, to obtain a forklift certification, which is also offered in Abel’s class. “I feel that having that ability, that skill, will help me advance at work,” Matthew said. Abel said, “It’s important that our students transition from school to successful employment. Having the ability to get a learner’s permit right in the classroom and then secure a job with the skills that lead to employment supports the vision of our school and the mission of the ESBOCES agency.”
