Ronkonkoma Middle School recently hosted a free Teen Cardiac Screening program titled “Beats for Liam,” in honor of Liam Regensburg, a Connetquot High School junior who passed away suddenly from sudden cardiac arrest in October 2012. During the event,

Connetquot High School was recently transformed into a visually stunning display of the life and works of William Shakespeare during the school’s second annual Shakespeare Festival. The day’s schedule consisted of various performances and Shakespeare-themed events to both celebrate and inform others of everything that William Shakespeare

had accomplished in his lifetime. After being escorted into the auditorium by students dressed to mimic Black Plague victims, students witnessed Shakespeare’s written word come to life and members of the school community performed snippets of popular Shakespeare plays, including “Romeo & Juliet” and “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

The school’s library was transformed into a Ye Olde Arts & Crafts center and Food Court, inviting students to write with quill feathers, design their own masquerade masks and play board games inspired by the Elizabethan era. The library’s food menu consisted of such items as shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, and delicious strawberry tarts.

Senior Public Health Educator John Martin and Director of School Health Education Nancy Hemendinger, MPA, brought an interactive and informational presentation “Being an Upstander” to the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center (ICC). Students from 22 different Special Career Education programs at ICC participated in either the morning or afternoon session. The presentation began on a serious note as Hemendinger spoke about bullying and how people should move from silence, a bystander, to action, an upstander. She showed the students a short video Out of the Shadows about body dissatisfaction and eating disorders. “Be careful not

to judge; we all need to work on that. Also, people get into the habit of putting themselves down but you need to love yourself,” she said. The resounding message was, don’t judge, we are all in this together, and beauty comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and sexualities. Martin launched into his portion of the presentation by tossing beach balls into the audience. Words of encouragement such as ‘you are amazing’ were written on them. He lit up the room with his positive energy, persuading all the students to participate in a variety of interactive activities. He asked the students to pledge participation in the group games, even if they felt awkward and silly, because

Career Awareness Sixth grade students at the Bellport Middle School were introduced to five career choices: Animal Science, Art, Design, and Visual Communications, Marine Motor Sports, Aviation/Professional Pilot, and TV Production at a recent Career Day. Teachers from these programs, offered at the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center (BTC) in Bellport, volunteered their time to speak with the youngsters. Career exploration is important at the middle school level so students

can begin thinking about their journey to achieving a career they desire. School Counselor Albana Sela at BTC thinks it’s important to connect schools and communities. She has fostered partnerships with the Bellport community and South Country CSD, a district that sends students to ESBOCES and the Academy. They reached out to Sela asking her to organize a Career Day that would highlight specific programs that interest sixth graders. Students learned about the hands-

on experiences in the classrooms, internship opportunities, career opportunities, and college readiness. Sela said, “What sixth graders do now matters! Having good study habits, good attendance, and getting passing grades will serve them well in their future careers and afford them the opportunity to attend ESBOCES or the Academy. The Career Day gave them important information so they could explore career options.”

Sixth grade students from the Jefferson Academic Center paid tribute to Earth Day by volunteering their time and energy at a local garden. Special Education Teacher Anna Cuevas said, “We offered our services and volunteered to help beautify the Port Jefferson Village Center garden.” Students weeded the garden, and planted seeds and flowers. Cuevas said the students would monitor the garden on a regular basis to see how the plants

were developing. It was an exciting opportunity for the students to help out the environment and contribute to the Port Jefferson Beautification Project. They were honored to receive a Thank You plaque for all their efforts. Lessons about Earth Day began with researching the origin of Earth Day to understand why we celebrate the day each April. Students learned that Earth Day is celebrated to demonstrate support for environmental protection. They participated in

STAFF SERGEANT HONORED - At the April 27th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board thanked Staff Sergeant Christopher Harper of the United States Army and Centereach VFW Post 4927 for his services and his re-enlistment. He entered active duty in 2006 and served at home and in Afghanistan and in 2014, Sergeant Harper joined the U.S. Army Recruiting Command in Patchogue. Since then, he has continued his service in our community as an active veteran, community partner, and member of the VFW post.

They washed and groomed the pups and gave them lots of love and attention. Donald said, “We were pleased to visit ICC to educate the students about Guardians of Rescue and share information about what students could do to help. If they observe an animal chained up, or any other type of abuse taking place, they should inform an organization like Guardians of Rescue because it could save the life of the animal.”

Students can pay it forward by sharing the information they learned in their classroom with friends and family. They can volunteer their time in shelters, offer to walk dogs, and most importantly, get the word out that people should adopt puppies, cats, and older dogs from shelters and stay away from shops that get their animals from puppy mills. *The Special Career Education programs at Islip Career Center allow students with disabilities to concentrate on one or more selected career and technical education areas and develop entry-level employment skills.

Engineering students in the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology recently participated in the fifth annual LI STEM Hub held at Brookhaven National Lab (BNL), an event to encourage students to pursue careers in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Students showcased school research and tech projects, listened to experts give presentations, networked,

and asked questions during the panel discussion. Academy Engineering students demonstrated their award-winning robotics; a structural tester and bridge design that placed in the top ten in the recent BNL Bridge Building Contest; a 3D-printed prosthetic hand and controller; a hydrogenfuel cell, remote-controlled vehicle; and more. Industry trailblazers, such as Hall of Fame Inventors

Esther Takeuchi and Marshall Jones, were in attendance in addition to Steven Patrikis, a pioneer in 3D prosthetics. “Said Ed Moloney, Academy engineering teacher, “Hob-knobbing with other STEM-focused students and industry veterans generated a great deal of excitement for students about continuing their studies at college, working in the industry, and pursuing their goals.”

They showcased their findings and research to scientists from BNL and local universities, as well as STEM industry leaders. The event, with sponsors including BNL, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and Northwell Health,

brings together students, scientists, STEM industry leaders and educators to discuss current and future trends in the field of science, engineering and mathematics. At the symposium, Victoria Cipriani and Michele Muscolo presented findings from their project titled “Using DNA Barcodes to Measure Biodiversity in Insects Captured with New Jersey Light Traps.” Lauren Kennedy, Kaitlyn Mills and Alexis Smith presented their work titled, “Evidence

of Two Invasive Species in Lake Ronkonkoma” as part of the Long Island Barcode Project, as a means for students to gain an intuitive understanding of the crucial interdependence between humans and the natural environment. Noah Thielke presented his work on finding near Earth objects after his discovery of three provisional asteroids while participating in the International Asteroid Search Campaign this past winter.

Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine and members of the Town Council were presented with a $77,800 rebate check at the April 27 Town Board meeting for participating in the PSEG Long Island Commercial Efficiency Program. The rebate is a result of the Town replacing 980 fluorescent lighting fixtures with energy efficient LED lighting on

the first floor of Town Hall. All together, the Town has upgraded a total of 2166 lighting fixtures at Town Hall with rebates totaling $183,746. All installations were handled by the Town Hall Engineering Department. The upgrade is part of Supervisor Romaine’s “Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Initiative,” part of a 5-year Capital

Plan to achieve a 50% reduction of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2020. The plan focuses on Town-owned Buildings and Facilities, Traffic Controls, Street Lights and Town Vehicles.

Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

On Thursday, April 27th, state and local officials, Suffolk County Police and the Sheriff’s Department joined Longwood School District officials to launch Operation Safe Stop, an annual statewide initiative to stop drivers from passing stopped school buses. “In the month of March alone, there have been more than 54,000 passes,” said Longwood School District Transportation Coordinator Gale Winsper. “The illegal passing of stopped school buses presents a significant risk to the 2.3 million children who ride buses to school each day. When parents

send their child to school, they should not fear for their safety due to another motorist’s carelessness. We urge drivers to stop when the bus has its red lights flashing; meaning students are boarding or disembarking school buses.” Operation Safe Stop is a statewide campaign to educate motorists about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus with lights flashing. The program seeks to promote school bus safety through education and strict enforcement efforts. The statewide initiative is a cooperative project

supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State Education Department, the New York Association for Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. To promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts, the Suffolk County Legislature recently passed a unanimous resolution designating April 27th, as OPERATION SAFE STOP - Kindergarten students at Coram Elementary School “Operation Safe Stop Day” help launch Operation Safe Stop at Longwood High School. in Suffolk County.

Leading the Way Connetquot High School is proud to announce the top 25 students for the graduating senior Class of 2017 - a high honor based on the students’ achievements and scholarly dedication throughout their academic careers. Included in the list of outstanding scholars are Class of 2017 valedictorian Mit Patel and salutatorian Anthony Mannino. During his years at Connetquot High School, Mit was integral in creating the school’s Science Olympiad team and was an active member of the Model UN, Interact and Habitat for Humanity Clubs. He has committed himself to studying at Harvard University this fall, where he will be

majoring in biochemistry. Mit plans to continue to be active in the scientific field and hopes to join one of the many science research based clubs along with politically-based clubs. Throughout his studies at Connetquot High School, Anthony has been a part of the Science Research Club, for which he won a third-place award in the Hydrogeology category at a recent competition. Additionally, he is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and plays trumpet in the school marching band. He has committed himself to attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a major in physics. While attending RPI, Anthony plans to engage in physics-

based research and become involved with the school’s debate team and politicallybased clubs. At the April 27th Town Board Meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board honored Lee Ann Brill who was name Ms. Senior of New York 2017. Lee Ann, who lives in Lake Ronkonkoma, has a diverse background in music, theater, song writing, singing, and performing. Over the years, she has

owned and ran a successful band which traveled throughout New York performing at events. She will travel to Atlantic City for the National Pageant in October. Lee Ann believes in giving back to the community. She has and continues to perform at fund raisers and has appeared for such causes as Parkinson

Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, and Breast Cancer Walk for Beauty and Children with Diabetes. “Congratulations to Lee Ann on being named Ms. Senior of New York” said Councilman Kevin LaValle. “Thank you for all the good work that you do to support our community and good luck at the National Pageant.”
