Decoding Diversity Six Sachem High School North science research students making up two teams recently worked to expand their genetics knowledge through the Barcode Long Island program. The program, led by the American Museum for National History, Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University, aims to enhance student understanding of the interdependence between humans and the natural environment. Each team of Sachem students developed a

project to investigate biodiversity on Long Island and submitted a written proposal to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for its annual symposium. Once accepted, the studentscientists took to the field to collect water quality data and biological specimens. Students then recently utilized the genetics lab at Stony Brook University to complete gel electrophoresis before sending the DNA samples out to be sequenced. Students worked alongside professional geneticists to extract and amplify DNA from almost 40 organisms.

Through the Barcode Long Island program students gain an authentic science research experience harnessing the capabilities of genetics labs they would not otherwise have access to until college. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced over 2,000 temporary jobs are available for the United States Golf Association’s (USGA) 2018 U.S. Open Golf Championship. Earlier today, the Suffolk County Department of Labor hosted a Job Fair at the Suffolk County OneStop Employment Center, located in Hauppauge, to recruit and fill positions in the food service and hospitality industry; event security; parking attendants and shuttle/ bus depot attendants; and operations. The Suffolk County Department of Labor has been actively supporting the recruiting efforts of multiple USGA vendors such as Purple Tie by Ridgewells, MTK Resources, Country Club Services, and Andy Frain Services, to bring temporary employment

’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by

all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time

for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Raising Funds at Food Bank The Middle Country Central School District’s North Coleman Road Elementary School recently raised $828.52 to support the local food bank Long Island Cares, Inc. as part of its participation in the Harry Chapin Practice-A-Thon. The month long charitable event encouraged students to practice and improve upon their musical talents,

while also empowering the students to make a meaningful impact in their community. Participating students documented their daily musical practice - for band, orchestra or chorus and recruited sponsors to pledge a certain amount per minute each individual student practiced. All proceeds will go directly to Long Island Cares to provide resources

that will benefit the hungry and food insecure on Long Island. The District continues to develop partnerships with local organizations that work to benefit those in need as part of its ongoing mission to organize opportunities for students to learn about the importance of community involvement

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, guest speaker at the April 19th Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Community Legislative Committee Meeting shared about his pathway into politics, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and making a difference. In attendance were ESBOCES and Academy staff and students, parents, board members, and local school district students. represents the residents of the 10th Legislative District, which comprises Great River, portions of Bay Shore, Bohemia, Brentwood, Central Islip, East Islip, Hauppauge, Islandia, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, and Ronkonkoma. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. Serving at Sea

A Ronkonkoma native and 2013 Connetquot High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard one of the Navy’s newest attack submarines, USS Hawaii. Petty Officer 2nd Class Brian Lorensten works as a machinist’s mate (weapons) serving aboard the Pearl Harbor-based submarine, one of 56 fast attack submarines in the U.S. Navy. Machinist’s mates (weapons) are responsible for maintaining the mechanical equipment associated with weapon systems. They also handle the small arms on the submarine. “I’ve grown up valuing the notion of respect for everyone,” said Lorensten. “That is a big part of working in the Navy.” Jobs are highly varied aboard the submarine, according to Navy officials. Approximately 130 men and women make up the submarine’s crew, doing everything from handling weapons to maintaining nuclear reactors. Navy officials explained that attack submarines are

designed to hunt down and destroy enemy submarines and surface ships; strike targets ashore with cruise missiles; carry and deliver Navy SEALs; carry out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions; and engage in mine warfare. Their primary tactical advantage is stealth, operating undetected under the sea for long periods of time. “Our submarine teams are small, elite, and rely heavily on extraordinary individual performance,” said Rear Adm. Daryl L. Caudle, commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet. “It is no surprise that our sailors continue to set the standard for excellence, and the country continues to be well served by their service and sacrifice. I couldn’t be more proud to lead this professional fighting force.” According to Navy officials, because of the demanding environment aboard submarines, personnel are accepted only after rigorous testing and observation.

Becoming a submariner is an accomplishment in itself. Lorensten is also proud of earning three Navy Achievement Medals and being honored as Blue Jacket Sailor of the Year in 2016. Lorensten also has military ties with family members who have previously served and is honored to carry on the family tradition. “My grandfather was in the Navy,” said Lorensten. “He wasn’t a big influence on my decision, but I chose to join the Navy anyway which has been an opportunity to carry on the tradition.” Challenging submarine living conditions build strong fellowship among the elite crew, Navy Officials explained. The crews are highly motivated, and quickly adapt to changing conditions. It is a busy life of specialized work, watches and drills. “We, as submariners, do things others in the Navy do not. We are less than two percent of the Navy,” said Lorensten. “I have pride in knowing that I sacrifice my family time to ensure others have a good life.”

Alternative Discussion In preparation to their upcoming field trip to the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in Manhattan, the students enrolled at ESBOCES Regional Alternative High School at Connetquot High School received a special visit from John Feal, founder of the FealGood Foundation, and fellow first responder James Palmer for an assembly on the rescue and

recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the collapse of the World Trade Center. Both Mr. Feal and Mr. Palmer spoke with great passion about the events that transpired following September 11th, 2001 and their commitment to help make a difference for the survivors. As a result of John Feal’s efforts through the FealGood Foundation, federal and state legislation

has been passed to provide health care and compensation to first responders who worked on the site, and their families. The students along with their principal Louise Burger, who is also the district director of mathematics, also participated in a question and answer session with the visitors.

During their time spent there, the students attended either a LINUX operating system or a day of Cyber mini-courses, along with data workshops on baseball, biometric, earthquake, marathon, payment, soccer, test and visualizing. Additionally, the students participated in a mathematics-based

The fourth-grade classes at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently celebrated “Colonial Day,” in which the students mimicked the lives of Americans living in the colonial era.

During the course of the past month, students researched different trades of the time. They used the resources of the school library to prepare reports they could share with the class and their visiting parents. The fourth-

Suffolk County Legislator William J. Lindsay III recently paid the third-grade students of Idle Hour Elementary School in the Connetquot Central School District a visit to discuss the importance of voting and what it’s like to work within the New York State government.

The students were first asked by Lindsay what were the three branches of government, to which they correctly answered by quickly stating judicial, legislative and executive. During the course of his visit, students learned the process for passing a law, and took part in a fun activity – which

choice they would prefer: no school on Friday or no homework during the week. After a heated debate between the opposing sides, the students came to a respectful conclusion that they would prefer there be no homework issued, alongside a full, five-day week of school.

Senator Flanagan is a long-standing education advocate, having previously served as the chairman of the New York State Committee on Education. “It is my pleasure to be able to assist the Carol Pufahl Literacy Foundation in their mission of providing children in our community with a strong educational base. By delivering books directly to young children in the Middle Country School District, the foundation helps ensure that these children enter school already acquainted with reading. This will help them reach their full potential and allow them to succeed in the coming years,” stated Senator Flanagan. The Middle Country UPK is the largest program on Long Island, serving more than 400 four-year olds from Centereach, Selden, Lake Grove, Lake Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson Station and Farmingville. On Friday, April 27th, Congressman Lee Zeldin hosted his fourth annual art reception at Artspace in Patchogue, during which he announced Isabella Kosiba of Smithtown Christian School as the 2018 winner of the Congressional Art Competition for the First Congressional District: “The Artistic Discovery Contest.” In attendance at the event were the twelve finalists, their art teachers and families, Artspace curator Tracy Todd Hunter, and local artists who served as judges. In an effort to enhance their computer coding proficiency, staff and administrators from the Connetquot Central School District recently attended a full day of training surrounding the computer science platform, KidOYO. The training session consisted of working on

the KidOYO platform, alongside other popular programs such as Maze, Hatch, Python Mini and various other web development programs. The professional development opportunities enabled the teachers to experience some of the most up to date computer

coding practices, which they will now be able to incorporate into classroom lessons as part of the district’s commitment to enhanced STEM education offerings.

7 Marathons in 7 Days

On April 27th, Supervisor Ed Romaine honored Eva Casale and her “Team Eva” colleagues at Town Hall during the last leg of her ”7 Marathons in 7 Days” run to raise funds and generate awareness for veterans. Ms. Casale, VP of Information Technology

at Suffolk Federal Credit Union, ran a total of 184 miles from April 21st27th to support veterans through Hope for Warriors. Along her route, she delivered 184 flowers at points of honor across Long Island, including the Veterans Memorial at Town Hall.

The run was held during “Every Veteran Appreciated Week” and focused on honoring local servicemen killed in action. The Supervisor presented Ms. Casale with a proclamation declaring April 27th “Eva Casale Day” in the Town of Brookhaven.

Students in the Middle Country Central School District’s Universal Pre-K (UPK) program are receiving the gift of literacy from the Long-Islandbased Carol Pufahl Literacy Foundation. Thanks to state funding secured by the office of Senator John Flanagan, the foundation is providing free, age-based books each month to the children, in keeping with the foundation’s mission to increase early childhood literacy. The grant will help offset the cost of the program. The Carol Pufahl Literacy Foundation delivered the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to each child enrolled in the UPK program as part of a high-quality system that includes access to books and family literacy, to lift up every child. Founded by singer Dolly Parton in 1996, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a set of books beginning with the children’s classic “The Little Engine That Could.” Each month a new, carefully selected, ageappropriate book is mailed directly to the home of children enrolled in the program. Nick’s Animal Adventures. For his presentation, Nature Nick brought along a number of animals to showcase, including a milk snake, “Bubbles” the African Barbary falcon, “Warlock” the eagle owl, a mata-mata turtle, and the students’ clear favorite,

“Pebbles” the Fennec fox. Not only did Nature Nick offer rich descriptions detailing the animals’ native land, diet and life cycles, he also allowed a handful of volunteers to hold the animals for a few moments.
