The Connetquot Central School District recently hosted its seventh annual Library Literacy Celebration on April 11 at Connetquot High School, surrounding the central theme of “Every Picture Tells A Story.” With assistance from the district’s librarians, interactive stations and/ or makerspace activities were set up throughout the schools’ hallways, as students were invited to create a robot or a monster, name literary characters, “jump into a book,” create a kaleidoscope, and participate in flight school,

amongst many others. This year’s guest presentation was delivered by author/illustrator Ralph Masiello, who coached the student-illustrators while storytelling and creating

original artwork of his own. While all of the supplementary fun was occurring in the school’s hallways, the heart of the Literacy Celebration was

writing it somewhere else. I do not want my headshot and my column’s logo staring back at me. Too much pressure. No thanks! I transfer my words over to my actual column once I have written down my thoughts. Lastly, here is my biggest trade secret I have to share when it comes to writing; some of my most engaging written words were actually created by talking to myself, out loud. Yes, your community newspaper’s columnist is a bit of a loony bird. I talk to myself - it’s how I write. And let me tell you, some of my most profound realizations about myself and about life have come from this stream of consciousness self-talk. Some of it is gibberish, but inevitably, some pearls come out. Shocked as anyone else, I run over to the nearest computer or notepad and get them down before they evaporate into thin air. Inspired thought is like a rare and elusive butterfly. You’re so awed by their beauty and divinity and before you know it, they’ve flown away. Capturing those moments is the art of writing.

Nope. The secret that myself, and many others who write for a living know, is that no writing actually takes place at the computer (or with a pen and notebook for that matter). Writing is simply... thought married with emotion. If you’re having a thought and there is a strong emotion behind it, you are writing. This stands to reason, since you are the screenwriter, director and producer of your life. When you are walking through a museum exhibit, you are writing. When you are listening to a beautiful piece of music that moves you, you are writing. When you are sharing a hearty laugh with someone, you are writing. When you are attempting to work through heartbreak, disappointment, trauma, anger, frustration or even love... my friends, you are writing. Putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard is not writing - that is the act of transcribing. By the time you sit down to “write,” it should already be written. In fact, I refuse to ever write my Living Well column in the actual column format. I insist on

Nope, You Don’t Have Writer’s Block. We’ve all watched the scene in the movie where the frustrated writer is sitting at his computer, sighing and running his fingers through his hair as words fail to flow from his fingertips onto the screen. This effect was even more dramatic in the days where writers would stare blankly at typewriters, write a few shaby sentences, become disgusted and then ball up the mostly blank piece of paper and toss it into an already filled wastepaper basket. These character’s were supposedly suffering from writer’s block, and “gasp!” their very livelihoods were on the line. Unfortunately, for these fictional characters and for the thousands of you out there who want to write for personal expression, pleasure, or perhaps as a profession (not to mention all of the writing we all now have to do on social media), you have been misguided by the myth of writer’s block. Yes, writer’s block is a myth; a misnomer. Here’s why... most people believe that one sits down in front of a computer keyboard to write.

Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(C)(3) non-profit organization. BACA formed with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They exist as a body of bikers to empower children not to feel afraid of the world in which they live. They stand ready to lend support to their wounded friends by involving them with an established, united organization.

BACA works in conjunction with local and state officials who are already in place to protect children. BACA receives calls on their helpline (631-408-8218), which is taken by the Chapter Child Liaison. This member contacts the family and an initial visit is organized to meet the guardian and child at their home or another location. Following this visit, two BACA members are assigned as “Primaries” to the child who remain available for contact 24/7/365. A ride is then organized for the members of the Chapter to meet the child. This is when a ceremony is performed to take the child into the BACA family, which is where the empowerment begins. BACA supports each child according to their individual needs. Some services available for the child and their family include a physical presence at the home (24/7 if needed), visiting the child at school, escorting the child to and from court, and they even maintain a therapy fund for children needing assistance.

If you are interested in becoming a BACA member you must meet certain requirements. Some of them are that you have regular access to a motorcycle, are 18 years or older, can pass an NCIC fingerprint check, can attend monthly meetings and Chapter events and that you have a desire to help abused children. If you meet the basic criteria, you can eventually become a “Cleared Supporter”, which is when you are assigned a Patched Member as your “Sponsor”. This member guides you through extensive training, which goes on for a minimum of at least one year before you can be considered eligible to become a full Patched Member. Students, faculty and staff at Hiawatha Elementary School recently participated in a buildingwide reading initiative that fostered a collective love for learning through the Andrew Clements book, “Frindle.” One Book, One School is an annual initiative at

Hiawatha that provides each student and staff member with a copy of the same book to read. This year’s book, “Frindle,” is about a boy who renames a pen a “frindle” and it eventually becomes a new word in the dictionary. In celebration of the initiative, Hiawatha hosted

a family event organized by librarian Kim Walker and art teacher Nicole Healy where students and their family members created invisible ink, bookmarks and made new words in addition to other engaging activities.

Technology Creates Connections Curriculum connections were plentiful for students at Sachem High School North during a recent visit from the Sachem Public Library, as students engaged in several activities utilizing highand low-tech educational tools. During science and math classes, students across grade levels experimented with

educational technologies that emphasized science, technology, engineering and math. Students used Magical Magnets to create three-dimensional figures, structures and shapes in addition to testing their design abilities using Strawbees and Legos. Exploring more complex technologies, students used the Autodesk program to improve their freehand

drawing skills and fuel interests in digital art. Additionally, students tried on virtual reality headsets and used iPads to control mBot robots. The visit from the public library allowed students to explore current curriculum concepts using a versatile selection of educational materials.

Hack Into the Competition from Bellmore-Merrick, Eastport South Manor, East Williston, Harborfields, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Manhasset, Mineola and Syosset school districts during the event. During the competition, students competed by creating coded projects to conquer territories on a map. Large monitors throughout the event displayed the live map as game play occurred during a three-hour,

highly competitive period, with one team ultimately emerging as the Code Conquest winner. “Although the team’s score didn’t make it to the top of the charts, they showed amazing perseverance, and fought until the very end,” said Connetquot Central School District Elementary STEM Chairperson Bethanie Rizzo.

Athletic Wall of Fame Thirteen alumni and coaches of the Connetquot Central School District will be added to the district’s prestigious Athletic Wall of Fame during a ceremony on Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m., at the Connetquot High School cafeteria as announced by Selection Committee Members Michael Konsevich and Michael Hansen. The Athletic Wall of Fame inductees are selected by a committee of veteran coaches, teachers and administrators from nominations submitted

by alumni Connetquot student-athletes, coaches and community members every two years. Learning How to Save Wildlife On April 12, Connetquot High School studentmembers of Lori Forgione’s Animal Conservation Club recently worked to solve a mystery involving a female Gray Seal pup which had washed up on an east end beach. Members of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society based in Hampton Bays visited the students and supplied a deceased 4-feet-long Gray Seal pup. The purpose of their visit was to explain the STUDENTS SHINE WITH SAT SCORES - The Connetquot Central School mission of Atlantic Marine District is thrilled to announce that six Connetquot High School students have earned scores of more than 1500 on their SAT’s, signifying a commitment to higher learning and robust knowledge of various topics. Congratulations to Victoria Cipriani, Darren Dutton, Jack Engeldrum, Olivia Esposito, Michele Muscolo and Thomas Passannante on their accomplishment. According to Connetquot Central School District Director of Guidance Jonathan Macaluso, this is the largest group of students to score over 1500 on their SAT’s in a single school year. Additionally, these students will join a number of Connetquot High School alumni who achieved this great feat as plaques signifying their accomplishment will hang outside the Connetquot High School Guidance Office for years to come.
