Stroke Support During American Stroke Month in May, the American Stroke Association (ASA) – a division of the American Heart Association - asks all Mainers to learn two things that may save a life. 1. Know if you are at risk for stroke. 2. Know the stroke warning signs and what to do in a stroke emergency. Stroke is the No. 1 preventable cause of disability and the fourth

leading cause of death in the United States. Someone in the United States has a stroke every 40 seconds, yet 80 percent of strokes are preventable. According to the ASA, knowing if you are at risk for stroke is highly important, because many risk factors can be modified and controlled. The No. 1 stroke risk factor is high blood pressure. Nearly 78 million Americans have high blood pressure and

many more aren’t even aware that they have it. For these reasons, the AHA urges all Mainers to check their blood pressure regularly and talk to their doctors about reaching and maintaining healthy blood pressure levels. Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is proud to partner with Shatterproof to host the 2014 Shatterproof Challenge, as we repel down the side of Nassau Community College to raise awareness and funding for addiction services across Long Island. This one-of-a-kind event will take place on May 27th, at the Administrative Tower within the Nassau Community College Campus in Garden City, NY. Working together with “Over The Edge” to ensure the highest level of safety for all participants. “As the nation is beginning to see that addiction is a serious disease that knows no boundaries, we are taking another unique step in raising awareness and changing the face of addiction through involvement,” explained Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, Executive Director at LICADD. Registration is just $25 and participants are asked to raise at least $1,000

in sponsorship through a personalized fundraising page on LICADD’s website. No prior rappelling experience is involved, “Over The Edge” provides all the equipment you’ll need and you will have a training session with the expert rope specialists before your big moment. “Over the Edge” adheres strictly to all National and State OSHA laws and the SPRAT/IRATA governing procedures and all participants operate under careful supervision. The specialists at “Over The Edge” are certified technical experts who often train SWAT teams and fire fighters and safety is their top priority.

A Home Away From Home

I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,

as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty

Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse

After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting its 3rd Annual Tee-Off For Our Teens Tournament at the Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, on Tuesday, May 20th. Seventy Six golfers will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views overlooking The Great Peconic Bay and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. The course opened in 2006 was designed by progolfers, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,000 or $3,600 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course. The day will end with a reception at 5:30 p.m., to be followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Proceeds from the TeeOff for Our Teens event will directly support the many evidencebased programs for teens that LICADD currently offers to the community. Blue Point Elementary School first-graders will be taking an up-close look at several species of marine life this spring as they work to maintain a 10-gallon saltwater aquarium. As part of their science and English language arts curriculum, the students have been learning about animals and their habitats, and the classroom tanks will enable them to delve into the subject matter on a deeper level.

On Saturday, April 26th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert stopped by the Middle Island Fire Department to extend congratulations to Justin Strunk of Troop 433 on achieving Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting. Ms. Kepert also attended the Eagle Scout Ceremonies of Romello Green, Kevin Perlow, Brendan Short, and Brandon Rodriguez of Troop 63 at the Coram Fire Department. Justin Strunk’s Eagle Scout project was to

construct a fire engineshaped bench for kids to sit on while watching educational videos at the Brookhaven Fire Fighter Museum. Romello Green built a pair of cement handicap access walkways into the Trinity United Methodist Church in Coram. For his project, Kevin Perlow constructed and installed two eco-friendly, durable plastic park benches made of recycled materials at a park in Mount Sinai. Brendan Short’s project consisted

Each year, Child Abuse Prevention Services (CAPS), Long Island’s leading non-profit dedicated to the prevention of bullying, child abuse and neglect among schoolage children, recognizes a local individual who has demonstrated a commitment to improving the lives of children. This year, the CAPS John Davis Memorial Award will be given to Nancy Greulich (Plainview) and Susan Silverman (Manhasset Hills), both long-time CAPS supporters, volunteers and past presidents of the CAPS Board of Directors. The presentation will be made at the CAPS 16th Annual Golf Outing, Monday, June 9th, at The Mill River Club, Oyster Bay, and will support the work of the agency’s Bully Prevention Center. “Both Nancy and Susan’s commitment to

Earth Day Celebration

INSPECTION & INSTALLATION - On Saturday, April 26th, Councilwoman Connie Kepert attended Middle Island Fire Department’s Annual Installation Dinner at Land’s End in Sayville. At the dinner, Councilwoman Kepert presented Certificates of Congratulations from the Town Board to department members being recognized for their service. Those being honored at the dinner included: Fire Fighter of the Year: Daniel Marsteller; Fire Fighter Probie of the Year: Cyndi Graziano; EMS Probie of the Year: Ihsan Sanal; Fire Police Probie of the Year: Joseph Fazio; and Tony Catania Award: Frank Smimmo.

On April 26th and April 27th, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo hosted an Earth Day learning activity, in which children were encouraged to plant bean seeds, provide the proper care, and watch it grow. Children took a cup, filled it with soil, dropped in a couple of seeds, added water and more soil, and then covered the cup with plastic wrap. They were then given instructions on

how to care for the plant once it grows. Game Farm staff members encouraged the children to keep records and drawings of the plant and post pictures of the plant to the Game Farm’s Facebook page. Earth Day is a national holiday that encourages individuals to take the time out of their day to appreciate our habitat. The purpose of this activity was to show children how they can care for our earth by

Stony Brook University was recognized twice during a week of Earth Day celebrations for environmental stewardship programs that place it as a leader in sustainability among all U.S. university and college campuses. The Princeton Review and the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) named Stony Brook as one of the nation’s most environmentally friendly or “green” colleges for the fifth year in a row,

and, in the RecycleMania 2014 tournament, Stony Brook finished strongly in multiple categories, and recycled the most e-waste of all colleges and universities for the second straight year. “I am extremely proud and very impressed by the efforts of our students, faculty and staff to reduce our carbon footprint,” said Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D., President of Stony Brook University. “We are extremely competitive with great

results in RecycleMania, but more important is the end result – living more responsibly with an eye toward environmental stewardship, hence our designation by the Princeton Review Guide to Green Campuses. These results reflect a true commitment from everyone on the Stony Brook campus.” The Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges profiles institutions of higher education in the United

States and two in Canada that demonstrate a strong commitment to sustainability in their academic offerings, campus infrastructure, activities and career preparation. As the leader in its total quantity of recycled e-waste, Stony Brook surpassed the second place finisher by 45,000 pounds, with a total of 125,498 pounds of e-waste recycling. Of the 68 colleges and universities listed in the Recyclemania 2014 competition, Stony Brook ranked fifth overall. The Guide characterizes Stony Brook University as an institution with “a long history of green awareness and environmental sustainability.” It cites the University’s eightyear initiative to reduce utility costs by investing in facility infrastructure improvements that “continue to reduce energy costs in excess of $4 million annually.” It also highlights Stony

Brook as the home to many buildings with green features, including the Advanced Energy Center, Frey Hall, the Marine Sciences Research Center, Nobel Halls, the Simons Center for Geometry & Physics, the Student Recreation Center, Southampton Library and West Side Dining. In addition, the Guide cites Stony Brook’s use of a variety of solar and energy-efficient solutions, including LED lighting, and its recent partnering with the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to create a campus Master Energy Plan. According to Barbara Chernow, Senior Vice President for Administration, “Stony Brook University’s commitment to sustainability permeates throughout our administrative, facilities and academic programs and is highlighted by our green buildings, energy efficiency

initiatives, alternative transportation services and comprehensive recycling programs. To date, our University has lowered its carbon footprint by 17.4% and is committed to carbon neutrality.” “SUNY campuses across the state are among the most energysmart in the nation, a leadership role that we continue to build upon through the expanded use of green technologies and sustainability initiatives,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. USGBC launched its Center for Green Schools in 2010 to increase its efforts to drive change in how campuses and schools are designed, constructed, and operated. According to Rob Franek, Senior Vice President and Publisher of The Princeton Review, today’s collegebound students have a significant interest in green issues. In a survey or more than 10,000 college applicants, the company found that 61 percent said having information about a school’s commitment to the environment would influence their decision to apply or attend the

Stony Brook University’s history of green awareness goes back to 1967, when the Environmental Defense Fund, which advocates using science, economics, and law to tackle environmental problems, was cofounded by a Stony Brook professor. Since then, Stony Brook University has signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, created an Office of Sustainability and has integrated sustainability into administrative, facilities and academic programs.

Today, the university’s comprehensive Sustainability Studies Program includes bachelor’s degrees in everything from Marine Science to Environmental Humanities. Stony Brook offers degrees in Environmental Studies, Marine Sciences, Environmental
