The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed
and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all.
With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles with Yogurt and Fresh Berries Makes about 6 5- to 6-inch waffles Serves 4 to 6

Orange Whole-Wheat Waffles 21⁄4 cups white whole-wheat flour 3 tablespoons sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 11⁄4 cups whole milk 1⁄2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice 2 eggs, separated 5 teaspoons packed, grated orange zest

3 Tips To Planning Efficient Home-Cooked Meals
A few generations ago, dining out was an experience reserved for special occasions. However, until recently, when restaurants were shuttered in the wake of the public health crisis prompted by the spread of COVID-19, many people were dining out multiple times a week. Hospitality solutions provider Fourth surveyed 1,000 American adults in 2019 and 56 percent reported dining out at least two to three times per week. Ten percent said they ate out four to six times each week, while 6 percent said they dined out everyday. People accustomed to relying on restaurant for meals multiple times per week may be unaccustomed to cooking many meals at home, which has become the norm thanks to restrictions placed on restaurants and other food-related businesses as part of COVID-19 social distancing precautions. Learning how to shop for food and prepare items by maximizing available ingredients can reduce
trips to the store and help people reduce food waste at a time when food is not as readily available as it once was. 1. Plan meals/browse circulars Meal planning and shopping lists are vital tools for people preparing meals at home. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up? Unemployment insurance is a program between your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes: • Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa.gov/ unemployment.
How much money will I get? It will vary by state. But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit. What about health insurance? It’s scary to think about getting through this pandemic without health insurance. What benefits you’re able to keep all depends on who you work for. The first step is to ask your employer. They may allow you to continue your health coverage for a short period of absence. If your employer is allowing you to keep your insurance, be sure to clarify if your missed premium payments will be: • Covered partially or fully by your employer • Deducted when you come back to work • Have to be paid now to continue getting insurance Your employer may also offer health care coverage through COBRA, but that can be very expensive. A limited number of states have also opened
enrollment to their own Affordable Care Act (ACA) health insurance exchanges. You may be able to sign up for a health insurance plan – even without a life-changing event, which is the usual exception to the standard open enrollment periods. What about prescription medications? It’s so important to keep taking your medications to stay as strong and healthy as possible. Two COVID-19 Clinical Trials Offer Patients Hope Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
Initial data available from studies using COVID-19 convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or lifethreatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement. People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus.
“Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cutting-edge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptom-free and fully recovered. In addition to being in good health, donors must also be at least 18 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. The plasma can be administered only to a consenting
