Students were presented with facts about insects and other bugs and were given a different perspective as to how these bugs live. Students were also able to act out how insects see, eat and survive as well as create and name their own models.

The Space Between By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

New Start Time For Air Show

Post-It Monday Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Anti-Bullying Club (ABC) recently spent their Sunday night placing post-it notes to each locker in the school to promote positive attitudes and antibullying sentiments. The club members had

been compiling notes and posters for weeks that read various positive statements like, “You are loved,” “Stay positive, good things will happen,” “You are beautiful inside and out.” The students were then joined by their advisors, Mrs. Matorelli and Ms.

Billoto, as well as parents and sibling volunteers to distribute the positive notes and signs around the entire building. The project aimed to bring happiness and smiles to the school community before what was sure to be a rigorous school week.

For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which will be headlining this year’s show, will be the final act and make their appearance in the sky above Jones Beach at approximately 4:00 p.m. This will be the POST-IT MONDAY - Connetquot Central School District Connetquot High School Continued On 9 Anti-Bullying Club members placed notes with encouraging words on the lockers of each student to promote happiness amongst their school community.

Connetquot Central School District principal of Connetquot’s Alternative High School, Mrs. Louise Burger, recently welcomed John Feal, founder and president of the FealGood Foundation, and two other members of his organization to speak to the high school students about the terrible events on September 11th and the importance of first responders.

The primary mission of Feal’s FealGood Foundation is to assist first responders suffering health problems as a result of an injury or exposure at the site of their work. The Foundation works to provide health care assistance as well as works closely with state and federal government officials to pass legislation in support of health care for first responders.

Mrs. Burger and her students had many questions for Feal and the two other members of the FealGood Foundation about the time they spent assisting at the World Trade Center site. The students also expressed desire to help clean up the site for a new memorial, to be located in Nesconset, dedicated to First Responders.

Lords & Ladies Of Music Connetquot Central School District Edith L. Slocum Elementary School music instructor, Mrs. Heidi Lewin, recently invited Principal John Delio to observe the group of fifth grade music students as they performed a song of their own arrangement. Three fifth grade classes competed to construct an arrangement and performance of a specific

song. The students worked to arrange the song, entitled “Renaissance Dance,” which included Orff instruments, miniature versions of percussion instruments like xylophones and marimbas, and recorders. Mrs. Alicia McNulty’s class emerged the most creative and were able to have a special performance of their piece of music. For an added treat to

the day’s performance, Slocum Elementary student, Kaitlyn McCourt, performed her New York State Music School Association (NYSSMA) Festival piece, entitled “Just Struttin’,” for her classmates and Principal Delio. The day’s performance served as an opportunity to celebrate the musical talents within the Connetquot Central School District.

Girl Scout Authors

Choir Festival afternoon rehearsing with other choirs from the area including three elite choirs from the surrounding area of Long Island and New York City as well as the Queens College Choir. Each choir then presented an evening performance.

The concert ended with a combined performance from all the choirs in attendance. Over 200 singers from each choir, sang an original song specially composed for this event by the Queens College composer.

On Arbor Day, April 24th, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilman Neil Foley and Councilman Kevin LaValle launched the Supervisor’s “Greening Brookhaven” initiative by distributing free tree seedlings at the Blue Point Preserve. The goal of the initiative is to distribute and plant 10,000 trees by 2020, the same goal date for

the Supervisor’s Green Energy & Sustainability initiative for Town facilities announced in his 2015 State of the Town Address. The tree giveaway follows up the energy audits and installations of energy efficient lighting that has already been done at Brookhaven’s Calabro Airport and will be completed at the Animal

Shelter in the next few weeks. During the giveaway, Audubon Society representative Joy Cirigliano worked with Girl Scout Troop 1106 to plant trees at the preserve. The trees are all native to Long Island and include Witch Hazel, Black Walnut, Red Maple and Red Oak.

On a recent beautiful Sunday morning, Long Islanders from Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma were treated to the site of 70 beautifully restored automobiles, many dating back to the beginning of the 1900’s! Organized by the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association, and President Ellyn Okvist, this fifth annual Sunday Drive began at Cunningham Park (Queens), traveled along the original route of the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, and ended triumphantly at the site of the original Petit Trianon Inn, at Islip Town’s Lake Ronkonkoma park. The event began on April 26th at 8 a.m. and ended three hours later with great fanfare! Members of the Ford Model ‘A’ Club of Long Island were proud to show off their wonderfully

restored classics along the route, and then to display them at Lake Ronkonkoma for history, and car, buffs. The Vanderbilt Motor Parkway was a private road built by financier William K. Vanderbilt (started in 1908 and closed in 1938). It was the first paved toll road on Long Island, and the site of the Vanderbilt Cup Races (NY to Lake Ronkonkoma). A proclamation by the Suffolk County Legislature was read near the site of the Petit Trianon Inn, naming it the 10th Historic site at Lake Ronkonkoma. Tolls were collected at the entrance to the park, as had been done by Vanderbilt’s toll collectors. Sunday’s tolls, though, were actually collected and later donated to the Arthur Lopez Memorial fund in honor of the Nassau County

Police Officer who lost his life in 2012. Honorary toll collectors, dressed as Evelyn Ericson daughter of the original toll collector, were Isabella Antonia Gordon, Elana Borowski and Tianna Balkam. The April 26th Sunday Drive was a wonderful success, and reminder of the history and tradition of the highways, automobiles, and proud citizens of Long Island, and Lake Ronkokoma. The Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association is dedicated to preserve and protect the history and heritage of the Lake Ronkonkoma community. LANDMARK NAMED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron joined the Lake Ronkonkoma Heritage Association at the 5th Annual Motor Parkway “Sunday Drive” to Lake Ronkonkoma this past Sunday, April 26th. The drive is from Cunningham Park, Queens to the Petit Trianon. This event marked the 104th Anniversary of the Petit Trianon Inaugural and upon arrival at the site, the Petit Trianon was proclaimed the 10th Historic Landmark of Lake Ronkonkoma.

A BUGS LIFE - Connetquot Central School District Edith L. Slocum Elementary School second grade students recently welcomed Mrs. Arthur, of the Long Island Center for the Arts & Sciences, to their classrooms. Students were presented with facts about insects and other bugs and were given a different perspective as to how thesbugs live. Students were also able to act out how insects see, eat and survive as well as create and name their own models of insects. CHINESE FOLK TALE - Connetquot Central School District’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School third grade students recently performed a series of musical presentations for their school mates in first grade. The musical presentation was an exhibit of Chinese music and presented the oriental folk tale by the name of “The River Dragons.” Using Chinese instruments, and with the help of the music teacher Mrs. White, third grade students were able to tell the story of the creation of the three major Chinese rivers and inform first graders about the Chinese culture, instruments and music.

Local Aid Provided Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School’s Habitat for Humanity (H4H) club, along with the help of the Connetquot High School Touchdown Club and Assistant Principal Mrs. Louise Burger, were able to raise the necessary funds needed

to purchase and install sturdy awnings to keep the snow and ice away from the entrance of Kevin Ferrera’s home. This effort was made to help Kevin, a leukemia patient and high school student, and his family during this difficult period. The students of the H4H

club have raised more money for the Habitat for Humanity program than any other school on Long Island. The program aides in building homes, hope and opportunities for STUDENTS GO GREEN - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield families to help themselves Elementary School recently hosted a “Locks of Love” fundraiser for Alexa Temple, in their community. a student currently fighting Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Friends, family, teachers and Duffield community members raised money by selling green hair extensions. All proceeds were donated towards Alexa’s medical treatment.

Walk For A Cure Help find a cure for the nation’s leading cause of disability by participating in the 2015 Walk To Cure Arthritis on Saturday, May 16th, at 11 a.m., at Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon, New York. More than 800 walkers, including individuals, families, and teams, will
