onnetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School was recently transformed into a Teddy Bear Emergency Room to teach students how to prevent injuries and promote the importance of being safety-conscious. To practice what they had learned, the students were able to play doctor by using Band-Aid® Brand Adhesive Bandages, gauze and tongue depressors on their stuffed animals. The students had a great time during this lesson.

In the summer of 2016 the Art League of Long Island is launching PreCollege Programs for students interested in learning what it takes to become and Architect or Fashion Designer. Taught by established and practicing Architects and Fashion Designers, teens ages 13 to 18 will gain deeper knowledge of these design professions through hands-on contact in their chosen medium, improve their creative design skills, and learn about the industry as a whole. Art League of Long Island Executive Director Charlee Miller knows well that Long Island’s economy depends on the next generation of professionals and business owners to sustain and grow the economy. As a financial services executive for 37 years prior to joining the Art League, Miller has encountered families working hard to achieve and sustain the American Dream. Having seen many young people leave Long Island for jobs, careers and housing elsewhere, it is important now to provide early PreCollege education that

will inspire and stimulate growth in the sciences, technology, engineering and math (STEM) that are crucial to the future economy of Long Island. However, without the creativity and innovation inherent (and a largely forgotten virtue) in these fields, many professionals cannot reach their highest levels of performance. The Art League aims to put the STEAM in these programs by developing and encouraging Artistic skill. With Art Education Program Director Elizabeth Kisseleff’s arrival at the Art League from Pratt Institute in early 2015, under her direction the Architecture and Fashion Programs were fully designed and developed to serve the needs of the Long Island Community. With her extensive experience in Pre-College programs Kisseleff understood the need for not only a high quality program in Architecture and Fashion, but the added need for proximity and affordability for Long Island residents. Rosie Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

The Art League’s Pre-College Program is comparable to the amount of instructional time spent at colleges and universities in New York City and outside of New York but at a much lower price when factoring in tuition and commute. Imagine getting a firstclass summer design intensive so close to home you can almost see it from your own backyard! Architecture and Fashion programs run July 11th through July 28th. In addition to the two Design Programs, the Pre-College program also offers the Art League’s well-established Portfolio Development running in two three-week sessions starting July 11th and August 1st respectively. A public exhibit featuring works by students in the Pre-College programs will take place in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery August 13th to August 21st. Scholarships have been made possible by small business and corporate partnerships, private donations and Art League supporters. Scholarships will be awarded based on financial need or merit. The deadline to submit the scholarship application is May 16th. The Art League of Long Island, located in the heart of Long Island, offers artists and would-be artists many opportunities to gain knowledge and expertise across a large variety of visual arts mediums. In addition to providing beginner to advanced instruction and skill-building for art professionals, the Art League also offers artists opportunities to display and sell their work in gallery exhibitions and fine art and craft fairs. 2016 promises to be a busy year for artists at the Art League. Of the thirteen exhibits scheduled for 2016, there are still four more juried competitions and shows open to local artists who wish to show their work and, depending on the situation, sell their work. “Long Island Life” asks photographers from Brooklyn to Montauk: what does living on Long Island mean to you? The exhibit will be on view July 2nd through July 24th. Deadline for submissions is June 1st. Exhibition juror is Neil Scholl. At the close of the year, the Art League’s Annual Members’ Exhibition

invites its members to submit one work of art to show in the gallery. In 2015, 233 2-D and 3-D works were on display. Due to the large number of submissions, the exhibit is broken into two parts. Part One will be on display November 12th through December 1st and Part Two will be on display December 10th, 2016 through January 8th, 2017. Entry into the exhibit is not juried, all members who follow the guidelines are accepted. However, awards of excellence and honorable mentions will be determined by a guest juror. The Art League’s Fine Art & Craft Fairs select only artists and craftspeople who submit sample photos indicating handcrafted works of superior quality. Of those selected to participate, care is taken to ensure a balanced representation of artistic mediums. Prizes are awarded to participating artists and craftspeople with the most innovative designs. The fairs run from 10am to 5pm on select weekends. The Art League’s 49th Annual Art in the Park Fine Art & Craft Fair will

take place June 4th & 5th at Heckscher Park in Huntington. Deadline for artists and craftspeople to submit application is May 20th. About 75 exhibitors participated in last year’s event, with thousands in attendance. The 53rd Annual Holiday Fine Art & Craft Fair will take place December 3rd and 4th. Deadline to submit applications for this well-attended event is November 24th. There is no charge to visit the gallery, however donations are much appreciated as the Art League is a not-forprofit organization. College Commitments Connetquot Central School District’s Connetquot High School Principal Kenneth Costa and Director of Athletics Mark Dellecave recently announced the college commitment of three student-athletes for the 2016-2017 school year. Mr. Costa and Mr. Dellecave joined parents in a ceremony to congratulate the students and wish them continued success as

collegiate student-athletes. Kerry Collins, ranked among the top 5% of Connetquot’s graduating class and member of the basketball, lacrosse, track and field hockey teams, will be attending the Colorado U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Connetquot High School volleyball team member Katie Von Kampen has committed to an undecided

course of study at Georgian Court University in Lakewood Township, New Jersey. Also attending Georgian Court University in the fall is Connetquot winter track record holder and shot league champion Samantha Smith, who helped Connetquot earn the league championship in the recent 4x100 meter relay.

Kindergarten students learned how to put gauze pads and Band Aid® bandages on their teddy bears’ injuries to help them recover. Ms. Kristi Ladowski, an Idle Hour alumna and registered nurse at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Trauma Center, taught students how to protect themselves from injury

by using helmets and practicing good car safety. Students also learned how to avoid injuries at home, playing or in the car. This event was part of the Connetquot Central School District’s initiative to help protect students at home and in school by teaching them how to avoid common risks to injury.

Operation Safe Stop On Thursday, April 21st, Supervisor Ed Romaine, Councilwoman Jane Bonner and Councilman Michael Loguercio attended the Longwood Central School District’s “Operation Safe Stop Day” event at Longwood Middle School.

At the April 21st Town Board meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle presented a Certificate of Congratulations to Joe Strazzeri, owner of Middle Country Automotive of Selden and Centereach, in recognition of being named Business of the Month for April in Council District 3.

The award is given to a business that deserves special recognition for the positive impact that they have on the community. In 2015, Middle Country Automotive of Selden and Centereach donated three vehicles to St. Margaret’s Church to provide to the less fortunate, and the generosity has continued

“We are so grateful to the Town of Brookhaven for upgrading our playground and making it a great place for the children to play,” said Ms. Walcott. “The children and parents are elated about the playground and it is just good for Middle Island.” The playground will be used by children in daycare at Middle Island Caring for Kids from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the week and will be open to the public for children five and younger on weekends.

Connetquot School Districts Edward J. Bosti Elementary School C-Quest students and advisors Mrs. Lisa Manzo and Mr. Kevin Keane recently welcomed Connetquot High School Spanish language teacher Ms. Dana Mendez-Chicas and several of her students to work with them.

The high school students worked with 5th graders at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School to enrich their understanding of the culture, geography and worldwide use of the Spanish language. Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of 4th and 5th

grade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district. C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages over the course of the program.

MARITIME EXPLORIUM - Connetquot School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary School fourth grade students recently worked as green engineers in an in-house field trip to the “Maritime Explorium.” The Maritime Explorium featured hands-on, interactive exhibits and activities demonstrating a variety of natural forces including water pressure, spin and the effect of gravity on liquids. SLIMING FOR A CAUSE - Connetquot School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students recently celebrated raising more than $6,700 during the school’s recent “Jump Rope for Heart” event to raise money for the American Heart Association and heart disease research by “sliming” teachers and their principal. More than 50 students raised at least $50 to earn the right to pour gooey, slimy, green cups of goop over the program organizers, physical education instructors Tara West and Michael Oldis, and building principal, Dr. Gail Cholden.

Run for Hope 5K Hope For Youth is hosting its Annual Run For Hope 5K in Heckscher State Park on May 14th beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the run support Hope For Youth’s mission of facilitating positive change in youth and families on Long Island through residential, out-patient and preventive services. Last year, the event was attended by over 200 participants who walked, jogged, and ran to help bring awareness to the agency mission and the programs offered to families in need. Since then, the organization has

grown with new programs underway including a drug and alcohol prevention program run in conjunction with the Town of Babylon and a runaway youth shelter meant to give teens in need a safe haven from abusive home life. “It’s an exciting time for Hope For Youth,” says Director of Program Development, Kate Travers. “Our Youth Shelter Program is almost ready to open. We’ve spent the last few months renovating the house with fresh paint, new appliances, and donated furniture. The hope is that teens living in neglectful or abusive

homes will hear about the home and contact us over Facebook or through a trusted adult to get help. That’s why we reach out to the community with our run every year. We need to get the word out to these kids that they have an organization looking out for them!” Like last year’s successful event, the run will include music, refreshments and a Zumba warm up.
