A New Season By: Jamie Lynn Ryan For those readers who may be unaware, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers recently launched a new venture, Seasons Magazine. With the beautiful weather upon us, many might be inclined to hop on a plane and travel to a tropical island to bask in the warm rays of the sun. But why even leave Long Island? There’s plenty to do right here, in any season. I have to say, Spring is probably my favorite of all, what with the milder weather, the ﬂowers blossoming, the birds chirping – it’s full of promise and new life, a much-needed reprieve from the winter hibernation we all tend to retreat into. Take a stroll in the park, stick your toes in the ocean, have a picnic in the grass – anything to enjoy the great outdoors. Baseball season is underway, summer concert season is right

around the corner and miles of sandy beaches beckon just over the horizon. But Spring is here now! Enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer before the thermometer hits 90º and everyone runs back inside to their air conditioners – a different sort of hibernation. And, hey, if you’re looking for something fun to read while lounging in your hammock or sipping your morning coffee on the veranda, don’t forget to check out Seasons Magazine for some great upcoming events, a listing of Long Island wineries, Mother’s Day gift ideas, fitness tips for Spring and more. (As shameless plugs go, the third time’s the charm.)

The Avino Family has been named honoree for the 2014 Ann LePage Golf Classic benefiting Brookhaven Hospice. This year’s event, the Tee-off In The Tropics, will be held on Monday, June 2nd at the Bellport Country Club. In 1984 Jim Avino opened his first restaurant, The Bellport Chowder House and has owned Avino’s Italian Table in Bellport for six years. Jim has always been a member of the Bellport Chamber of Commerce and is currently the Chamber Historian. He has a strong sense of community and supports many local organizations, including the Eastern Farm Workers Association, Bellport Football, and Playcrafters.

Golf Classic Set John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 29th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 2nd with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The award is given to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. IRA has since 1990 generously supported various hospital events including the Golf Classic,

Fortunato Breast Health Center and One Enchanted Evening gala. In addition, IRA has contributed to local and national charities including Long Island Food Pantries, Children’s Hospital at Montefiore, Contractors for Kids, Adopt a Family, The Martin Sperling Memorial Fund, Middle Island Caring for Kids, Smithtown Chamber of Commerce, Sunrise Day Camp-Cancer Walkathon, The Rock Church, William Floyd Scholarship Fund, Jack Hanley Memorial, Chabad of Northeast Queens, Invisible Children and Autism Speaks Industries. Louis J. Bove, president of Bove Industries of East Setauket, takes over this year as event chairman, a post once held by his father, Vincent Bove, who also served as chairman of Mather’s Board of Directors. In 2013, Mather Hospital earned the prestigious Magnet® designation that

recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Fewer than 400 hospitals worldwide have earned Magnet® designation. Registration for the Golf Classic begins at 9 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Foursomes will be treated to a barbecue lunch out on the course followed by a cocktail reception and buffet dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Dessert and a rafﬂe drawing takes place at 7 p.m. The golf entry fee is $500 per person or $2,000 per foursome. Finding Paradise On An Island

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland ﬂooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

LITERARY LUAU - Connetquot Central School District recently celebrated its 3rd Annual Literary Luau attended by over 1,000 students, parents, teachers and librarians from the District. The Literary Luau is an opportunity for students to meet with local authors who stress the importance of education and benefits of reading in order to achieving academic success. Over 20 local children’s book authors attended the event and discussed the importance of reading as well as answering questions from the students about their career as authors. The students participated in activities that included older students reading to younger students, literary bingo, jeopardy and drawing of book posters.

LITERARY BREAKFAST - As part of a District’s anti-bullying initiative, Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti Elementary School students, parents and teachers recently participated in a “Literacy Breakfast” event and read a book titled The Invisible Boy. The book is about how small random acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others and help in preventing against bullying. The breakfast event was designed to celebrate the conclusion of the school-wide activity “One Book, One Bosti Community.”

EDUCATORS RECOGNIZED - Two Connetquot Central School District (CCSD) educators, Mark Dellecave, Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics and Jon-Michael Lasher, Director of Fine Arts and Music Education, were recently honored at the 2014 Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) Community Honors Gala. 5K RACERS - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted the 2014 “Duffield Dash” sponsored by the Duffield Parent Teacher Association. Hundreds of Connetquot residents and people from all over Long Island participated in the One Mile Fun Run and the 5K footrace around the Duffield neighborhood. Local residents handed out water along the route while small children climbed the local fire department trucks. The event was part of an initiative to encourage healthy living in the community.

PIE FIGHT - Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School K-5th grade students recently raised over $13,000 for the American Heart Association. As a reward for meeting their fundraising objective, the students who raised the most money had the opportunity to throw pies at principal Dr. Gail Cholden and physical education teachers Tara West and Michael Oldis. The money was raised as part of the “Jump Rope for Heart” program, which aims to educate students about the importance of physical activities and proper nutrition to promote excellent heart health.

Waco Aerobatic Team, unveiled recently at the International Council of Air Shows in Las Vegas, will also be making its Bethpage Air Show debut. The airplane, a Taperwing Waco made famous by barnstormers of the 1920s and 30s, adds the modern twist of a jet engine that will thrill spectators with amazing sights and sounds. John Klatt, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, who fought in Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, and Jeff Boerboon, a U.S. Unlimited Aerobatics Champion, will pilot the Screamin’ Sasquatch. Crisis Center Honored Long Island Crisis Center (LICC) Executive Director Linda Leonard was honored by more 350 of Long Island’s most ardent public education supporters recently, as one of 16 honorees to receive the 2014 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award at the Nassau BOCES Educational Foundation’s annual gala earlier this month. The distinction is bestowed on those individuals or organizations that have made a substantial impact on public education in Nassau County. Leonard represented the LICC, which was lauded as one of the most devoted institutions in support of public education on Long Island. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed

around-the-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island

agencies. In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21.

LICC also offers extensive outreach to Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student and teacher interaction. Topics are age-appropriate and carefully scripted, and include suicide prevention and awareness, anger management, understanding self-injury, the dangers of cyberbullying, understanding homophobia and transphobia, and

Crisis Center Honored adolescent depression. As of last school year, more than 13,000 students and educators participated in the program. The center offers free, high-quality, confidential programs and services to support and empower Long Islanders at critical times in their lives, based on a series of core values that include timeliness, integrity, respect, transparency, empowerment and innovation. And the center has gone a long way to making that last value work for all the others. The LICC

was the recipient of the Innovation Award by the 1st Annual Long Island Imagine Awards, for implementing technology to bring its lifesaving services to as many people as possible.
