Coram’s Sarah John was barely three months into her first semester at Suffolk County Community College when duty called, and New York National Guard Army Specialist Sarah John was deployed to Staten Island at the beginnings of the global pandemic to help secure a COVID-19 testing facility. “This has been life changing. It has been great to be able to help people. That’s what this is all about. The National Guard is all about helping the community,” John said. “We could not be more proud and grateful for Sarah. She is an exceptional student and an exceptional soldier. We are grateful for her service and her sacrifice and recognize that she is a true example of leadership both in the classroom and in her community,” said Suffolk County Community

College Director of Veterans Affairs Shannon O’Neill. Still deployed nearly one year later, John, a 2018 Longwood High School graduate, routinely works 12-hour shifts, sometimes overnights, and continues to attend classes remotely at Suffolk. “The military is paying for my education,” John explained, and that is my motivation. There were times when I was frustrated and wanted to give up,” she said, but, “In my family we do not take school lightly. My parents are not from this country and we try to take every opportunity we can to excel and achieve. I was born here and want to take every opportunity I can to do better. I want to do my best. I don’t make excuses.” John said her that latest mission at an armory in New York City occasionally allows her time to crack

open a book and catch up on reading assignments. It wasn’t always that way. “When I was deployed to the Javits Center I worked overnights keeping the building, which had been turned into a field hospital, secure,” John said “checking the many entrance and exit doors, making sure that anyone in the building was authorized to be there. When I completed my shift, I returned to my hotel at about 6 or 7 a.m., took a shower, took an hour nap and then attended class.” John said that since being deployed on March 18 of last year she’s not been able to get home much but has enjoyed her experience helping people and being able to continue attending classes at Suffolk. A liberal arts/general studies major, John said that she will graduate from Suffolk in December.

This not only improves the patient care experience, which is in and of itself very important;

it also allows us to keep our patients safely out of the hospital if that is at all possible,” Dr. Kaufman said. Dr. Kaufman has been a practicing physician for over 30 years. He obtained a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry at SUNY Stony Brook before attending Ross University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at Jersey City Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident. Dr. Kaufman completed his nephrology fellowships at New York Medical College and SUNY Stony Brook, which included an additional year of research in acid-base physiology. Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have

filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. Caracappa Secures Farmingville Hills County Park for Middle Country Central School District’s Cross Country Team Parks were closed due to the pandemic, Middle Country’s Coach Joe Toto reached out to me to find a new, closer venue. I then contacted County Executive Steve Bellone’s office for assistance. Shortly after, Mr. Bellone announced the re-opening of all Suffolk County parks for use by the school districts’ cross country teams.” Purchased by the county in the 1980s as a part of the Open Space Preservation Act, the 105-acre park officially opened to the public in May of 2010. The park features

a large open area of grass where events take place, as well as 1.2 miles of hiking trails with hilly terrain. “I’m pleased to have helped the team stay closer to home, which saves them travel time and the district considerable gas money. Additionally, it was very rewarding to hear firsthand how much the studentathletes and coaches love the county parks and look forward to utilizing them in the future,” concluded Caracappa.

By Patrick Mitchell, Past Commander NYS Sons Of AMVETS On April 20, AMVETS Post 48 Members visited Canine Companions for Independence Miller Family Campus in Medford, NY to make a donation to the Service Dog Organizations Veterans Initiative. This program provides highly trained service dogs at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel with disabilities. Canine Companions is an organization that promotes the concept of training specially bred dogs to help people with disabilities other than blindness. All Canine Companions service dogs go through an intensive

training process where they learn to master more than forty commands. Dogs and veterans are matched to form a team, and together they attend a two-week training program where they learn to work together. Canine Companions Veterans Initiative provides highly trained service dogs, at no cost to veterans and active duty military personnel with physical disabilities from the Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam conﬂicts. Canine Companions provides dogs for children, adults and veterans with disabilities free of charge. They also provide dogs working in a professional or therapeutic visitation

setting, including hospitals and rehabilitation centers. Canine Companions nationally has a dedicated volunteer workforce of over 3000 individuals. Volunteer Puppy Raisers teach the dogs basic commands and socialize them in public settings for the first 1416 months of their lives. Volunteer Puppy raisers are needed further develop Canine Companions puppies in social settings.
