Special Career Education high school students and three and four-year-old preschoolers were treated to a Cornell Cooperative Extension presentation, Birds of a Feather. The presentation included a story, a craft, and a handson experience with a chicken and a duck. Agricultural Educator June DeVitto brought a domestic chicken, Butterscotch, and an Indian Runner Duck, Fudgecake, to the Early

Childhood Education (ECE) Program at Islip Career Center in Eastern Suffolk BOCES. DeVitto has been an educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension for over 22 years and is amazed at how many people have never touched a chicken or a duck. “The presentation is geared to the preschoolers but it is a learning experience for everyone,” she said. ECE Teacher Rachel Grodofsky said, “This presentation offers something to both the

high school and preschool audience. It highlights comprehension skills. The high school students learn how to work with very inquisitive young minds; best of all, everyone gets to use their five senses.” High school students in the ECE Program are preparing for careers working with children. They are getting career ready to be camp counselors, work in nursery schools, or as child care providers. Grodofsky said, “These high school students are learning how to be effective classroom leaders.” June DeVitto wanted everyone to learn how to handle animals properly and to be gentle. “Kids grow up and they want a pet,” she said. “I want them to learn about the animal world and gain a respect for life. I want them to use their senses and I hope the program heightens their awareness of other things that are around them in the world.”

I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

The Middle County Central School District’s cosmetology students Centereach High School and Newfield High School recently placed first, second and third during the SkillsUSA Regional Competition at Suffolk Community College in

Brentwood. The SkillsUSA Championships are competitive events showcasing the best career and technical education students in the nation. Centereach High School seniors Brittani Ortiz and Amanda Mezzich

finished in first and second respectively, and Newfield High School student Rebecca Devine placed third. The students were rated on their performance demonstrating a complex layered haircut and mastery in advanced styling techniques.

District Receives Top Marks The New York State Comptroller’s Office, which is responsible for overseeing the finances of all public schools in New York State, recently completed an audit of Longwood School District’s purchasing practices for the period July 1st, 2014 through September 30th, 2015. One of the top priorities of the audit was to provide a review of the management and the accountability of tax dollars spent to support District operations. The State Comptroller’s Office performed a complete risk assessment of the District’s operations. Once the risk assessment

was completed, the Comptroller then reviewed the controls surrounding the purchasing process within the District’s Business Office and compliance with Board of Education adopted purchasing policies. The Comptroller’s report noted that proper purchasing polices had been adopted by the Board and were regularly reviewed. The report also noted that the District has a purchase order system in place to ensure that purchases are properly initiated, approved, documented and verified as received. The Comptroller’s Office found that the District was in full

compliance and announced that its auditor’s findings were satisfactory. The District received a clean audit report with no follow up necessary. “We are very pleased with the results of the audit conducted by the Comptroller’s Office,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Michael Lonergan. “The Board of Education and administration remain committed to fiscal transparency and accountability, as well as the continued protection of the taxpayers we serve.” The audit was accepted by the Board of Education at the Thursday, April 7th, 2016 meeting.

Lessons of Tolerance opportunity to teach students compassion and sensitivity when dealing with someone who looks or acts differently. “We want everyone in our school community to feel safe and comfortable,” said Mrs. Wesley. “Through these hands-on activities, the children learned

about diversity, accepting differences, empathy and kindness to others.” Work stations were located throughout the gym to provide hands on activities to demonstrate the difficulties and frustrations someone with a disability may experience in their everyday life.

Connetquot School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School students recently took part in the District’s 2016 Science Fair Competition. The annual program invites students in grades kindergarten through 5th grade to submit projects including charts, experiments, demos, diagrams and collections

HITTING THE STAGE - Middle Country Central School District’s Newfield High School Theatre Department recently opened a production of the classic musical “Bye Bye Birdie.” The students performed for crowded audiences during multiple weekend show times. The Newfield High School student-actors sang hit songs from the famous musical including, “Put On a Happy Face” and “What’s the Matter with Kids Today.”

WEST SIDE STORY - The Middle Country Central School District’s Centereach High School Theatre Department recently performed a student production of the musical “West Side Story.” The actors and actresses, including Michaela Catapano and Isaiah Washington who played the lead roles of Maria and Tony, showcased their musical and dramatic talents. Students, teachers administrators and community members attended the performance and showed their support for the performers.

Golf Classic Set Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center is teeing up its 19th Annual Golf Classic and Tennis Tournament on Monday, May 16th, 2016 at Glen Oaks Country Club in Old Westbury. The annual event, which is again sponsored by Astoria Bank, will offer golfers an opportunity to

play at this prestigious 27-hold course which has recently been selected to host the 2017 Barclays Tournament. The Barclays is the first event of the FedExCup Playoffs and features the top 125 in the FedExCup Standings. The Good Sam tennis tournament will return this year as well.

Kevin J. Mullins, MD, FASNS, FACS, Chief of Neurosurgery, Director of Neurological Services for Good Samaritan has been chosen as the Honoree and proceeds from the event will benefit Neurosciences at Good Samaritan Hospital. Golfers will enjoy a 10:30 a.m. brunch which

will be followed by a noon shotgun start. There will be a cocktail reception beginning at 5 p.m. and dinner and the awards ceremony will follow starting at 6 pm. The tennis schedule kicks off with lunch at 1 pm followed by warm-ups at 1:30 and a 2 p.m. start time.

A range of golf and tennis sponsorships as well as underwriting opportunities are available. All sponsorships include golfer or tennis fees, brunch, refreshments, dinner and cocktail reception, a gift and chance for prizes. Individual golfers, foursomes and tennis
