Students, teachers and staff members at Connetquot Central School District’s Cherokee Street Elementary School recently welcomed Peter Walsh and Sue Avery from the Seatuck Environmental Organization of Islip to work with students in designing a special garden in front of the school.
“The garden will contain a variety of species from around Long Island and will serve as a learning science laboratory for the Cherokee community,” said Cherokee Street Elementary School second-grade teacher Sandra Fantauzzi. “Over time, we will look to collect and propagate plant
material in order to expand the garden and further support the preservation of Long Island’s native plant populations.” Students were actively involved in designing the garden, and indicated that they were eager to see the plant life grow once planting begins in June of 2017.

Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., will be held on Saturday, May 20th at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. It is part of a national effort that draws over 5 million volunteers in more than 20,000 communities across America who come together to pick up litter and clean miles of roadways, rivers, lakes, and more. Last year, the Great Brookhaven Clean Up drew over 3,300 residents. Free gloves, trash bags and t-shirts will be provided by the Town for the Great Brookhaven Clean Up volunteers. The supplies
will be available for pick up at the Department of Waste Management’s third floor office at Town Hall during regular business hours (9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) from May 8th to May 19th. Students in the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Adult Education Practical Nursing and Clinical Medical Assisting Programs participated in a two-day Alzheimer’s Association and HealthCare InteractiveÒ Training Program in Brentwood. Community Education Manager Robert Schuster, M.S.Ed., and Community Educator Angie Avila provided the training. Upon completion of the training program, the students took a test to receive a CARESÒ Dementia Basics™ 4-Hour Online Training Program Certificate of Completion. The CARESÒ Approach is a person-centered approach for dementia caregivers. Students learned that it’s important to meet the needs of the
person by Connecting with the person, Assessing their Behavior, Responding appropriately, Evaluating what works, and Sharing what worked with others. Kayla Pilch, from Lake Grove, is graduating this year and will go on to take the New York State Licensing Examination to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She thought the training was extremely beneficial. “The training included modules, case scenarios, videos, and skills methodology,” she said. The students learned how to approach a person, how to communicate with someone who is verbal and non-verbal, and what to look for when they see repetitive movements, like foot or hand tapping. They learned how to offer
compassionate care and how to empathize with a person who has dementia. Empathy involves accepting another person, helping them feel understood and not alone, and as caregivers in the health sciences field, the students learned how to respond to a person with dementia whose world is confusing, fragmented, and sometimes frightening. “With an increase in the aging population and the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s,” said Program Administrator Debra Epilone, “it is important for us to include trainings like this in our curriculum. Our students now have additional skills they can apply as they move forward in their career in the field of health sciences.”
VETERANS SUPPORT - On April 8th, Councilman Michael Loguercio attended the Colonel Josiah Smith Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution “In the Company of Heroes” meeting where he presented William Stilwagen with a proclamation recognizing his work in support of veterans. Mr. Stilwagen was instrumental in the founding of the Suffolk County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park at Bald Hill among his many other efforts that have helped veterans over the years.

Check the Calendar So much of life is spent planning, filling in those square boxes on the calendar with appointments and meetings and lunch dates and movie outings. And yet, very little of that time is spent doing things we truly enjoy. Even certain social engagements seem to take on a sense of obligation, of fitting in “fun” simply so that we can check off “reconnecting with old friends” from the neverending to do list. To do, or not to do, that is the question. Sure, there are plenty of things we “have” to do, even if we sometimes lose sight of why. We have been trained, conditioned, to meet the expectations of a society that sees any type of downtime as a bad thing.
If you’re not doing something 24/7, surely you must be shirking some responsibility or another. But what if we simply choose to kick back and relax, to spend our time “doing” nothing – and just leave it at that, no explanation needed. Is that really such a bad thing? When was the last time you slept in, just because? When did you have an entire day with absolutely nothing planned, and no sense of guilt because of it? Leisure does not equal laziness. I recently had lunch with a friend, and this very topic came up, in the context of taking a step back and truly evaluating what it is we want to do – in life as a whole, over the next several
