In the midst of this “never-experienced in our lifetime” coronavirus pandemic, the current “stay at home” orders may have slowed down the pace of life for many. Even if you are afforded the ability to work from home, the daily commute has been eliminated from your routine. As many already know, for the doctors, nurses, orderlies, EMT and countless other workers in the medical field, their pace of life has been ramped up significantly. Not only are they unable to work from home, but they show up in the “frontlines” of the virus, many exhausted from long hours of caring for patients. Then, they go home and put their families at risk of contracting the virus. We all know this, but it bears
repeating to remind us how fortunate we are to have these health care workers fighting for us all! They are our heroes. We cannot forget that, or forget to be grateful for their efforts. If they themselves become ill, as many have, or chose to walk off the job to protect themselves, this virus may never be combated. So how can we help them? First and foremostfollow all social distancing protocols outlined by your elected officials. Stay at home as much as possible, wear protective gear and keep a distance of at least six feet from others when absolutely necessary to go out, and WASH YOUR HANDS constantly! Some people still don’t follow these simple guidelines. The sooner we all comply, the sooner we can get back to life as we knew it.
Having said this, I would like to publicly say THANK YOU to all of our heroes in the medical field. “Thank you” seems inadequate wording to express my appreciation, but the enormous appreciation is there nonetheless. Our lives are indebted to your expertise and hard work. To the general public: I urge you to express similar appreciation in any way possible. Whether it be a sign on your front lawn, providing a meal for a medical family too busy to cook, or making and/ or donating masks, do something to let our heroes know we are thinking of them. Necessity – Still the Mother of Invention Science-minded Catholic School Family School Builds Ventilator in Kitchen
NECESSITY – STILL THE MOTHER OF INVENTION - Robert and Michael Stadelman work on their ventilator prototype on the floor of their kitchen. For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit. Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her
husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work
with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Third Annual Senecon Event Sets Sights On Artistic Inspiration Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently hosted its third annual Senecon pop culture event during which established authors, illustrators and performers visited to share their specialties with students. Throughout the day, students traveled around the building to classrooms dedicated to specific presentations by talented professionals from multiple
disciplines. Among the presentations students attended were origami with artists Shrikant Iyer and Jacqueline Billig, illustration with David O. Miller, an art workshop presented by Imagine That! which introduced students to famous artist Jackson Pollack’s work, comic drawing with Marvel artist Billy Tucci, Manga style comic artist Misako Rocks! and a
captivating combination of art and storytelling with Christopher Agostino, who painted several students’ faces to coincide with folktales he told from around the world. Additionally, students learned tips and tricks from ventriloquist Jonathan Geffner, explored music and sound with Brent Daniels and learned to play harmonica with Jim Turner.

Holocaust Rememberance Services Available Online During COVID19 A commemorative annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Service will be part of the weekly Friday evening Sabbath Services held on April 24 by Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge. Holocaust Remembrance Day is a day where we remember the six million Jews and millions of others who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the Nazi regime and its collaborators. The livestreaming Friday Night Shabbat Services, due to COVID 19, will be held at 7:30pm. We welcome the community to join us for this event, as it is open to non-members as well as the members of Temple Beth Chai. The guest speaker for
2020 will be Holocaust Survivor Mireille Taub, of Long Island. Ms. Taub was born in Paris, France and was lucky enough to take the last train out before France surrendered to the Nazis. Her train was bombed; she and her family walked to safety, traveled across the Pyrenees and passed through Spain and Portugal, arriving in New York on August 11, 1940. She was not quite two years old. She grew up hearing stories about how her family made preparations to leave (as of 1936) if the Nazis were victorious. Mireille Taub has a professional diploma in special education and a Master’s Degree in reading.
She attended both the Sorbonne undergraduate and graduate programs at the Ecole Du Louvre. At Brooklyn College, she was an Art, English and Classics major. How Earth Day And Environmental Conciousness Have Evolved
Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.
Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. Suffolk graduate Miles Lewis shared in the glory of Suffolk County Community College’s 2019 Women’s Cross Country National Championship title – the team’s third -- as an assistant coach under Head Coach Matt French late last year. But what few know is that Lewis is a champion in his own right. A Newfield High School graduate from Coram, Lewis transferred from LIU Brooklyn and earned a liberal arts degree from Suffolk in 2012 and then double majored in communications and psychology and graduated from SUNY Buffalo with a bachelor’s degree in 2015. The students welcomed Tim Sarro, an astronomer with the Cradle of Aviation Museum, to Edward J. Bosti Elementary School for an interplanetary exhibition. Sarro taught the students about America’s successful exploration of space and gave them a chance to explore a topographical map of the surface of Mars. Students took turns playing the roles of rover, signaler and programmer, one student providing directions to a second student, who would then pass those directions to the blindfolded “rover� so that “specimens� could be collected.
