The Week That Was By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Let’s try something different for a change. Instead of waiting until the eleventh hour to compose my thoughts for the week, I’ve decided to jot down a bit each day, with hopes that these random ramblings will gel into a somewhat coherent theme. Sounds just abstract enough to work. Monday… The weekly “fresh start” we all seek, yet are often disappointed by about 10 minutes into. For me, the perfect opportunity to catch up on the avalanche of e-mails that have surely accumulated over the weekend, while methodically trying to plan the remainder of the week’s activities. A quick scan of social media says everyone is still buzzing about last night’s
highly anticipated season premiere of Game of Thrones. Me, I’m still working my way through the series of five larger-than-life books. Tuesday… Into the fray again, trying to keep pace with the workflow in preparation for my day off on Friday, yet another reason to get a jump on that column. Nothing but rain and clouds outside, which makes for a decidedly dreary disposition. But, I suppose such an atmosphere is far more conducive to accomplishing tasks on the endless To Do list. Better not to be tempted by the sun’s rays, beckoning you to take an extended lunch. Wednesday… Yet another lovely day in the neighborhood, or so I briefly glimpsed on my way into the office. Word is it’s 66º and sunny. One of these days, this
kind of weather will coincide with a weekend. Maybe. But alas, here I sit at my keyboard, typing away at the local community news and events. Summer fun in the sun can’t come soon enough. Thursday… The eleventh hour. One day short of a deadline; for me, tomorrow will be spent helping to run the Society of Professional Journalists’ Annual Region I Conference, this year hosted by Hofstra University and sponsored by our very own Press Club of Long Island. A full schedule of panels and lectures by some of the region’s finest journalists is on tap, a muchneeded reminder of why it was I became involved in this field to begin with. And so, I’m off. Stay tuned for a full recap of the conference next week!

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults and the second leading cause of death for college students. Additionally, Americans over the age of 65 account for 20% of all suicide deaths.

homecoming skits, Trick or Treat Street, Deck the Halls, Stuff a Bus, food drives, class competition, the Senior Citizen Dinner and countless other activities. Newfield High School senior Jared Prevete currently holds a 92.5417 GPA and will graduate in June 2015 with a total of 35 college credits. While taking three Advanced Placement (AP) courses and three college level courses, Jared also serves on the executive board for multiple clubs and is involved in many others. Jared gives back to his community as the Vice President of the G.O. Through his position, Jared has helped organize community blood drives, food drives and the school’s Holiday Lane and Trick-Or-Treat Street events. In addition, Jared is a member of the leader’s club, Dr. Gerold’s official Leadership Club, the Language Other Than English (LOTE) Honor Society and is a starter for the NHS varsity baseball team. Jared has applied to New York Institute of Technology, New York University, State University of New York at Stony Brook, James Madison University, Molloy College and Stetson College, but has yet to make a decision regarding which school he will attend. Jared plans to study computer science or accounting.
Xander Pinto is described by his teachers at DMS as a student who after spending a week in middle school was already ready for high school. Xander currently maintains a GPA of 97.5 and is an active participant and leader in the classroom. Xander utilizes every free moment he has to read novels and is very active in his soccer league outside of school. He is looking forward to trying out for the DMS soccer team upon entering seventh grade and aspires to be a professional soccer player. Trista Clackett has achieved honor roll for the past two quarters so far as a SMS sixth grader and will likely achieve it for the third quarter as well. Trista is an active member of the science club and is passionate about STEM lessons in the classroom. Trista takes her studies home where she regularly conducts her own science experiments using her own chemistry kit. She aspires to one day be a science teacher herself and hopes to conduct research in chemistry and evolutionary biology in the future. In her spare time, Trista competes on a cheerleading team and is looking forward to trying out for the SMS team next year.

The Middle Country Central School District recently honored four students as the March Students of the Month for their many accomplishments both in the classroom and in the community. Centereach High School (CHS) senior Matthew Capone, Newfield High School (NHS) senior Jared Prevete, Dawnwood Middle School (DMS) sixth grader Xander Pinto and Selden Middle School (SMS) sixth grader Trista Clackett were honored during the month of March. “Matthew, Jared, Xander and Trista take their academic duties one step further by becoming leaders in the classroom and role models for their peers,” said Middle Country Superintendent of Schools Dr. Roberta Gerold. “This month’s group should be commended for going above and beyond what is expected from them and pursuing their academic interests outside of school.” Centereach High School senior Matthew Capone will enter his college career having already completed nine college courses. Capone, a member of the National Honor Society and National Italian Honor Society, plans to attend either John Jay College of Criminal Justice or Hofstra University in the fall. He hopes to pursue a degree in criminal justice, forensic computer science and/ or counter terrorism in pursuit of a job as a Secret Service agent or Homeland Security agent. While balancing a difficult academic schedule, Matthew also devoted much of his time to his duties as General Office (G.O.) president. In this position, Mathew is responsible for planning and organizing activities for his peers including

Helen B. Duffield Elementary School student, Hannah Dunaske, earned 1st place in the annual Child Abuse Prevention Services poster contest. Over 900 entries were submitted from 38 different schools around Long Island, each illustrating the theme of bully prevention. Dunaske’s winning poster will be included in CAPS calendar, which was distributed to all elementary schools and libraries on Long Island during the month of March.

BOWLING FOR A CAUSE - Connetquot Central School District’s OakdaleBohemia Middle School community recently participated in the “Roll for Kevin” bowling event at Sayville Lanes. Members of the OBMS National Honor Society, along with advisor Mrs. Lori Senia, organized the fundraiser to raise money to help Kevin Ferrera, a student who is fighting T-cell lymphoblastic leukemia. The “Roll for Kevin” event sold close to 250 tickets as well as many raffle and 50-50 tickets. The OBMS community raised $15,000 to help Kevin and his family pay for medical expenses.
FACULTY RAISES FUNDS - Middle Country Central School District’s teachers and staff from Eugene Auer and Holbrook Road Elementary Schools recently competed against each other in various activities to help raise money for future student opportunities at both schools and for a student recently diagnosed with cancer. Students participated in an interactive assembly held by author and performer, Lee Knight. The assembly aimed to stress the importance of reading and the imagination and to demonstrate reading as enjoyable. Together they performed original songs to the characters in the books who demonstrated kindness throughout the story.
LEARNING CHINESE CULTURE - Connetquot Central School District Edward J. Bosti fourth and fifth grade students along with C-Quest advisors, Mrs. Lisa Manzo and Mr. Kevin Keane, welcomed Ms. Steiner, an expert on the Chinese culture. Ms. Steiner shared her extensive knowledge of the Chinese culture including history and key terms while working with the students on several traditional art projects. Students asked questions and were able to learn about the authentic cuisine, forms of entertainment and educational opportunities for students their age in China.
JUNIOR CHEFS - A group of students at Connetquot Central School District’s Oakdale-Bohemia Middle School recently won the championship title for the third annual Long Island Junior Chef Competition. The students were required to design a breakfast recipe to include only five healthy main ingredients, to be prepared within 60 minutes and to be adaptable to school cafeterias. Along with the help of the schools Family and Consumer Science teacher and advisor Mrs. Jones, the students were able to create their winning ‘Broccoli, Cheddar and Swiss Spaghetti Frittata’ recipe.

Wilma and Betty, two senior Labrador mixes, spent several months at Little Shelter this past winter. These two wonderful, friendly dogs had lost their home and were living at a town shelter when Little Shelter stepped up and rescued them. They were so attached to one another that Little Shelter knew they had to try to find them placement in the same home; they simply wouldn’t have been happy otherwise. Now, finding a home for one large, senior dog is difficult; finding a home for two is near impossible, but Little Shelter knew they had to try.
Enter Teacher’s Federal Credit Union. TFCU, a great supporter of Little Shelter, offered to run a month-long fundraiser for the Shelter. This is the 5th year that TFCU has run this fundraiser for Little Shelter. Throughout the month, TFCU patrons generously donated - food, blankets, toys and cash all generously provided for the benefit of Little Shelter’s cats and dogs. On February 28th, Little Shelter was asked to bring two dogs to the Smithtown branch as an added attraction to the collection that was being taken. You guessed it, Betty and Wilma were the dogs in attendance, and those girls
know how to work a crowd! In fact, Betty and Wilma had recently participated in a dog fashion show where they were a big hit and a crowd favorite. The TFCU event turned out to be a special day for these two senior dogs, for it was at this event that Betty and Wilma met their new family. One of TFCU’s wonderful patrons saw these girls in the branch and there was an instant connection. After the event, the family visited Wilma and Betty at Little Shelter and decided to adopt them! What a wonderful ending for both the family and for these great dogs.
Project Lifesaver April is not only Autism Awareness Month, it’s typically a time when people begin to spend more time outdoors to enjoy the warmer weather. However, for a parent or guardian of a child with autism, a trip to the local park or downtown might cause significant safety concerns because children with autism have a tendency to wander off. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office offers a program that could help alleviate some of the stress associated with wandering behavior, and Sheriff Vincent DeMarco is urging parents to call his office to learn more about its Project Lifesaver initiative.
Project Lifesaver is a countywide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals if they wander and become lost. Clients wear a personalized one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. Additionally, the Sheriff’s Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in the methods necessary to communicate with a
person who has a cognitive impairment such as Autism, or other mental challenges. “If you or someone you know could benefit from this lifesaving technology, we urge you to call us for more information. It could literally save a life,” said Sheriff DeMarco. To be eligible for Project Lifesaver, clients must be a resident of Suffolk County and have a cognitive impairment diagnosis that is confirmed by a physician. Dancing For Autism Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a causeAutism. Adults served by DDI are partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts for the fourth year to produce Dancing for Autism on Friday, May 15th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $5 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. Raffles will also be available. Dancers will take to the stage with numerous acts including tap dancing, freestyle dance and Irish step pieces. The dance program originated with two devoted DDI staff members whose determination and passion to bring the arts to the
adults served by DDI culminated with this very special collaboration with Vic’s studio. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills development, recreation and job training services to help prepare each individual to become productive members of the community in which they reside. “I would like to acknowledge the entire Adult Day Recreation Program recreation staff for putting on this unique and entertaining event to showcase the abilities of the people we serve,” commented John Lessard, DDI’s Executive Director. “It is an exciting process to watch the collaboration
between DDI and Vic D’Amore’s Dance studio and the sheer enjoyment of everyone involved. Sophia SerlisMcPhillips, the director of the Middle Country Public Library, is one of 12 local leaders who were recently honored with a 2015 Women’s Recognition Award by Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. “I am flattered to be recognized among this prestigious group of female professionals,” stated Serlis-McPhillips.

Ms. Kriegel coordinates all aspects of the creditbearing internship program in Farmingdale’s business management department. Formerly an
intern herself, she has been on staff at Farmingdale for nearly four years. Ms. Kriegel holds a BS in Business Management from Farmingdale. “I am thrilled to receive this award,” she says. “Juggling work and school has been challenging, but through it all I’ve learned how important it is to follow your dreams.” And the best part of her job? “It is a wonderful feeling to mentor students, and help prepare them for the business world.” Jessica Zuniga is the study-abroad advisor and international program coordinator in Farmingdale’s office of international education and programs, and she was recently named Latin American student organization advisor. She has worked at the college for nearly two years, and
during that time she has helped double the number of Farmingdale students studying abroad. She was a study-abroad student herself, spending semesters in Florence, Italy and Barcelona, Spain. She holds a BS in Business Management from Farmingdale. Ms. Zuniga is a member of the college’s Alumni Association Board, and founding chair of the GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) alumni group. She is also a member of the Moxxie Network, a women’s business community comprised of senior-level business and professional women. “To win this award at such an early stage of my career is an honor,” Ms. Zuniga says. “This gives me a sense of affirmation in my role here.”

The event was open to the public and drew hundreds of residents, elected officials and other guests including the Brookhaven Town Council, New York State Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul Association of Secondary as well as former Suffolk School Principals (NASSP), County Executive and recognizes middle level current Suffolk County Historian Peter F. Cohalan. and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.
The celebration recognized the 1655 arrival of the first English settlers on the north shore of the Town. Coming from eastern Long Island and New England, they established their first settlement in Setauket, named after the local Native Americans from whom the land was purchased. In 1686, Governor Thomas Dongan issued a Patent which granted extensive powers to the Town and established a representative form of government. Visit www.

Summer Rec Sachem Community Youth Services provides a five week Summer Recreation Program for youth ages 5-12. The program will run from July 6th through August 6th, Monday to Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Youth will enjoy sports, games, arts and crafts, theme days, shows and workshops. OUTREACH DONATION - Students from Eastern Suffolk BOCES Outreach House donated a planter to Good Samaritan Hospital’s Nutrition and Food Services Department. Fresh herbs will be planted by the students and used to enhance the flavor and presentation of the more than 1,200 meals prepared daily for patients, visitors and staff at the hospital. Outreach House provides education designed to empower students through academic and social growth. A group of 12 students worked together as a team in the design and construction of a teak planter that will grow organic fresh herbs year round.

A genuine camaraderie among employees, moraleboosting and team building are some of the terms heard from representatives of several companies who have joined the annual WalkRun for Friends of Karen at the Long Island Marathon. This year’s events, 5K WalkRun on Saturday, May 2nd, at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, and 10K, half and full marathons scheduled for Sunday, May 3rd, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, will again be filled with the enthusiasm of hundreds of Friends of
Karen supporters – among the thousands of Marathon participants – being able to help families who turn to the tri-state organization for assistance when a child is diagnosed with cancer or another life-threatening illness. Mary Bhullar, President of Worldnet International, an express courier service headquartered in Springfield Gardens, learned about Friends of Karen when one of her employees saw hundreds of people wearing the team shirts out on the course of
the Long Island Marathon in 2011. Together they decided to motivate employees to sign up to help raise funds and awareness for Friends of Karen and for the past three years many of their employees trained together to do the 10K event. “Each year, post-event, there was not only a sense of accomplishment in helping the families of Friends of Karen but a significant positive shift in how our staff were relating to one another.” This year, soon after the employees starting mapping out their training
course, one of them shared that a colleague had a child diagnosed with cancer and sent them directly to Friends of Karen for assistance. “We witnessed first-hand how they respond so earnestly to families in need,” said Ms. Bhullar. Funds raised from the Walk-Run will directly benefit families who are assisted by Friends of Karen’s Family Support program which helps with household bills, health insurance, medical copayments prescriptions, hospital lodging costs,

Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a life-threatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. Help Stamp Out Hunger From Alaska to Florida, and from Maine to Hawaii, on Saturday, May 9th, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers across the country will visit homes and businesses in every city, suburb and town in America to collect food for what is the nation’s largest food drive. “This is it. The day to make a difference. If ever you’ve thought about helping your community, the time is now. Be a part of something big,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, feeding and supporting 316,000 Long Islanders annually, is proud to announce that it has been chosen by the National Association of Letter
Carriers and the U.S. Postal Service to be the Long Island region’s sole recipient of its “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens
throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. It’s that simple.” “The harsh winter weather this year presented Long Islanders experiencing hunger with many challenges, including pay loss due to the weather, making it an even more difficult time to put food on the table,” explained Dresner. “This, coupled with the usual springtime need for food following the depletion of our holiday donations,
makes this year’s Stamp Out Hunger food drive essential.” Since the inception of Stamp Out Hunger in 1992, over 1.3 billion pounds of food have been collected by letter carriers in the United States. Locally, last year Long Islanders donated more than 326,000 pounds of food and this year, Island Harvest expects a similar amount to be collected by letter carriers on 2,219 carrier routes across Long Island. “The most trusted federal employees, U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are routinely involved in many community outreach initiatives, and often, form very close relationships with their customers,” said Walter Barton, President, NALC.
“It is this connection they have within their communities that compels them to want to help make a difference.” Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest food drive that has been taking place now for 23 years. “Stop and Shop is pleased to be a Grand Sponsor of Stamp Out Hunger and support this important initiative, along with the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service to benefit Island Harvest Food Bank.
