Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently hosted its first annual “Heritage Museum Day,” inviting students’ family members and Connetquot High School students to the school in an effort to promote a widespread cultural understanding and respect for the many customs throughout the world. Throughout the halls of
the school, each classroom featured a foreign learning environment where Connetquot High School volunteers were able to shed light onto customs and activities that the younger students were able to enjoy. Such presentations included information about the World Cup and why so many countries hold the sport of soccer dear to their heart, art lessons in the style of the ever popular

Sharing Culture Japanese Anime and fun classroom activities which taught children how to perform a traditional Greek dance. Additionally, the school’s gymnasium was transformed into a cultural museum, where multiple displays were set up with factual information about countries around the world, including but not limited to China, Israel, France and Germany.

The Councilman and the students discussed local government projects going on in our community and he gave them the opportunity to ask questions. On March 30th, Supervisor Ed Romaine and the Town Board honored the recipients of the 2017 Women’s Recognition Awards at the 31st annual ceremony held at Brookhaven Town Hall. The event was sponsored by the Town’s Office of Women’s Services. Nominated by members of the community, the winners either live or work in the Town of Brookhaven and have demonstrated excellence in a variety of areas. Night of Accomplishments The Connetquot High School Boys Varsity Wrestling team was recognized for their accomplishments this winter season, as they finished with an impressive final record of 13 wins and three losses, and advanced to the “Final Four” in the Suffolk Dual Meet Championship Tournament. Additionally, freshman Steven Wilkinson, along with seniors Danny Colondona, Paul North and Jeffrey Brown, were named All-County wrestlers based on their athletic talents. The Connetquot High School Girls Varsity Track and Field team was also commended for their record-breaking season, both on the individual and team levels. By the end of the 2016-2017 season, the team had been named League 2 Champions, runners-up of Suffolk County Large Schools and ranked third on Long Island by Newsday. Boys Varsity Track and Field athlete Christian Forletto was recognized by the board of education for his impressive times set on the field this season. Due to their sportsmanship and overall performance in the water, the Connetquot High
School Boys Swimming team was awarded with the Outstanding Sportsmanship honors from Section XI Athletics. Additionally, freshman Grady Olsen, Cyle Andrade and Cole Andrade, along with sophomore Dylan Macejko and juniors Joe Amarando, Mike Agrillo, Frank Messina and Tommy Loos, all qualified for the Suffolk County Meet. Ninthgrader Grady Olsen qualified for the NYS Qualifier based on his times. The Connetquot High School Varsity Cheerleaders had an extraordinary season, taking home highranking titles at every competition attended this season. Amongst their most impressive accomplishments on their long list this season, the cheerleaders competed at UCA High School Nationals on February 11th-12th in Orlando, Florida, advancing through the semifinal round and hitting their best two performances of the season while there. On February 25th, the cheerleaders competed in the Suffolk County Championships in the Large Varsity Division for the first time in school history and placed second.
Just Ducky
Students at Edward J. Bosti and Sycamore Avenue Elementary Schools were recently able to spend time with two different kinds of ducks – real-life baby ducklings and Long Island Ducks mascot Quackerjack. Pre-schoolers in Amy Doerring’s class at Edward J. Bosti Elementary School were visited by Victoria
Ziglioli, Connetquot High School alumna and daughter of teaching assistant Linda Ziglioli, and her two baby Peking ducklings. The students and staff members were able to pet the beautiful baby ducks, who came to the school in partnership with the class’s springthemed unit of study. Long Island Ducks
team mascot Quackerjack travelled to Sycamore to greet students before they prepared to go home for the day. Quackerjack, along with his friend Drew Mongiello, stopped by to remind students and staff that Sycamore students will be singing the national anthem at the team’s May 5th game against the Maryland Blue Crabs.

The March 28th Connetquot Central School District Board of Education meeting highlighted multiple students throughout the district for both their academic and athletic capabilities. To begin the night’s recognitions, Sycamore Ave. Elementary School fifth-grader Julia Zachmann and fourth-grader Carson Turissini were awarded with tokens of appreciation for being declared school champions of the Town of Islip’s annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored by Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, the sharpshooter challenge encourages children in local schools to improve their basketball skills while serving as a reminder to “Just Say No to Drugs”. Idle Hour Elementary School fifth-grader Andrew Mullane was recognized by the board of education for receiving the “Early Act Award” from the Rotary Club of Sayville. This award was presented to Andrew in honor of him being a student with a creative mind and strong leadership skills, which benefit both his school and community.

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps
the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

Middle Country Central School District students in Centereach High School’s College Business Law class recently took an educational trip to the Suffolk County Courts in Central Islip. The visit, coinciding with the class’ curriculum of the court system, served as an opportunity for students to experience first-hand the items they have been
learning in the classroom. The class received a tour of the courtroom and were guided through the roles and responsibilities of all the individuals involved in a court hearing or trial. A court officer also treated Mr. Bradley’s class to a guided tour of the courthouse – allowing students to explore the cell block, the judge’s chamber and the jury deliberation
Lesson in Etiquette room. Wrapping up the action packed day, students had the opportunity to sit in on the arraignment process and watch a prosecutor and defense attorney debate their cases. The Middle Country Central School District continually offers students opportunities that bring learning to life.
Middle Country Central School District students from Newfield High School and Centereach High School recently participated in a dining etiquette lesson at Pollo Rico in Centereach. The dinner, organized by the District’s Business Advisory Board, invited students in the Career Technical Education (CTE)
program for an evening of great food and tips on how to present oneself while dinning in a professional setting. Students dressed in business attire and learned the rules of proper dining etiquette from Linda J. Williams, M.Ed. Certified Etiquette Consultant and Trainer. Williams walked students through

of C-Quest advisors Lisa Manzo and Kevin Keane, C-Quest classes are introduced to several foreign languages over the course of the program. Within the classes, students are introduced to the French, Spanish, Italian and German languages and culture, as they spend a few weeks learning each new
language. Connetquot’s C-Quest program is dedicated to enhancing the educational experience of fourth-andfifth grade students. Based at the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School, the C-Quest program services the needs of approximately 140 students throughout the district.

initiative spearheaded by Connetquot High School Special Education teacher Peggy Dinkleman and the Blue Star Mothers of America organization. The national Blue Star Mothers of America was formed in 1942, while America was deeply involved in World War II.
Today, Blue Star Mothers do what they can to support those who are in the service. Members spread awareness, attend local fairs and events, collect donations and continue to remind our servicemen and women that they are appreciated and respected.

Another Term Islandia Village Mayor Allan M. Dorman and Deputy Mayor Mike Zaleski were sworn in for another term during a special ceremony on April 4th. Mayor Dorman was first elected in 2005. Mr. Zaleski was elected in 2009. They were joined by Burhan Kisla, who was recently
elected to his first term as Village Trustee. On March 21st, Mayor Dorman was re-elected with 66% of the vote, defeating challenger Neil Munro, 507-258. Mr. Kisla and Mr. Zaleski were the top two vote-getters in a field of four Trustee candidates, with 487 and 484 votes,
respectively. They defeated incumbent Trustee Diane Olk, who had 278 votes, and challenger Mario Carbellano, who received 275 votes. The terms for Mayor and Village Trustee are four years each.
