with Jamie Lynn Ryan I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,
remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!
the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing. There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time. Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that. After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. One day, I’ll learn.

Includes a tour of the Lens Building, which houses the

Friends of Karen
Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) knows how to pull together as an agency. One month of nonstop fundraising efforts across the organization resulted in raising a sum of approximately $11,000 earmarked for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, the non-profit that benefits childhood cancer research and awareness. The Barbering and Cosmetology Programs at the three Academy technical centers, as well
Barbering Teacher Luke Mahoney organized these events across the agency and has been doing so for years. He also recognized eight ESBOCES colleagues for their years of fundraising dedication in a symbolic St. Baldrick’s ceremony that bestowed honorary titles, such as Knight of the Bald Table. The campaign culminated at the final event when ESBOCES COO Dr. Julie Davis Lutz and District Superintendent David Wicks both had “ESB” (for Eastern Suffolk BOCES) engraved at the base of their scalps, shaved their heads, and received a few temporary green shamrock tattoos for this great cause. Said Mahoney, “I am a cancer survivor and a teacher. Doing what I can to put an end to this disease while instilling that vital sense of community within my students, by participating in and promoting events such as these, is essential as an instructor.”

Guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community, the mission of Equity First Foundation is to educate members of the community so they can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. The goal of Dancing for Wellness is to benefit senior communities, as well as to promote programs which assist senior citizens. Crimes against the elderly continue to skyrocket each year as criminals find more ways to carry out both new and old scams, including Medicare and phone hoaxes. In fact, seniors lose billions of dollars a year to scams. Senior citizens should be especially aware of fraud schemes targeting their lifestyle and savings and take care to follow a series of tips to protect themselves and their family members. In observation of National Foreign Language Week held in early March, the Language Other Than English (LOTE) Department at Longwood Junior High School displayed the Teacher’s Discovery Traveling Exhibit, “Art Beyond Borders.” In partnership with Teacher’s Discovery and The International Museum of Twenty-first Century Arts (TIMOTCA), the display was born from a series of international exhibits that had premiered at the headquarters of the United Nations. The goal While building a birdhouse, Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology Carpentry Teacher Fran Nielsen educated students at Bellport Middle School about his path to becoming a Career and Technical Education (CTE) teacher. Animal Science Teacher Laura Donohue had the students’ undivided attention when she told them about the different animals they would be handling in her class such as snakes, ferrets, dogs, chinchillas, hamsters, rabbits, and turtles if they enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center. Students in the Animal Science Program also visit local farms that have horses, llamas, and goats. School Counselor Albana Sela invited the CTE teachers to the Career Day because she believes the information and opportunity to enroll in
the Academy is beneficial. “Good school habits, good attendance, and good behavior translate into good soft skills and career skills,” said Sela. With good school habits in hand, students have the opportunity to go to the Academy and learn by doing. Nielsen said, “I built a birdhouse for you today, but in my class we build a real full-size house each year and we collaborate with other programs like HVAC, electrical, and plumbing because we think it’s important to work together on projects.” Donohue explained the hands-on learning in her class. “You will learn how to properly handle and restrain animals, do physical exams, groom, bathe, feed, and clean cages. You will also learn the body system of animals, do customer service and community service, and

The Mock Trade Show held at Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center was beneficial to the students enrolled in Special Career Education programs because it related to the Advertising Unit they are working on in each of their classrooms. Students from Cosmetology, Canine Careers, Introduction to Baking, Retail Store Services, Food Preparation Services, Welding, Auto Body, Repair and Refinishing, Modern Auto Tech, and Horticulture set up booths in the gymnasium and readied themselves to spread the word about their products or services. Young Professionals Award The Huntington Chamber of Commerce has named Longwood Middle School Learning Specialist Kristina Jubinville one of 30 most influential Long Island professionals under the age of 30 for her commitment, unique talent and philanthropic spirit within Long Island’s communities. This is the first time in the award’s history that a full-time teacher was selected. An alumna and resident of the District, Mrs. Jubinville is involved in numerous activities both during and after
school. She believes firmly in giving back to her community. “I can speak from experience when I say Longwood is the most incredible community to be part of; the compassion that everyone has for one another is unparalleled,” said Mrs. Jubinville. In addition to teaching, Mrs. Jubinville also serves as the coordinator of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Club for girls in fifth- and sixthgrades. Elegance and grace filled the gymnasium at Sachem High School East recently as Lynwood Elementary School fifth-grade students in the Sachem Central School District took part in the Dancing with the Lynwood Stars culminating performance as part of the Dancing Classrooms program. In its ninth year at Lynwood, the 10-week Dancing Classrooms program teaches students
eight ballroom dances, a line dance and a folk dance. As students worked through numerous dance classes, teamwork, respect, self-confidence and nonverbal communication were continuously emphasized by teaching artist Jessica Heins. As a culmination to their study, the students performed the merengue, foxtrot, rumba, waltz, tango, swing and polka for a packed crowd of
family and friends. Each dance was prefaced with a student-led demonstration showcasing the cadences for each step the students learned. In between the performances, students read essays reflecting on their dance experiences. To conclude the funfilled night, members of the audience were asked to join the students in a large group dance demonstration.

Sachem High School East junior William Gavin has been selected as a national youth correspondent and invited to attend the prestigious Washington Journalism and Media Conference held at George Mason University this summer. As part of the conference curriculum, William will participate in hands-on
learning led by industryleading professionals from a number of media backgrounds. The participating youth correspondents will learn through decision-making simulations that prompt students to face similar creative, practical and ethical pressures they will encounter in media and journalism careers.
In addition, the studentparticipants will enjoy expert insight from multiple guest speakers during the weeklong conference. William is enrolled in a number of Advanced Placement classes, including composition, biology and U.S. history. Complementing William’s enrollment in multiple challenging courses is a robust extracurricular résumé, as he is active in the Chess Club and the Diversity Club. Science Erupts Waverly Elementary School fifth-graders in the Sachem Central School District had a blast during a recent STEAM activity exploring the geographic and scientific elements of volcanoes. As part of the students’ study, each group selected a volcano from around the world to research. After students collected information on their chosen volcano they created colorful
informational posters displaying interesting facts and characteristics about the unique landforms. As part of the activity students utilized Play-Doh to sculpt miniature replicas of their volcanoes. To mirror a volcanic eruption, students were provided with a collection of ingredients that they used to conduct experiments to develop a combination that would produce the best eruption. Students
determined a calculated mixture of baking soda and vinegar created the best eruption and added red food coloring to mimic the color of flowing lava. Throughout the activity, each student group referred back to the key principals of the design and engineering process to assess areas that needed improvement and incorporated new design ideas to complete their goals.

Safety Training Workshop As an extension of the district’s proactive and expansive efforts, Connetquot Central School District hosted a training day on April 5th to focus on equipping faculty and staff members with the most up-to-date safety measures and lifesaving techniques. The program included several guest speakers who spoke about national trends, emerging practices and the resources available, both within the district and surrounding community. Presenters included representatives from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Stony Brook University Hospital. Deputy Sheriff Investigator William Weick discussed informative
safety measures specific to an emergency situation within a school building, including the latest evacuation tactics and preventative measures. Additionally, Stony Brook University Hospital Outreach Coordinator Colby Rowe provided attendees with handson lifesaving training as part of the department of Homeland Security “Stop the Bleed” program. According to its website, this national initiative is one that calls for bystanders to become trained, equipped and empowered to help in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. The program focuses on the proper methods to apply tourniquets and
tending to wounds in the case of any emergency. “As school security measures are changing at a rapid rate, it is my utmost priority to ensure our students’ and staff members’ safety,” said Connetquot Central School District Superintendent Dr. Lynda G. Adams. “Our district has remained on the forefront of safety and security training, practices and procedures – including having provided FEMA incident command training. While I take pride in our past and current efforts, we recognize that it is imperative that we continue to embrace emerging and best practices on an ongoing basis.”

Take a Duck to Class
In celebration of fifthgrade student Jacob Rubbo being named a TD Bank “Take a Duck to Class” essay contest, Tamarac Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District was visited by the Long Island Ducks for a special program. As part of the contest, students across Long Island were challenged to write an essay about a hero in their community. Jacob chose to write about a close family friend and Spectrum of Dreams Foundation President Tim Szlosek. After his son Shane was diagnosed with autism, Mr. Szlosek started
the nonprofit organization to help children with special needs acquire the financial resources necessary to enhance their quality of life. Jacob’s essay earned the attention of the contest judges, as he chose to recognize an unconventional type of hometown hero. “Tim made the Spectrum of Dreams Foundation because he wants to help kids like Shane get the resources they need,” Jacob wrote in his essay. “He did something very nice and helpful for kids with autism. I am so happy to know such an amazing person.”
To begin the assembly, all Tamarac students filled the gymnasium to celebrate Jacob’s accomplishment. Following praise from Principal Michael Saidens, Jacob read his essay aloud to the audience of his peers before being presented with a Visa gift card by TD Bank Vice President of U.S. Field Marketing Strategy Eric Fishon and TD Bank Lake Ronkonkoma branch manager Ed Pesapane. Concluding the visit, Jacob and his classmates enjoyed a game of Wiffle ball with Ducks mascot QuackerJack and the Ducks Street Team.
