The March 12 Bayport-Blue Point Board of Education meeting recognized the accomplishments of both students and staff members alike. To begin the evenings recognitions, Academy Street Elementary School special education teacher Jennifer Crispo was named the Teacher of the Month for the month of February. She was met with words
of praise from BayportBlue Point School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy P. Hearney for her accomplishment and presented with a bouquet of flowers courtesy of the board of education. According to a statement prepared by her colleagues, “Ms. Crispo has a wonderful rapport with her students as she genuinely cares about meeting the needs of all her
unique learners. She works hard to modify curriculum, craft creative lessons, and use a variety of strategies to help her students understand content.” Additionally, BayportBlue Point High School varsity wrestling coach Dave Cruz, along with assistant varsity wrestling coach Richard Reilly congratulated James Wilson Young Middle School student Max
Gallagher and Bayport-Blue Point High School student Joe Sparacio for being named All-State Wrestlers. “Exceptional achievements are within reach when we stand tall on a foundation of personal integrity, hard work and unwavering determination,” said coach Cruz. “Max Gallagher and Joe Sparacio exhibited all three aspects to achieve All-State honors this season.”

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
Products used to wash boat hull sand decks often contain toxic ingredients such as chlorine, phosphates and ammonia. Degreasers dry the natural oils fish need for their gills to take in oxygen. For boats that are in the water, use cleaning methods that prevent or contain the release of pollutants to surface waters. Below are a few actions you can take: 1) When possible, remove the boat from the water and perform cleaning where debris can be captured and properly disposed. 2) Use fresh water to clean your boat after every use. 3) Use environmentally friendly cleaning methods and products. Here are a list of a few alternatives to toxic products: Elbow Grease, Hydogen Peroxide, Baking Soda, Salt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baby Oil.
This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, asside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local

Gazpacho A Healthy Favorite
This gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, soy-free and vegan Gazpacho recipe was submitted by Registered Dietician Nutritionist, Lee Cotton, RDN (www. leecottonrdn.com). Lee lives and practices nutritional counseling in Florida, but reads our newspaper online at www.SouthBaysNeighbor.com. For people with dietary restrictions, eliminating certain foods doesn't have to deprive you of flavor, as this recipe for Gazpacho proves! What You Will Need 10 ripe tomatoes, chopped 3 English cucumbers, diced 1 large red onion, diced 1 yellow pepper, seeded and chopped 3 red peppers, seeded and chopped 4 tbs red wine vinegar 2 tbs of olive oil 1 clove garlic, minced ½ cup cilantro chopped 2 limes sliced 1 avocado diced
Salt and Pepper to taste Preparation 1.Place tomatoes, onion, bell peppers, Tabasco sauce and garlic in a food processor and process until smooth. 2. Place all of the cucumbers except ½ cup cucumbers into the blender and process until smooth. 3. Add vinegar and oil and quick process until mixed. 4. Place the mixture in a serving bowl, and stir thoroughly. 5. Cover and refrigerate for an hour or until serving time. 6. Remove from refrigerator and uncover. 7. Add salt and pepper to taste. 8. Place gazpacho into serving dishes. 9. Garnish with remaining cucumbers and cilantro and a piece of lime and 1 t. of avocado. Enjoy! Costa, the T-Birds dribbled, shot and highly enjoyed themselves as they challenged the traveling group of professional athletes/ comedians. The Harlem Wizards are celebrating their 57th year of entertaining, and from the reaction of this Connetquot crowd, it’s easy to see why fans look forward to watching these talented athletes in action. The Wizards were led by talented athletes with appropriate nicknames such as “Big J,” “The Rocketman,” “The Artist” and “LaFiesta.”
Individually, these showmen excelled as student-athletes both at the collegiate level and internationally. Together, as Harlem Wizards, they combine their feats of athleticism with comedy routines that keep the students laughing, as the players go into the crowd to bring students and families alike onto the court to join in the fun. Mr. Pollak extended his thanks to the supportive members of the faculty that took part in the game, along with all of the wonderful fans for their support, and gave a special thanks to the dedicated members of the school’s PTA and President Amy Dowdell.

He started out by going to the various community organizations, introducing himself and letting everyone know about his plans. By: Diane Caudullo We have our fair share of great local car mechanics, but it is the new kid in town that has been caught in the spotlight. Gian Fanelli has recently opened Jaxson’s Automotive, located in the Walmart Shopping center in Centereach, just east of Leslie’s Pool Supply.
Gian runs Jaxson’s as a general maintenance shop, along with his brother BJ. Gian’s stepfather Mark was who he and BJ got their earlier education in mechanics from, and he was part of the original business plan. Unfortunately, Mark has since been involved in a serious motorcycle accident. He is okay but is no longer able to work alongside them. Gian has always stood out
We all know a grand opening is a planned event that is designed to shine a light on yourself, however, in preparation for his grand opening he took things to a higher level. Gian diverted the much needed attention from himself and shifted it to those in need. It was all about Lighthouse Missions, which is an amazing organization that feeds the homeless and less fortunate people living among us.
Doctor for a Day Kindergarten and first-grade classes from Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School recently welcomed Stony Brook Children’s Hospital Trauma Center registered nurse Kristi Ladowski to the school for a fun and informative “Teddy Bear Clinic” event. The students were asked to bring a stuffed animal to school to serve as their “patient” as they worked with Ms. Ladowski
during the clinic, carefully listening as she described important safety lessons to be used at home, at play or in school. The attentive students also listened as Ms. Ladowski described the importance of seat belt safety and using helmets to protect themselves while riding bicycles and skateboards. The students also enjoyed watching an experiment that had two eggs dropped at the same time, in which each egg was into a plastic
bag, but only one egg was protected inside a special “helmet.” As predicted, the unprotected egg did not fare well in the drop, while the protected egg was still in one piece. At the conclusion of the safety demonstrations, the students sat at their desks and played “doctor” using band-aids, gauze, and tongue depressors on their stuffed animals’ “injuries.”

Photo courtesy of the Connetquot Central School District/Joe Maniaci Since then, Gian has doubled down on his commitment to others by continuing to care for Pastor Jim and the other Lighthouse volunteer’s cars whenever they are in need. He also hosts a continual food, toy and coat drive to help meet the demands of the many who would otherwise go without. I also learned that around last Christmas, a family was supposed to pick up their car from Jaxson’s but was not able to pay at that moment… Gian released the car to them at no charge and told them about the great work Lighthouse Missions was doing. He encouraged them to seek some assistance. The family was very grateful and as soon as their rough patch
came to an end they came back and paid their bill. Now we all know a good deed is not done to be boasted about, but sometimes a nice story helps you truly get to know a person! Gian and BJ both share the desire to dispel the old stereotype of the untrustworthy mechanic or that car repairs always cost a fortune. They do honest work for honest pay. There isn’t anything fancy over at Jaxson’s, just good mechanics doing good work and building relationships along the way. Pastor Scott Kraniak of Centereach Bible Church met Gian early on as he opened up Jaxson’s. Pastor Scott, a huge “car
guy” himself, with a love for all things Jeep, has become a regular customer. He and Gian now consider each other friends. The extent of this new friendship was most evident as Pastor Scott recently officiated Gian’s wedding. Gian and his wife Rachel have a beautiful baby girl named Lucy. The purpose behind these spotlight articles is to learn about the people behind your local businesses (and who doesn’t need to know more about their chosen mechanic?). After all, this is someone you need to trust not only for a fair price, but for quality work ensuring your safety. That being said, Jaxson’s is a good choice.

Lessons in Criminal Justice Student-members of the Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Debate Club recently took a field trip to the Cohalan Court Complex located in Central Islip in an effort to generate interest in a possible mock trial team. During their visit, the students took a two-hour tour which included a description of the court room as offered by New York State Court Officer
Evelyn Portes, Outreach Coordinator Kaitlyn Pickford and the Honorable Gaetan B. Lozito, Acting County Court Judge. Additionally, all in attendance went into the holding cells for defendants and witnessed how they are brought into the court house by the Suffolk Sheriff’s Department. Judge Lozito also made mention of how each discussion
between the prosecution and defense attorney over bail mirrors the debate style utilized in the high school’s club. The 10 Debate Club students in attendance were joined by advisers John Limperatos and Sean Meade during the trip, and thanked them for affording them the opportunity to take this highly important field trip.

Travel to Space In coordination with the year’s theme of the 50th anniversary of landing on the moon, students of all grade levels at Connetquot Central School District’s John Pearl Elementary School were recently paid a visit from Cradle of Aviation educator Tim Sarro for an informative presentation on space exploration. Throughout the course
of the assembly, Mr. Sarro spoke to the attentive students about the many aspects of outer space, including how rockets operate, the daily routines of astronauts and scientific facts about the sun and the solar systems’ planets. According to Mr. Sarro, water, food, oxygen, fuel/ power and shelter are absolutely essential to an astronaut in order to
complete their mission while in space, bearing striking similarities to our survival needs here on Earth. Additionally, two student volunteers were asked to mimic the spacesuits that astronauts wear as they geared up with two layers of thick gloves and attempted to tie their shoelaces, both to success.
