SWORN IN - Islandia Village Trustees Patty Peters and Barbara Lacey were sworn in for another term during the April 7th Village Board meeting. They won their respective races in an uncontested election on March 18th. The term for Village Trustee is four years. Ms. Peters has been a Village Trustee since 2007. In 2010, Ms. Lacey was appointed to the Village Trustee post that was vacated by Suellen Leonardo. This is the second election Ms. Lacey has won.

Spring is finally here, The snow is finally clear. We are having fun in the sun, Instead of staying inside and gaining a ton. Spring sports have arrived.

In The Mood By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As a former student of psychology, I am continuously fascinated by those factors which cause a person’s mood to drastically change from one moment to the next, often with no discernable explanation. One minute, happy, positive energy; the next, sullen, negative bitterness. It’s enough to make your head spin. Of course, there are a million factors that could possibly contribute to such sudden alterations in behavior; but, if you’re like me, you immediately look for the root of the problem. Is it my fault? Did I do something, say something, unknowingly

cause some perceived slight…what? Chances are, it’s something else entirely. (Read: Everything is not always about you!) The thing is, when you’re in a foul frame of mind, it’s difficult to see beyond the black cloud. Best everyone stay out of your way until the storm has passed, as you can’t be held accountable for your tone, whether impatient, annoyed, indifferent… in short, anything but friendly. Negativity breeds more negativity, and those who dare to cross paths with those in such a state are just asking for trouble. And so the cycle continues. Day after day of trying to dodge the slings and arrows of those who

There comes a point when you need to avoid being sucked into the cycle. I often envy those who seem to exude nothing but positive vibes, who appear to be in a constant state of contentment. Is it genuine? How do they achieve such a mentality and, better yet, maintain it continuously? I suppose, even if it is merely a means of keeping up appearances, such a skill should be applauded. Fake it ‘til you make it, as they say. Perhaps they should hold a class on that.

ProStart Invitational Five female Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology students from the Milliken Technical Center Culinary Arts Program competed on March 13th and 14th in the 2015 New York State ProStart Invitational at the Culinary Institute of America, Hyde Park, and captured third place.

Their third place finish was commended by an Invitational staff member who stated, “For a team to enter this competition for the very first time in the 12 years it’s been running, and to place third, is simply unheard of! Fabulous job!” The students were required to create a professional business

proposal for a restaurant they themselves would be interested in opening. Together this team of five created a restaurant called Husked, which centered itself around gourmet popcorn as both main courses and complementing sides. The students were required to present this proposal to

12 judges and respond to questions afterwards. In addition, the competition included a critical thinking component in which three judges asked a series of questions based on scenarios that business owners are likely to encounter. The students were required to work

together to provide solutions and prevention plans. Finally, the students were pressed to defend costing and food portion questions presented by two additional judges. These competitors worked extremely hard on their business plan and the payoff was well worth it. The girls received

thousands of dollars in scholarship money to several different colleges and universities. The students also toured the campus of nearby Marist College and visited the famous Eveready Diner, featured on Food Network’s Diners, DriveIns and Dives.

Keeping America Beautiful In the spirit of Earth Day, April 22nd, Keep Islip Clean (KIC), a certified affiliate of the national organization Keep America Beautiful, and not-forprofit, 501c3, community service organization, is participating again in the Great American Cleanup. They will be working tirelessly throughout all of April and May, at various locations throughout the Town of Islip, to clean up and beautify our community. Ferrari, students learned about drunk and distracted driving and the dangers they present when behind the wheel. Students experienced the effects by wearing “driving while impaired goggles,” which simulate various levels of intoxication by blood alcohol content (BAC). Students performed (and failed at) a variety of normal tasks in the

classroom, then took to the road to see how they fared on the obstacle course. Law Enforcement Teacher Anthony Biancardi said, “Students quickly realized that drunk driving and distracted driving are dangerous and deadly, and are committed to not engage in either of the illegal acts.”

On Friday, March 13th, the Connetquot Public Library participated in the Advanced Battle of the Books held at Connetquot High School. The “battle” is a county wide inter-library competition consisting of teams answering trivia questions based on selected teen novels. This year’s titles were Anna and the French Kiss, Cinder and Where Things Come Back. La Neuf Connetquot Princesses tied for eighth place out of twenty-one teams led by Teen Librarian Angela Breslin.
