New Cultural Experiences

onnetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School third and fourth-grade students recently had the opportunity to experience new cultures with international visitors. Students in the fourth grade were visited by a curator from the Maritime Museum, who provided educational projects for the students to work on, including making a working lighthouse made of a tiny battery, index card and metal fibers.

Eerie - the only word to describe that morning. The morning sun was slowly inching toward the gray sky, revealing a light fog. The mist seemed to grow thicker as the sun crept through its tendrils. Glancing up and down the block, I crossed the street to wait for my bus to come and whisk me off to the hellhole known as high school. The screen of my phone illuminated the vapor that twirled around me, coiling itself around me like a snake squashing its prey. A twig snapped on the lawn behind me, causing me to spin around, getting whipped by my own cherry hair. Squinting my eyes, I scanned the dying lawn, but saw nothing. Unable to shake the thought of someone standing in the darkness, watching me, I stepped further into the protection of the towering street lamp. The dusty yellow glow swallowed me willingly as I wrapped my arms protectively around myself. Antsy, I leaned forward, allowing myself to see past all the parked cars to see the yellow lights of the bus working its way toward me. A sense of relief flooded me. Dropping my guard, a loud banging noise sounded behind me, causing me

to jump, stirring up the fog around my sneakers. Glancing over my shoulder, I noticed a white gate swinging in the wind, crashing into its post. The squeaking of tires drew my attention back to the street. In front of me stood the school bus with its doors wide open, welcoming me with a blast of heat. I slid into the seat high above the back wheel, before glancing once more at the lawn to see if anyone was there. A dark figure moved closer to the sidewalk. The eyelids of the being opened, revealing glowing yellow eyes that latched onto mine the second they were scanning the world around them. A faint memory of piercing gold eyes studying me ran through my head at the speed of light so I could not even visualize what the owner of the one-of-a-kind orbs was. The bus began to roll away, but my eyes were glued to the golden ones hidden in the fog. When we rounded the corner, my contact was broken without my consent. The memory began to play again as I leaned back into my seat. A square jaw. Smooth almond skin. Sun-kissed hair. I knew those eyes. It was –

I was summoned to compose this week’s column, something about “deadlines” and this thing called “Seasons™ Magazine,” whatever that is. Word is, my Human was especially overwhelmed and couldn’t think of anything creative to write. My Human rarely moves my new home anymore, so my biggest adventure is pretty much watching her occasionally cook. Speaking of, there are also several tasty recipes to be found in the pages of Seasons™, for those culinary sorts. Who doesn’t love a good meal, right? I know I do. Several per day, in fact. Heck, I’d eat once an hour if she served me. But I digress. Back to the magazine. There are features on Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Memorial Day, tips on eating healthy and

getting in shape for bathing suit season and… well, you’ll have to read it yourself – I only made it past the Table of Contents. Tiny brain = short attention span. All I know is dinner has been exceptionally late these last several weeks as my Human worked tirelessly to finish putting together the editorial content. It had better be good! And so, once again, I swim in to save the day. Buddy to the rescue! Because, really, who wouldn’t love an endorsement from everyone’s favorite Betta? Effective April 1st, 2016, the Department in partnership with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (“LICADD”) will operate a 24/7 substance abuse hotline – 631.979.1700 - to link callers to appropriate treatment. All callers will be screened by a certified medical professional and referred to a local provider. Follow-up will be done to ensure timely access to care. Local providers through the Suffolk County Communities of Solution have been instrumental in the development of the initiative and are committed to partnering with LICADD to get callers into care as soon as possible. This hotline is available to those in crisis, contemplating sobriety or to guide family and friends who may have a loved one suffering from addiction.

Connetquot Central School District’s Edward J. Bosti Elementary School 3rd and 4th grade students recently had the opportunity to experience new cultures with international visitors. Students in the 4th grade were visited by a curator from the Maritime Museum of West Sayville, who provided educational projects for the students to work on, including making a working lighthouse’ made of a tiny battery, index card and metal fibers

to celebrate Long Island history. Students in the 3rd grade were visited by Australian native Mr. Chris Pitkin. Mr. Pitkin entertained students with stories, photos and artifacts from Australia to immerse students in his culture. Students learned about the country, animals, plants and aboriginal citizens. Students also had the opportunity to observe traditional boomerangs and didgeridoos, the world’s oldest wood

instruments. The visit concluded with students learning about the language of native Australians. Following the visit from international guests, Edward J. Bosti Elementary School Principal Dr. Gail Cholden held a Principal’s Challenge where Edward J. Bosti students and their parents created items using only cardboard and tape. The creations were put on display in the school for the whole community to see.

By: Shirley Koval Lieberman Spring has sprung, so why haven’t I? The earth is revitalized. Everywhere I look, there are buds bursting to show off their finery. Where is my photosynthesis? If I get too much sun, I get more wrinkles, burnt skin, cancer. No raking or thatching will help me...oh no! The gardeners come and look about. Oh yes my dear, you need some chemicals to kill the weeds, and seeds to fill in the bald spots of grass. Great idea, here comes the retin A, the alphahydroxyl and this and that. The wrinkles keep coming. The hair gets thinner and grows in all the wrong places. And the garden looks great! The trees grow tall and need a trimming. I grow short, I’m never winning. The colors are glorious, the reds, the purples, the whites and yellows. My colors all come out of a jar, a brush, a pencil. IT JUST ISN’T FAIR!

The Connetquot Senior Citizen Council is an organization comprised of dedicated volunteers who provide increased opportunities for Connetquot students to learn and grow. Sponsored by the Connetquot High School Musical Theatre Club, district senior citizens were invited

to enjoy “High School Musical” followed by dinner and dessert at the school’s cafeteria. This was the 13th consecutive senior citizen “Dinner and a Show” event, organized by Director of Pupil Personnel Ms. Gail E. Santo.

DINNER AND A SHOW - Connetquot Central School District’s High School Musical Theatre Club recently performed High School Musical for the Connetquot Senior Citizen Council and its affiliated senior clubs as part of the school’s 13th annual “Dinner and a Show” event. Local senior citizens watched the play and ate dinner at Connetquot High School as part of a District community outreach initiative.

Gala & Fashion Show The Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children (CFAC) recently welcomed faculty, administration, family and friends to its annual Community Honors Gala & Fashion Show. Board of Education President Mylnn Auglis joined Connetquot Superintendent Lynda G.

Adams and President of the CFAC Board of Directors Dr. Gail Cholden to honor William J. Lindsay Founder’s Award winners Joseph Maniaci and Peter Leis for their positive work on behalf of Connetquot students. More than 350 guests attended to support the honorees and donate funds

for grants to help purchase school supplies, support student assemblies and provide training for the benefit of Connetquot students. The William J. Lindsay Founder’s Awards were presented by Legislator William J. Lindsay III.

Mother nature seems nearer somehow, beckoning us to spend time outdoors as each day allows. Though there is beauty and wonderment in all seasons for sure, Spring is that colorful, fresh aired awakening that can leave us in awe. May the brand new season shine brightly for all!

Projects & Services Fair The Middle Country Public Library will host the Calling All Boomers and Seniors Products and Service Fair on Thursday, April 21st. WOMAN OF THE YEAR - Today, Family Residences and Essential Enterprises (FREE) announced that Sue Regan, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Service Coordinator was honored as “Community Service Woman of the Year” by the Town of Brookhaven Office of Women’s Services.Sue, a resident of Shirley, was nominated for this award by individuals that she supports as part of FREE’s TBI Service program, as well as colleagues and supervisors. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking volunteers to participate in an online survey about their experiences in a breast cancer support group. “The purpose of this study is to better understand the long-term benefits as identified by participants in breast cancer support groups,” says Erin Nau, LCSW, who is conducting the survey with the Breast Cancer Program’s director

Hillary Rutter, LCSW. The survey will identify common reasons for attending a support group, their identified benefits, overall experiences and the long-term impact on their survivorship. “Identifying these factors will allow breast cancer agencies to plan and facilitate more sustainable support groups,” says Rutter. Anyone who is over the age of 18 and has ever been part of a breast cancer support group, past or present, may

participate. All information is confidential. The survey should take five to ten minutes. SUNY’s Highest Honor Twelve students from Suffolk County Community College have earned The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence that acknowledges students who have demonstrated and been recognized for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives including leadership, campus involvement, community service, arts (creative or performing), athletics, and/or career achievement. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by the State University of New York. The students were presented with the awards by SUNY Chancellor Dr. Nancy L. Zimpher at a gala ceremony at the Empire Plaza Convention Center in Albany. The Suffolk County Community College students are among nearly 250 students from 64 SUNY campuses to receive the distinguished award, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This year’s award recipients,” Dr. McKay said, “represent examples of remarkable academic achievement, creativity and commitment. I and the college community congratulate this year’s awardees who have strived to achieve and earned our system’s highest student

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco welcomed fourteen new recruits to the rank of Deputy Sheriff during a graduation ceremony held at the Suffolk County Police Academy in Brentwood, New York on April 1st, 2016. As recent graduates of the Suffolk County Police Academy, the new officers successfully navigated the academy’s rigorous six and a half

month training program. As officer candidates, they were required to successfully complete a variety of classroom and field instruction including firearm safety and handling, contraband control, search and seizure operations, accident investigations, emergency vehicle use and a rigorous program of physical fitness training and testing. Sheriff DeMarco offered the following statement

following the ceremony: “This is an outstanding class of new Deputy Sheriffs, and I have no doubt they will serve our county with honor and professionalism. Their futures are bright and the residents of Suffolk County are fortunate to have these brave men and women as part of our family of law enforcement professionals.”

SPARC Celebration On March 30th, the 10th Annual SPARC (Special Performance/ Achievement Recognition and Commendation) celebration was held at Centereach High School. Awards were presented to Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) employees who were
