City Strolls Springtime in New York. These words bring to mind many fond memories of days spent adventuring through Central Park and traversing the city streets from the upper west side all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge and back again. It’s true what they say that you can literally spend an entire day in just a few square blocks and still not manage to see even a fraction of what that neighborhood has to offer. While I have resided within a mere hour’s drive of Manhattan for the entirety of my life, I am ashamed to say there are countless landmarks and tourist attractions I have yet to take the opportunity to appreciate. In recent years, I have traversed miles of city blocks on foot with one particularly adventurous friend for various shenanigans, some of which

have been documented in past columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are

activities to indulge in during any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

Leadership Day On Tuesday, March 27th, Ridge Elementary School students showcased their leadership skills to members of the Longwood Board of Education and Central Administration, teachers, elected officials, civic leaders and community members at their 2nd annual Leadership Day. The program is a schoolwide initiative centered on The Seven Habits of Happy Kids which provides children with the tools necessary to develop their leadership skills in school, as well as in all aspects of their lives. Students in grades K-4

volunteered for positions including greeters, tour guides, panel participants, station leaders, and shared information about how The Seven Habits impacts their daily activities. Others shared progress toward their learning goals, completed learning activities, and performed songs about leadership. “Leadership Day provides our students with the opportunity to demonstrate their developing confidence through school tours, classroom visits, and musical performances,” said Ridge Elementary Principal Janine Rozycki.

“Our K-4 students actively contributed to the planning and development of this important event, and we are so proud of these young leaders.” Funded through the District’s School Climate Transformation Grant, the Leader in Me program teaches students to lead their lives with confidence and independence while working well with others to make meaningful contributions at school, home and in the community. The initiative is in 2,000 elementary and middle schools across the United States, Canada and around the world.

Creative Fundraising As the Connetquot community gears up for the second annual Relay for Life event, Connetquot High School Principal Ken Costa recently helped to raise awareness by being taped to a wall by staff and students during the “Duct Tape the Principal” fundraiser. On Wear Purple Day, an event coordinated by Connetquot High School

Civic Club and advisers Michelle Goodwin and Gina Senft, students, faculty, and staff came together to celebrate cancer survivors, to support those currently battling the disease, and to honor those who have lost the fight. Students and staff members donated $1 in exchange for a strip of tape, which they used to secure Mr. Costa to the wall. This fun activity

raised $200 for the cause. Connetquot’s Relay for Life Event will take place on June 8th, from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., at the high school track. Anyone seeking additional information about the event, including signing up to participate or make a donation, can visit: www.relayforlife.org/ connetquotny.

Sleeping in the mist of the hauling wind, the chill and the frost rejuvenating spirits contained. There is a comfort as we nest beneath the snow and the soil, waiting until Spring is ready to soar; tiger, iris and even daffodils, perennials of all shapes and hues. We rest, we nourish and we wait for the first glance of Spring break. When it arrives, life awakens with rays of light that nurture, pushing away the cold storm, gracing you with a spectrum of rainbows. Spring

Four Seneca Middle School students from the Sachem Central School District turned up the heat as they used their superb cooking skills to secure a first-place finish at the eighth annual Junior Iron Chef competition held at Whole Foods Market in Lake Grove. For the third consecutive year, Seneca students finished first among countless junior chefs from across Long Island. All middle and high school-age students came to the competition with a prepared recipe and cooked their dish in the allotted one-hour cook time. The educational event encourages students to learn and execute the culinary skills necessary to prepare dishes essential

for a healthy lifestyle. The competition promotes the use of local food to support farmers and the environment. Students are encouraged to create new healthy vegetarian or vegan-based options that can be easily implemented into the school cafeteria menu. Each recipe was judged on taste, presentation, creativity, use of local ingredients, use of USDA ingredients, healthy choices and cafeteria readiness. Each team worked closely with its family and consumer science teachers to develop recipes and practiced for many hours leading up to the contest. Team Golden Girls was named the first-place finisher after presenting its winning dish, the Jardin Burrito – “jardin”

Top Finish for Chefs translates to “garden” in Spanish. It was filled with eggs, guacamole, Monterey jack cheese, peppers, onions, black beans and corn and was paired with a delicious mango salsa. In addition, Team Greek Goddesses placed third with a Greek omelet coined Demeter’s Dish that was filled with potatoes and paired with tzatziki sauce. Placing in fourth was the final Seneca team, the Slice and Dicers, which received a special award for its teamwork, order and professionalism. “Congratulations to all of our students for their hard work and dedication,” District Chairperson for Family and Consumer Science Mary Louise Faller said. “It was a great day for Sachem.”

The tree I love, she stands so tall. In the Autumn, all of her leaves do fall. Now in December, I take a glance and see snow has covered each and every branch. In the Spring, on her rebirth, tiny buds I see each day. I wait and look each and every day for the buds to say Spring is here. The birds have time to nest, the squirrels frolic up and down. Getting Seussical The 45 fourth- and fifth-grade participants of Helen B. Duffield’s Drama Club recently put on a wonderful performance of the Dr. Seuss themed musical, “Seussical,” before a cheering crowd. Under the direction of teachers Karen Pitka and Michael Innace, the young performers rehearsed twice a week after school for about 10 weeks leading up to the performance.

This production was brought to life with assistance from the Connetquot Foundation for the Advancement of Children, as a grant was awarded and used to purchase the “Seussical” show kit, which included scripts and the musical accompaniment. Additionally, with generous support of the school’s PTA, the colorful world of Dr. Seuss came alive

through the use of props and scenery decorations. The show starred Adam Aurelio as Horton the Elephant; Molly Murphy as JoJo; Ava Ross, Emily Sherman, Athena Raimondi as Cats in the Hat and Lily Jonas as Gertrude McFuzz. Additional students supported these actors throughout the production and helped to add many comedic elements to the show.

Healthy Lifestyles As part of the district’s commitment to health education and equipping students with the skills necessary to lead healthy lifestyles, Connetquot Central School District’s Ronkonkoma Middle School students recently attended an informative program on the dangers of vaping – an electronic smoking activity that has become a cause for concern on the national

level. During the assembly, which was provided by Suffolk County Police Officer Wendy Verlotte, the students learned that although marketed as being safe, vaping is in fact a highly dangerous activity. Officer Verlotte explained that while the official FDAapproved study won’t be available to the public until 2022, researchers have found that the e-liquids

and vape juices contain harmful chemicals such as lead, formaldehyde and various other toxins – reinforcing why it should still be avoided entirely. The program coincided with the district’s robust health curriculum, which focuses on educating students about the dangers of destructive decisions and teaching them proactively to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Car-less Long Island founder and chair Sylvia Silberger of Hempstead. “Clearly it is much more environmentally friendly and bicycle commuters are able to incorporate a healthier active life-style into their daily routine. But also, it reduces vehicular congestion, benefitting all motorists, and many studies have shown that walk- and bike-ability helps local businesses thrive.” Silberger says there are many Long Islanders who need alternative forms of transportation because do not drive or own their own cars. “We all benefit if everyone as access to the transportation necessary to survive in this world,” she added Car-less Long Island (CLLI) was founded in the summer of 2015 as a project of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. “It seems I have often found myself in conversations

with other Long Islanders who would like to be able to get around without a car, but are frustrated by the danger and inconvenience inherent alternative modes of transportation,” says Silberger. She founded CLLI to counter the “nihilistic feeling that this is just how Long Island is – we are a car-culture and that will never change.” Silberger is optimistic that the Bike-to-Work Parade will allow Long Islanders who would like Long Island to be a more bikefriendly community realize that they are not alone. Participation in the parade is free, but participants are encouraged to register in advance at www.CarLessLI.org/parade2018. The Long Island alternative transportation advocacy organization, Car-less Long Island, is holding its second annual Long Island “Bike-to-Work Parade” on Saturday, April 28th. Gathering for the parade begins as 9 a.m. at Hofstra University’s North campus. The parade will follow a 6.5-mile loop beginning and ending at Hofstra University. There will be a route for pedestrians, disabled participants, cyclists with younger children and cyclists who simply would prefer a shorter ride. Participants are encouraged to dress up and adorn their bicycles. Survivor Visits Seneca

Eighth-grade students at Seneca Middle School in the Sachem Central School District recently attended a captivating assembly program presented by Holocaust survivor Irving Roth. As a young boy, Mr. Roth was separated from his family and taken to Auschwitz, where he was forced by Nazi soldiers to work long hours with very limited food. Mr. Roth survived his time at Auschwitz but was transported to

Buchenwald, another concentration camp that was liberated in 1945. Mr. Roth spoke with students about the numerous social injustices he endured when German soldiers took over Czechoslovakia and how his family was forced into hiding in Hungary. His stories depicted the horrible living conditions he faced during his time at Auschwitz and how his ordinary way of living was taken from him by Nazi soldiers.

Following the assembly, Mr. Roth joined a small group of students for refreshments and answered studentprepared questions about his experiences. Students asked about his connection with other survivors, family and current world issues. The visit from Mr. Roth serves as an excellent introduction to upcoming lessons on social injustice as part of the humanities unit.

On Friday, March 23rd, Connetquot Public Library teens took part in the 2018 Advanced Battle of the Books held at Connetquot High School. A countywide competition held for teens in grades 9-12, libraries across Suffolk County participate in this challenging and rewarding endeavor designed test their literary knowledge. Teams answer trivia questions based on three different books and score points for their team with each correct answer. This year’s books were Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley, Tell Me Three Things by Julia

Buxbaum and Starflight by Melissa Landers. Connetquot’s team, The Wesley Crushers, met and prepared regularly for Advanced Battle. The judges awarded them “Best Delivery of the Answers.” Always proud of her team, Teen Librarian Angela Breslin has guided Connetquot’s teams through many competitions. This year, Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira also served as a judge. Advanced Battle fosters a love of reading, establishes an appreciation for different genres, and most importantly encourages

sportsmanship as well as friendship. According to e.e. Cummings, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” Many of the teens who participate are involved in the library’s Teen Advisory Board, take part in community service projects, assist in various library programs, all in addition to school and a myriad of other activities. Teens are a vital and natural resource in our community. The library is glad to be part of their journey and is extremely proud of their achievements.

Spring Egg Hunt family members, had the opportunity to play games and win prizes before the egg hunt began. Throughout the course of the day’s activities, the young students were also given the opportunity to have their photos taken with the “Spring Bunny.” Additional funds raised from the $5 admission fee are applied to future

events such as senior day, fall pep rally, the homecoming parade and safe Halloween. In addition to this successful spring event, the Connetquot High School Student Government actively supports local food pantries and provides assistance to families in need.

On Tuesday evening, March 27th, the Connetquot Public Library hosted a fun-filled family program. Designed for parents and children to enjoy some special time together, everyone painted and decorated eggs with

rich and vibrant colors. Families also enjoyed searching the library for eggs filled with mysterious goodies. Children’s Librarian Dina Oliveira thanks the teen volunteers who helped to hide the eggs and

Athletes Helping Athletes Members of the Connetquot High School Athletes-Helping-Athletes club recently paid the fifth-graders of Cherokee Street Elementary School a visit, as they engaged the young students in a variety of leadership and team-building activities. The visitors also took time to explain the many advantages of participating in extra-curricular programs, such as music, band and sports. The high school students

explained to the fifthgraders that their journeys through the upper grade levels will consist of more demanding schedules, along with the option to explore new clubs or try out for athletic teams. Additionally, each of the visitors talked about how they learned to believe in themselves and continue to work to reach their goals. The Connetquot High School Athletes Helping Athletes club consists of

more than 60 serviceminded students who pledge to stay away from alcohol and drugs, and to share their experiences with elementary school students. For nearly 20 years, AHA has positively impacted the Connetquot community by inspiring high school students to be leaders through sports while also working as role models to fifth-grade students.

Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as meal delivery programs, transportation options, home modification

The National Eye Institute, part of NIH, reminds women, especially those over age 40, to make their eye health a priority by taking five simple steps to protect their sight. Get a dilated eye exam. Getting a comprehensive dilated eye exam is the only way to know if your eyes are healthy and you are seeing your best. Talk to your eye care professional about how often you should have one. Live a healthy lifestyle. Eating healthy foods, maintaining a healthy weight, managing chronic

conditions, and not smoking can lower your risk of eye disease. Know your family history. Talk to your family members about their eye health history. It’s important to know if anyone has been diagnosed with an eye disease, since many are hereditary. Use protective eyewear. Prevent eye injuries when doing chores around the house, playing sports, or working on the job. Wear safety glasses, goggles, safety shields, or eye guards that are made of polycarbonate. Wear sunglasses. Wearing sunglasses outside protects your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet rays.
