April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.
This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! If you would like to be a part of their mission and volunteer with this organization, you can! The following volunteer positions are available: Boat Crew Members and Boat Maintenance and Repair Members. Donations are needed for Fuel, Insurance, Clean-Up Supplies and Boat Maintenance. Please call them at (516) 378-4770 or visit www.OperationSplash.org for additional information and updated boating schedules.
Their award-winning S.P.A.S.H. education program teaches thousands of students each year about the importance of our South Shore Bays and the challenges that they face. Students of all ages enjoy the classroom program, the bay tour by boat, the trip down the Nautical Mile and seeing the saltwater
Another Organization You Can Get Involved With: Bikers Against Child Abuse www.bacaworld.org
Bikers Against Child Abuse is a 501(c)(3) organization that exists with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children. They are a body of bikers that empower children to not feel afraid of the world in which they live. B.A.C.A. takes a firm stand against all forms of child abuse to include, but not limited to, physical, sexual, emotional and child porn. This organization has documented the following behaviors in the children they support: improved self confidence, better communication, decreased negative behaviors, increased feeling of safety and more. If you would like to receive more information about all they do and or how you can receive help, please call Big D at (631) 664-8800. Additionally, you can call their Help Line at (631) 408-8218. If you would like your organization to be featured in this column, e-mail Noelle@SouthBaysNeighbor.com!
RECIPES
Artichoke Pie By Deanna N. of Islip
Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely
chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! Send recipes to AllisonK@ SouthBaysNeighbor.com for a chance to have your recipe featured in an upcoming issue!

By: Cheryl Williams Where is home?
Face down in the dirt Breathless The place I’m from buried deep in the ground The ashes of burnt memory Choke me I suffocate, swallowed up by the hallow space, without escape Tell me it’s okay a while to stay For I have lost my way
Buried in the earth beneath Bare feet, chasing shadows that lure me into the broken pieces of history I am lost, the past evades me Sanity escapes me Please let me go I don’t live here no more Running to and fro, needing hope Help me find the way home Show me the path to a new destination A mind enlightened by a higher power

As part of the American Heart Association’s Kids Heart Challenge, students at Nokomis Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District have been learning heart-healthy habits and implementing them
through exercise. Before school, students recently attended a oneday program where they engaged in heart-healthy exercises and games that elevated students’ heart rates and taught them about the importance of
exercise. As part of the initiative, during gym classes students will continue to learn more about the importance of exercise and how to take care of their heart.
Stop-Motion Movies During an innovative art activity at Waverly Avenue Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District, fourth-grade students were recently introduced to stop-motion animation with the help of art teacher Susan Kinsey and technology integration specialist Keri Haas.
Students began the activity by storyboarding the scene that they were going to record and then presenting their ideas to their classmates for feedback. Utilizing the Google Slides program on laptop computers, student groups worked together to carefully move each piece
within the scene while taking photos periodically to create the animation. Over three art classes, students used problemsolving skills to develop new techniques that created smoother animations to achieve their desired results.

Above all, I strive to be a role model who shares at least a bit of my love of learning with my students, who themselves teach me something new every day.” Dr. Gustafson has been teaching social studies in OBMS for the past 12 years, along with a seasoned total of 21 years within the district.

Appreciation For Literacy Sixth-grade students from Ronkonkoma Middle School recently crafted letters to authors explaining how their work inspired them and what they learned about life as a result of reading the authors’ books in coordination with the 2018-19 Letters about Literature National Writing Contest.
The students’ letter writing was supported by lessons about audience, reading and theme. Due to their heartfelt and thankful letters, author Maribeth Boelts, the author of “Those Shoes,” emailed Mr. Black and wrote individual, personal responses to students. Additionally, Marla Frazee, the author of “Roller Coaster,” sent
handwritten letters to the students as well, thanking them for taking the time to appreciate her work. The students were incredibly excited to receive these letters, and look forward to continuing to write throughout the remainder of the school year.

Living Well By: Allison Kugel
with Allison Kugel
allisonk@southbaysneighbor.com www.allisonkugel.com
Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where
we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.
How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.
Blood Pressure Screening Tuesday, April 16 from 10:0011:00am Come to the Connetquot Public Library for a Blood Pressure Screening. A registered nurse from the Visiting Nurse Service will be available to take your blood pressure. No appointment is necessary. The library is located at 760 Ocean Avenue, Bohemia.

Six student-artists throughout the Connetquot Central School District recently displayed their incredible artwork in the Colors of Long Island art exhibit held at the Long Island Museum in Stony Brook on the weekend of March 1. This year’s annual student art exhibit included hundreds of works of art by 263 student-artists from 127 schools across Long Island.
In order to be considered the exhibition, teachers were asked to submit up to two pieces from their students, including both individual works and/or group projects. The district congratulates students Riley Brennan and John Whelan (Idle Hour Elementary School); Jaden McKay and Natalya Esposito-Biondi (John Pearl Elementary School); and Lauren Bizzaro
and Melissa Tribley (Connetquot High School). District art teachers Krystal Zaglool and Sheilah Higgins are both incredibly proud of their students’ hard work and efforts toward being accepted to take part in this year’s exhibition. The collection of work is open for public viewing in the Long Island Museum’s Visitors Center through April 7.
