Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

There’s something to be said about having a plush, warm cushion on the floors of a home. Carpeting can help buffer sounds and minimize injuries from falls. Many homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a kitchen, giving the

room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial and error.

Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer. Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule. Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory. This makes it easier to reassemble and ensures

the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry. Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means the previous finish did

Add Color To Kitchen Cabinets not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of

the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

Notably, 14 of the 20 – the most of any community college in New York State – are recipients of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence and six of the students are Phi Theta Kappa AllNew York Academic team recipients. “Our students, recognized for their outstanding academic achievements, leadership and service, exemplify the very best our college has to offer,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences. My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me. As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one! With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

When Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco began offering “Youth Enlightenment” personal jail tours in 2010 for parents and their at-risk youth, he didn’t realize the impact it would have on the teenage participants. “We wanted to show young people the realities of jail: the loud sounds of cells clanking shut, the lack of privacy, the noises, and we wanted these youth to come away with a strong feeling that jail was not a place they wanted to be,” stated DeMarco. He added, “But what we learned over time by giving these tours is that the parents of these defiant kids really need support. The Correction Officers who run these tours have become a resource for parents who don’t know where else to turn for help.” The personal jail tours are available to Suffolk County residents and their

children over the age of 13. When someone requests a personal jail tour for their teen through the Sheriff’s website, it will initiate a call from a Correction Officer who will often talk with the parent about the problems they are having with their child, and an appointment is made to visit the Riverhead Correctional Facility, in a group setting or individually. Once they arrive at the jail, the youth and their parents will learn about the day-to-day life inside the correctional facility. After the introduction, the Correction Officer will show them the crowded holding cells and walk through different housing areas. The tour ends in the jail’s chapel area where inmates will talk frankly with the youth about how their own poor decisions led to incarceration. “A lot of the kids and their parents are very emotional

At a recent meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Legislator Robert Trotta recognized the heroic efforts displayed by Smithtown resident Ed Hope, who while driving in Ronkonkoma, witnessed a burning building and stopped and rushed to the structure banging on doors to alert occupants of

the blaze. In so doing, he helped a distraught father locate his two-year old son who was asleep in a back bedroom. Two adults and three children were inside at the time of the fire and no one was injured. Mr. Hope has been a volunteer fireman for almost 20 years and is a

former Captain with the Uniondale Volunteer Fire Department. Legislator Trotta said, “Ed is truly a Good Samaritan” who put the safety of others before his own when he saw a building on fire and pulled over to warn the occupants.”

The purpose of this contest is to encourage unpublished writers to write for the stage by providing the opportunity for them to collaborate with actors, directors and others through all stages of production, including rehearsals and performances. The contest will be judged by our Artistic Director, Patrick Grossman, and the winner will be chosen and posted by June 30th. The Workshop: The winner will work in conjunction with our resident Artistic Director to cast, direct and produce the selected work for our September Children’s Theatre slot. There will

be three performances, on weekends, of the work. At the close of the CM Theatrical Run, the author is free to take the material elsewhere for production and in no way are rights the property of CMPAC. The rehearsal process will consist of two to three rehearsals weekly, leading up to the technical week, or week prior to the production opening, and will be the responsibility of the director/ contest winner, along with the Artistic Director, to schedule and maintain. A production staff and budget will be provided to the show and the director/ winner may have input on production staff and casting. An opening day reception for the winner, the cast and staff, as well as selected guests of the winner will be provided by CM. Brookhaven Clean-Up Supervisor Ed Romaine and Councilman Tim Mazzei, Town Board Liaison to the Department of Waste Management, have announced that the 7th Annual Great Brookhaven Clean Up will be held on Saturday, May 17th, at various locations throughout Brookhaven Town. The event, which is co-sponsored by the Town of Brookhaven’s Department of Waste Management and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., drew over 2,400 residents last year. It is part of a national effort that in 2012 drew over 2.3 million volunteers in more than 15,000 communities across America who came together to pick up litter, renew parks, and clean

miles of roadway, rivers, lakes, and seashore. “The Great Brookhaven Clean Up is a great opportunity for people to make a difference in their community,” said Supervisor Romaine, “I urge everyone who cares about our community and the environment to join in and help make Brookhaven a cleaner, greener and more beautiful place to live.” Councilman Tim Mazzei said, “Keeping Brookhaven clean is everyone’s responsibility and there’s no better way to do your part than by joining the Great Brookhaven CleanUp. Thanks to the work of our Department of Waste Management and all the residents who will

FIRST Robotics Honored

At the March 25th Town Board meeting, Councilman Kevin LaValle and the Town Board honored the Sachem Aftershock FIRST Robotics Team 263. The team is comprised of students and alumni from both the East and

North campuses of Sachem High School. Each year, the Robotics Team builds a new 120-pound robot to compete in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) robotics competitions against other teams.

Competitions take place regionally on Long Island, New York City, Connecticut and nationally in Atlanta and St. Louis. Students work together and with teachers and engineers from several companies across the area to build the robot from scratch.
