ith the 2015 St. Joseph’s Church Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball season coming to an end, the annual All-Star game was held on Friday, March 27th. Held at the Ronkonkoma Middle School in Ronkonkoma, 20 youngsters were selected for the two age-group AllStar teams. Two sets of youngsters selected to play in these All-Star games representing the 3rd-4th grades and 5th-6th grades.

Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

The popular “All Kids Fair” returns to the Melville Marriott for the fifth straight year on Sunday, April 26th, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. This event, which won first place in the Event Category of the 2014 Long Island Web Awards, is a combination of education and activities expo and health and wellness fair. It offers entertainment choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Alzheimer’s Education On March 26th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) hosted its 11th Annual Education Conference and Expo 2015 “Caring with a New Perspective” to provide attendees with important information about Alzheimer’s disease from discussion panels, breakout sessions, and a keynote discussion that featured restaurateur B. Smith and her husband, radio host Dan Gasby and moderated by Christine Geed, Communications Director, Office of New York State Senator Phil Boyle.

The annual Education Conference & Expo opened up with an introduction by Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director/CEO, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc., and a caregiver discussion panel moderated by Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, Instructor, ADRC. Throughout the day, more than 400 guests received research updates from Dr. Scott Noggle, Director of the New York Stem Cell Foundation Laboratory and the NYSCF-Charles Evans Senior Research Fellow for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Eileen Kane-Gemmell, MPA, RDN, CDN, Registered Dietitian/ Nutritionist, Visiting Nurse Service & Hospice of Suffolk, talked about the nutritional challenges faced by those with Alzheimer’s disease or those who are cognitively impaired. Robin Marks, Long Island Regional Director, Amber Court Assisted Living, discussed the benefits of the Medicaidfunded assisted living program. Richard Mollot, Executive Director, Long Term Care Community Coalition, explained the laws and regulations

that support residentcentered care and how one can care for someone with dementia without drugs. Members of ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee presented a special session titled “Planning for Long-Term Care through the Various Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease - Saving the family Home.” During the keynote discussion, Ms. Smith and Mr. Gasby shared with the audience the challenges they faced when Ms. Smith was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. They talked about the first time he

noticed she had the disease, how it affected their marriage and how they are attempting to get elected officials to provide more federal funding for research, as well as funding for programs and services to help support the many local families who are coping with a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because of the high incidence rate of Alzheimer’s disease in the African-American population, Mr. Gasby stressed the need for more participation in clinical trials. After the keynote,

guests enjoyed more breakout sessions, an ice cream social, and a plenary session featuring motivational speaker Jim Ryan. Pinning Ceremony Set Honoring nurses who served in the military, the gathering of oral histories and displays of retrospective memorabilia are all part of Suffolk County Community College’s School of Nursing’s plans for a celebration culminating with the school’s 50th pinning ceremony on May 15th. Stony Brook University is the first higher education institution committed to providing cancer researchers as mentors to high school students under a program run by “Stand Up To Cancer” (SU2C) and PBS LearningMedia. Called the EMPEROR Science Award Program, the education initiative encourages students from economically disadvantaged high schools to pursue careers in science, with a particular emphasis on cancer research through a year of mentorship with a scientist from a leading research institution or industry. Known as an institution that provides undergraduate students with opportunities to conduct research, Stony Brook University is also a national leader in providing research mentoring programs and opportunities for qualified high school students in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics)

disciplines. As part of the EMPEROR Science Award Program, researchers from the Stony Brook University Cancer Center will mentor qualifying students. According to SU2C, applications will be available in August 2015 for the program on PBS LearningMedia’s website and on the SU2C website. Students may apply for awards or may be nominated by teachers. The first 100 Awardees, high school students from Title I, or similarly “economically disadvantaged” schools, who will receive one-onone science mentoring over the course of a year or an intensive summer schedule, as well as $1,500 grants, will be announced in late 2015. Students will be connected with science mentors from a host of high-profile medical research centers, from among more than 100 SU2C-affiliated institutions as well as universities and industry leaders in cancer diagnosis

and treatment. The education initiative was announced on March 24th in connection with “Ken Burns Presents Cancer: The EMPEROR of All Maladies,” a film by Barak Goodman which will air on PBS as a three-part series on Monday, March 30, Tuesday, March 31st and Wednesday, April 1st. “The need to increase cancer research to discover cures for many forms of cancer remains a top priority nationally, and this program will provide a pipeline to mentor a new generation of budding cancer researchers,” said Yusuf Hannun, MD, Director of the Stony Brook University Cancer Center, Vice Dean for Cancer Medicine, and the Joel Kenny Professor of Medicine. “We are thrilled to be the first Cancer Center to support this educational initiative and believe our research faculty will be ideal mentors for the selected students.”

Arts Alive LI Students, Pre-K through Grade 12, are encouraged to celebrate ARTS MONTH ON LONG ISLAND by participating in the Arts Alive LI 2015 Poster Contest. The contest, which runs from March 20th to May 22nd, 2015, represents a unique opportunity for students to become involved with the premier regional celebration of the arts on Long Island, win prizes and see their winning entries in an art exhibit at Long Island Children’s Museum in Garden City, NY. The

Grand Prize $300 Gift Certificate. $50 Gift Certificates will also be awarded to First Prize winners in each of three (3) categories including: Pre-K-Grade 5, Grades 6-8, and Grades 9-12. A Second and Third Runner up will be selected and awarded with a Certificate of Participation. Winning posters will become part of the 2015 Arts Alive LI Commemorative Poster Series and will be on exhibit at the Long Island Children’s Museum in October. “It is our hope

that many of our region’s talented student artists will view this as an opportunity to participate in Arts Month and be featured in their first museum exhibition,” said Theresa Statz-Smith, Executive Director, Long Island Arts Alliance. “Since the submissions will be done digitally on our website, ArtsAliveLI. org, it is best suited to those who draw, paint, and specialize in graphic art or photography.” In 2014, Long Island Children’s Museum reported 15,200 visitors and they are happy

SCOPE Awards Dinner Leading Long Island’s public schools to greatness – that was the theme of SCOPE’s 14th Annual School District Awards Dinner, held at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 23rd. The annual event was part of SCOPE’s celebration of 50 years serving children and their families. More than 140 employees from dozens

of school districts across Long Island were honored for their extraordinary contributions and dedication during the 2014-2015 school year. Awards were presented in five categories: School Board Service, Community Service, Teacher Service, Support Staff Service and Administrator Service. Honorees in these five

On October 2nd, 2014, Suffolk County launched the bullying awareness website, which can be found at www. suffolkstopbullying.org. Legislator Sarah Anker invites Suffolk County students ages 13-18 to participate in a music video contest, in an effort to help address the concerns of bullying. “According to 2010 Bullying Statistics, 160,000 children miss school each day for fear of being bullied,” said Legislator Anker, County Chairwoman of Education and Information Technology Committee. “Having been a victim of bullying myself, I understand how important it is to speak up.” By working with Suffolk County Executive Steve

Bellone, Suffolk County’s Information Technology Department, Department of Health, Youth Bureau and the Suffolk County Police Department, Legislator Anker initiated the creation of a bullying awareness website. The website includes comprehensive bullying awareness resources and information for students, parents, and faculty. As of 2012, New York State requires all public school districts to designate a school staff member as a Dignity Act Coordinator (DAC) to protect students from harassment, discrimination and bullying. This website includes a list of each school district’s DAC, which is provided as a resource for students who may encounter bullying.
